Easiest Camcorder Ever!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the easiet camcorder ever for the technically challenged. I recieved my camera and was able to play video on my television within 15minutes after opening the box. The software that comes with the camera is very easy to use. I had a mishap with my camera and it stopped working. The customer service techs were very helpfull and accommedating. I now have a working camera and doing the happy dance.

I like the video camera, but we cannot transfer videos to computer. I have spoken to the Flip Company at least 10 times (Customer Service has been great though, but I may need a different camera)

Great ultra portable video for 6 months! Then ……
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I got this for my mother as a Christmas gift. It worked great for about 6 months. Then it wouldn’t work all of sudden. Never dropped or mishandled. Worked with tech support and couldn’t revive it. Only came on with the little flip beep and then turned back off. I sent it to the company to be repaired. Got it back a about 40 days later. It worked and they fixed it even though it was beyond the warranty! We were so happy. Then on the next outing. Dead. Wouldn’t work again. Since the warranty is only 90 days, there is nothing to do, except complain here and get another brand.

Silly Sister @ 3:49 pm

Love it.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you are a camera buff, or in any way techno-savvy when it comes to camcorders, read no further. I can share nothing with you about the software, the compression features, the resolution…..but I think all that is available in the product description.

If you are, like me, sometimes a little technologically challenged: it takes you longer than anyone else in the family to learn all the features of the new DVD remote, and you still haven’t used all the bells and whistles on your cellphone, and you have to call your daughter when your modem goes out – then this is the camera for you.

It comes with everything you need right out of the box. Batteries, case, usb cord, adapter, and a book of instructions truly for dummies. Very, very user friendly, streams directly to your TV with no downloading, beautiful picture, easy arrangement of buttons, nice size to it, clear screen for viewing….what else could you want? Oh, and it fits in my pocket alongside my cellphone – the one I don’t know how to use all that well! So, within my limited area of expertise, I give it my highest recommendation!

Good for the little Scorseses in your family!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After years of little fingerprints on my digital camera and the photo setting always being on “video” while I was trying to take a picture, I was excited to get the Flip Camcorder for my kids. Its single purpose makes it very easy to use and keeps the kids busy for hours. They were happy just shooting silly videos and watching them on the Flip or on TV (when hooked up with the included cable). When they saw how easy it was to plug into the USB slot and actually EDIT their videos, things got really fun. The quality is not going to blow anyone away, but with hours and hours of video on my old (big, costly, etc) camcorder sitting unused, it’s better to just get it online and enjoyed even if it’s not cinema quality!

I would say if your digital camera has a video mode, this doesn’t add much to your capabilities. But if you have interested kids, or just want something easy to bring along to recitals, sports etc. this is a pretty easy way to go.

Flip: Convenience at a price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was amazed at how rapidly this was delivered during the Christmas season – it came from [...] in about 2 days with regular shipping. I was debating between the new Kodak “flip” and this HD Flip. The Kodak was not stocked anywhere so I bought this as a gift for my teenage daughter. I got the version in white which she loves. Operation is very easy, interconnection with her laptop was simple, video quality is great, and audio is acceptable (this is not the device to expect quality recordings of live string quartets or other similar music – the microphone is fine for voice, but not for high fidelity music – there is no external microphone jack either). The camera comes with PC software to help file and categorize videos. The HD videos from this camera would not play on our standard PC software (Windows Media Player) – I suspect a codec is missing somewhere. However, the videos played fine in the Flip software running on the laptop. The device is very portable. Obviously this lacks the true optical zoom found on higher-end camcorders but some zooming in the device is possible. Bottom line- my daughter was pleased with the Flip, she has used it several time, it has not become her most cherished possession however.

Best Little Recorder
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this for my daughter after purchasing a couple of other brand recorders both of which had quality issues. The FLIP is a great little recorder. Picture screen quality is the best, ease of use is terrific, and adaptability to computer is very simple. The fact that the camera is so compact is a plus! Great product. Highly recommend.

Easiest Video Camera to use!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have to say that this was a great find! I love it! The best part about this camera is the ability to share it with anyone immediately. I am not a “computer person:, but I could do this! Just plug it into your USB port and it takes you right through it. I have found that some people I e-mail video to have a hard time opening it. I don’t know if it is the user or the computer?!?! It is small enough to fit into a purse or bag that you carry every day. I never leave home without it. It is great for everyday use. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t recommend using it to video sporting events. It doesn’t zoom far enough to get all of the action! BUT…for that moment when your kid is putting peas up his nose…it’s perfect. If you get the pink camera, don’t use the bag that it comes in. It seems to leave a black residue on the camera. If I were going to buy it again, I would choose a darker color (although I do love the pink)!

I just couldn’t resist when this item was available for less than one hundred dollars right before the holidays. The quality is very good, much better than I thought it would be. I have used this item many times already – sending many video clips to friends and others. After reading reviews, I am glad I bought rechargeable batteries. This item is so easy to use and very convenient.

Excellent customer service from Flip
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We purchased the Flip Ultra for a Christmas present based on our positive experience with a Flip Mino. Other than the size of each camera, the function, quality and recordings are identical. Unless you want to pay more for the Mino’s smaller form factor, the Ultra is an incredible value. I contacted Flip customer service for help with a user issue and was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from a US or Canadian-based support representative. Great support for great digital cameras.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Flip Video Ultra Camcorder is small, light, easy to carry, easy to use, and produces amazingly crisp videos. Downloading to computer is incredibly simple – just let the little usb thingy pop out and attach it to your computer’s USB port. Hooking it up directly to your TV is just as easy, and you won’t believe how great the videos look!

Had to upgrade the software right away, but afterwards it worked seamlessly. Great product for the price, and easy enough for this grandma to use!

Handy Portable Camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The video camera I have has been used a total of three times as it takes up too much space and I would rather not have to carry yet another bag! I also seem to let the recording sit on the camera because I am either too busy (or too lazy) to figure out how to convert it to a cd or to the tv. The Flip however has really been amazing! It is so small and I can just drop it in my purse and carry it everywhere with me. To watch what you have recorded you simply either watch it on the little screen or you can just flip out the usb and plug it directly into your computer and wallah!! So handy and easy to use (my 4 year old niece figured out how to use it after I explained it to her only twice)! It is also nice that you don’t have to deal with charging the battery either since it takes AA batteries. Video camera I have had for 4 years (used three times), Flip I have had for two weeks and have used it already seven times)!!!

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
So many things are out of stock: the zhu zhu’s, the digital frame and now this flip won’t be in until december 2nd. If you want to find out the second they get back in stock, here’s a tip for you. There’s an Amazon product-availability-tracker that not too many people know about, and you can access it at WhenInStock-com. Just enter the amazon stock id (ASIN) of the product you want to track, and an alarm will sound as soon it comes back in stock. Happy holidays, and hope this tip helps some of you.

Wonderful Camcorder !
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Purchased this for my daughter for Christmas. She is 7 and always used her older sisters camera to make videos. It is simple to use, even for a 2nd grader, and her middle school sister loves to use it too. Video and quality is fine for what they are using it for. Purchase the rechargable battery so it is easy to charge and always ready to go. They have made several movies using Windows Movie Maker and they a lot of fun with it. I would recommend.

Flip Video to the rescue!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I first saw the Flip video on a TV show that featured Tony Danza as the guest. He was being interviewed and in the process plugged his very own Video Blog and pulled out his Flip to shoot himself and the interviewer. After surfing his site and seeing how clear and easy looking it was to use, I bought one for myself for Christmas, 2009. I received it as promised before the date and have been using it now for about 2 weeks.!!!! I love it. It goes easily with me EVERYWHERE and it truly is a remarkable little machine.

Everything it says it does.. is true. The interface to upload, edit and save your videos is simple and basic… but does the job effortlessly. Personally, since I’m using it to video blog myself, I didn’t go for the HD model…. as the quality may be a bit better, but the files would be too large to upload on a regular basis.

I love my Flip and recommend it to ANYONE looking for a cheap, good quality, idiot-proof vid cam. Buy it! You can’t go wrong!

LOVE IT!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
SO I bought this adorable little Flip Ultra and I figured it would be fun to document life’s everyday moments. But what I didn’t expect is how easy it is to use! It is so small that I can throw it in my purse and forget that its there until I realize I want it and then it is so easy two presses of a button and you are filming!! It’s great. I also like that it comes in a few different colors which adds a little fun to it. My only two complaints is that you can’t record in darker places, and I wish that the software that comes with it allowed for a little more creativity on the users part!! But over all I love my Flip Ultra!!!

Great little camcorder for all those great little moments
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Flip as a family gift after seeing them at a professional meeting (I am a teacher.) My husband had been saying for years that we needed a video camera. This one is perfect for us. We aren’t film makers by any means and are really more of a photograph family. This little guy is great, though. We were able to record the first snow of the season and quickly email it to our family in Florida. It is also pretty good for the school plays and sporting events. Considering how compact the camera is, the video quality is pretty good. For the value, you really can’t beat it! I also love the software that allows you to add music to your video. My only wish is that I had purchased a rechargeable battery when I purchased the camera. That is a must!

Bought this for my 8yo. She loves it…makes mini movies of her and her brother playing “pirates” Great for kids, just point and shoot. So far we have no complaints, batteries have held up well. Although now that I say that…a chargable battery would be nice, but AA’s aren’t hard to come by. Overall, we have really enjoyed this product.

Good Camcorder for the family to use without worry.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I like Flip Video camcorders. I got the first generation version, and I used that one a lot. It was very easy to use. It was very easy to take anywhere without worrying about losing or breaking. Then my kids wanted to use it so I thought I would upgrade to the 2nd generation version for myself. But, the 2nd one I got was no good. It could take videos, and review videos within the unit itself, but the transfer of the videos to a PC hung up all the time. I thought the first one was a good deal, but then it made up for itself when I bought the second one and it did not work for me. Finally, after many months of thinking I bought a pile of junk, Pure Video put a firmware upgrade on its web site. I downloaded the update, and now the thing works better than my first Flip camcorder. It takes decent video even in birthday candle light. And, the microphone picks up sound in a room as large as a good size karate studio.

We gave one of these to our ten year old granddaughter for her birthday. We were impressed right away with how easy it was for her to use and with the clarity of the picture and sound. When she took it back home and downloaded her video, though she had some oversight from Mom, they reported that the software was user friendly. She just came back from a trip to Europe, where she used it a lot and really loved it. I did buy the cable, on advice from other buyers, and I think that was wise.

A great digital video camera for “snapshot videos”
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
There are two kinds of people buying digital video cameras these days: (1) People looking to make the digital equivalent of home videos – long form records of family events, (2) People looking to make “digital snapshots” – short-form recordings of events where you are looking to capture key moments from the event for posting to Flickr or YouTube.

The Flip Ultra Camcorder is definitely for the second type of person. While it is capable of recording up to 2 hours of video, this device excels a taking short videos on the spur of the moment. The camera is tiny and easily pocketable. It can be carried along easily in a purse or a pocket for when the moment strikes. It starts up quickly and its ease of use is unparalleled. When ready to shot, hit the big red button. When you’re done, click the big red button again. There is a small digital zoom which can be useful. And the device has built-in speakers and a small screen to review the videos that you captured. And when you’re ready to get it onto your Mac or PC for editing or upload, you simply flip up a built-in USB connector, plug it in, and it shows up on your desktop like a thumb drive.

The best upgrade to this device over past Flip devices is it records to MP4 files, which are fully Mac compatible and easily uploaded to YouTube or Flickr. No special software needed.

If you’re a snapshot video kind of person, this is the device for you. If you’re more of a serious videographer or a long-form video, then check out something more sophisticated.

Flip’n Flip
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The product is cool but it has a couple of design flaws in my opinion. 1) My computer is a new HP desktop that has a door on the front to access the extra usb ports. When you flip out the usb plug on the side of the “Flip” you can not plug it in due to the door. If the usp flipped at the top instead of the side it would work. I have to use a wire which kind of defeats the whole flip thing. I guess it is great if you just use a laptop (notice all their advertisements are with a laptiop). 2) The way the lens puches out makes it easy to crack without any major effort. We are now on our second Flip after one day of usage.

This little camcorder is awesome! Open it up, slip in the batteries and start recording. It is as easy as that. And it is just as easy to transfer your videos to your computer. Plug it into the computer usb port and it uploads automatically. If you want an easy to use camcorder this is it. My only complaint is the lack of zoom capability but since I wanted this just to have fun with, I can live with this one shortcoming. Buy one! Have fun!

I got this for my wife for Christmas to replace our 7-year-old mini-DV camcorder. The other still works fine, but we never get it out because it’s so inconvenient to keep track of which tape has been recorded on and whether it has been cued to the right position and so on.

The Flip is so easy. We literally opened the box, put in the included batteries, found the on button, and started recording without even touching the manual. The screen is bright, clear, and easy to see. The videos come off the Flip very easily using software that’s already on the Flip (so no worries about downloading drivers or losing CDs–just install the software the first time you plug it in and you’re good to go) and look great! I’ve already uploaded one of the videos to facebook so our family in other states can see our 9-month-old daughter.

And I’m pretty sure our manual is still in plastic wrap in the box.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this little camcorder. Five minutes after opening the box I was making videos and saving them to my PC. It’s small size and ease of operation are the reasons I purchased it and on those points it can not be beat. The built in software is all most people will need to save and share their videos. The video and sound quality are excellent. The lack of an optical zoom (limited digital zoom only)is it’s only shortcoming but I can live with that. It even works well in low level interior lighting with only a small amount of grainines. The school where I work purchased several of these for children as young as 8 and 9 years to use to make reports and videos to go along with their lessons. I have also purchsed one for my 75 year old father-in-law and he really enjoyed making holiday videos with his great-grand children. It is just so easy and simple to use and with it’s handy size there is no excuse for not having it with you all the time to capture what amounts to video snapshots.

Great Portable Video Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned a few video cameras over the years but none of them have gotten much use mainly due to the size of the camera. In my opinion it’s not always practical to haul those things around. When they do get used, the video that I take tends to sit on those little tapes never to be seen again. It’s just too much of a hassle to move the content from tape to digital so I can edit and finally watch what I’ve recorded.

Enter the Flip – with a size that fits easily in the hand (about the size of an iPod but narrower and a bit thicker) this device is also easily stuffed in a bag so you have it everywhere you go. For me this accessibility makes it much more practical compared to a traditional video camera.

Another big selling point for me is the simplicity. It’s easy enough to use that I think even my parents could operate it with little instruction. It starts up in a flash and is instantly ready to record (from off to record in about 5 sec). The big red button records and stops recording. That’s all you really need to know. Of course there are zoom and playback options that take the Flip beyond simple recording.

Although the Flip works well in low light, it’s best that you film in daylight or a well lit room. I did a test shot at night in a dimly lit room and the video was watchable but a bit grainy. Filming outside during the day resulted in crisp, clear video. If you’re looking to do a lot of recording in low light the HD version might be a better choice for you.

I also like the fact that I can watch my recordings right on the device itself. The built in screen is good enough for a few people to gather around for a quick view of what was just recorded. It has built in audio as well. If you want to show off your video to a larger crowd you can use the audio/video out on the side of your Fip to plug directly into a TV with a composite input (HD version has and HDMI output).

Getting the video from your Flip to your computer couldn’t be easier. You basically flip out the little USB arm and plug your camera directly into your computer. When plugged in the flip will show up as a hard drive so if for some reason you don’t want to install the software you can just drag and drop video files just as you might do from a thumb drive or other external drive. The software, however, gives you a nice interface for managing your videos on your Flip as well as those that you’ve moved to your computer. In addition to simplified file management the software gives your an easy way to edit videos, take snapshots and make your own movies by joining together multiple files.

I’m very excited to use my Flip for an upcoming vacation. The small size will fit easily into my day bag and with 2 hours of recording time I should have plenty of room to store a day’s worth of video. I also like the fact that the Flip takes AA batteries (regular or rechargeable) so if I run out of juice while I’m out I should be able to find replacements easily. Finally since it’s so easy to transfer the video to my computer I might actually end up watching these videos for a change.

Simple and Brilliant
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you’ve done any camcorder shopping at all, it doesn’t take long to realize that we’ve got a problem with function/feature overload. You could pick camcorder A with night vision, steady hand, and sepia filming capabilities…or you could pick camcorder B with the touch screen, HD video quality, and 50 other functions that you’d never use… The list, as you no doubt have discovered, goes on and on.

This is why I LOVE my Flip. Within 2 minutes of opening the box, it was on and ready to start recording. Within those same two minutes, I’d read the instructions on how to record, playback, and download the videos onto my computer. In my opinion, this is brilliant technology – it’s small, convenient, and incredibly simple. Still want high-quality videos, not to worry, this puppy can capture ‘em.

If you’re an aspiring filmmaker with a commitment to the best of the best of the best…the Flip’s probably not the best choice for you. But if you’re like the vast majority of people who just want a quality camcorder (and be honest, even though they sound cool, you won’t use a quarter of those features on the $400+ camcorders) that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, buy the Flip. It’s incredible.

This quality is good and it is very portable, just stick it you pocket and go about your business. Great Little Video Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great little camera for the price. It is small and light, so it fits right in my purse. It is extremely easy to use – the software downloads itself! When you are ready to use it, it turns on in an instant and is ready to record. You don’t need to search around the thing to make sure the settings are right. Downloading videos is easy. The flip program organizes them for you and you can e-mail them, send an e-card, burn them to a dvd or send the videos to your own webpage (created by flip!) very easily. It also comes with the batteries!

I’ve used it outdoors and indoors and both settings have recorded just fine. Watch out for low-light situations because it doesn’t have a light and your video will be very dark, leading to a disappointing result. This camera is great for taping my kids, and I’ve been delighted to have it on hand for those moments when you say, “Gee, where’s my camera?” My in-laws who live across the country have been very excited to receive the little clips I send them all the time. They say that it’s like they are right there and they are getting to know our 4-month old through these clips. Get one! You won’t be sorry.

Rating:3 out of 5 stars
easy to use, convenient usb connection (that apparently has it’s own problems. see other reviews), decent battery life and decent amount of space. i think decent price point as well. software needs a bit of improvement imo. not super easy to use.

then after about 6 months it just died. no drops, no damage, it just died. and i mean died. no display, no recording light, nada. strangely it does still power on with the usb connected. but unless you plan on taking your computer around as a huge dongle this is not helpful.

and they only have a 90 day warranty! so unless they replace this out of warranty i’m looking at a disposable camera.

but i hear there is some other stuff out there. next camera will not a be a flip unless they repair this one.

my camera is an ultra. not sure of the generation. perhaps 2nd. oh and this one does not seem to have a reset btn as some other models have. so much for that hope.

1/19/2010

after emailing 2 different contacts on the flip site, then some unhelpful auto responses, they finally issued me a return number and gave me an address to send it to. no guarantees they said. the process was kind of annoying since i had to fill out the same info on the camera like 3 times.

but, they sent it back pretty quick. it works and my old video was saved. so happy ending. add back one star!

The screen is clearn and the buttons are simple to find and use (even if you don’t read the owner’s manual right away.) It is tiny and perfect to carry in your backpack, purse or glovebox. Since it is so tiny and fits easily in my purse I have had mine on hand to catch several moments that happened quite by suprise and I would have missed otherwise.

Nice, except for the battery situation
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The new Flip Ultra has some nice features that improve on earlier Flip models. The most noticeable of these is the larger viewing screen. The 2-inch screen makes a big difference when shooting or viewing videos. Obviously, the 120 minutes of recording capability is huge, too. And the matte finish is much easier to handle than the shiny plastic finish that’s been on the earlier Flip cameras. The one thing that drives me nuts about this camera, though, is the battery situation. While I really love the flexibility of the second generation Ultra–being able to use AA batteries if you need to–I don’t like the fact that the rechargeable battery pack is an optional accessory. The perfect scenario for me would be if the second generation Ultra came WITH the rechargeable battery pack, but also accepted AA batteries. But alas, that wouldn’t be as profitable for Flip. You can’t really go wrong with the second generation Ultra. But it sure would be nice if it came with both battery options in the box.

Can you use video from the Flip Ultra 2nd Gen Camcorder with a Macbook?
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1PRN6V3QRADX9 This video review will be of more interest to Mac users. I made this video because I haven’t seen video reviews about the Flip as used by Mac users. My primary purpose with this video is to let Mac users know that video from the Flip can easily work with the Mac and iMovie without problems. The Macbook does have a built-in iSight camera for making videos, but the Flip camcorder is much more portable for when you don’t want to tote your computer around. Be sure to watch the other video reviews from other people to get more of an idea as to the quality of the video for more typical video making instead of what I’m showing here looking at a screen to prove that the video files can easily be used on a Mac with the iMovie video editing software. Thanks for watching.

UPDATE JAN. 3, 2010:

I’ve since upgraded to the Flip UltraHD Camcorder and gave my Flip Ultra 2nd Generation Camcorder to my sister.

Whether it’s the Flip UltraHD or the Flip Ultra 2nd, here are also some extras that I got for my Flip and that are available here on Amazon:

short 6-Inch USB Extension Cable (great if you have a laptop, notebook, netbook, macbook)

longer 3-Foot (1-Meter) USB Extension Cable (may or may not work depending on PC’s USB)

Flexible Mini-Tripod (but you can always sit the Flip on any flat surface)

full standing 57″ Tripod (always great to have a real tripod)

Clear Silicone Skin Case for Flip UltraHD Camcorder (you may like -OR- not like)

I also got a Neck Strap (similar to Neck Strap with Swivel Buckle) that I picked up at a 99-cent store.

So easy a cave man could use it :) One-Push EVERYTHING. Reliable. Excellent Video Quality (can be fully observed when watching this on your computer). Works perfect under both Windows and Linux. No software required. You don’t even need to really install the pre-loaded software if you’re using Windows. Pop it in. The new drive detects. Open the drive. Goto the folder where the videos are stored. Copy / Paste. Edit in your favorite editor. Upload to YouTube, Burn to DVD or whatever else you feel like doing — using the tools and sites you are already used to using.

One warning though: Use the Cameras delete function. DO NOT DELETE USING WINDOWS EXPLORER OR THE LINUX FILE BROWSER!!!!!! :) Copy and paste. Do not use the “cut” option. Do not use the “delete” option. Delete using the cam itself :)

I had done a bit of research before purchasing this one. I wouldn’t say the video quality is “great” but what can you expect for $130. If I was going to buy another one, I would shell out the extra money to get the HD. All in all, this has been a great little video camera. It is extremely easy to use and to download the videos. The software is included with the camera and automatically loads when it is connected to your computer. I also really like the email capability. You basically just click on the email button, type in email addresses and drag the videos you want to include in to the window. The recipient receives a link to click on and watch. Very cool. The only thing that concerns me is how secure it is. I am not sure I want some freak clicking and watching my children in their school video.

Cheap lightweight camera that can go pretty much anywhere
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you’re looking for something simple, this will fit the bill. If you need great quality footage, get a proper HD camera with the appropriate lighting and mic additions.

However, for the average joe, this is a great camera to bring on trips. It is only slightly larger than a regular digital camera and takes excellent footage. It records sound pretty well at a normal distance (though you should obviously test this and speak up). We had one our trip to Asia; and even in areas where we did not speak the language well, it was pretty easy to show people who spoke no English how to use this camera. The buttons are VERY sensitive, though and for people with big thumbs, can take a bit of getting use to.

If you are going on a longer trip, you will want to bring a lap top with you to download the pictures. They come off as avi files, so you’ll want to make sure that you can read them on whatever program you are using to play back. Most systems should be able to read these files. Also, it recharges via usb port. Hence, if you are recording for multiple days and do not have a lap top, that could be a problem.

I am more than sure that anyone who receives this gift will be recording video footage far more often.

The nice younger brother to the MinoHD
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It seems like most of the reviews here have done a great job of presenting the cons and the pros. Everything that Heath L. Buckmaster said is absolutely true. Instead of being redundant, I’ll simply summarize my thoughts.

The Flip Ultra Camcorder is a nice little device. While you won’t get as great of picture quality as the MinoHD, which is also a bit pricier, you will get a nice, compact every day camcorder that fits nicely in your pocket. It has a slightly larger screen than the MinoHD cameras I’ve seen, which is nice, and I do like the button press to turn it on (compared to the earlier non-HD model that had a spring-switch. With the extra space, you get about two hours of filming at a 640×480 resolution. What was surprising was that, while it does take batteries, it does come with nice Duracell batteries and not some crappy off-brand. Aurally, it has a good sound that was able to pick up karaoke singing, when the surrounding tables were also talking and laughing loudly. This camera works the best outdoors during the day or in lit rooms. That said, the video quality in a gloomy bar wasn’t too bad, surprisingly.

For those thinking about getting one of the earlier, cheaper models (the first one I bought was a 30 minute one for around $50 here) and this one, definitely go with this camcorder. It holds more data, is more attractive and I found it easier to grip and less bulky. However, for those that are torn between this and one of its HD siblings, the HD one isn’t much more expensive and has better picture quality. The only question is what the new iPods, with a camera in them, will look like compared to the Flip. Apple seems to be gunning for this market share and, if the camera quality is similar, you might want to look at the iPods since they are much slimmer and feature-filled.

i really should have given this a four star but won’t because i just like this little camcorder so much. it is very easy to use and it is so much fun to have it on a trip. the sound quality is only so so and the color is not exactly realistic. depending on the lighting the focus can be sort of inaccurate too. one nice thing is that it will capture motion pretty well. in normal light the color is actually more vibrant than real life. it is hard not to like this camcorder because it is so simple and feels good in your hand. i can transfer the videos to my computer just by plugging it in to the back in the usb. i am not a genious and this one is fine for me

I just got this device and installed the software on my computer, then installed new software and firmware update. Thought that was strange seeing this is supposed to be the newest FLIP Ultra 2nd Generation unit. That tells me they haven’t perfected this thing yet and it’s still in Beta. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on my PC. There may be a fix or solution out there but I’ve not found it yet. Why should I have to? If, and when, they fix this problem I will edit and give praise.

Well my Kodak Z740 Camera takes better video then this unit, so does my Casio Exilim EX-Z80 Camera. Needless to say I am disappointed in this device. There should be NO problem connecting to your computer and creating quality videos for sharing IF this unit worked as advertised. But it don’t. Plain and simple. Buyer beware is all I got to say.

I really like this camera so far — very easy to set up and use…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve always been more of a “still photographer” and not a great one at that. Videos always sort of intimidated me.

Yet, when I was a kid, my dad used to tape record our family conversations during Christmas celebrations and those recordings became priceless. I figured that this was an easy way to replicate that plus have video.

The camera is smaller than my cell phone — and frankly a lot easier to use than my cell phone. It is a piece of cake to set up and only took minutes from opening the box to trying it out. Nice touch including 2 duracell batteries rather than el-cheapo varieties or none at all.

It is a very minimalist camera so it is pretty easy to get going… push the up arrow to zoom in and the down arrow to zoom out. Easy to replay what you have just shot and delete what you don’t like.

I had no problems getting the software to work on my XP system and viewing/transferring the videos to my computer.

My only complaint is that the sound, overall is a bit dim so part of what I wanted this camera for — to capture spontaneous conversation — is not optimal.

However, video quality is decent — especially for what I am using it for. Not like I’m going to be filming hockey games any time soon. On my husbands’ urging, I have ordered up the HD version which is just a bit more money and we’ll see if that makes a difference — I’ll update this review accordingly.

So far, I’m happy with the camera. The camera is truly idiot proof — I’m the idiot that has proven that! I only wish I had had something this simple and easy years ago when our boys were younger. Ah well, better late than never — knowing my kids, they’ll keep us supplied with endless material for years to come ;-)

Not what I’d hoped for & DVD ordering being discontinued
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
My main reason for buying this Flip was so I could film and put on DVD family holidays and special occasions, and make DVD copies for everyone.

I have an older Dell computer with Sonic DVD software, but it still met the specifications Flip required. But I could never get it to make a DVD. I also tried with a neighbor’s newer computer using Nero software, but that wouldn’t work either.

After I couldn’t do this using the files I had downloaded to my computer, I went ahead and ordered the $19.99 DVD from flip, thinking I would be able to copy it myself. Couldn’t do that either. I also tried different brands of blank DVDs (Maxell and Imation).

My only option was to order 5 more DVDs from Flip at $19.99 each – that was unacceptable so I returned the camera.

I must say that it was very easy to use, the picture and sound quality were good, and if it weren’t for the inability to make those darn DVDs I would have been a very happy camper and kept the camera.

UPDATE 1/30/10. FLIP VIDEO HAS POSTED THIS REGARDING THEIR DVD SERVICE:

Flip Video will be discontinuing this service on March 19, 2010. You will still be able to easily export video files to your own computer to burn your own DVDs. If you have any questions, please contact customer support.

I read everything I could about the Flip video before I purchased it.

After it arrived I took it outside and recorded my neighbor, his wife, their son, the dog and the cats. I then uploaded it onto my laptop and the results were wonderful.

I then rigged the camcorder inside my car, using the gadget for my GPS to secure it. I then drove into town recording the trip for about 30 minutes with the radio playing in the background. When I came home I couldn’t wait to see what I had captured. To my utter disappointment, all that I recorded for 30 Minutes was tree tops and power lines, hee, hee…turns out I had the camera pointing too high. Oh, well live and learn.

Next I took my Flip on a 32-hour train ride through Canada, all the way to Halifax, Nova Scotia. I must have several hours worth of video that now needs to be stitched together.

I love my Flip camcorder, it’s so easy to use and above all sooo handy, fits in your purse….always ready!

The other great thing about this cam is that it is quick to respond, from off to recording is about 10-15 seconds. The one negative I did not like about this camera is, no still picture taking abilities, but it makes up for it when you edit the videos you can take a snap shot. This is the best invention! I love this camcorder! It’s so easy and portable. It can be tossed into a purse or pocket. Takes great videos. The Ultra screen is big enough to actually see the videos pretty well. Up to 120 minutes of video time, so may not be for long projects. Great for family videos. I say grab this camcorder!

Great little toy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Flip Ultra is a great little toy. It is so simple & easy to use, light weight etc. The videos are good quality, easy to send in an e-mail (don’t have to upload to youtube etc but certainly can), the e-mail capability alone in the Flip is worth the money. The ability to pick out a frame from the video and take a snapshot of it is awesome. The software is so easy to use, it is a pleasant surprise. I could not enjoy a toy anymore than I am enjoying my Flip Ultra. I highly recommend it!

bang for your buck, and excellent customer service
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had a Flip Ultra for about 2 years and I have loved it from the first moment I turned it on. I don’t have a fortune to spend on a big camcorder to record my kids, but this baby gets the job done. It’s so nice to just plug it in to my computer, upload my videos, sort them, send them to grandparents, and even post them on facebook. My other favorite feature is the ability to pay $20 for an archived DVD made by Flip and sent to you.

On top of the great product, Flip customer service is wonderful. I’m definitely not technologically savvy, and was having issues due to the software not being updated. I called and a cs representative walked me through all of the steps and fixed the issue that had stumped both my husband and myself.

If you’re wondering if it’s worth it, it is!

Short Lifespan
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I loved my Flip – it was easy to use, always there – until it died at about 18 months of age. Without warning, the camera quit responding. When turned on, it would boot as far as the FlipVideo screen and stop right there. From this point on, it would not turn off, nor would it turn completely on. Flip customer support was very prompt and responsive, but in the end, they said they couldn’t do anything because the warranty only covered the first 90 days.

So, if you don’t mind having an almost disposable camera, in that it won’t last you a very long time, then this is the camera for you. I really expected more customer support from them.

flip is easy, great for travel, but missing a few key features
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just returned from europe where I used this camera with ease and was able to capture beautiful ‘portraits’ of people in personal interviews since the camera has no fuss and is small, the interviews were spontaneous and un-self conscious.

I wish the zoom was stronger, but not bad considering the size of the camera.

The sound is also very limited and often couldnt hear the voice of the person speaking. When I made a movie using the flip program, the music(even on the soft setting) over-powers the sound on the camera. There is no way to play sound inbetween the voices/sounds from the camera.

I love the feature of the flip program “take a photo” and was able to get some fantastic photos.

The video editing is very limited. Maybe they are coming out with a more advanced program, but was only able to cut the beginning or end of each video, nothing in the middle.

So, all in all for the size and convenience, it’s a great little video camera for recording events/travel.

But, for anything artistic, not good. Think of it as a polaroid camera in the video world. So, I suppose if you are creative, you could make something interesting using the limited technology.

This is a great little camera for posting on YouTube and other like sites. It takes a great video for what it is and the uploads are quick and easy. I should have spent the extra money and gotten the HD version, but I didn’t know at the time that it was needed. I will probably upgrade later.

Remember that this camera only does video, not still pictures, and you cannot edit with it. It is for on the go video to post on the internet quickly. At the price, it might be something great for an older child who has an interest in videography, but you don’t want to invest too much until you know it is going to stick. The station I work for uses them with older elementary school students through high school with great success and excitement.

SO MUCH FUN.

Great “Camcorder”, one little flaw
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is our second Flip and we highly recommend them to everyone, with one caveat. They are quick and easy to use/learn and produce good results for a point and shoot video camera. The video is 640×480 and the audio is so-so. It’s not a full fledged video camera so this wasn’t a surprise. The 2Gig will give you approximately two hours of video with sound. The camera has a built in USB arm that connects to any standard USB port and the camera is light enough I haven’t have any issue with attaching it to a USB port with minimal support for the camera body or USB connector while transferring files.

The only downside to this camera is that how ever they encode the video (used to be AVI now it’s MP4) the CODEX to watch the video isn’t standard. If you plug the Flip into the computer and let it install the Flip driver you can watch it on that computer without issue. When I send videos of my son to my grandmother I have to convert them because we can’t find a way to get the CODEX onto her computer which is a major annoyance. I was hoping when they changed file formats this would have been fixed but it wasn’t…

We waited 9 months after our 1st was born to finally get a video camera. We checked over a number of reviews and got 2 personal recommendations for the flipvideo. We had seen a video put together on an IMAC with flipvideo footage and we were really impressed. So, we bought one recently and we are really happy with it. It is about the easiest piece of technology to use … on/off button, red button for record, play button to see what you recorded, forward and backward, zoom and trash button. SO EASY! The ultra gives you 120 minutes which is plenty of time. Its size (bigger than the mini) helps with holding it steady… you really can hold it steady if you focus and practice. Great buy. You can load your clips onto your computer and save them, email them, etc.

Idiot proof
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have access to a Flip as part of my job. I’ve tried using it for a week and here’s what I’ve taken away from the experience. Its about easier to use than a digital still camera. Push the power button, then hit the red button when you’re ready to record. The menues are minimal- it only sets the date and time and whether or not the record light goes on and whether the camera will beep. I can easily hand this off to anyone (under 30 years old) and they’d be taking video with ease. This is especially nice if you want to let the kids have a try.

Uploading video is a breeze, I don’t even bother with the included software, just connect the device and navigate to the “DCIM” folder on it and pull the movies off from there. Simple. I don’t like the “flip out” USB connection since its a rigid piece that will not easily “sit” next to your computer… you may end up bending it in at an odd angle which can not only damage the Flip’s USB, but your computer’s USB port as well. Why this is considered a signature of the device is rather troubling since its the poorest design element of the whole thing. Nevermind if you have vertical USB ports (or ports on the back of your iMac!). In short, get a USB extension cable (not included in the package).

My main complaints come from the technical side. While it may be “idiot” proof, there’s no room to grow with technical know-how. No way to tweak the image quality in-camera. And the lens is what really kills me. Its a fixed focus lens, which means that from about arms length out it does ok, but any closeup work and the picture looks very cheap. I have a digital camera that captures better quality images, and looks better when you zoom in (the zoom on the Flip is pretty weak).

The flip is little more than a toy camera. It takes OK video, has a good amount of on-board storage (which you cannot expand or swap out) and takes good SD quality video in decent light. The sound is ok, but since its mounted right there in the camera you don’t have any option about what it hears. If you need a bare bones camera that just about anyone with three fingers can use, this is it. If you have any real desire to capture quality sound and video and you have a realistic budget you should look elsewhere.

I bought this camera because I needed to tape myself teaching a lesson, and this camera was perfect for it. I bought the mini tripod for it, and set it on the desk and just pressed record and I had my video. It was easy to upload to the computer, and it even allowed me to create a movie, meaning I could add credits and music to my video. Also, it works really well in darker room settings. I practiced filming in my living room, and the lighting in the video came out lighter. Great video camera!!!!

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is very similar to the HD product I reviewed. It’s very easy to use. It’s quick to use from the off position. It charges quickly in the computer via the USB port. There are not a lot of features. Point. Shoot. Zoom. You can shoot forever. (Do you realize how long two hours is with a consumer device? You can bore your friends. ;-) )

It REALLY needs picture stabilization. It needs a lot of light.

The software isn’t bad. It has some good basic features. You can add music and do some minor editing. Most people will never need more.

The size is very handy. It is really a pocket device…smaller than some phones. VERY light.

This isn’t the device to record the kids growing up but it’s a great device to take the first time they take a step when you are at a friend’s cookout.

A very sweet little camcorder
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Here’s a very handy little camcorder you can carry in your shirt pocket. It’s about the size of king size package of cigarettes and takes surprisingly good video. The Ultra gives you two hours of recording time and is perfect for on the spot videos of breaking news wherever you see it happen. If this little gizmo catches on, police departments throughout the land better be careful of their nightstick activity. Of course it’s also great for watching your kids or grandkids grow up and I’m sure it’s already one of the primary creators of You Tube videos. Of course it doesn’t have the versatility of a full featured camcorder. The zoom range is limited and a bit awkward to operate. It doesn’t take still pics at all, but it looks more like a regular camera than a camcorder, so you can make a video and people will think you’re just taking a picture. Hmm, lots of mischief possibilities there.Flip Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black)

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camcorder is the answer! Ideal for online upload, stress free, easy spontaneous videos at your fingertips. Today we went to a store with pets for adoption. My son easily made a video of those cute kittens who needs a new home.

I choose the battery option of Ultra instead of Mino because I know internal battery can wear out. Compared to a Mino, this one feels tougher to hold, who needs a gadget that requires extra TLC?. Ideal for a laptop USB output only. If you have an desktop computer where the USB is up on pedestal of a standard hard drive – DONT BUY THIS CAMCORDER, the flip usb plug cannot hang in the air with no support (unless you use your hands)…and those upload time can vary , hopefully you wont have to hold a 2 hour long video upload …if you know what I mean…

I bought 3 camcorders in 3 days, the first two ones I bought were Insignia and Ipod Nano, both were returned the next day. There is a camcorder for every need, budget and use…I cant complain for a 10 year old…he stopped asking questions on how to use this camera …

The Flip Ultra is small, inexpensive and simple to use.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I think of the Flip Ultra as the pocketknife of camcorders. What it lacks in ability it makes up for in portability and low cost.

The Flip easily installed on my Windows XP computer. I just plugged the camcorder into my USB port and followed the on-screen prompts. The Flip software was copied onto my computer and an icon was placed on my desktop. The software has basic editing functions and a still capture function.

For those that prefer to transfer files manually, the Flip appears as a drive in Windows Explorer allowing you to drag and drop the MP4 video files from the camcorder to your hard drive.

It’s easy to take video with the Flip. There are very few buttons to learn and everything is pretty intuitive. The standard-definition video quality is good but the Flip lacks the ability to smooth out even minor hand shakiness so you must hold the camera very still.

Sound quality is good but the digital zoom function is disappointing. Using it causes subjects to appear slightly out of focus.

The Flip exceeds my expectations for a camcorder at this price point. The addition of image stability would be a great improvement but if your hands are steadier than mine, you may not need it.

I was excited to buy this camera. Sure, it’s idiot proof, but that’s not the reason why I bought it. I was willing to pay more for the image quality.

This is my biggest dissapointment.

This camera is only good for day light. At artificial light it shoots horribly. Red looks like pink, some other colors are washed out. Horrible. Forget zooming in, picture will turn grainy. I would perhaps accept this, if I would not have Logitech video camera for Skype on my computer that has much better picture quality than this. It costed 90 dollars which is much cheaper than this junk.

It’s easy to plug in this camera to laptop, but I expected software to compact video so you can quickly send it to somebody. If you shoot longer video than 1 minute, it takes a long time to send and other person to download. That’s really stupid. I expected more.

I bought rapid charger with this camera. What does rapid mean? It takes 3 hours to charge this RAPIDLY. Don’t call it rapid, call it molasses charger!

If you are not in a hurry to buy camera, wait for next generation. Maybe it will be better.

A co-worker demonstrated this camera one day and I immediately bought one on Amazon (best price). It sells itself, as I’ve had other friends buy one when they saw mine. The picture is clear with good color, it’s easy to hold steady, and it captures good sound when it is close to the subject. When you connect it to your computer’s USB port, it automatically lets you upload a little editing program – allowing you to save the video, email it, upload it, and even cut and edit pieces together. And it slides into a soft bag and fits easily into my purse. a wonder for the price.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I needed a cheap little camera that took good video of my grandkids since my children are so remiss in doing so. I thought this little camera would be good since I saw some great reviews on it and the folks were right. It is light weight, easy to carry and pull out quickly, shoots high quality video. The kids are not usually aware of you filming which gives great shots. All good so far until I used up the 2 hours of video, and I was out of town. I did not have my computer with me, so I was trapped with video that I could not download and no way to save what I had.

My son suggested I go to Staples, or Best Buy and get a flashdrive and have them download it to the flashdrive. I did that and it worked fine. Now I just carry the flash drive with me and it gives me another 2 hours of film time. You will need an 8GB flash drive for the camera since that is what is inside the camera and it will hold 2 hours of filming. Editing is cumbersome and not very well thought out in the software, but you can buy other software to edit that works better.

If you are planning on taking this camera camping, be aware that you need to be near a high tech source when the film runs out. Although 2 hours seems like a long time, it isn’t.

This is like the iPod for the camcorder crowd. With each update these little wonders just keep getting better. The usb swivel arm on this model feels more substantial. The wider screen is sharper, provides a higher level of detail. The zoom is still just OK. Battery life is much improved. The case has a non-slip sort of covering that feels better in your hand.

The best thing about the Flips is that they are so easy to use. No installation CD is needed. All the programs you need are included inside the storage. Just plug it into your usb and have fun. Uploading clips to Youtube has never been easier.

I carry this around in my purse as it is with no case. The LCD hasn’t scratched up, but I am not going to push it. Get a case – even if it’s just a silicon skin with a screen protector. Keep the lens clean. Keep all your original packaging and documentation. When it’s time to upgrade sell your prior model here on Amazon. The cash you get back goes a long way towards keeping your gear up to date.

I bought this as a gift for my 13 yr old niece. Before giving it to her I wanted to make sure that I understood how it works in case she should have a question. From the moment I opened the package I could start shooting in about 5 minutes. The set up was very easy. Recording, playing back and even watching the video recorded on TV is a snap. Basic editing (the only thing I have tried so far) is a breeze as well.

The best part is sharing – there is a link sent out rather than the file itself, so no matter how big or small the video file .. everyone can get it right in their mailbox.

The only con is the level / kind of zoom function. Its limited and does tend to change the colour tones – especially under indoor limited lighting.

Excellent Videos with Voice Clarity
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My wife needed this for work, to tape her sessions with clients (required for her profession). Until now she had relied on an old but still good VHS-C camera. The videos of the Flip Ultra (non HD) have better image clarity and audio, which is very important for reviewing the sessions. Editing on her PC is also very easy.

On our wish list for future Flip software upgrades, is the possibility of a higher fast-forwarding speed, when keeping the fast-forward button pressed. If you have a long one-hour interview, and for some reason you need to just view the end, it takes about 6 minutes to reach that point: a 10/1 (10 seconds in one second) fast-forward speed. It would be nice if after a few seconds of fast-forwarding the speed increased automatically to 120/1 (2 minutes in one second).

My wife and I are ballroom dancers and needed a video camera that was portable yet had good quality in all lighting. I used the camera to film several dance showcases. Several other people brought their video camera of various sizes and qualities. Although the lighting was low, the videos from the Flip were the preferred videos for the event. Why? It was so easy to use, captured movement with no blurring, sending videos through email and facebook was quick with no set up. Extracting still photos from the video was painless and produced excellent stills quality. I’ve used the Flip since to record dance lessons, groups and events other than dancing. Its a go-anywhere do anything camera. Highly recommend it. The only problem is that, like me, you may stop bringing your larger costly video cameras with you, and they become dust collectors.

There’s only one setting for the flip: Easy with great results.

You can’t afford to pass up the Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Gen- I am glad I didn’t and here’s why!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just by chance I happened to come across the Flip Ultra 2nd Generation last week when the price was at $89. It lists at $149. Even for a bit higher this little gem is so worth it and thanks to Laura I’s video review- in which she actually uses it and shows the quality of the imaging and ease of use with this unit- I was sold in the few mins that it took to watch her vid.

Mine arrived this past week and I have been experimenting with it and believe me- it is so easy to use- I can’t get over that even someone like myself who hates to mess with a bunch of buttons, but at the same time, loves to preserve those once in a lifetime moments, could be more happier with a purchase! This is the most economical and best investment for just that.

For myself- I don’t feel the need at this time to worry about having the HD option on the higher end items. I mainly use these vids to upload to emails, blogs and what not- I suppose down the road if I the need for HD, I would consider upgrading to HD, but I have viewed a video I shot with this unit on our HD televsion and honestly- I’m content with the quality of the video

.

The main things for me, is that I was able to open the package when it arrived, put the AA batteries in, and after reading the rest of the instructions, which are short and right to the point note card- shot some short clips- slid open the side USB stick- connected it to my computer- and at the same time- the FLIPVDIEO software package was being uploaded onto my computer-how nice- no extra disc to worry about, it’s all in the FLIP, then uploaded and emailed the video shorts I had just created within the first hour of receiving this.

How great is that? I give this 5 stars all the way and have now ordered the tripod that goes along with it- another great investment that I know will come in handy.

So for a minimal investment, during these tight economic times- I say this far exceeds my expectations and am so looking forward to the holidays and being able to capture roughly 120 mins of video-more than I’ll ever need at any one occasion.

The only concern is to make sure to keep enough extra AA batteries (2 needed) on hand- I have used it quite a bit so far and am still on the same batteries that came with the unit!

Take a look @ Laura I’s video – you will be sold- and apparently quite a few people are- as while I am writing this- it is out of stock- again. I just wish I would have taken the leap and ordered 2, as I was thinking- this makes a perfect gift as well! I am still considering ordering another one for a gift as I know they would just love this one as much as I do.

My advice-if what you are looking for is similar to what I had in mind- when this comes back in stock- jump on it- It’s a purchase that I’m sure you won’t regret! JUST POINT AND SHOT- How easy is that?

For a non-camera-type person, meaning someone bored with the whole idea of taking pictures, this gadget is excellent. You just hold it up and press a button, and that’s it — it films what you’re aiming at. You can stand it up on a table, press the button, and film yourself doing your exercises, or in more intimate activities. And then get to see what you really look like. So it’s educational. The only thing that worries me is the little arm that plugs it into the computer. It fits in so tightly that it takes quite a tug to get it out, and that little arm doesn’t seem very strong. I suspect the life of this camcorder depends on the life of that arm. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the hell out of it!

Not so many years ago camcorders were big enough to hold VHS tapes and required a shoulder mount to steady it while you shot pictures of your kids on rides at Disney World. Hot exhausted fathers were still the rule of the day when the 8mm camcorders took over the market. These were much lighter but seemed like they weighed a ton by the end of the day at Wallyworld.

Now we have pocket corders which slip into shirt or pants pockets and come out when needed and go back the rest of the time. The Flip Ultra is an excellent example of this type. The camcorder is preloaded with a 4GB chip which records about two hours-the same as the old VHS tape. It is powered by two alkaline AA batteries which make it easy to recharge almost anywhere.

The Flip Ultra downloads with built in software directly to your PC or Mac through a USB port and will even upload directly to Youtube, myspace or other websites like Flickr. It has a connector for watching on televisions and the video quality on my 46 in LCD was excellent.

This is not a serious camera for filmmakers. Its zoom is limited and it is fixed focus. It is not an HD recorder either. But for family fun, it is a real winner.

This camera is brilliant. I am a teacher in lower primary and wanted something that was easy and quick to use. For my first project I had children record their thought processes after solving a maths problem. This was very easy for them to do. I then loaded into my computer and showed back to them in a space of about 1 minute. The average age of my studens is 7/8 and they recorded, downloaded and reviewed by themselves with ease. I then introduced to other teachers and they have also enjoyed using this camera and they particularly enjoyed the simplicity and use.

This latest version is a huge improvement over the old Ultra which I have enjoyed using for the past 2 years. The size is the same, but the ergonomics have improved along with the increased lcd screen and storage capacity of 120 minutes. This is a MUST HAVE for all parents who want something ultra small and durable to capture those special moments. I highly recommend the upgrade to HD.

I gave it as a gift. The receiver has contacted Amazon re: an exchange or just reimbursement and they’ll purchase another.

They aren’t having the cooperation I always respected with Amazon.

Great Camera for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I hardly ever leave comments on something I buy from Amazon. But this product I cannot pass up. This is a great camcorder for the price. If you want something very basic and simple to use, this is the camcorder for you. It exceeds my expectations. The picture & sound are crisp & clear. Even uploading to youtube. I’ve read reviews that uploading to youtube, the picture and sound were degraded. This is NOT the case for me. Also, the software program is very easy to use, and makes it very easy to make movies. You can add sound, mix clips together etc. It will even upload to youtube for you. I’ve tried it both ways, from the FlipShare program, and from YouTube, and have had no problems whatsoever. Plus the software is always with the camera. No need to carry a disk around. BTW the microphone is sensitive enough to pick up my cats purring, even though I didn’t hear them purring when I was recording :)

All in all the camera is compact, fits in a shirt pocket, easy to use, and its a lot nicer than I expected!

Portable, easy to use, nifty little camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve made comparisons between this camera and my Cannon Camcorder and while the Cannon is much more expensive and has more features, this one held its own – especially considering the price. This is an easy camera, I think even those “technologically challenged” can manage it. If you want a bare-bones camera that is decent and you want to take video and share it online, I think this camera would be perfect.

Pros

* Everything is kind of “dumbed down” for people who like simplicity, or just for those who don’t want to mess with complicated features.

* Small size makes it very portable. Flash memory makes it durable against dropping and tumbles.

* Runs on AA batteries which I think is nicer than the expensive rechargeable batteries that come in other video cameras.

* Display is very bright.

* I took video in different lighting – indoors, lowlight, outdoors full sun and it all looked fine.

* The software for your computer is built into the camera. Where ever you are, you can just pop it into the USB drive of your nearest computer and you’re set!

* I hooked it up to our HDTV to see the video quality. It looked pretty nice. There was a small amount of interlacing, however it was tolerable.

* The software that comes with it is pretty user friendly and allows you to make DVDs, send videos via e-mail or post them online, make movies or even a greeting card.

Cons

* Doesn’t shoot stills however the software that comes with it has the ability to make a snapshot out of the video taken.

* I wish it has the feature to shrink your video size. A two-minute video is about 69 MB and that’s a pain to upload to YouTube, especially considering that quality video doesn’t show up through YouTube. I wish it had a way to remove like every tenth frame or reduce the size of the video. There is a feature called “trim” but that’s just cutting your video shorter.

* The zoom is digital, not optical.

* There is no image stability control so the picture can sometimes be jerky depending on how steady your arm is.

In all, I would actually rate this 4 and 1/2 stars but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and rounded up. I think for the price, this is an excellent camera. We have a new baby in the house and I find myself reaching for this camera more often than our expensive one.

Very poor in low light
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The video in low to normal lighting comes out with black artifacts all over. Also, when downloading to the computer, my wireless connection goes out which is annoying and strange. Not sure if I am keeping this or not. Fairly disappointed in it. It is easy to use, and transfer files over to computer though.

Update: Had it for two days now, and on the second day, the computer no longer recognizes it. Complete junk.

Flip Ultra 2nd Generation is a Gadget Queen’s Dream
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m known as the family photographer not because of special training but just because I take pictures / video at almost every family function and though I am an amature, I’m told I’ve taken some really good pics / video. That being said, I wanted something that was portable, easy to use and SMALL to capture not only those family moments but those spontaneous moments with friends and life in general. The Flip Ultra 2nd Generation is that VIDEO camera. Its not fancy but if you’re in it for the fun of it and want good quality video that you can e-mail to friends/family or upload to social websites, then the Flip Video Camera will be your newest friend. No video tapes to buy and no extensive “How to” to read. Just plug and play and you can use it on different computers so you are not tied down to having the software on just one computer as the sofware is in the camera itself. You can’t take pictures with it but I have my digital for that so its no biggie. Simple but good quality is what I wanted and that is what I got. Enjoy!

After reading many reviews, we bought the Flip for our son for his 8th birthday. Within minutes of opening the box, he had the batteries in, the camera on, and was recording his sister dancing. He figured everything out on his own. We have a MAC and it’s completely compatible with imovie/iphoto. According to my son, “It’s really easy to use the camera and it plugs right into the computer. Perfect Gift for Tweens, Teens or the PC Savy user
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera was an impulse purchase for me after viewing video review (#1) for it. I was looking for something I could carry in my purse to all the school functions; band concerts, etc…, and then quickly use to upload to Facebook the video. This item fits the bill perfectly!

I love these things about it:

+Great looking video, even though the resolution is only 640×480 at 30 frames per second. It’s done in H264 video and AAC stereo audio in MP4 file format with this camera. NOTE: This is NOT the HD camera. If you want HD, buy this one: Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (White).

+Audio is great too. Microphones picks up well and replay doesn’t sound distorted at all.

+Works with a MAC or PC!

+Takes AA batteries – easily picked up wherever you go.

+2 hours of recording time is ample for most of my needs.

+Software seems easy to use for uploading to websites, emailing and saving to files.

+Has a zoom feature!

+Lightweight and compact.

Things that could be better:

-USB connection option for desktops; not really supported as the connector flips out and there’s nothing to support the body of the camera. This problem can be fixed via a USB ‘A’ cord (not supplied but mentioned in the directions for use): USB 2.0 Extension Cable Type A Male to Type A Female 6 ft, Black.

-Battery life. Might need to invest in rechargable batteries or the lithium battery pack: Flip Video Battery Pack for 2nd Generation Ultra & UltraHD.

-Plastic cover for batteries feels a bit flimsy and has small plastic tabs that allow it to lock into the body of the camera. I’ll have to be careful when changing batteries!

-Wish it came with a clamshell style hard case instead of a pouch to protect it. That would add to its bulk and weight though, and for some, be a negative.

Uses:

+Uploading video to websites.

+Emailing video.

+Making home movies to burn to DVD.

+Archiving family gatherings to digital video.

This highly portable video camera is a great find. While part of me wishes I’d spent the extra cash on the HD model, right now I am pleased with the price I paid, the features of the camera and the ease of set-up and use.

I highly recommend the Flip Ultra 2nd generation to anyone who is PC savy and likes to upload video. Kids ages 9 to 49 will love it!

**Check out the photos of the Flip I uploaded to Amazon, and the notes on each.

Good performance for low cost camcorder
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Flip Ultra is a inexpensive camcorder that’s very good for specific uses. I’ve tried the camera out in various environments, and I’ve found that it provides an excellent video when the general illumination is consistent (no deep shadows next to bright, sunlit spots), and the subject is between 2 and 15 feet or so away. The sound pickup is also good, but if you plan on talking you’ll want to hold the camcorder away from you so that all sound is picked up equally.

I tried the zoom feature and found that is problematical. The zoom is the reason I dropped the review by one star, and came close to dropping the rating to 3 stars. If you’re in a low light situation and holding the camcorder by hand, the zoomed in video is basically unwatchable–too broken up and blurry. However, it does a better job if the lighting is brighter, more even, and you’re using a stable surface for the camcorder. Regardless, you will lose some detail when using the zoom, so use it sparingly. You’d be better off moving closer to your subject, if possible.

The camera is exceptionally easy to use, and you can be taking your first video five minutes after opening the box. The software provided on the camera is nice, especially if you’re sending the video directly to YouTube to share with friends and family. However, you’ll want software such as iMovie or Quicktime Pro to create more sophisticated videos and podcasts.

Speaking of podcasting, you’re not going to get London Landscape TV (my favorite amateur podcast) quality podcasts out of the Flip Utra, but you’re not spending $3,000 for a camera either. In other words, set your expectations on the price and you won’t be disappointed.

This camera would be very good for self-podcasts, filming birthdays, celebrations, kids playing on the slide, that office get together, even something like a cooking or other podcast or video. You can use it at the zoo, especially when you’re closer to the animals (think petting zoo).

It does a nice job on street scenes and wide open natural areas, but is not good with “cluttered scenes” such as within a forest under bright sunshine. I found it does surprisingly well indoors, with even, natural lighting.

I haven’t tried TV playback yet, but I have uploaded the videos to my AppleTV, and the playback is very good.

The Flip Ultra is small enough to toss into a purse, pocket, or backback and keep with you, for that unexpected event. It’s a superior video to what you get with cellphones. It’s also easy enough to use that even the reluctant technophobe will enjoy using the device.

FLIP and dip
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
TO THE POINT:

1- Came with 2 AA duracells.

2- You turn it on with the push of a recessed button on the right side of the unit. The button is cool because it does’nt stick out at all so you do not have to worry about the FLIP turning on while its in your pocket.

3- The first time you power it on, you set the time and the date and you can choose to have the red “recording” light in the front OFF or ON.

4- Captures 118 minutes of full-VGA-quality video on 4GB of built-in memory. For some people VGA quality is more useful than HG. Reason-being is that HG quality video will not play smoothly on older computers. And VGA videos use less space so it will be faster to download them into emails, youtube, and such.

5- The flip-out USB arm plugs directly into your PC or Mac. There you upload all your videos and empty the FLIP so you can go back out there and take more videos. Oh, and you can also take sills from video with the included software.

6- A very nice 2″ color LCD screen. This is a very sharp anti-glare screen. I was suprised by the clarity of it.

7- There is a connector cable included so you can watch the videos on your TV. But I wont be using that alot as all my videos go into my hard drive after I shoot and review them right on the FLIP itself.

8- Push up or down on control pad for volume recording control. Playback audio is superb as well. Great sound from the built-in speaker. Am not kidding.

9- Video capability is also pretty good in low light levels. It’s 30 frames per second and recorded as MP4 files.

All this in a sturdy non-slip body (don’t know about the texture of the white one).

It is the size of a compact camera but not half as delicate. So you can take it along everywhere you go, cause you never know when you might need it. I carry it daily, ie: wallet, keys, cellphone, FLIP.

Don’t buy this item if you need pristine video quality, filtering effects, powerful zoom, and need to shoot at night…period. DO buy the Flip Ultra if you want to capture lifes wonderful moments with a click, post You Tube clips for family or friends, and want to play amature film maker with the awesome built in editing software.

This is a fun camera. I’m 48, and I feel like a kid using this thing. The video quality is acceptable, as well as the sound. This camera is also good for reviews, in which I use the Flip on for Musical items, like guitars and effects pedals. In addition, I use it as a song writting tool, to video capture my ideas. For $114, and free shipping, you CAN’T go wrong.

I have been reading reviews about the Flip for monthss and saw that most everyone loves it. My sister had borrowed one from a friend and loved it too. So, when I saw a special price on this before Christmas, I took the plunge. The only negative thing I have to comment on….and this might not be a problem, but I haven’t yet found a solution….is that I have not yet found a way to transfer movies I have made with this onto a DVD. I get error mesaages each time I try. The research I have read seems to be conflicting with some saying I have to find some sort of flie converter software to make this work….most of which costs $35-$40 to buy. The movies and videos take up a lot of memory on the computer, so I want to trasfer them to DVD, but run into problems each time I try. So—I might reserve I final judgement on this…there MUST be a solution. I can’t imagine Flip recording videos, being able to download them to ones computer, but now being able to put them onto other straige media. Please let me know if anyone else has a sloution to this.

Just what we were expecting
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I wanted:

-the close focus feature for taking videos of my kids that are usually within arms reach (until the most recently model of the MinoHD, the 2nd Gen Ultra was the Flip with the closest focus).

-an upgrade from the video mode setting on our point-and-shoot digital camera (just about anything would have satisfied this category – but we aren’t huge video people so we didn’t need top of the line by any means)

-to stay within the budget of a gift certificate we had been gifted

Impressed by:

-the battery life – I put in the AAs that came with the camera and figured I’d only have 20 minutes before I had to switch them out, haven’t switched them yet. We bought the battery pack but have yet to crack it open. (purchased end of Nov. 2009)

-ease of use

-shuts itself off relatively quickly, which is nice when it accidentally gets bumped on

-vibrant color and lighting in general purpose situations

Limitations:

-it is very difficult to take a video of a whole room, you always have to pan

-panning or movement in general by the videographer may cause motion sickness when reviewing the video

-gets faked out by bright light when you are trying to take a video of someone near a window

-zoom is basically pointless – doesn’t get you much closer and makes everything that much more jumpy

Overall:

-Just what we were expecting. Easy to use, inexpensive. Fun to play with but not going to get us to Hollywood.

Checkboard Patterns in Dark Area
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
We had the first generation Flip for a year. We really liked its portability and video quality and replaceable batteries. Its power switch failed all of a sudden (almost exactly after a year), so we decided to get another Flip, in this case, the second generation Flip (we really didn’t need HD)…

Initially, we liked its bigger screen, but the video quality seemed slightly worse (especially the color and noise) than the first generation Flip. But we didn’t think it was bad enough to warrant a return.

However, when we loaded the videos taken to a PC to view them, we noticed that there was a fixed checker-board pattern all over the scene, especially visible in a dark area. It was really bad, so we had to return the camera. I don’t know if others have seen this or not.

We are thinking of trying the Flip Ultra HD because we think Flip still makes the best portable video camera (did Cisco’s purchase ruin the company?), but we are concerned.

this camera is very easy to use which will allow us to use it more often. The features are minimal but thats what makes it so great. Very easy to share and transfer videos which again makes it a camera you would rather use than our expensive miniDV one. A couple of feature they might want to add is an anti-shake and a littile bit of optical zoom. A thing that I noticed also is when reviewing your video, you would need to click one by one. It would be very nice if a thumbnail for browsing was available. Other than that shoot away!

Christmas present from my boss – Love It!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received this as a Christmas gift from my boss. What a surprise! It’s really a lot of fun, and it worked literally right out of the box. I was recording in five minutes. It is ridiculously easy to use, and the audio and video quality is very good considering its small size. If you’re just looking to capture “moments” on the fly, this is a great, lightweight, small and super portable video camera that is a breeze to use. Everything is automatic, and in low light, it beefs up the light capture automatically, although the video comes out a little grainier than normal, but it’s not bad. If you’re making movies or looking for High Def, you might want to try the HD version. I don’t have it but I imagine it’s pretty much the same, just higher quality video.

All in all, a gift I wasn’t expecting, but was very pleased to received. Thanks, Grandmaster! You Rock!

We bought 2 of these to use at our wedding reception. We’ve been testing them out in the meantime and they’re fantastic! Small and very light, easy to use and very easy to upload and share the videos. The USB connection is on the flip, so you don’t have to worry about losing connection cables, you can plug into your computer immediately. We love them and would definitely recommend them.

I bought this for my 15yr old daughter to replace her camcorder that was a bit larger and more steps to download her videos. She loves this product and so do her friends. The flip we bought has 2 hours worth of recording. It was much easier to get the video we wanted at Christmas time. I would reccomend this for anyone who likes ease of use and great videos.

This Flip Ultra is so easy and so fun. I gave one to my dad and he was so excited. I also gave one to my husband and at first he had no idea what it was and my kids thought it was so stupid.

Then we started using it and now my kids want one. My husband is not tech savvy at all and he quickly figured it out, its that easy. Great picture, i had read reviews that it wasn’t worth the money for the HD and this is great without. Its the perfect size! Battery last forever too!

This is a fabulous product, one that makes it easy for ANYONE to take great videos Don’t expect to have any problems. Pics are very sharp even on full screen. Can’t think of a single complaint. You’ve got to try one of these. Almost forgot..this also makes a great voice recorder for taking notes.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I made the mistake of buying another similar video camera after the salesman and the box it came in said “Mac Compatable” . After spending one weekend on the phone with APPLE and RCA I learned it is only MAC compatable if you download about 6 patches and five applications and stand on your head while reciting the alphabet backwards. Back to the store for a quick exchange for the FLIP which my salesman said was not as good at the first one (not true). I brought it home and it was plug and play. Its great for a party video, a clip of the kids or dog but I wouldnt use it for the school play. The zoom is limited , but thats the only thing that is limited. The quality is very good and it fits right in my pocket.

I bought this camera about a month ago because of its ease of use. I absolutely love it. It’s extremely easy to use and so compact that it fits in any pocketbook. Downloading the videos was super easy. Just plug it into your computer, the flip software loads, and the videos download. Emailing a video is another simple drag and drop process. I videotaped my 4-yr-old nephew in NY for Christmas and sent it to my brother in London in no time. The only issue I’ve had so far is the poor quality when the videos are played on a large screen. Otherwise, this camera is a hit!

I bought this camera as well as the FLIP MINO HD. I returned the Mino. The Mino’s screen was so tiny, I was practically squinting trying to focus on it. This 2nd generation Flip is great. Has all of the great features as the Mino except that it runs on batteries. Although you can buy a rechargeable battery pack. Yes, it’s not HD and the quality is not as great as the Mino; but I didn’t feel that the quality was worth spending an extra $100 for. It’s slightly bigger than the Mino and takes shorter videos, but these are all things that I didn’t really care about, especially for the extra $100. It’s a fun camera, incredibly easy to use, and easy to upload/email/edit, etc. I bought it for those quick moments when your child does something you want to capture. I highly reccomend!

Burning Flip videos to DVD disc for general viewing….
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Just one short word about this device that I really liked (besides all the other good things that others have said)… When I burned my Flip videos (after editing and finishing using Microsoft Moviemaker) onto a DVD-R disc and played it back on my DVD player, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the video was of a very good quality, certainly comparable to most video taken off a standard video camera. I’m talking about footage taken in good light, of course. I can guess that the HD versions of the Flip are going to be even better. BTW, Flip comes with an editing program, but you’ll discover that Moviemaker is somewhat easier to use and has more features. Also, for burning to disc for viewing on any DVD player, I use a freeware program called DVD Flic, found here [...] It’s somewhat slow, but turns out a very good video that plays well on all brands of players.

In this day & age you’d think there would automatically be an image stabilizer on all camcorders — not the Flip Ultra :( There is also no rewind/fast forward on the camera, and the volume control is loud, louder, loudest.

Otherwise it is small, easy to use, and portable so that is a plus.

Updated basic Flip a winner
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by my daughter, Pamela:

I’ve used an earlier version of the Flip video camera, so I was excited to test out this new Flip. Luckily, it didn’t disappoint. It had all the characteristics of the old Flip that I liked but with a few updates.

Setup: The Flip video came with everything needed to start recording right away. In the box were the camera, a drawstring protective carrying case, a wrist band, two AA Duracell batteries, and even a TV cable to hook the camera up to the TV for viewing on a larger screen. This allows you to start using the camera right away, without having to charge any special batteries or scrounge up AAs from your remote controls. Once batteries are inserted and the power button is pressed, the Flip prompts you to choose the settings for your camera, including date and time. At this menu, you can also turn off the the camera makes upon power up and starting/stopping recording. This is a nice option because you can be a little more discreet when you use your camera and don’t want to distract others with random beeps. If you want to be really surreptitious, you can also turn off the light that appears when the camera is recording.

Recording: There are several key features I like about the Flip video camera. To begin, it only takes a second to ready itself for recording after you hit the power button. This is great for capturing little unexpected moments–especially if it takes you a while to dig the camera out of the bottom of your bag. It also automatically powers off after about a minute of inactivity, which is great for saving battery power. While we’re on the subject of battery power, I am impressed by how much recording time the Flip can get out of a pair of AA batteries (you can also purchase a “Flip Ultra Rechargeable Battery Pack” separately, that I imagine lasts longer than AAs).

The controls on the Flip are quick and easy. The big large red circular button both starts and stops recording, while the (+) and (-) buttons above and below the large red button allow you to zoom in and out, a feature which I do not have on my still cameras with the video option. This is a really nice feature which makes a big difference in your recordings. When the camera is on but not recording, the arrow buttons allow you to choose from previous recordings, which can either be replayed on the camera by hitting the play button or deleted by hitting the trash button and confirming delete. The delete button can also be locked by holding down the button to avoid unintentional deletions (and easily unlocked by holding the button down again).

Another great thing about the flip is that the screen is more or less square, so it greatly reduces the temptation to turn the camera sideways. I have found that when I use the video function on my still camera with a more rectangular screen, I almost always end up turning the camera vertically to better capture my subject, only to realize later my mistake–that this just turns my subject sideways on the actual recording. It may sound silly but it happens more than you might think and the Flip’s square screen cuts down on this problem.

In addition to the ease of use, the Flip also keeps a running count of how much recording time remains on its memory, so you know exactly how many minutes are left. When a video is replayed on the camera, it also lets you know how long that video is.

The microphone’s sound pickup is pretty good–picking up sounds in both indoor and outdoor spaces. I have recorded people in a small room, as well as large bands in open outdoor spaces, and been very happy with the sound quality of both recordings.

One last feature that should be noted is a tripod mount, for use with a tripod or other Flip accessories. I have not used the tripod mount, but it’s nice to have the option.

Uploading:

The Flip is equipped with a pop-out USB arm (held in place by a latch when not in use) which can be inserted directly into the USB port in a computer. The first time the Flip is connected to a computer, you are prompted to setup FlipShare. This software installs automatically and allows you to save videos to your computer, play and delete videos, edit movies, add music, capture stills from videos, email videos, and share videos online (including uploads to MySpace, YouTube, etc). It is also a nice central location to manage previously recorded videos, especially because the software organizes the videos by month and year.

I haven’t used any of the movie-making/editing tools, so I cannot speak to them. Generally, however, I have found the software intuitive and simple to use.

A couple differences between the previous version and this new version:

TWO hours of recording time (twice as much as before)

The power button, instead of being a sliding one, is an embedded push button. This is an easier, less clumsy way to power on.

Any cons? One drawback when comparing the Flip to other video cameras is that the video quality is not HD, like many other cameras on the market. However, for what it is, and the price point, this little camera can’t be beat. Home videos taken on the fly likely don’t need to be taken in high definition–your family might even thank you for the more forgiving medium.

I bought family members first generation Flips some time ago, and they were so impressed by their simplicity and convenience that I had to get one for myself. I justified it by explaining to my wife that it would make Amazon reviews so much easier (I haven’t once used it in that way), but really I saw it as a new toy. Sometimes less is more, and that certainly seems to hold true in the camcorder world — at least as far as the Flip is concerned. While there are certainly bigger, better, and far more professional solutions about, the real value to the Flip is that it can go with you anywhere, and you can forget all about it until a shooting situation comes up. We’ve used ours to record press conferences, and post the same online for others to see. We’ve created our own virtual tours of homes we were interested in. We sent it to Princeton for my grandfather’s 65th reunion, so I could at least enjoy the festivities from a distance. We’ve used it far more often than we ever imagined we really would, and it’s proven to be as much a real tool as a novelty. That you can hand it to someone who has never seen it before, and instruction can be limited to “on/off here, start/stop recording there,” means that it’s near universally accessible, and fun even for those who might otherwise be somewhat technologically averse.

I grabbed the 2d gen Ultra because I wanted the additional storage space. What I didn’t expect was to enjoy a larger view screen, a better (by my eye) on/off toggle (a simple push button, rather than a slide), higher quality audio, and a number of functional enhancements on the software side, such as mass delete with confirm.

Curiously, I no longer seem to be able to just pull the .avi files from the Flip into the Movie Maker software that comes bundled with Windows Vista, but I’m not prepared to actually complain about that fact, as it may be as easy as saving them in another format before pulling them in. If someone else has a meaningful solution here, I’d love to hear it.

That aside, I’d be hard pressed to come up with a single complaint about this generation of the Flip. Unlike hauling around a ‘real’ camera or camcorder, you can toss this one in your pocket and forget all about it until you need or want it. You can teach others to use it in under 30 seconds. Uploading to services like Youtube is easy even for those who have never done it before, with or without the software bundled in the camera itself. I couldn’t be happier that I took the leap from the basic first generation to the Ultra 2nd.

PLEASE DONT BUY THIS FLIP CAMERA!!!!!!!!!

I bought the Flip Ultra before our Disney Vacation the end of December 09. I took it and my heavy duty vhs-c camcorder. I ended up just using the FLIP camera the entire trip bc I didnt want to haul around the big ole camcorder. Flip Ultra was awesome. Easy to use, fit in my fanny pack, I filmed our entire vacation on the flip (which had 120 min of record time). When I got home my troubles began. I loaded the FLIP with the easy usb connection onto my VISTA computer. I downloaded the video to my computer. But to my surprise…I could NOT transfer any of my vaction memories with the MP4 video from my computer to a dvd to keep. The MP4 video format has to be converted into a video format my computer & dvd can read. Then the FLIP software CRASHED my computer! It took an entire day for the VISTA computer to repair itself, and thank God I didnt lose anything on my computer. It took off the FLIP software, then I went into add/remove programs and made sure I uninstalled the FLIP software. So now I go to Office Depot and buy Roxio Software which claims it converts MP4 video to another format. Well I havent been able to figure this out either. So now Im totally STUCK with my precious family DisneyWorld Memories in this FLIP camera with no way to get it onto a dvd. Plus it crashed my computer and I cry every day bc I bought this horrible piece of junk. DO NOT BUY THE FLIP ULTRA or any flip camera. If I can spare ONE person from this misery then I think Ive done a good thing. Spare yourself the grief. And take your big ole vhs-c camcorders to use for your precious family memories. At least that can be converted.

I bought this camera because it was required for the graduate psychology program that I started this fall. Long story short, it is very difficult to get more than one person into a relatively mid-ranged shot. Getting two people into a close shot is impossible unless they are practically sitting in each others lap. Also, if you film in a room where there is a lot of sunlight, the video will come out very dark. The Sound quality is terrible. It has kind of an echo-like sound quality and sounds almost like an old school tape recorder. The playback options on the computer software and the camera are very limited. If you need this camera for school like I did, just borrow one from someone but definitely do not buy it. It costs entirely too much for what it is. If you’re willing to spend a few bucks more you can go to Best Buy and get a much nicer digital video camera.

Does not convert video to WMV as advertised
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I wanted a camera that would convert files to WMV because the files are smaller and compatible with Windows Media Player. The support section of Flip’s website specifically says, in at least two places, that the Flipshare software on the camera will convert the video to WMV. This was the main reason I purchased the camera. When I got the camera I discovered that the software does not convert to WMV. Flip tech support comfirmed to me that the newest version of the software does not perform this function, contrary to what the Q&A section of their website still says as of the time I am writing this review. I will never purchase another Flip product. The information they give about their products simply can’t be trusted.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my second Flip Video camera. The first recorded a shorter amount of time. Liked it enough that this second one was a welcome addition. I’ve never needed to record more than 60 minutes at a time so this 120 is more than enough and nice to have just in case I do ever reach that limit.

The camera records well and clearly. The color and clarity is good. I LOVE that I can carry this in my purse or in the car glove compartment. I bought the little tripod to use and it’s a handy grip too when not using it as aa true tripod. I would hold it above the crowd to capture video and the tripod helped get some more height.

The zoom is okay. Not the best but for the price there’s no other mini camcorder that beats this one from what I’ve seen. I have bigger cameras and they have their place for sure but there’s no comparing the ease of use (direct USB plug-in!), convenient size, with the balance of video quality. Terrific.

Think twice if you have a video recorder on your camera
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
First, this product is not bad, it is just not as wonderful as everyone seems to think it is.

Good) Small and easy to store.

Bad) No protective lense cover means I have to also buy a package to keep it in.

Good) Easy to start and record.

Bad) It only works well in good light. Normal house light at night is not good enough. All the lights in the room must be turned on.

Good) Sound quality is better than I expected.

Bad) The picture quality is not.

Bad) The “picture” feature looks promising, but I was dissappointed. If there is any motion (the people are usually not working to stay still) then it is VERY hard to get a good picture without streaks.

Also, the light in the room is a problem.

Good) If you are taking a “picture” of kids and you get them in a group, you can get a good picture from the film. Others might not get that exact moment that you can get with the video.

I guess I think you should buy this at the store and then return it if you do not like it. Online shopping is great, but trying something and returning it without shipping etc is sometimes nice.

An Outstanding Web Video Tool
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The new Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Generation comes in with a few tweaks over the original Ultra. Most notably the internal memory jumps from 2GB to 4GB which equates to about 2 hours of video. Image quality is much improved via the new installed software package. Audio on this model is more enhanced then previous versions via the upgraded microphone. This model accommodates both Mac and Windows operating systems. The LCD screen is expanded from 1.5″ to 2″. The control buttons are larger. The sliding power button is no more. The tekkies at Flip opted for the industry standard push button. This unit is slightly larger then the original Ultra. The body is plastic and comes in black, pink, white, and yellow with a chrome finish.

Simplicity at its best, above average video is obtained with 640×480 resolution video at 30fps, compressing it using H.264, and encodes it as MPEG 4. As with all Flip gear, shooting and transferring videos to a computer or even uploading them to file sharing sites is simple. The on board 2x digital zoom is a gadget at best and is practically useless. First time mini camcorder buyers should be aware that manual, advanced or still capture settings are not an option. However, the preloaded software package easily allows stills to be pulled direct from video.

For a low resolution model, the Ultra produces above average video as long as one views it via the programmed format on the computer monitor or TV. Enlarging to full screen will not only distort the image, it will also bring on the noise demons. That said, colors were well saturated, sound was good and low light performance was average at best. Buyers should keep in mind that a steady hand is paramount to good video. A tripod will make all the difference in shooting quality video.

Powered up via (2) AA alkaline batteries, this unit opts for a simple video out port that displays low resolution video on TV. The basic composite AV cable (RED/WHITE/YELLOW PLUGS) ships with the device. The folks at Flip throw in batteries, wrist strap and a soft, zip string cover to protect the Ultra’s plastic finish. The cover will not come close to protecting the mini cam from bumps and drops. It goes without saying that a memory card slot or even rechargeable batteries would have made this product an even sweeter investment.

By no means will the Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Generation be confused with any of the top dollar units. However, it is a system that can and will cover the basics for web based video. For those that do not wish to sink the extra bucks into a top of the line mini camcorder, this model will more than cover the bill.

I purchased the Flip Ultra (120 minutes) for my partner for a safari trip to Africa. It proved to be the best $129 I’ve spent on a gift in a long time. Easy to use, the right size for carrying in a pocket, she loved it. The video is crisp and the zoom feature enabled her to get some great shots. The 120 minutes proved a good amount of time for a 3 week trip. With its pre-installed software, it’s easy to download.

A few downsides to the camera– doesn’t have any removable media so you have to download to a computer and the sound isn’t very good.

This is a great camcorder. It is cheap, super easy to use and records great video. The camcorder is small enough to take it with you anywhere. It loads up quickly and you are ready to record anything.

The good thing about this camcorder is that it uses 2 AA batteries. You can easily replace them when you run out of battery, whereas for a Flip MinoHD Camcorder you have to charge the camcorder through the USB. The video quality is not better in the Flip Mino HD, but it is pretty good. The video stabilization is still bad, in this and all Flip camcorders.

The camcorder is a bit big if you have used to a Flip Mino HD. Otherwise, it is fien. It has a rubbery exterior and accessible controls.

This is a great camcorder: cheap and easy to use.

I bought this a while back, and it is what it advertises itself to be. I have no problem with the product. The one caveat that I would mention is this… on my PC I use a wireless USB module. It seems as though the USB connection to the FLIP conflicts with that. It usually requires that I reboot the PC and my wireless router (with the FLIP unplugged) in order to get my wireless internet working again. It’s just a toy, and it’s fun. Just be aware that it may cause some conflicts and be ready to deal with it. Otherwise, the product is rock solid – I’ve dropped it twice and it still works!

This one is just the right size to keep in your purse or coat pocket. Christmas Memories Preserved
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Flip Video Camera to accompany me on my Christmas trip to North Carolina. I have seen several friends use the adorable little camera at just the right times and I wanted to be ready to catch the memories on video too. It was the perfect tool to preserve the memories of sledding and playing in the snow; something novel for this Florida girl. I am so glad that Santa got it to me just in the nick of time!

Excellent Camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this camera and have been using it often in the last 3 weeks at holiday events and dinners. It has excellent video quality and sound. The zoom is not that great, but it isn’t an important feature for me. Filming things far away will be a challenge since the zoom is poor, but zooming in on things fairly close will be easy.

The buttons are very easy to figure out and the ease of use is pretty self explanatory. Uploading video is easy as well.

I highly recommend getting one if zooming is not a big priority for you. We are considering buying another one my husband can take to Iraq with him.

A couple of important missing features…
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
First, I want to say that for ease of use, this camera is definitely the thing. After running through a very simple setup procedure (time/date, record indicator setting, audible beep setting, etc), the camera is ready to go. Unfortunately, there were two problems that I consider major (though for some people these are probably not a concern). My biggest complaint is the lack of any sort of image stabilization. I tried holding the camera as steadily as I could, but almost every video I have is shaky and not very pleasing to watch. My old DV tape camera from seven years ago looks much better since it has built-in image stabilization. If you are the sort of person who likes to use a tripod, then this is not really an issue. My other big complaint is the weak zoom feature. Only 2X? Is that it? That means you have to be pretty close to your source material. I really wanted to love this since I wanted to replace the old DV-tape camera with something smaller and more convenient. The ability to throw the images onto my computer via USB is really nice. But all of the videos I made are just too shaky to watch, so I ended up returning it.

Camera’s great; support sucks
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I admit, I’m technically challenged. I love this camera. Its so easy to use and the pictures are pretty darn clear. The problem starts once the pictures are taken. Yes, I plug it into my computer using the handy little arm. I download the pictures. And that’s where the challenge starts. How do I send my video to others? How do I burn it to a disk? How do I do ANYTHING with the pictures??? HMM. Let me look in the instruction booklet. Oh yeah, there ISNT one!! I’ll go to the website! What they tell you doesnt make sense and if you write to their techs, they don’t make sense either, just quoting what is on the website.

I believed the hype. I read the reviews on Amazon and thought it would be easy to use. I would love to send a video to friends and family, but I just don’t have a clue how to do it. I spent hours on the computer trying to figure it out, either on my own or through the website. Not happening!!!

If you’re not informed about video you might want to think about buying this camera. An instruction booklet would be really really nice!

I agree with the other customer who said this is like the iPod of video cameras. It’s intuitive and it just works! As a working mom of a busy toddler, I don’t have time to read instructions, and can’t remember to tote around a lot of equipment or cords and with the Flip, I don’t have to! I just carry it in my purse and it’s always ready to use. It starts up quickly, is easy to use and easy to upload. I highly recommend for all parents or parents to be!

This is a great video cam! Can’t get over how easy it is to use! It is light weight, easy to use right out of the box and the pic quality is really good. If I had one complaint it would be the zoom – I am used to a tighter zoom but that is easy enough to get around. Great product for the money. Doesn’t Get Much Easier Than This
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had heard the Flip Camera had decent video quality (for the price) and was very easy to use, so I knew I wanted a Flip, just didn’t know which one. I chose this one because it was the newest model that still used AA batteries. I liked the idea of using AA batteries, which I know is a turn-off for many people, for a variety of reasons. First of all, a “specialty” battery tends to lose its ability to hold a charge (hasn’t that happened to one of your cell phones?) as it ages, which means you could lose out on taking some special videos if you’re caught without enough juice to keep going. Other reviews rave about how tiny and slim the newest flip is (because it doesn’t need to be fat enough to house AA batteries). Personally, I think this camera is very compact, while still having enough substance about it so you get the sense you’re actually holding something. Smaller isn’t always better in my opinion…..too easy to drop, lose, and often accompanied by limited functionality. In addition, if you’re on your way to a big event and you realize your battery is dead, you simply stop at the drug store and pick some up. Furthermore, you can also use re-chargeable AA batteries (recommended) while keeping some spare regular AA batteries around in case your re-chargeable ones run out of juice. So even if you forget to re-charge your batteries, you always have the option of regular batteries. With the newest ultra slim model, when you’re battery’s dead, you need to charge…..no other options.

One huge flaw that affects all of your videos
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve been using this camera for a few months and have noticed one major problem. All of the video it takes is somewhat zoomed in. Even if you use the controls to zoom all the way out, the video appears to be zoomed in. In other words, it’s the opposite of a wide angle lens.

This is terrible when shooting in close quarters. I use the camera for taking video of house tours and it makes every room seem so much smaller than video taken with another camera or photos taken with another camera. You get so much less stuff in the shot and have to try to back up all the way into the corner of the room to get even a decent shot of the room.

If you want to see what it’s like, take your digital camera, zoom to 3x, and see what it looks like. Understand that that’s the furthest you can pan out with the Flip.

Good portable camera, the younger brother to the HD Model
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have two Flip camcorders – the MinoHD, and the Flip Ultra (this product).

I consider this one to be the younger brother to the MinoHD, with lower video quality, but also some things I like better than the HD model. Therefore I’m giving this 3.5 stars, and here is why.

Here’s what I like BETTER:

1. the larger viewing screen on the camera – as compared to the HD version, this one has a much better viewing screen and a much better field of vision. the HD version has to be some distance away from what you’re filming in order to get a good view, but with the ultra you can be much closer to your subject and still see all around them

2. more space – 120 minutes means I can carry this thing with me all day and take create 640×480 video, up to 2 hours worth, and that’s important if you’re out and about (although I wish there was a way to put a memory card into it for more space)

3. The product has a better surface for holding and gripping the camera. The HD version is glossy and slick, where as the Ultra version has a more matte finish on the case so it’s easier to hold.

Here’s what I don’t especially care for:

1. It requires batteries. The HD model is rechargeable, so you just plug it into the USB on your computer and the battery recharges itself. The Flip Ultra takes AA batteries, and while you certainly can use rechargeable batteries, I consider this a step backward. (the batteries also add weight)

2. it’s only 640×480 – this is pretty much bottom end for video capture these days, especially when most digital cameras are now able to record in HD dimensions; if you are super concerned about presenting your finished video in HD, this product is NOT for you

What is the same?

1. The USB plug is a flip-out in both models, you just press on the release latch and the USB plug flips out – just plug it into your computer and the software starts up automatically (note that the ultra version does have the latest version of the software which has some additional picture capture and uploading options – you can get this from the website too)

2. From power on, to ready to go, both cameras are FAST. Push the power button, set the date/time (only first time you turn it on) and the camera is ready to go. Push the record button and you’re off. Much faster than many digital cams on the market.

3. One button recording – same on both, it’s a big red button that you can’t miss.

4. Good sound quality. The mic on the front of the device gets the sound quite well, without the need for external mic.

5. TV output cable and plug. If you want to show your video on a TV without having a computer around, you can use the included audio/video plug to watch your movies (just remember that your battery will run down faster)

Overall I think this is a great addition to the Flip video line – just consider it the more consumer version vs. prosumer (HD level). For the price, storage space, and ease of carrying it everywhere, I’m giving it 3.5 stars. I removed 1.5 stars because of lack of rechargeable features, and it’s slightly heavier than the HD model.

I absolutely loved this camera when I bought it. The video is great and it is super easy to use. The problem is that the flip is not compatible with my Apple desktop. Flip bills itself as being Apple compatible and while you can download the files to the computer hard drive as soon as you try to save the video to disk or move it to your desktop the quality degrades so badly that the video is worthless. I have called flip many times and gotten different answers every time and nothing has worked. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you have a PC.

The Flip is easy to use and quite portable. It isn’t as small as then newer ones, but it is easy enough to carry with you most of the time. Video quality is excellent – I don’t know why you’d require HD, but if you do – pick something else. But if you just want very good video – this will be great. Microphone is a little weak, but reasonable. Only negative – I found that I really didn’t like the Flip software for editing videos, but no matter – I just use iMovie. However, the videos don’t REQUIRE editing – just a personal thing. You can upload them straight to the web as is.

Cool Little Camcorder
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this Camcorder for my nephew. Over the holidays we played around with it and made some videos, which, to my surprise, came out very sharp in picture and in sound. It was also easy to transfer to my computer (Macbook Pro). However, we had to send the first one back as it froze for some reason while using it the second day. We switched batteries to see if that might have been the cause, but it wasn’t. I called the manufacturer and was informed to get a replacement since it was only a few days old. Since my nephew was really happy with it otherwise and due to the fact the the majority of the feedback is positive, we did in fact replace it for another one. This time, everything is up to par. For the money and for what it is, it’s worth buying. I am thinking about purchasing one for myself. It’s a great little camcorder. Also, two thumbs up for Laura I’s review. Her review helped us set up the camcorder in no time at all. Very simple to use and straight forward.

I decided to buy the Flip. I love it. It’s so user friendly, anyone can operate it. You don’t have to be a technical genius to learn to use it. There are very few commands unlike the camcorders with a thick manual of info. You can’t go wrong and you’ll have videos of your kids in no time. I always have mine on hand so I can capture my kids’ funny moments, birthday songs, anything. Makes it easier to share the videos with friends and family too.

Great for posting videos online
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This video camera is the cheaper one of the Flip Video options. It is the first Flip camera that I have owned, although I have seen the more expensive one and also have nice video camera to compare it to.

I was a little surprised that this one runs on batteries (meaning it is not rechargable) and is a little less sleek than the more expensive version. Based on those two features, if I were buying it, I’d probably opt to upgrade to the next version.

But for what it is, it takes pretty good video. The screen on it is a nice size and allows you to watch the video you just took. It’s also easy to pass around at a party to allow others to watch your video or take some themselves. It’s so easy and intuitive to use that even my mom could operate it without reading a manual.

It’s also nice that you don’t have to use a cable to connect it to a computer to download video. Instead, there is a USB “dongle” that just slides out the side and allows you to connect the device to your computer.

Overall, it is great for quick, impromptu video that you would have never been able to take before. Great for posting funny videos on Facebook as well!

Easy to use point-and-shoot-video
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the third video camera I’ve purchased since my daughter was born…a really long time ago. I’ve progressed through technology from 8mm tapes (the first) to direct-to-dvd recording (the second)and now to the Flip Ultra.

This camcorder has some major positives.

First: Simple out-of-the-box setup. After you insert the included AA batteries and turn on the machine, the Flip prompts you to choose your interface language and set the date and time. All of these are completed with an intuitive (and familiar to most digital camera users) 4-way controller button. Less than a minute. It took me longer to attach the cord for the wrist strap.

Second: Ease of use. Four buttons: power, record, forward and delete plus the four-way ring controller (for zooming and scrolling through stored video). I complain frequently about inadequate documentation for users. This hardly needs any due to its simple, intuitive interface.

Third: Ease of offloading/sharing. You can use Flip’s own site (I haven’t tried yet, but it looks easy enough). It’s bundled software will also send from the camera (via your Internet-connected computer) direct to Youtube and myspace. It will also create a folder (and convert from the default .mp4 format to .wmv) on your PC to store your video before transfer to other video-capable sharing locations online. Connects to a computer via a concealed USB port, which is the only other user interface on the Flip.

Finally: Flip’s sharing software (embedded in the camera) is relatively easy to use. Anybody who used a record-to-dvd camera in the past will remember nested sets of folders for audio and video that could easily confuse the less technically inclined user.

Shortcomings: Nothing worth griping about at this price point. Video resolution is 640×480 at 30 fps. This is not going to mistaken for high end video. In good lighting the quality is perfectly acceptable; dimmer light adds obvious graininess. The USB port flips up from a recessed stored position on the camera’s side. I connected it without problems to a desktop, laptop and netbook, but I recommend making sure you have USB extension cable, because of the location of USB slots on computers is variable.

For a little more than a hundred dollars, this is a very portable, extremely easy to use camcorder. Perfect as long as you manage your expectations on video quality.

Do not buy this as a substitute for your camcorder – picture quality is terrible
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ll start by saying I’ve been using a 5 year old Sony camcorder until I bought this, which I was hoping would be a replacement. To compare the two is a joke. The Flip doesn’t live up to the quality of a good camcorder at all. This is not the video recorder you want if you are trying to get high quality picture or your are not within 10 feet of your subject. The zoom is so limited as to be almost useless, plus the picture gets fuzzy when you are zoomed all the way in. With no image stabilization, the picture jumps around a lot becuase you can see every movement of your hand while you take the video. The lighting has to be perfect as well. When I recorded in dim light, the picture had a lot of snow in it. My husband joked that it looked like the video was from 1984. On top of that, the movies you do take are not easily uploaded into iMovie, so if you are a Mac user who uses iMovie, I wouldn’t recommend this.

That said, I paid $89 for this and about $400 for my camcorder, so maybe I was expecting too much. This product you can use for a toy, but I certainly wouldn’t count on it to capture moments like school plays, or sporting events or really anything you’d like to make a quality DVD out of later. I might recommend it only for short, simple videos you may want to post on Youtube.

To sum it up, the Flip is no substitute for a camcorder. If I knew before I bought this what I know now, I would never have purchased it — even for $89. I think I’m just going to give it to my 5 year old to play with and keep using my camcorder for everything.

A Gem
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just got my Flip Ultra (2nd. Generation) today and couldn’t be happier. Only had it an hour or so, so can’t speak to the longevity or much else, but the video’s are really great. The spec’s say a processor with at least 2 GHz is required so I had some trepidation on ordering. I have an old computer I put together myself and the AMD cpu runs at 1.48 GHz. So I expected the movies not to play well if at all. But much to my surprise they play without a hitch. Blown up to full screen there is some slight pixelization. Anyway, anything but full screen is fine.

The sound indoors is equally great, outdoors wind noise is a problem. Low light is also a problem but no more so than with many other camcorders. Wish it had a protective lens cap and a decent zoom. Even with a carrying pouch the lens is bound to get scratched.

The real kicker is the Flip plugs into my PS3 and plays like a charm on my 37″ Panasonic TV. Even stretched to fill the screen there is no stutter whatsoever. This little camcorder is well worth the money, the colors are vibrant and the video is clear even on my TV. I really don’t need to run these movies on my computer anymore, except to email or save them, (and that works well also). If you have a PS3 just plug it into a USB port and be amazed. Now I wonder how the Ultra HD would have worked on my PS3? That was my first choice, but because of my slow computer I opted for the standard model.. If anyone has tried, please post your results.

I bought the Flip Ultra for my two granddaughters who are 11 and 13 to use. They had been borrowing my Kodak camera to make videos, quite frequently. Just girls fooling around, making a funny video with friends, and wanting to play it back. The ease of the Flip has made this much easier, and they can show it back right on the television. We all get to see the minimovies they are making. I love this product and would recommend it highly. Quality is fantastic, and the price is worth every penny. The Flip will help with making memories for a long time.

Love the Flip
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was afraid of modern technology, so I originally bought a video camera that uses mini tapes. Well, it’s hard to share that footage. I bought the Flip as a way to video tape my kids & share with my family around the country. The only thing I don’t like that happened yesterday was it turns off on it’s own after a while. My mom, whom is technologically challenged, was going to tape my kids & me as we came down a huge slide at a carnival. I turned it on for her, but she said it powered off by the time we got to the tops of the slide.

Capture and Playback at Will, Easily…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camcorder came with dead batteries. After several failed attempts to start it, popped in new batteries and it finally started.

First of all this camcorder cannot replace your regular video camera. It has limitations in terms of zoom and picture quality in low light.

I love this camcorder. I gave it 5 stars, because it takes “Easy” to a whole new level

-You do not have to worry about any flash card (the format, the capacity, the ridiculous high price) or tape or CD. It stores video and sound in its internal memory.

-You do not have to worry about carrying a USB cord because it has an inbuilt USB arm that pops out.

-You do not have to worry about carrying a software CD. The software is built into the camcorder and loads it when you connect it to your computer.

-You do not have to worry about recharging batteries because it runs on easily available 2 AA batteries (but you can buy a rechargeable battery pack for a price from the Flip store).

-You do not have to worry about carrying an extra bag for a video camera. This camcorder easily fits into a purse or trouser pocket.

-You do not have to worry about your camcorder taking its own sweet time to start up. This starts in a jiffy and you are ready to go.

You are ready to capture and playback video at will, easily…

Construction:

Body is made of plastic like material. It looks good and feels quite light when you hold it. Battery cover is located just below the lens and feels delicate. The attached USB arm, I feel, is not a good design. Even though it is light, I provide support to the camcorder when it is attached to the USB port of my laptop. So if you have to connect it to a Desktop, it might hang awkwardly from the USB port (I let it hang from my laptop USB port for about 5 minutes, it did not look it was in any danger of breaking off)…..You can buy a USB connector from the Flip store at, of course, a price. The screen is very clear to see what is being captured or to watch your video played back.

Operation:

It is extremely easy to operate and has very few buttons. You start recording and playback videos right out of the box. Nothing to load, rewind, fast forward. If at all you need to go through the instruction manual, you can cover it in about 15 minutes.

Picture Quality:

Under bright conditions and out in the open the picture quality is excellent. The picture is sharp and the colors, true and beautiful. Under well lit conditions inside, the picture again is excellent. But under low light conditions it is grainy. Since it has very limited zoom, you need to move closer to the subject to get a good close up.

Sound Quality:

The sound quality is excellent. It is sharp and clear

Software:

Self installing software installed without any problems on my Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit system. Again it is easy to use and create movies with your videos. You can also capture snapshots from your videos through the software. This is great because now I do not have to switch from video capture to still photo capture and then back again.

This camcorder is a well thought out quality product…..

Finally…

I called Amazon for a price adjustment for this camcorder (I paid $149.99 and the price fell by $15.00 three days after I received the camcorder). I was informed that the price adjustment policy has been canceled…bummer…But the customer service guy was okay about returning the item and buying at the new lower price. Huh???

Excellent, Compact Camcorder
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R36XMSX3O7L286 I’ve made a video review, using the Flip Ultra Camcorder, so that you can see the audio/video quality (Keep in mind I had to compress the video a little bit for Amazon), and I also show how to use the camcorder.

In my opinion, this is an excellent camcorder for a novice, or someone who just wants an easy to use camcorder that is small and compact. I personally don’t need more than 2 hours recording time and it’s wonderful not having to purchase tapes.

The price is actually less than many digital cameras. I’ve wanted to own a camcorder for a long time, and the Flip Ultra has finally met my standards for: quality, value, and ease of use.
