I used this camera a few times and then it died. It won’t power on. Unfortunately, It was over 90 days old(warranty period) so it’s my loss. The company has not been too helpful.

I purchased this Flip Ultra at Sam’s club & it’s one of the best video camcorder I ever had.The software is built in the Flip camcorder so I can use it to any computer & it’s already format to AVI files & MPEG 4, not like my Sony mini Dv and Sony DVD camcorder, it needs to be reformat to MPEG files to your personal computer & that is time consuming.The only negative about the Flip Ultra is, there is no memory slot to expand video recording. It has a build in memory card that will last you 60 minutes of recording time, then the fun is over…

I bought this camera for my 9 year old granddaughter’s birthday. I have one and she loved taking videos with mine. She said it was the best birthday present ever. It is so easy to use and with little help the first time she downloaded her videos herself. We both love this camera.

Sound quality poor if recording > 6 feet away

Great little camera BUT I tried to use it for recording a presentation to do presentation skills training and the sound quality was just not good enough or loud enough. The picture was good. It is also very difficult to pan smoothly or zoom smoothly when using the little tripod. I wish it had the ability to have an external microphone and remote control. I had to return it because it did not meet my needs for this specific use. For personal use it would be great fun to use casually. Very easy to use on Mac and PC.

Only Downside: Playback Audio

The Ultra is a fine upgrade. It has a much clearer viewfinder screen and significantly improved optics.

One problem.

The company says they reduced playback audio levels to allow users to review clips discreetly. A bad decision, in my opinion. The playback level is such that you’re sure you weren’t close enough to the subject and re-record. Increasing the playback audio level to what it was on original Flip camcorder – or allowing users to adjust volume – should be on their engineering front burner.

Otherwise, a design marvel.

We purchased this to replace our miniDV camera which had begun eating tapes. Once transferred to the web, the quality of the movies are every bit as high, and the convenience factor is amazing. The simple controls allow my three year old daughter to happily create her own ‘bideos’. Recommended.

We bought our Flip Ultra not quite a year ago, and it served its purpose as advertised – we were truly generally happy with the product. I should also share that we weren’t heavy users, and took very good care of it. Recently it stopped turning all the way on, so we can no longer record or play back. Internet searching revealed many others with the same problem. Flip’s response? Sorry, Charlie. We won’t even offer to repair it for a cost, and this is what happens to electronics. It seems perfectly rational for it to fail before you’ve had it for a year. Enjoy your brick.

I would caution folks that Flip is very firm about their 90-day warranty, and and when you judge what you’re spending, consider it to be a disposable item that you could have to replace at your own cost anytime after 90 days.

I used this product only once for 10 minutes, and then it broke. Now, I know why it has only a 90 day warranty. I was within the 90 days; mfg should have simply replaced the unit; instead, it offered to repair it for me.

I also owned the non-Ultra version, which worked fine. The difference between it and this are the Ultra does sound better and play better. My non-Ultra did not break.

My brother is a soldier in Afghanistan, his wife is alone here in the States. I am always looking out for ways I can make their experience better, so for Christmas I got them each one of these cool, easy-to-use cameras so they can make each other little update videos and say “I love you” in a much more personal way. Boy did I hit the jackpot, my sister-in-law was so happy with this little camera and said she figured out how to use it and send the videos right away even though she considers herself a non-techy kinda gal. She’s also said it’s so small that she just carries it around everywhere and at anytime she can tape her daughters or little scenes of home to send over to Ryan in the Middle East. Pretty cool, everyone should get one!

I absolutely love this video camera! I bought one for myself last summer and found that it was so easy to use that I bought one for my husband for Christmas. The video comes out great and the sound is crystal clear. The built in software makes it so simple to create movies, greeting cards and video emails for family and friends. You can automatically upload videos to your favorite websites and capture still frames from videos. Simply put, I Love the Flip!!!

Something WRONG!

There’s something WRONG with this product!

I’ve had it for about 3 hours now and can’t find a single thing I don’t like about it! I was expecting fingerprints to show up on the body from what I read in an earlier review but there’s none. The body of the one I received doesn’t shine and feels like velvet almost. Reviews led me to believe the LCD display would have a great picture (which it does) but I was surprised at the quality of its output when viewed using Windows Media Player! I’ve had no problem with sticky buttons either.

The instructions are a little skimpy but The Flip is really intutitive so that isn’t really a problem.

AHH! I know what the problem is…

IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! This is really one heck of a product and you won’t be sorry if you purchase one! It’s not a $10,000 top-of-the-line camcorder used by the 6 o’clock news but I wouldn’t be surprised to see an occasional newsclip taken by private citizens using this device.

Easy, easy, easy! I love how easy this is to use and how much fun it has been. While it is not the stunning quality of my sony camera, it is more than adequate and really fun. My students have no problem using it and I’m not worried about it getting damaged. I would suggest this product anytime.

Nice camera, lame software

I got this camera last year in order to get videos of my daughter’s first Christmas. Well when I turned it on and recorded it worked fine, at least as far as playing it back on the camera went. When I tried to download the vids to my computer however, it was no end of a PITA. I forget how many times I had to reinstall the software – probably 5 times maybe more? I know I spent well over 3 hours on the phone with their tech support who admitted that there were still some bugs in the software (for which I was given detailed instructions to patch). The long and the short of it was though that I didn’t get any Christmas video because I was still in software hell and couldn’t get the stuff I’d recorded as practice off the thing. Just as I was about to send it back and write a scathing review, up popped my Picasa and downloaded all the vids as neat as you please for me. So, future disasters averted, thanks to Google, no thanks to Flip Video.

What makes me think of this now in August? I just plugged the thing in to load some videos and surprise surprise the Flip software glitched out on me immediately and Picasa again saved my vids.

So, buyer beware. The camera is great for what it is, the software package that comes with it, a waste of memory.

I got this for one reason, and one reason only. Frank. The camera is drawn to him. Yes. He is a tad overweight. Yes. He drinks to much.

I first started filming Frank on my cell phone, when he was eating corn. His bites were methodical and precise, his execution complete, not a kernal remained. Eye contact with the camera all the way through. I lost that phone and the memories contained within it while on a trip. It’s somewhere in Central America.

Moving on. I haven’t seen Frank since getting this camera, so it is tough to adequately review it. I did break up with a girl that I shot a video of, so from that point of view, it will give a lasting imprint. No. Not that kind of video.

Videos are windows into events that occurred at some point. But…is the presence of the camera in and of itself altering those being viewed? I suspect many of you are looking for something to capture life’s little moments – a quickly growing child, a vacation, perhaps a video of you watching your favorite show (yes. So postmodern). Think twice. This act of observance changes that which is being observed. Heidenberg, I think. So? Are you a wave or a particle.

Fun little thing

Pros: Got this for my 11 yr old daughter as an Xmas gift. She is enjoying using it with her friends, and also by herself. She also uses it before giving an oral presentation in her classes to see how she appears. This has helped her immensely in her presentations, believe it or not! It’s nice and simple to use.

Cons: When we tried to email an video, my browser said it was too big (I have DSL and use Firefox). We also put one on Youtube.com privately, and the quality was extremely poor. Very pixel-y. You just get an hour time and so have to keep up with downloading or deleting to keep using it.

Recommended for kids to experience themselves more fully.

I bought the Flip Ultra (30 min capacity) for my daughter on a deal of the day sale at a great price. It’s easy to use and the quality of the video when we plugged it into our 50″ TV was fine. It is VERY bare-bones in terms of features, but that is perfect for her. I would not have bought it for the full price ($149?), but for $60 it was just right!

The Flip camcorder has its drawbacks, but at its best, it is an ultra-portable, lightweight and braindead camcorder. I can drop it in my purse next to my digital camera and my cell phone (it’s not much larger than either) and be sure that I capture any special moments as I’m about on a day-to-day basis with my daughter. No more missing first baby steps or first words.

This camera is perfect for the non techno saavy, like myself. Its USB port connects directly from the camera, so there’s no wires to lose. I wish that its batteries charged on an AC adapter, rather than using regular AA’s.

The photo quality is decent, but it’s grainy in low light. The sound quality is excellent, much better than you’ll find on the camcorder function of any digital camera — which is the reason we got this in the first place.

The absolute biggest con is that the film can be pretty shaky as there appears to be no motion stabilization. So best use is standing still or on a tripod. Still, it functions fine for the price and its portability makes up for its shortcomings.

this camcorder has awesome movie picture quality and i’m very satisfied. i only have 2 complaints. the button is very hard to push, hard to turn off and on, and the recording length needs to be longer. i’d prefer 2 or 3 hour version or for this to be usb compatible or be able to have a longer memory card that you can put in.

Don’t buy the Flip camera in any format because it will be your worst nightmare. When you read all the wonderful comments about this camera, it makes you think that no better camera in the world exists. Folks, the Flip is a piece of fecal matter from start to finish. I bought one and it took less than a year for the worthless piece of crap to malfunction. Worse, I advised my students for a video production class that I teach to invest their money in Flip cameras. Out of the ten people who bought the Flip cameras, only one individual had any success getting the Flip and its incredibly finicky software to function properly. Most of my students found the Flip cameras an incredible pain in the neck. The software rarely worked and the quality of the camera is largely abysmal. Most also had their Flips break down on them and had to get a replacement, but even then the replacement Flips–all brand new straight out of the colorful boxes–didn’t work properly.

The Flip camera isn’t worth buying, even if they gave this piece of compost away and paid you to buy it, Flips still aren’t worth buying. You buy what you pay for when you get a Flip, and what you get is chiseled by a marvelous Madison Avenue advertising sales job. The support service for Flips is a travesty,just as the camera is a joke. Please, do not waste your money on this inferior product. I thought that I had found the ideal camera for college students, but it turned into a nightmare for them when they had to edit and produce videos. Ignore all the positive comments about this camera. Those complimentary comments fooled me, too. This is junk and the people who make and sell it to unsuspecting people should be tarred and feathered.

This is what I have been waiting for. I got this for Christmas this year and it was all I ever hoped for and more. I opened the package, put the batteries in and was ready to start recording. It is so small, I can carry it in my purse or diaper bag and be ready to quickly capture my kid’s antics. I love the fact that it is so accessible, it literally takes about 5 seconds to get this thing ready to use! I LOVE it. My mom saw me having so much fun with mine that she got online and ordered it for my sister too. You can’t beat the price or usability. AWESOME product! The other great thing is that since it is so easy to use, my 8-year-old can take it out and snap videos of me and dad. If you want to buy a great baby gift…this is it!

I used the Flip Video Ultra on a trip to Beijing for the Olympics. I used it with a friend and we mainly took short videos on the subway, great wall, etc. Because the camera is so small it’s convenient to bring anywhere. The video quality is alright for close shots. Don’t expect to zoom in very much. It was great for short and close up videos.

Just what I wanted

I bought this to replace a Hi8 camera that we didn’t use much, and eventually broke. I wanted something cheap, and digital, since we store all our pictures and videos on the computer. This camera was cheap, it has high quality video, it’s small enough that we bring it with us when we go places, and the video transfers easily to the computer. Using Windows Media Center, I can then burn my own DVDs of the video. Very easy, very convenient. It’s just what I wanted. I was nervous because I saw a lot of bad reviews of the original flip video, but I guess the Ultra Series fixed those problems.

I had high hopes for this product, but the software was its downfall. I put the software on three of my computers thinking it was a problem with one of them, but they all did the same thing. It tried to crash two of them. When I installed it, it changed everything on my desktop, the theme, the background, the size of the desktop fonts. Very intrusive software.

Also, it got to when I had the camera plugged in, it would eject it automatically within a few seconds making transfer of some of my video impossible. Didnt bother requesting a replacement, so that could have been an option as well. I read the other reviews and many were positive, so it works for some, but not on mine. (Win XP SP3)

I’ve been thinking about trying this camera for a long time and finally bought one after a friend told me how much they loved theirs. This is the easiest and most fun video camera ever. It’s small and compact and it couldn’t be easier to use. If you’ve been on the fence go ahead and get the Flip Cam. Be sure and get the 60 minute. One warning – your pets will get tired of starring in all of your amazing videos. )

Finally used it for the first time 2 nights ago. Wow, the video is much better than I thought it would be. I agree with those that say the record button could use a little work. I’m uploading the first videos to youtube right now, and really, in every way, I would be hard pressed to see how they could make it any easier than this.

I’m really shocked at how good the quality of the video is. Just amazing, particularly for the amazon price.

I bought this for a website I’m working on, but I think this will get a lot more use than I thought it would. Little things that Grandma would like to see, now made super easy.

The Flip and Macs

This is an excellent recorder, and I just wanted to confirm that the latest software bundled with it was 100% compatible with my Powerbook and OS/X Leopard.

I was able to convert the AVI files by opening them in Quicktime and saving them as .mov files. Then I could import them into iMovie8 and build a movie from my clips.

Terrific value, and exceptional picture quality in all sorts of light levels.

I am pleased with the Amazon service and response that I received when I made my online purchase. I am pleased with the Flip because I began using it almost without reading the instructions (which I did!!!). I was amazed with the strength of the voice recorder on playback. I find it easy to use, and I’m still learning how to use it efficiently. I would like more specific instructions with the brochure and with more instructions on how to download the video and individual pictures I take more efficiently.

For your advertisement, include more information on what is in the total package when buying the accessories along with the camcorder, as opposed to buying the camcorder only.

I have had my flip ultra for about one month. I really like it! It’s small size makes me grab it and bring it with me everywhere. The quality of the video is great for everyday recording. Even night video is surprisingly clear. I LOVE the simplicity of the flip. I looked into the mino and the ultra and I picked the ultra because it felt better in my hand. The mino really was too thin for me. I already have 2 friends who have bought this camera after I have raved about it. It is a lot of fun!

A great deal

I bought the flip a few days prior to birth of my first child. We used in while my wife was in labor and it worked out great. Since all our immediate family came, but they could not all be in the delivery room, we were able within minutes of the delivery to share the video with them.

It works easy, just like it says. The only other comment is that my laptop USB plugs are not at the same height as the USB plug on the flip, so I end up propping up my laptop about 1/3 of an inch so that they line up better.

I’ve tried installing the software for this camera on 4 different machines:

- a large, recent Dell workstation running xp professional

- a Macintosh G4 workstation running Tiger 10.4

- an older Dell laptop running xp professional

- a Mac powerbook pro running Tiger 10.4

On all platforms, the initial install either didn’t work (interrupted with errors) – or if it did, all functions of the camera that were advertised to take 10 or 15 minutes actually would have run for 10 or 15 HOURS (according to the computed time of completion once the number popped up.) So the camera is useless to me for any computer interaction.

Having said that, the camera itself was a very pleasant surprise after having read some of the negative reviews. Mine actually appears to be a pretty solid little unit – seemingly worth well beyond what I paid for it. I think, given it’s function, both the image and audio quality are surprisingly good – markedly better than any cell phone generated video I’ve seen, for sure.

Another positive note – tech support seems to be hanging with me in trying to fix my problem – except that I need to interpret all their instructions for the Mac since I can’t convince them I’m not working on a PC (I just settled on trying to get this to work on the Macbook pro.)

Given the reviews in general, I’m glad to see I’m obviously in the minority with this problem – I suppose this will culminate on a camera replacement.

Super easy to use but not ideal indoor video resolution

THE GOOD: The Flip Ultra is very small (the size of a small digital camera) and it is also very easy to use – just pop in 2 AA battery (included), press the gray on-switch, then press the red record button and you are video taping! There are also switches to zoom in and out. Uploading is super easy – just flip open the built-in USB connector, connect it to your computer and the FlipShare program will automatically upload your videos to your computer. You can then upload them to YouTube or email them to your pals.

THE NOT SO GREAT: The resolution of indoor videos of my two kids are somewhat grainy. The microphone is somewhat weak but still audible. The included soft pouch is too flimsy to protect your Flip. I got a $5 Small Body Glove camera bag from Wal-Mart instead.

NOT SO SMOOTH SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: When I plugged my Flip to my computer, Plug N Play was automatically activated but the software did NOT install. I had to go to the product’s website to download the updated version which subsequently installed without any problems.

GREAT TECH SUPPORT: I emailed tech support of my software installation problem late one night and received a reply the next morning. They also have live tech support.

CONCLUSION: The Flip Ultra is an affordable, ultra-portable, and easy to use video camera to capture those precious moments. Indoor resolution is not ideal but hey you’ll at least have somewhat grainy videos whereas you may not even have your super-duper bulky video cam on hand.

I bought the Flip camcorder for a family member in RI. She used it for about a week having to call support for help in getting it to work. She finally had to send it back to the manufacture to either get it fixed or get a new one.

Referred to as “the shoot and share camcorder,” this nifty hand-held gadget is about the size of my MP3 player and is really easy to use. (And I am technologically challenged.) I actually figured it out all by myself without going through feelings of extreme inadequacy. My biggest hurdle this time was getting the box open (actually, finding the nerve to open the box).

It comes with a fabric pouch to carry it in (or you could buy a small inexpensive sturdy camera case). It also comes with a small hand-strap and cable connectors to attach to the TV, if you want to. There is a quad-fold start guide and a website for customer support. Oh! And it comes with 2 regular Duracell AA batteries!–so no special batteries to buy. (Note: the pamphlet recommends Energizer e2 Lithium AA batteries, which are also pretty easy to find.) The unit itself is about 1″ deep, about 6″ long, and about 3″ wide. Kind of reminds you of a hand-held digital camera, which it kinda is (except no SanDisk for the pix, you just download pix/video to your PC). It has a switch on the side that you slide and a USB port flips out, hence, “Flip Video” gadget. You flip the switch again, and it pops back in. It captures 60 minutes of video (I thought I saw 2 gig somewhere) and runs down the remaining time on the screen so you can tell what you have left.

The box claims that you have one-touch recording, 2 x digital zoom, instant playback and delete. It claims that you can launch built-in software, snap still photos from videos, make custom movies, watch instantly on TV, get DVDs made at stores, email videos and publish online. They state you can also upload your videos to AOL or YouTube.

Although I have not tested all the features yet, I did point and shoot a video and delete it, and it was painless. Yes, it does have sound and you can use a tripod with it if you like. The zoom feature is only 2 x digital, but it works. You can also easily set a time and date to the gadget when you initially start it up.

It’s a nifty gadget you can slip into your pocket or purse. Welcome to the 21st Century!

I love this little camcorder. Flip is a great name. I got to pick colors too. It’s handy for those times when you want to record a moment, grandkids playing, pets being fun. You just point and shoot, and make a mini movie. The attachment to download pops out of the side of the Flip, seconds to download, and your ready to record again. You mess up and you can delete and start over. Great idea, fun to use. Would make a fun gift for any one, because it’s easy to use!

I took this on a trip to Europe (from the US), and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be: small so I would carry it everywhere, easy to shoot and unobtrusive, batteries lasted a long time, easy to upload to my PC, and the quality surprisingly good. The only thing that didn’t work as expected every time was the software to upload videos to the PC. That sometimes froze up for no apparent reason, and then fixed itself just as mysteriously.

You are not going to win any Academy Awards with the videos shot from this thing, and lack of control over the audio input is annoying. But you will retain some nice memories of trips that you may not have gotten if you had to lug around a heavy, expensive, higher-quality video camera. In a controlled, quiet setting some of the videos turned out quite good.

It took ages, but now it’s fully supported by iMovie ’08 — at least on Intel machines. I haven’t tested it on older PPC machines and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are still issues there.

I don’t use the bundled application. I mount the camera and traverse folders to find the videos. I then drag them to iMovie ’08.

On a MacBook (Intel machine) the AVI files can be directly edited, no transcoding required. This is a vast improvement over the earlier release.

This product is now well suited for use on OS X 10.5 and an Intel machine running iMovie ’08. I would now give it four stars.

Unfortunately, this cute, easy to use camcorder did not record sound, or did not play it back – Manufacturer suggested returning it. So I will be returning it for a replacement. The video was spectacular even for distance. I took it to the beach and took fabulous video of my favorite SoCal beach. But my narrative did not come through. Silent film. So, sorry no video review.

A flip for the flip

While not nearly in the ballpark of more elaborate (and expensive) camcorders, this little pocket-size device is quite serviceable. The flip is easy to use and the resolution is actually better than one might think. Downloading clips is quite easy through the use of the built in USB, although I would suggest using an extension cable rather than trying to directly connect the device to a PC. Have used the flip at baseball games and at an Air and Water show. The clips have turned out well, although I would suggest using it for close up type recording. The zoom feature is limited, but using it to film family and friends has turned out very well. The battery life is actually longer than one might think and starting and stopping recording could not be easily. So, overall a very good device for recording events that are in close proximity with ease of use being a strong point. Update: After three months, the LCD on the product stopped functioning. The screen is not repairable and Flip Video offers no repair options, with only a 90 day warranty. The recorder still functions, but without the ability to see what one is filming, it is problematic.

I thought this product was a really great idea, read the reviews and bought it. Simple to set up and get going, I could readily see my images on the screen. But that’s where the bad/ugly began. I tried every which way to view the video on TV’s and computer without any success at all. I’m not a novice with any of these devices. I went back and forth with the product folks and they were useless. The Good: After total frustration I emailed Amazon about returning the product and they responded almost immediately with directions. I sent product back and received a full refund within a week or so (kudos to Amazon for their customer service and satisfaction). The Flip folks have a good idea but they need to work a bit more on compatibility and support.

Overall, this camera performs quite well. With few controls and largely intuitive operation, it is difficult to imagine how a video camera could be easier to use. The small size, quick response when turned on, and its use of standard AA batteries make this camera easy to carry around and always have ready for unexpected moments. Both video and audio quality seem reasonably good for the price.

There are limitations, of course. The 2X digital zoom provides little flexibility in composing shots, and the soft pouch is largely useless because it fits so snugly that it is a chore to get the camera in, and difficult to remove the camera quickly when needed. However, the main limitation is the lack of removable memory. The Flip Ultra has 2 GB onboard memory (ca. 60 min) which is fine for casual day to day use, but if you take it on a trip without a laptop, then once the memory is full you have few options for further filming other than deleting previous clips. The manufacturer claims that users have not requested removable storage, but this seems to be a common complaint in reviews. It is possible to circumvent this limitation by using, for example, a Delkin USB Bridge ($40 from the manufacturer) and additional storage memory such as USB memory sticks. The Flip Video camera works fine with the Delkin Bridge, but the transfer is SLOW (USB 1.1 convention), and one cannot transfer selected clips. Rather, each transfer will include the entire contents of the camera at that time including the Flip software. It also requires buying the Bridge and additional memory storage, but this approach will work when a computer is not available.

The Flip Ultra basically does what it claims to do, and provided one is aware of the limitations, it can be an excellent choice that is worth the price.

I first heard about this camera on the Oprah Show and I decided to come here to read the reviews. I have a very expensive Sony mini-DV camera that I have used to record memories over the last several years but my problem has been how to easily convert them to digital. So that is why I was interested in the Flip video camera. After reading the reviews, I felt the Flip Ultra camera was the one for me because it had twice as much memory as the regular camera (plus I like the orange option!)I ordered it and as soon as it arrived, I opened the box and the setup took less than a minute (literally!) I love the fact that it uses 2 AA batteries and then you set the date and time and you are ready to go! As soon as I had it ready to go, my 6 1/2 yr old peeked over my shoulder and said, “ooo, Mommy, what is that?” To which I responded, “my new video camera!” She promptly asked if she could use it (she has been using a digital camera since she was 2) and she was off and made her first video in a matter of minutes. I love the fact that the camera comes with video editing/sharing software that works on Mac or PC and it is super easy to use. The one thing that I would echo from the other reviewers is that it is a GREAT idea to buy the USB extension cable because it could be too easy to break off the USB connection arm if you don’t. I didn’t purchase the Flip branded cables because I didn’t see the need to have it color coded so I bought the Cables to Go version for less money Cables To Go – 19003 – 1M USB A Male to A Female Extension Cable (White) and am very happy with that. Since my daughter is so delighted with the camera, I think that I may have to purchase another camera so that I can use it! As my boss says, this is “cold dead finger technology”. You are going to have to pry this out of my cold dead fingers before I will give it up!

Fip Video Ultra Camcorder

What a great gadget! This product is everything it is claimed to be. Can be used right out of the box. E-mailing videos? No problem! Posting to YouTube? No problem! Marvelous natural light videos. Editing software limited but for 90% of my needs the camera’s capabilities will suffice. If more editing is needed, you’ll have to switch to another product such as Microsoft MovieMaker. (If only the Microsoft MovieMaker was so easy to use and realiable!)

I bought this camera as a gift for my husband and we’re both enjoying it so much! It is really easy to use AND it runs on AA batteries. Loading films into the computer is super easy too. The only problem we’ve had is loading longer videos. I’m not sure why, but loading videos longer than about 5 minutes seems to not work… something we need to check in to. Overall, we’re totally satisfied with the camera and can’t wait to take it to Disneyland!!!

I bought this over the new Flip Mino because of the fact this one uses AA batteries. after taking a test video on the way home, I promptly inserted the USB adapter into my computer, using a USB extender because I don’t have a laptop. The installer informed me that a new version of DivX was available, so I installed it. after that, while ignoring the on board software altogether, I simply dragged the .AVI files onto my desktop, and while having a small DivX logo in the bottom right of the video, the video played GREAT!!! this camcorder does SUPURB in low light situations and captures the features on peoples faces perfectly. I have not uploaded any videos to Youtube yet but can expect them to be great quality. Also, I have had NO problems with the record button already knowing that you had to press it until it clicks. The zoom is useful but pixilates slightly, but no problem there.

Overall I rate this product 5 stars and defiantly recommend it to a friend.

I’ve had 3 or 4 camcorders but never really used them. Those silly little tapes. How to migrate from tape to DVD. Clunky big old things with too many options. I needed something SIMPLE. Now, I am finally capturing videos of my child and having the videos in digital format on my PC is exactly what I wanted. It comes with software (installed on the camera, no CDs) that is functional but a bit slow. Overall, tho, I can’t say how happy I am to be capturing excellent videos of the growing up years.

Flip Video Ultra Series F260P 60-Minute (Pink) Camcorder + Accessory Kit

I bought this camera (not in pink, of course) for my husband’s birthday and he loved it. I have since bought 2 more as gifts and the pink one for myself. The only downside for Mac users is that most of the ‘fun’ editing features don’t work with a Mac, just Windows. My sister (for whom I bought one as a gift) has a PC and really enjoys the editing, adding graphics to the corners of her videos, splicing together small videos, and the list goes on. The quality of the image is extremely high, as is the sound. The plug-and-play feature of the videocam is terrific. The size is perfect for a large pocket, fanny-pack, or purse. It makes a great gift for a birthday, Christmas, graduation, or just because!

Video Quality: Obviously, a big factor that people worry about is video quality. The video quality of this camera is pretty nice, especially for the price that I paid. However, it is a bit washed out (especially indoors). 36/40

Audio Quality: The mic on this is also pretty nice, but it is a bit muffled. The mic on this is also pretty prone to wind noise. All else considered, the audio is still fairly crisp and clear. 17/20

Memory: While memory consumption is extremely efficient on this camera, better than you would find on most digital cameras that shoot in standard definition, the memory is completely non-expandable. The memory expandability is a pretty big factor when you only have a fairly limited amount of memory to work with. 14/20

Durability: Upon first impression, this camera does NOT feel very well built. Not to mention that it broke after a fall from chest height. 6/20

Features: This camera has what you need, but the zoom sucks (2x optical) and the features are very basic (no macro). 5/10

Portability: This camera is reasonably portable, it will fit in most pockets, but it is slightly bigger than your average digital camera. 8.5/10

Battery: The battery life on this is pretty nice, you will rarely have to change batteries, but the fact that this uses AA batteries is a slight negative point; however, on field replacement can be seen as an advantage. 9/10

Aesthetics: It’s not an eyesore to look at, but its Fisher Price-like look isn’t necessarily attractive. 2.5/10

Summary: Overall, this is a good product for freelance videographers. However, I would not recommend it for anybody else or if you need a camera that can take abuse. If you need a product like this but with better build quality, I would suggest the similarly priced Kodak Zi6, which shoots in 720p HD.

I wanted a camcorder for my upcoming trip…I love gadgets but I love quality too. This Flip video ultra(60 minutes) is great. I looked at the Sony, a few from JVC with internal flash memory and much higher quality models. I love the AA batteries cause I can change them as needed. Its small enough to take everywhere and the simplicity is great. The only cons are that you can’t move the camera too fast while recording and the zoom although only being 2X takes away from the picture quality.

I bought this for my brother who just had his first baby so that he could easily capture baby moments and share them (with me) on youtube. I also received one as a gift earlier in the year and LOVE it, though it does have some limitations.

Pros:

- compact, wire-free design is very travel friendly (the flipout USB is brilliant)

- very light

- cute

- very easy to use

- cheap!

Cons:

- Quality isn’t good enough for full-screen viewing (perfect for youtube) so it doesn’t really replace a real camcorder

- I wonder how long it’ll be before a video camera of the same quality is imbedded into (an affordable) cell phone

All in all, I highly recommend Flip but it’s not for everyone.

Flip Great for Grannies

I carry the Flip video camera in my purse so I can record the cute things my granddaughters say and do. I gave up on my son-in-law getting out the larger camcorder to record everyday moments. Time passes quickly and I want to remember my granddaughters little voices and mannerisms. Plus, they love for me to make “movies” of them doing ordinary things or of our outings. I’ve really enjoyed having this option in an easy to use format. The software that comes with the product is foolproof as long as you don’t change the name of the video file until AFTER you’ve made the movie. I made that mistake and the software couldn’t find the original, even though it hadn’t moved from the original folder.

I purchased the Flip Video Ultra Series from Wal-Mart.com over the summer and will be using it in my classroom to teach video Podcasting. I carry it in my purse, so I have it whenever that special video moment arises. It is very simple to use, even my 80 year old father tried his hand at it. I did have a little problem with getting the camera to snyc with the computer at first, but Pure Digital was very good at email responses, and in the end we just needed to go to the Flip Video site for the newest software. Pure Digital was willing to send my a new camera if that didn’t work. I have since purchased another camera for my brother for Christmas, to take videos of his 2 year old. This will be my Christmas gift for everyone on my list. It is fun, easy to use and the price is right! Two thumbs up for Flip Video!

Just what I need

As someone who would not use a camcorder very often, this is perfect. I would use it on vacation, film demolition derbies at the county fair, take it to the Chicago Auto Show, and other special occasions. Setup is just putting in batteries, turning it on and you are ready. I had no problem imputing the correct time and date. Recording is as easy as pressing the red button to start, and then to stop. Playback is just pressing the play button, selecting which video to watch and thats it. The screen may only be just over an inch, but I found it works very well. So if you are looking for a camcorder just for occasional use, I highly recomend the Flip Ultra.

The first Flip Ultra was returned under warranty because 4 different computers did not recognize the device, which meant there was some sort of malfunction. The replacement initially worked, but then developed the same problem. [...]

The manufacturer will not replace the current Flip because it’s no longer under warranty. I have not found any information on what the “fix” is, other than the manufacturer replacing the device until the warranty expires, then it’s your problem. Videos cannot be downloaded with the USB malfunction, so unless you only intend to view what you shoot on the tiny screen of the device, it’s useless.

I purchased a Flip Video camcorder for a recent trip to the Amazon. I didn’t want to take an expensive camcorder and, frankly, didn’t have the luggage space. I kept the Flip in my pocket like a cell phone for the entire trip. It was so easy to just pull out of my pocket and begin filming, I ended up using it constantly. Not only is it brain-dead easy to use, the image quality is fantastic. And so is the download process. You just plug it into the USB port and the software launches. I was burning DVDs with Windows’ built-in media tools in minutes. No need for manuals; the software is intuitive. I agree with other reviewers who criticize the record button — you sometimes have to push it hard — Flip needs to redesign this. And the device should offer a removable SD card instead of the fixed built-in storage. For the price, portability (this device could live in your pocket or purse) and ease of use, this camcorder will revolutionize the way you shoot video.

Why lose the viewfinder?

I saw this camera today as my boss just got one. I was wowed until I realized there’s no viewfinder. I believe many digital cameras are going this route and I don’t get it. My 52 year old eyes are presbyopic, a natural occurrence if one lives long enough; I can’t focus up close without reader glasses. I could use the viewfinder, if available, without glasses. Also, how does one see the screen in bright sunlight? If it’s like my cell phone, one can’t. Another reason for keeping viewfinders. My 2 cents.

Terrific camera . . . while it works

The color and sound from this little jewel is awesome considering its size and price. But here’s the rub — it only lasted three weeks past its warranty of 90 days. Then it would turn on, but not record or play or anything, even turn off. The batteries had to be removed to shut it down. I managed to make it work one more time by squeezing it so hard something inside must have moved and re-connected, but that only happened once in maybe twenty tries. Very disappointing since so much of today’s technology simply works till you get tired of it. I wouldn’t buy another one of these.

Perfect Camera to Throw in your Purse

We bought the Flip for our daughter for Christmas and she was very excited when she saw what she’d received. She was able to use it with good results and without referring to the instructions.

The only drawback seems to be that it eats batteries quickly (hence the 4 stars), so if you’re planning on using this for a lot of shooting, make sure you have plenty of batteries on hand.

Sound quality on Flip Video Ultra

I am incredibly disappointed in my Flip Video Camera. After 2 conversations with customer support, with each one telling us the other one was wrong, I still can’t get more than a whisper of sound coming from the Flip Camera. We have the volume turned up, the camera is 3 feet away from the subject matter who is talking in a normal voice, it’s inside so no extraneous noises and you have to hold the camera up to your ear to hear anything.

When the video is downloaded you have to turn the volume on your computer all the way up to hear it. No one at Flip can seem to take care of the problem.

I would not recommend this product at all!

Great hardware, lousy software

I bought this before a vacation trip to Atlanta. I especially wanted video of the fish in their great aquarium. When I got it, I wasted a lot of time trying to make it work after just looking at the little card, which is the only printed documentation they provide. Bad idea. Plug it into your PC and go through the Help files.

The pictures are fine. The main problem is that it is so small it is hard to aim it steadily and properly. The display washes out in sunlight, so I ended up zooming out and just pointing it in the direction of my target.

The software is very not-intuitive. Again, read the Help files. The editing program is totally crippled, to force you to buy the version that should have come with the camera in the first place. And if your PC is not of recent vintage, all the processing takes a looooong time.

Perfect for Accessibility

Don’t buy this camera thinking that you are going to get great quality video. You won’t. What this camera is great for is accessibility and capturing those moments on video that would have been lost otherwise. I have a young daughter and I have been able to capture SO many great moments that I would have only had in memory without this device.

I don’t even use the built in software with my Mac. I use an open source video converter called QTAmateur to convert the AVIs directly from the camera into MP4 for import into iMovie. It works great and I have been able to share lots of videos with friends and family.

30 minute white Flip video – perfect for what it is

You’re not going to make super high definition full length movies on this. All you can do with this is take up to 30 minutes of video at a time that you can share on YouTube or email to friends or store for later viewing.

As long as your expectations for becoming the next Scorsese with this remain realistic (i.e. LOW) this is the perfect casual video camera.

The controls are intuitive. I played with this a while before I got around to reading the directions. The software stays on the camera, so you can plug it into almost any computer and download pictures. The USB connection seems sturdy, but just to be sure, I put a book or something under the camera when I’ve got it connected to the computer.

The software that gets loaded on your computer so you can download, view, and edit your clips is pretty user friendly.

Thirty minutes is quite long enough for me. I drag my netbook with me on vacations, so if for some reason I get close to the time limit, I empty the camera out when I get back to the hotel and I’m good to go the next day. That said, I haven’t come close to using up 30 minutes in a day of vacation. I keep my clips fairly short (usually under a minute), and delete them on the fly if they are obviously not what I was going for.

This was a gold box item when I bought it, and the price was about $60-$70. I do think $130 (today’s price) is a little steep for 30 minutes of video when you can (today) get the 60 minute green Flip for $100 and the 120 minute black one for $130. Thirty minutes is fine, but if I can get 4 times that for the same price and (in theory) have the same quality machine, I’d go for that.

That said, this is a Five Star product for the price at which I bought it.

It changed my life!

I cannot believe how much I love this thing! I have an expensive SLR, but I find myself using the Flip so much more. That is because it is so convenient I carry it with me everywhere and find it easier to make a movie than explain things. The quality of the movies are “throw away” – but I have yet to have anyone complain. It isn’t about the quality of the video but about the content that people like. The Flip has great sound capture too!

Short and Simple — I bought one and then I bought a second one

A person doesn’t purchase two of the same item unless they feel they have a nice product at a fair price. This is a fun little recorder. Easy to use (even my 21 year old daughter, who hasn’t figured out her Ipod yet, uses it).

You must make sure you are filming during the day or inside with the lights on. As with many camcorders, there is no light to film in the dark.

Connects easily to the computer without cords (thank goodness–no more cords). Fits easily in purse to have readily accessible.

I’m happy with the two I purchased and would recommend whole-heartedly, especially as a gift for someone you’re just not sure what to get. Anyone with a computer would be able to work this and would enjoy it. I’ve gotten some nice quality little films and it films for about an hour. The batteries also last a long time.

No complaints at all from me!

Small, compact, easy to use and worth the $$ – get a case for it though! Not as great as a conventional camcorder, but it is so worth it when you are skiing or at a sporting event where you don’t want to lugg around the bigger version!!!!

The FLIP videa ultra series camcorder is compact and easy to use. It is my first foray into video cameras. It took about five minutes to get started and figure out how to use it. Having not used a video camera before, I was concerned that 60 minutes of video would not be enough, However, I am finding that most moments I want to capture only last about two minutes. Even when I have several of those in a day, I still have plenty of video time left.

Pro: Easy to use for newbie, small and portable, decent quality.

Cons: Quality of uploaded videos does not match quality on laptop, presumably because the process of shrinking videos for upload degrades quality. I need to figure out a way around that…maybe not use the software that comes with the FLIP or upgrade to the purchased version.

I love my Flip Video camera, I’ve had it for awhile now. It is so easy to use, recording and uploading videos is simply a breeze.

I gave my flip the ultimate extreme test – up the week trek to the top of Denali (Mount McKinley, Alaska) where temperatures were WAY below zero. It recorded all the video confessionals brilliantly – even the ones that perhaps I wish it didn’t, where I was delirious from altitude.

I love this camera. It has very good quality and does not cost that much. The good sides are that it will constantly record nonstop for 60 mins. I have a digital still camera with a record function that will stop after about 5-10 mins. It is also tough. I have dropped it on a wood floor right on the lens and it is fine. It is very easy to upload to your computer. The downsides are that the zoom is pretty terrible, and the screen is very small but that’s ok.

The Flip Video is an amazing product. The quality of the pictures and audio is remarkable, coming from a 2″ x 4″ camcorder with solid state storage instead of mechanical tape or disk, an hour long capacity in the Ultra model (adequate for most occasions), two AA cells for power, simple controls and zoom capability, easy connection to computer and TV, it is hard to find anything to criticize. Oh, yes. The playback audio from the internal speakers of the camera itslf is nearly inaudible, but OK on computer or TV.

Having trouble with Mac

I love the product, but it’s buggy with my mac laptop. I am going to get a netbook soon, so I’m still happy with the purchase, but Flip isn’t really fully functional for the Mac no matter what they say. I have not yet messed around with the HD new version. My neighbor has it, though, and I’m hoping they’ve worked out some kinks. It is small enough for large pocket, but the newer HD one is considerably slimmer.

Flip and a little flop

Nicely designed camcorder that takes very decent pictures. Yes, the on/off button in the center is difficult to use. It does not work correctly unless you press it EXACTLY in the center. This results in many no turn on presses or turn off presses to get it to work.

A major problem with the software is that it WILL NOT work with Apples Imovie08. It will work with Imovie06 but a recent update to Quicktime has resulted in video but no sound.

After two weeks I have still not heard from the company when this will be fixed. The camcorder works in Windows but not in Mac’s OSX.

A very nice product in now turning sour.

Stops working after warranty expires

Mine stopped working shortly after the 90 day warranty. Was used maybe 5 times and well cared for. It keeps turning itself off even with new batteries. It appears to be a software issue that they know about since there is information about this problem on their website. The device is nicely designed though so that it lats the 90 days and then you are stuck with a piece of junk.

This video camera is easy to use and fits in your hand, so its not to big. I don’t like how in order to record a event I have to be close to get the sound at great hearing range for playback later. I do like how its easy to upload, save and record your video’s onto a dvd if you have a dvd burner in your computer. My first video I created was my son’s preschool play and I enjoyed how it didn’t take long to upload the video to my computer. It took just a few minutes.

Problems with static and poor service

I had intermittent loud static on my videos, that popped up after it was too late to simply return the camcorder. After 17 emails, sending my camcorder in for repair, multiple attempts to reformat the camcorder and update software, the problem persists. Pure Digital Technologies sent polite emails that were of no help whatsoever and they ultimately refused to replace the camcorder. They refused, despite the fact that there were problems with my camcorder from early on.

If you purchase a Flip and it works well, you might be satisfied with the purchase. If you have trouble with your Flip, good luck on getting Pure Digital to do anything about it!

I had a bad experience with the Flip ultra. It stopped working after 100 days. They only are guaranteed for 90. They did end up replacing it and the second one stopped working after about 4 months. They wouldn’t replace or fix the replacement.

Obviously I will not be getting another Flip.

While the Flip Video camera is easy to use and sets up instantly, it comes with a hefty price tag; you’ll have to buy a new one every few months, because it stops working for no good reason. Flip Support will tell you to remove the batteries for three days (just pray you don’t need to film your daughter in her first rock concert), and then put fresh batteries in the camera. Voila! It works again for a moment, and then the next time you try to turn the camera on, it’s frozen again.

It comes with a three-month warranty, so if it breaks down at 91 days (even though you’ll spend a week going back and forth with tech support!), you’re out of luck.

The forums are FULL of people complaining about this very issue. Don’t waste your money!

Not as happy as I thought I’d be

I bought this Flip Video Ultra in July and today was only the second time I’ve tried it. When it does work, it makes quite acceptable videos – at least for my uses.

However, for me, it doesn’t work most of the time. I turn it on, it says I have 60 minutes to video tape and it is ready. I push the red button and nothing happens. I push the red button again and nothing happens. I might push the red button several times before it ever starts recording. By then, the object of my recording is long gone.

Then I pushed the button again and it wouldn’t STOP recording. I pushed the button four times. It wouldn’t stop recording. I finally turned it off.

I now consider this a waste of money, a commodity which is getting more and more dear with each passing day. I am very sorry to make this review only two stars, but that is for the only two times it has worked properly. I waited one year for the price to go down to where I could afford it – I should have saved my money and not bought this recorder.

Red Tape

We purchased the Flip Video for our son as a Christmas gift. We were on vaction over the holiday and it worked fine for the first couple of days. We were able to download video. On the third day the camera stopped working. We thought it was the batteries. After returning home, changing the batteries and attempting to download the camera, we were not able to do so. We contacted the company as per the directions included in the packaging. E-mails were exchanged with some trouble shooting tips. Nothing worked. They asked that we send the camera to them, they would make every attempt to rescue the video on the camera, repair the camera or exchange the camera. The camera was sent to them. A few weeks later another camera was received. It appears to be a refurbished camera that was not in the best looking shape. A form letter was in the packaging stateing that they could not figure out our camera’s problem. There was no mention of the retrieved video. I contacted them at the phone number given on the form letter. I inquired about the missing video and expressed my disatifaction with the condition of the replacement camera. They were not able to give me any answers and suggested that I contact them though the email links that I had saved.

For the two days that the camera worked it was great and my son had a blast using it. Two months later and he does not have it available to him is discouraging, though. When you spend over $100.00 for a gift you expect it to last longer than two days especially when it was taken care of. You should also be able to realistically expect good customer service, not form letters and a replacement camera that was in equal condition to the one returned.

Our overall experience has not been a good one. Good Luck

This is my second Flip Video camera. I just love it. It is small, about the size of a deck of cards, so easy to carry. It takes excellent videos, even in low to normal lighting. The software is built in so no extra CD software to install before use. It has the built in USB plug too. They thought of everything! The program is easy to use and understand, you can even add music and make a movie to upload to several online web sites, or send it out on an email. I wish they offered more music options but you can use your on MP3 music as well. The software that comes with the camcorder if basic, but you can use a more advanced movie./video programs to make the movie if you have one installed on your computer. All in all it is a great little lightweight camcorder with a big heart! And for the price, you won’t beat it’s use and value!

I bought the flip two weeks ago, and today after i unplugged it from the computer, I watched a video i had made on the flip when it suddenly shut off….and now it won’t turn back on. i tried everything and i don’t know if there is a reset button? But while i had it I was uploading all kinds of stuff on youtube. even though it lasted two weeks? i am going to buy another one so now im up to 300 dollars, if the nexy one breaks im going to be ashamed at myself. I bought this product from Amazon and immediately took it to Disneyland and dropped it out of my diaper bag. The lens cracked and I had only had it for about 2 days. I contacted Amazon to try and find out how to repair it and they had me contact the company. The company informed me that there was no way to replace the lens and kept telling me it was not under waranty because I dropped it. I again contacted Amazon and explained that I knew it was my fault, but I was just hoping I could pay to have it repaired. They were so generous as to replace the product for me. I am so impressed with their customer service and their willingness to help me with damage caused by my own negligence. I will definitely continue shopping with them and telling all my friends to do the same!

Great video, very poor audio.

The Flip recorder produces very good video. Unfortunately the audio performanace is, well, less than spectacular. Anyone beyond about 6 feet is virtually inaudible, even with your computer volume set to maximum. I really can’t recommend this product until they correct the audio performance. Based on my interactions with their helpdesk – they don’t see any problems!

The video quality is top knotch indoors and outdoors.I really like the fact that it has low light compensation without causing yellowing or orange tinge to the picture.The sound is very good, and the size of the camera is it’s biggest selling point…I’m impressed!

i purchased this item for a christmas gift for my teenaged daughter. here it is april, and we are still experiencing technical problems with this piece of junk. i have sent it back for repairs, and it is returned with more problems.

save your money, and buy something else.

*UPDATE* well, here it is may 20th, and i am still having rounds with their so-called ‘customer service’ it goes in for repairs, and comes back in worse shape than it went in. the camera crashes, now the case is loose because it has been taken apart by Pure Digital and put back together shoddily, so it won’t even hold batteries.

have contacted them yet again, they promised to send me a new camera, but it has never arrived! now they will not return any calls or contacts by email.

keep in mind-this was a CHRISTMAS gift! this has been ongoing for months on end…..

fortunately, i have kept my credit card company informed of this ongoing saga, and now all that is left to do is a charge back. i will be contacting consumer affairs in our state to report this company for their business practices.

You’ll Flip for Flip Video

Not wanting to invest big $ for a full size video camera, I was happy to see one with a 30 minute recording time, no tapes to buy, no cable to download and no camera bag to carry all the stuff that goes with a normal cam, and to top it off, I can carry it with me in my shirt pocket. Quality of video is great when plugging into a TV, 2X telephoto of limited use because of pixillation, but normal lens has remarkable clarity for such a small package. I’m always ready now to capture the unforeseen occurrences. Best “Bang for the Buck” that I can think of. The HD version must be gang-busters. Works well with my Mac.

I needed a video cam for the occasional documentation of evidence, something that was small and could be carried in a pocket or briefcase. I took a chance on this and could not have been more pleased. It is simple to use out of the box, and the detail is remarkable for the still photos captured from the video stream.

It does not have all the controls that we expect from a more pricy unit, but for most of what I needed this suited my requirements just fine.

My very first use of it was during a helicopter ride to a job site. I was partially looking for ground features, chatting with the pilot and checking the camera. When I got back to the office I was not expecting the quality of the video I was seeing on the computer monitor. For the price of the unit, it is simply amazing.

I bought the Flip because it is simple to use, can fit in a pocket, and it downloads directly/easily to your computer. Read the instruction manual once and throw it away. Its that simple. This video camera will meet 90%+ of the average users’ requirements. You won’t miss the stripped out features. My wife is a dance teacher and choreographer. She uses the Flip as a coaching tool. This was money very well spent.

I read a review from the NY Times and figured their electronics guru probably knew what he was talking about. He certainly did. The entire manual is a 5-panel card – perfect for someone like me who strives to understand technology, but just can’t seem to quite get there. It’s simple to use and download. I had a question about setting the date and time and their customer service responded to my e-mail in less than 24 hours (take note Verizon). I carry it with me everywhere and have documented lots of fun moments that otherwise would have vanished into history. The video quality is more than adequate – I might not win an Academy award, but I’m having a blast!

I purchased the Flip Ultra primarily for web video. I have been using it for the past 5 months and simply love it. It has in many ways replaced my digital video camera for most things. It is particularly good for web video (I like to post short videos of the kids). On a Mac the editing requires a couple of extra steps (I drag to raw .avi files over to my Mac and then use VisualHub to convert them to .dv for editing in iMovie HD or Final Cut Express). You can use the software that comes with the camera to edit, email and post video to YouTube, but I find the quality better when using the VisualHub approach. This is camera is great for catching those little moments that would just take to long with a standard digital video camera.

I bought the Flip for my boyfriend for Christmas after seeing an ad for it on amazon.com. He had never owned a video camera before and barely uses his digital camera, so I wasn’t sure if he was going to like it. But, he ended up loving it. He uses it all the time. It is so easy to upload the videos, too. All you do is plug the pop-out USB into your computer. After the holidays, we were able to share our videos with both of our families by just uploading them on to everyone’s computers. The quality of the video is pretty good too.

When we got the Flip, there was a black blotch on the screen. It didn’t hurt the video recording quality, but was annoying because you couldn’t view the videos on the screen completely. Amazon was very timely about sending a replacement. They did not give me any hassles and it didn’t cost me anything for the replacement. I would buy all of my electronics here!

I bought two of these, one for the wife and one for myself. The Flip video is easy to use and perfectly fine for close work but much less impressive at a distance. Therefore, if your kids have an assembly and you don’t have the front row seat, bring along your camcorder. Still the Flip video did fine for casual videos and obviously it is convenient to carry along and easy to use.

We were wildly enthusiastic about he Flip Video devices we purchased initially. The enthusiastic reviews on Amazon are in line our initial impression of the device . We were less enthusiastic when both Flip Videos failed in under 3 months time despite proper handling. The construction of the device is cheap. The Flip video basically amounts to a disposable device, but at well over 100 dollars, we will pass on any more Flip video purchases.

As Advertised but Still Not Great

This camcorder is all that is promised. It is a very cheap way to have motion capture capabilities. The picture and sound quality are good but it is almost impossible to keep the camera steady during filming. I would recommend either buying a digital camera with video capabilities or spend a little bit more and get a camcorder that has image stabilization.

Another downside is that the videos are not compatible with iMovie ’08.

I bought the black Flip Video for my husbands birthday, which he loved. It is easy to use and fits in your pocket or back. I knew this was going to be a great gift, so I bought my self the pink one and it is great. I taped the husbands birthday party and it was nice to have the freedom of just pulling it out of my pocket when I thought it would be nice to video. Forget the days of getting the V.C. out of the bag. Simple functions and easy to use as soon as you take it out of the box.

This little video camera is incredible. It is so small, an yet takes wonderful video footage. I love that it has a USB plug that allows one to download the video directly into a computer. The extra TV cables are a nice feature too. Our school system has ordered several of these cameras at a great price through Amazon.com for a special project. We plan to create video modeling/self-modeling clips for children with autism, who research indicates learn more from videos than they do from one-to-one direction with an adult. We can teach self-help skills, social skills, academic skills, vocational skills, etc. – the sky is the limit and this Flip video camera is a wonderful tool to accomplish this goal.

The flip ultra is an easy well thought out product. It takes great video and is easy to tranfer to other devices. The ultra takes great video and is great for action shots. This little camera is so easy to use. I’m not the most tech savy person in the world, so it was important to me to have a camera with only a few features. I bought one for my 13 year old son at Christmas. He really enjoyed using it. In fact, I started borrowing his, so I figured I better just get one for myself.

Here’s what I like best about it:

It’s cheap. If something happens to it…not a big deal.

It operates on AA batteries…I hate recharging batteries. Even worse, I hate having to buy rechargeable batteries because they’re usually really expensive.

It is compact and fits in my shirt pocket so I can take it virtually anywhere. This is especially nice when you go on vacation to some place like Disneyland and don’t want to lug a big camera around all day long.

It takes good videos (not great…but good).

The USB pops right out of the side so you don’t even have to worry about cables.

Dislikes:

I wish that it would zoom in a little further.

You have to hold pretty still when filming or the video shakes (maybe even worse than some cameras I’ve used).

I wish it had a PAUSE button.

I haven’t had many problems with our cameras. The only problem I have had is that I can’t hook mine up to the TV to view for some reason. When I hook it up, the camera shuts off automatically. My son’s works fine though when plugged into the TV.

Anyway, good camera and a good price…..I recommend it.

I’ve read the other reviews about the negatives of this little recorder & was hesitant, but decided to take a chance & find out for myself. I bought this for my 13 year old son, who loves it. Frankly, I like it too. And so far, no complaints, it works just fine. My sister also bought one at the same time (a month ago) & she too has no complaints, and loves it. I think sometimes the bad reviews might be the result of operator difficulties.

A+ Customer Service and Awesome Little Camcorder

This is an awesome little camcorder, just perfect for my 13-year-old to create video projects for school. The unit is quite sturdy and has a nice tripod mount on the bottom. My only concern is with the USB flip-out connector on the side…I think if it was roughly handled, it could present a problem, but so far everything has been really durable.

The only problem we had was installing the pre-loaded software from the camera onto a Dell Inspiron computer running Vista. There was no problem installing it on a system running Windows XP, but the Vista computer was fussy.

We contacted Pure Digital on-line and, true to their word, they replied within 24 hours. After requesting specific information about both the camcorder and computer (they graciously provided step-by-step instructions on how to locate both), they emailed a link with a software upgrade for the Vista system.

Now, the camcorder works great on both computers. Its compact size and truly one-touch ease-of-use makes it kid-friendly with good quality. The built-in editing software was so easy to use that my 13-year-old never had to ask me for help once!

Nice little movie maker, but . . .

Looks cool. Takes great movies, –but the software is junk. I can’t upload to pc or mac the conventional way–or the ‘flip’ way. Their upgrades don’t work either. Shah, –our IT guy at work couldn’t even make it work. I have, however, found a way to save the movies. Have to go through the back door, which has its own rewards? I think I’ll keep her–’till I get a notion to go in the front.

I bought the Flip Ultra a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to put it down. Like most parents, I have a miniDV camcorder, but I haven’t been using it to take as many movies of my kids as I should have, so I bought this to keep on me at (almost) all times. Here is what I have found so far:

Pros: It’s truly pocket sized. It starts up in seconds, and operation could not be any simpler. The video seems slightly better than the movie mode on my digital camera, and the sound is better. Because it’s cheap (I paid sixty bucks), I’m not worried about damaging it, and as long as you are somewhat aware that there is a lens, there is not much to break anyway. The software, once it’s working, is also very simple, and yes, the program outputs normal *.avi files. Indoor light makes acceptable videos. Schoolroom lighting was perfect. Outdoors, when the sun was low in the sky, I got a lot of washout (to be fair, it would have been tough for any camera).

Cons: It’s hard to make a non-shaky video. There is no Electronic Image Stabilization or anything like it, and the thing is so light that it’s tough to hold it steady. That little screen on the back is your only indicator of whether or not you are holding it steady. There is no memory card slot, just internal memory.

I had some annoying problems with the software, which is built in to the camera. The first time you plug it in, it installs onto the computer. It immediately recognized that there was an update available, so I downloaded that and installed it. The problem came when the computer wanted to update the camera – my camera was filled with video, so it said it would do it later. Fine. I removed my files, fired the program back up – and it installed the update to the camera. Then I was barraged with requests to reinstall the update – constantly – when the camera was plugged into the computer. I had to uninstall the software and reinstall from the camera. Now, it still wants to re-install the program when it gets plugged in, but it only asks once now, and I can live with that little annoyance.

So know what you are getting – your normal camcorder will take better videos, but you probably won’t have it in your pocket when something spontaneous happens.

Today is Day 11 from the day I ordered this product. Today, the status of the shipment shows that it has finally left the Hazelton, MO post office, the same place the shipment originated.

I realize I took the “free shipping” method to save a few bucks, but in no way did I expect this thing to get put on absolute bottom priority. What a joke! The distance between the originating town and the place it is to be delivered is 14 (FOURTEEN) miles!!!! And yet, it still is in transit.

With this much delay, and having been somewhere at the bottom of a stack of boxes marked for the slow boat to China, I am wondering how much damage has occurred. Guess I’ll find out soon. This was a gift.

Needless to say, if Amazon’s “free shipping” means this level of quality, it won’t mean anything. Meaning, if another company offers the same product for the same price or lower, and I have to pay for shipping, I might as well since this “free shipping” can not be trusted. Get it together Amazon. Don’t make your “free shipping” look like a great deal when you’re sticking your customers with unreasonable delays.

This product is absolutely amazing. From it’s incredible ease of use to the simple but elegant software for editing and storing you can become an expert in ten minutes or less! I have four grandkids and as anyone with kids, pets or grandkids knows, those video moments come up suddenly and in every kind of light. What a pleasure, it’s in your pocket or bag, come the moment whip it out, press on and 2 seconds later shoot, any light condition. Believe me simple is better, much better.

I was SO excited about getting this camera. It’s just the right size to bring with you anywhere. It literally only has 2 buttons – on/of and the one you push to start and stop recording. This camera is so easy to use! Even my mom, who usually gives up on technology figured it out and loves it. It’s great to be able to hook it directly to the computer, and to the television. The only problem I have even found thus far is that it doesn’t fit into my mom’s USB ports (the tower juts out just enough so it can’t get into the slot and stay put), but that is easily fixed by buying one of those cheap multi-port hubs). Overall I love this camera, and it can be used by anyone, young or old!

I received this item and have used several times already. It is perfect for the uses I intend it for, small and portable with adequate video quality. This recorder is far from a professional unit and has limitations that might discourage users from using it in some situations, but for quick documentation of daily activities it suites me just fine.

We got this for Christmas and we were able to use it instantly after opening it and inserting the batteries. It was so easy our six-year old could figure out how to record. I love the size!!! I carry it in my purse or pocket so I can use it anywhere anytime–unlike a bulky expensive videocamera. Definitely it is better to have the 60 minute capacity than the 30 minute one. It goes through double AA batteries pretty quickly so a battery charger might be a good investment. We have used this to send video emails to our family. We were able to easily connect it to our TV to instantly watch our videoclips. The software it comes with is pretty good with some basic editing options. You can add music, do vintage style, black and white, and 3 other options. I was able to transfer my videos to my Windows Movie Maker where I had more editing options.

I have enjoyed this little thing and am very happy with my purchase so far.

I received this as a gift for my husband. I opened it to try it out and fell in love! So easy to work, easy to share videos via email. I had some trouble figuring out how to download onto computer, took about an hour, but now it is simple to download videos. At $69, it is wonderful! I experimented with the picture feature. It helps if you have good lighting, so far, I love this product.

wasn’t sure about the quality, but after one video, found it to be just fine…wouldn’t have thought it was any other camera. soooo easy to use and I like the feature that when you stop it makes a new chapter, but you can turn it into one video. And, I have nero and was able to make it into a complete movie and download it to a dvd. awesome…I’m so glad I took a chance and bought this!

Serious Bang-for-the-Buck

I acquired a Flip Video Ultra last Friday during my lunch break and have been nothing but pleased with the performance so far. For awhile, I’d been looking for an inexpensive camera with which I’d start videoblogging, and to use for other applications (bicycle fit analysis, and other boring stuff that would make you cry if you had to listen to it).

Thus far, I have nothing but accolades and only the most trivial of complaints.

The good: the size. Holy god, this thing is seriously compact, light, and unobtrusive. I’ve taken to hauling it around in the front pocket of my jeans for easy access. The lock button which prevents you from somehow starting to record the inside of your pants. Image quality is on-par with what you’d expect for the price.

The bad: no battery life indicator. (Carry spares.) That one hour goes quickly. Seriously. On the Mac it took a few jumps through hoops to get the videos working with iMovie.

All in all, though, I highly recommend the product. I’ll probably pick up one or two more of them to help with multi-angle shooting when I start doing things like interviewing people and shooting some cycling stuff.

Easy Breezy

I have an expensive hand-held video camera and although it is easy to use it is still cumbersome and if I want to e-mail videos of my twins to friends & family I have to buy some special software to make the files small enough for e-mail. So, I bought the Flip and it is EASY to use, you can grab it, turn it on, and start shooting all with one hand. Plus saving videos onto your computer for your own use or for e-mailing is a snap. The software is built right in. I am extremely happy with the Flip. And because it’s only about as big as a cell phone, when I take my twins to the park I actually stick it into my back pants pocket so that I can whip it out and start taping at any special moment.

Good device with exceptions to note – updated with solution

The device works great for 2 months now. The picture is great and works seamlessly with my Mac Leopard OS. The program comes with it works very well and the snapshot feature is a big plus.

The only exception is that this device hangs today and removal of battery doesn’t address this failure. I have submitted a ticket with the Flip support website and will update this review depending on the resolution from Flip support. It’s annoying though because I was at a wedding reception and unable to use this device.

Will update this post with root cause and resolution.

UPDATE – Flip support responded by sending me the link to download the flip point and shoot program. This program reinstalled the flip program itself and did not remove any existing video in the device. The response was quick (less than 24 hours) and it solved the “hanging” problem. It looks like a software bug that can be address by reinstallation.

This is a fun video camera! It is small (about the size of a deck of cards) so it is easy to take with me anywhere I go, unlike my old bulky video camera. The controls are straight forward and very user friendly and I like the fact that it uses AA batteries so if I’m travelling I can just pop in new batteries and I don’t have to stop to charge it. It connects easily to my PC and transferring videos is a snap. I am having lots of fun with this camera!

They are always surprised to see me pull out my little camera and always so thrilled with the quality of their videos!

I recently lost my camera and thought I was upgrading by ordering an Aiptek HD camera, but about $35 more. What a disappointment. It is hard to use and the quality isn’t as good. It is going back in the mail first thing Monday am.

I am ordering another Flip camera, orange. Can’t wait to get back to work again.

My Review of the Flip Ultra.

I received the Flip Ultra a few days ago, I have to say its a great piece of technology. It is by no means a replacement for the professional user, but it is perfect for one looking to get their feet wet with basic video productions common for online outputs. Some basic thing I plan to do with the flip ultra is to make basic short films and upload them to online sites.

The packaging of the flip ultra was great, It reminded me of apples method of packaging. Its design is minimalistic and effective. There is an on button, a recording button, play button and delete button as well as 4 directional buttons. The recording quality is right where I need it. It runs on AA batteries which is great if you are inn a pinch on batteries, this is an improvement over the lithium ion batteries in the mino and minoHD. Editing is easy and recording time of 60 minutes is plenty to make short movies. This USB design is very good for laptops, not so much for desktops where the camera overhangs outside of the case. I have heard that the flip ultra conks out after about a year of use, I hope that this does not happen with mine. Until then I am very pleased with this device. 5 stars!

I just got my pink flip ultra and it seems pretty cool. Too bad I cant get the thing to download. Im trying to figure out how this thing works but its just sitting here…not doing anything. They REALLY could have explained things better. You have to download something from windows I think and seriously..im no computer wiz so this is really a hassle. I already made a video and the quality is great. Its really simple to use…but not on the computer.

Quick & easy but disappointing

Well I don’t think anyone should be “flipping” over this video camera. Yes, the Flip Ultra powers on quickly, has an easy software installation and use and is convenient in size/functionality…but that’s it. This camera will soon disappoint even most moderate camera or computer savvy person. First off, the 640×480 resolution I think is the worst thing about this camera. This pixel ratio translates roughly into a 4×3 inch size on your computer monitor for good resolution, go smaller size on your screen and the picture is really good but how small of a image do you really want to view your video at? Go bigger than this size and the picture instantly degrades to a very poor image, i.e.: you will never view a quality video from the Flip even at a size of a standard monitor (e.g. 17 inches or bigger).

As for the TV Out viewing (via Composite video), it too is ok, reasonable at best but the image will black letter box (left & right) to fit a television. I tested this capability on my sister in law’s brand new 46 inch Toshiba plasma – it looked ok, but no where near the resolution of the 4×3 inch picture this camera is intended for. I also tested it on my home theater set up. This did not work at all because as for most folks who have an aged but properly set up system – you can only use one single video cable type if run through your receiver. In my case, I have s-video so in order to view the Flip video on my system I would need to disconnect everything – not worth my time on that. I did manage to get the cable to work on my projector, again the resolution was the same as plasma TV – nothing to rave about.

I wanted to rate this lower but the camera does what it is supposed to at it’s price point. I just wish I knew more, or if the company Pure Digital who makes the Flip was a bit more upfront about its limited resolution capability…I would of not made this purchase.

If you are a stickler for quality in general (albeit enjoy higher resolution) and/or do not want to have to watch all your videos on a computer screen at a really small size – I suggest you chub up and buy a better camcorder from a reputable company.

Oh, BTW their customer service is mediocre, prefers to handle everything via email even though there is 1-888 number, and is not quick in response.

The best use I see for the Flip is to (as Amazon has already caught on) use it for video reviews from now on. So with that, my next review will be visual. Hmmm…if that’s the case maybe Amazon can sell a cheaper camcorder even marketed just for this purpose – I’d bet they sell.

Flip Crashed My Computer

I have lots of friends and associates who have Flip video cameras and love them. I bought one two weeks ago to use on my blog. Last night, I used it for the first time. Everything worked fine and for the price, the videos came out great!

But this morning, I was working on my computer, on something completely unrelated and it crashed. I received a blue screen error and it will no longer run windows. I’ve been able to track the error down to the Flip, so all I can say is if you have a PC avoid this at all costs. As I type this, I’m on my other computer, while I pray that my laptop is fixable and that I’ll be able to get all my data back.

I’m going to have to tell all friends and blog readers to avoid this video camera at all costs.

The Flip camera made such nice video I had to buy one for my dad and both my kids want one. It is easy to use, I wouldn’t bother with the camera pouch the hard sided case is much better and allows you to put the USB cord with the camera as well as other batteries. I would have bought the recharable one but it was not available when I bought the Pink one for my wife. She loves it!

Cute, neat product. Disapointed in instructions on use. I have trouble getting it to record and sound volume is much too weak.Really feel that customer service support is lacking. Did not get strap, ordered again and got only a package that had been ripped open and an empty envelope.

I bought this camera for my sister and she loved it so much that I bought one for myself. Although her experience is wonderful, mine was not. I ended up returning the camera because it is not compatible with my computer system. I have a new 2007 laptop (an Acer pc), but for some reason the Flip Video Ultra does not work with my computer. The audio and visual were out of sync… In addition, the editing tools and the other software which came with the camera, did not install well. I had to get firmware off of the Flip Video camera website and speak with their customer service. I spent several diligent hours attempting to get the software side of the camera to work, but without success. I can say that the camera was fun and easy- but the accompanying software was a pain.

Nice quality camcorder, especially for the price. I particularly like that I can plug the FlipVideo into my TV with the cord provided and playback with ease. But I don’t understand why the FlipVideo doesn’t come with a rechargable long-lasting battery pack. I burn through AA batteries several times a week. If you buy this, definitely invest in rechargable batteries.

A very cool camcorder but software doesn’t work

The Flip Video camcorder is a very cool little toy. It shoots video excellent. However, and just sharing my own personal experience, my Macbook did not recognize the camera when I plugged it into the USB port. My Macmini G4 did recognize the camera and it even showed up on the desktop but the camera’s onboard software did not work. I downloaded the software from Flip video’s website to my Macmini and the computer froze up every time I tried to install the software (it stalled out and I got what Mac users call “the spinning wheel of death”).

Consequently, I sent the camera back to Amazon…very disappointing as I really liked the camera. Flip Video could certainly improve what is already a great product by working out the bugs on the back end…the software. Also, another improvment would be the file type in which the camera saves the video files…mpeg4 files would be great as Mac users use Quicktime and Imovie. Just as soon as those improvments are made I will gladly purchase another Flip camera

I am a Geek. My wife is not. I wanted a SIMPLE camera for her to use that was easily portable so we bought the Ultra (F260B).

The good:The camera works great. Video Quality is better than expected and the ease of use factor is fabulous.

The Bad: The Help Desk people at Flip are not well trained or knowledgeable and the SW is a work in progress. It will NOT run on my PC at all and the support line at Flip indicated they are having major issues with it. The lady I spoke to had no clue except to ask me to do a firmware update that I already did (and had told her so, but I played along and did it again). Her next diagnosis was to ask me to read the Requirements page for the Ultra and to make certain I met them. I indicated I did, but that I was not running a Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz processor, but rather an AMD Athlon that was 2.2Ghz. She said that was the issue. I asked if she was saying that the Camera is incompatible with ALL non-Pentium Processors and she asked me to hold. She came back and said no, but that she had no idea and that the SW was pretty buggy.

Footnote: I have another video editing SW, but it is hard for my wife to use. I have ULEAD Video Editor 8.0. It works perfectly. Simply go to the DCIM folder and copy the video files to the HD and use ULEAD to edit and burn DVD’s. So I will keep the camera for its ease of use in recording videos and hope that their SW catches up soon. So much for total ease of use.

Handy Little Camera

I bought this for my daughter to take videos of her new son. It’s easy to use and does a good job. She has been very happy with it. It’s so small that she carries it in her purse and grabs it whenever he’s being especially cute (which is all the time). She has had a little trouble figuring out how to download the video to her computer, then email it. Not sure those instructions are obvious to someone who is just a basic computer user. Once she has that down though, videos will be flying around the country to family members!

I fortunately won this item. If I had paid for it, I’d be fuming right now!!! I’ve only had this thing for 5 months and have never dropped it or had anything bad happen to it so far.

All of a sudden about two weeks ago it started asking for the date setup like it was brand new, it also started sucking up batteries in about 10 minutes. Playbacks stop mid video or I get a screen full of static.

I loved the simplicity of this item, it worked so well. Think of it this way, it’s 50.00 a month for three months worth of use. I’m bummed.

My girlfriend gave me the Flip as a birthday present just before we went to Puerto Rico to celebrate my birthday. I’m a total tech junkie – the more complicated and powerful, the more I like it. I was actually about to order a Sony Camcorder, you know, the super-duper kind that does 1920x1080p, but then fate intervened and the Flip came into my life. I have to say, I LOVE this little device for the following reasons:

1) Simple to use. Press the red button to record, press it again to stop. When you hook it up to a laptop, it automatically loads its video software and lets you do your thing. It has TV out, so you can plug it in to any television and instantly play video right off of it. It’s a self-contained package that really doesn’t even require an instruction manual to use.

2) Very light. I have a Canon digital camera that can do 640×480 video too, but it’s heavy and is frankly a real pain to carry around with you in your pocket. The Flip is light as a feather.

3) Stores a lot of video. An hour of video is fine for most applications in which you’re going to use this thing (when on vacation, I suggest bringing along a laptop and dumping your videos onto your hard drive at the end of the day). It’s perfect for sightseeing, taping your cat doing something funny, or taking a few minutes of video for a video diary.

4) Plenty of cool accessories. Along with the camera, I also received the tripod and water-resistant case. I haven’t used the tripod yet, but the water-resistant case was amazing because it allowed me to film fish underwater while I was snorkeling. This is something I’d never be able to do with a $1400 camcorder, because I’d surely have to buy some expensive waterproof housing to go along with it.

5) Inexpensive. Sure, this costs over $100, but these days that’s less than most cell phones. If I lost or dropped the Flip I’d be peeved, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world. But if I lost or dropped a $1400 camcorder? I’d probably start crying. Since the Flip is so inexpensive, you don’t really have to keep tabs on it like one of your children.

Those are the pros. Here are the cons:

1) Only does 640×480. If you want higher-resolution video than this, go elsewhere. I don’t have a problem with this because I’m only using it for quick, fun videos, which is the intent of the device anyways.

2) Only has digital zoom. You can zoom in on stuff, but it’s doesn’t do a “real” zoom – it only blows up the existing image and makes it look fuzzy. This is identical to the zoom function on most cell phone cameras, so it’s nothing new. My assumption as to why the Flip doesn’t have real zoom is because it would really jack up the price (you’d need more lenses, more moving parts for a zoom mechanism, it’d probably put more drain on the batteries, etc.) This doesn’t really bother me, but don’t expect to be able to do useful zooming.

3) Takes AA batteries, and drains them quickly. I suggest using rechargeables, since a good day of filming (i.e., filming 45 mins. to an hour of video over the course of a day) will use up an entire set of AA’s. This is easily manageable (just always have some backup AA’s), but it’s something you should be aware of.

Overall, I’m INCREDIBLY impressed with this product. It’s basically the iPod of camcorders. When you have one of these, you’ll want to videotape everything to the point you’ll start annoying friends and family. You’ll also unlock the wonder of having your own YouTube page. I highly recommend it!

But beyond the hardware, the software is great! Granted I have only had the Flip Ultra for a day, but I had a chance to play with the software that comes preloaded on the camera. The ability to take stills out of the video is very practical. I don’t imagine I will carry my digital camera with me when I go out with friends, instead I will take this. And I will record a 5 second clip and pull a still from that. Presto! I have a picture. The other thing that amazed me about the software was the ability to make a movie. Somehow the software knows just what to do. You can pick any number of clips you have on your camera, pick a song from your iTunes (or anything else), and the software will coordinate the movement of the video with the music. SPECTACULAR! Granted, some videos are better than others. And your video needs to be interesting to make it really work.

This is my 2nd FLIP & just love the camera. This I bought specifically to keep in my new underwater case made specifically for The FLIP. I replaced the case and that one also leaked. However, the camera dried out after 2 days and I actually was able to get my videos off the camera. After notifying [...] they graciously gave an RMA # for both the camera & the case even though neither was purchased directly with them. Great videos, great company, just might want to stay away from the underwater case (they were great movies too though).

Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black) I love my flip video. I am a grandmother of 2 and I keep my flip video in my purse at all times. Now I can record the most memorable things I feel my grandchildren do. My sisters up and down the East Coast also have one and we are always sharing our video moments. The rule is to keep it under a minute. This keeps us all in touch with our great nieces and nephews and keeps our family close. It also helps for the cousins to view the videos so that when we get together they all feel like they know each other. I would recommend this camera to everyone.

Received Flip Ultra 60 (white) this afternoon, opened the very well designed box, inserted batteries, connected to PC to download firmware update . How easy it was amazed my fellow workers. I work at a TV production company and must use several pro camcorders ,heavy, cumbersome and not user friendly. We had a blast viewing our Flip videos both on TV and PC and Mac computers. I am very pleased with this little marvel and glad that I did extensive research before ordering. I highly recommend installing the firmware before using the Flip. Five well deserved stars !

Its point and clip simplicity are what most people need. Battery power is excellent and the built in software pack works, not perfectly, but well enough. I was pleasantly surprised given the price that the picture and sound quality were as good as they are. With a one year old, I just don’t have the time or patience to lug around a big video camera and set it up. All I need is to throw this in a bag or my purse and I can pull it out and get it going with one hand. The software is really easy to use and I am extremely pleased it stores the videos by date. I got this and it never worked. I didn’t know it didnt work because i didn’t use it for a while after I got it and I had the original flip video that i loved so i didn’t think it would be a problem, but it doesn’t work. The picture is fine, but the sound doesn’t come out and there is just a buzzing sound. I couldn’t return it because it was past the return date so i’m stuck with a piece of plastic junk that i paid over $100 for. I’m so mad.

I am amazed at the ease of use, quality of video and convenient size of this camcorder considering its beyond-affordable price! My only gripes would be that there is no pause button and converting videos into a more compact email format is more time consuming than I would have hoped. I find that on my computer, I cannot email videos that are longer than five minutes in length. Other than that though, I would recommend this camcorder to just about anyone.

I love this thing! I have had it for quite a while now and I use it all the time. It’s so easy to use that even the kids can use it, there’s only a few buttons and the quality is really great for web-based videos.

The best part for me is the software that is loaded ON the camera. I can take this with me anywhere and as long as I have a computer with a USB port, I can upload videos directly to You Tube or make simple edits.

This is a fabulous camera for taking quick videos… it stays in my camera bag or purse for on-the-go camcording. A must have for a gadget geek!

The camera itself seemed to work fine, but the software to go with it is terrible. After spending 6 hours with customer support and 2 cameras later, it was determined that the software does not work on AMD Turion processors. I’ve seen many reviews with similar problems on different computers. If you have an intel pentium then you shouldn’t have a problem, but I wouldn’t recommend this camera if you have anything else.

After 3 exchanges, this last unit I got back from Flip finally works now. I think they updated the firmware or whatever. 10 stars for their tech support.

The only inconvenience was to look for a UPS store to ship the thing back; and, missed the chance to take it to CES 2008 to take some video.

OTOH, I highly recommend this camcorder. (when it works of course) It is small. It is pocket sized. It is easy to use. Unlike other brands, there is nothing to flip out before you can use it. The picture quality is not bad. Low light performance is pretty good. It comes with a metal tripod hole. And for trying the unit, I pointed it to my TV one time and it took a 2-hours video with the AA batteries before the batteries ran out. The software that comes with the Flip is pretty good too.

On the down side, the batteries get very hot when I let it runs for 2 hours. There is no image stabilization. So, you better have a steady hand to hold the camcorder. But this is not major. The major problem is that the battery negative lead inside the right battery compartment is flat and it is placed inside the plastic casting. Sometimes some of the rechargeable AA batteries (ones that have a flat bottom) cannot make contact to the negative lead.

Of course the Flip can’t match the performance of the Sanyo XACTI I saw in CES 2008. but for 1/10 the price of the Sanyo, the flip is a winner.

2nd one works great

First one didn’t work properly. Kept turning off or re-booting every 10-20 seconds. However, after a smooth return process with Amazon, the second one arrived in a couple of days (before I had even shipped the first back) and it works great. Easy/simple video. The software inclued on the flip auto-installed on my Dell Inspiron, then updated via the web, but the video editing doesn’t work quite right (i.e. I get an error when I try to put a title at the start of the video). Haven’t had time to mess with fixing it or trying another computer… wish it just worked on my machine out of the box.

Quick, easy, limited, imperfect

I was looking for a quick, small, light, easy-to-use video camera to take with me for samples of anything interesting I might find wherever I might go. This camera is it! I’m a former professional still photographer, and continue to carry around lots of still camera gear, so the ease, size and light weight of this camera is a big plus. It fits easily into a pocket, and you almost forget you’ve got it. The hour of video is a pretty good length, just about enough to let me record most of a traditional music performance on a recent trip to Colombia. The image resolution is decent, being VGA quality, sound pickup is reasonably good, at least for close subjects or those creating enough volume. I was able to record unamplified musicians at 15 feet with no problem, although sometimes I think the volume actually was too much. Speaking voices at 20 feet or so were about the maximum, though, and normal conversation would need to be much closer.

It uses AA batteries, which means you can almost always find fresh batteries if your own supply is used up. However, I was able to record a non-continuous hour’s worth of video during about an hour and a half period and the standard alkaline’s were still pumping out the juice. But the camera was getting hot by then! I stopped recording for several stretches of five or ten minutes just to let things cool down. It was never too hot to touch, but it was approaching unpleasant, and I was concerned about the electronics. To be safe, I replaced the batteries after an hour, so I can’t say how long they’d actually last.

Negatives:

*The first camera I bought had some nasty buzzing, popping noise in the sound, no matter what method (TV, computer, camera’s speaker) I listened with.

*While the camera connects directly to the PC or Mac, when I tried to “Safely Remove” it from my PC, I got a message that I couldn’t disconnect. The manual says the camera itself can be damaged if it doesn’t disconnect properly. Called the company, got voice mail to leave my contact info. They did get back to me within half an hour, so that’s pretty good. After confirming that I did everything right, I was told that the warning applies more to Mac users than PC users, so just pull out the USB connection. Did so, with no problems. (My newer camera sometimes disconnects, sometimes doesn’t.) Asked about the noisy sound and was told it shouldn’t be there, so return it. I did.

*The second camera I got had less noise, but it still has some buzzing and popping that can be noticed in quiet parts. As far as I’m concerned, there should be no noise, but I decided to live with it.

*The lens on the camera is fixed-focus, wide angle, which means that at normal distances your subjects look a bit far away and small. The camera comes with digital zoom, but all digital zoom is garbage as far as I’m concerned, and this is no exception, even at the very limited 2X magnification. I used it a little bit on my recent trip, but decided I’d rather have the subjects smaller than blurrier.

*There is no protection for the lens. Well, that’s a slight simplification. The camera comes with a glass cover over the lens. Nothing protects that glass, so it is subject to scratching, fingerprints, etching from fingerprints and acids, etc. After 10 days bouncing around in my pack and my pocket, it’s still OK, but I don’t have a lot of faith in it. And that lack of faith just encourages poor treatment–why not just wipe it on my sleeve if it looks dirty? What’s the point of using lens cleaners on something so obviously prone to damage anyway?

*As pointed out in other reviews, the Record button is rather finicky. Sometimes I could get it to start (or stop) recording quickly, other times, I had to push it several times before it would react. It makes for jerky starts and stops in the video.

*Occasionally I’ve had some static show up in the videos. This was most common in when I used the zoom function.

Conclusion:

Overall, I’ll be happier when the price is another $30 or so cheaper than the current $130+, which I’m sure will happen sooner than later. But if you understand and work within the limitations of what you’ve got, and don’t try to make it into a full-fledged video camera, the Flip is a decent enough piece of equipment. If price, simplicity, size, or weight are deciding factors in your decision, it’s hard to go wrong with it as long as you know what it can do. And as a little bonus, it hardly looks like a camera so you can shoot inconspicuously, too.

I’m still not sure it is as good as some of the other reviews state. So far what I like best is the sale price, audio quality, and the software to edit movies. Although it turns on easy, off is another matter. Sometimes I have to push the button numerous times to get it to shut off. Also, either on or off you have to push it quickly and short. If you hold the on/off button too long it doesn’t turn on at all. Also, with polarized sunglasses it is hard to tell if it is on or off.

Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White)

I describe the Flip video camera as a snapshot version of a camcorder. I love it and bring it with me everywhere. Fits in your pocket, is easy to use and connects to a computer with USB. Stores the video on flash memory which you can put into YouTube or import into iMovie6 or use their software on your computer. Unlike an iPod it can go on any relatively new PC or Mac. Great for the 60 seconds of a fun happening.

I bought 2 of these, one for my daughter-in-law and one for myself. I have a regular camcorder and I believe that the quality is better, but we are talking much more $$$ and hassle, wires, cables, media storage.

I think this is a fabulous classroom device. I’d love to see one in every classroom in America. Just picture kiddies at a field trip to a Zoo or historic site – teacher could snap video kids reactions. Then later incorporate into a project.

Teachers would need some training on how to pan, and I recommend a monopod or at least put camera on a table or brace yourself against a wall so video will be at its best. It really shines when you want to do a little interview. Sound is SUPER.

Flip saves .AVI format. With mac Leopard, I use camera like a hard drive and import the AVI clips into iMovie6 (not newer version) and then edit putting in transitions, etc. Then export to .dv I did not notice difference between the Flip clips and the regular camcorder clips. Maybe there is, but I could not see it.

With Windows Media version, I put clips directly into Windows version of Movie Maker (yuk, I did not stay there very long as I am definitely a Mac Addict) It played nicely on Windows too.

It has its own software that I installed but do not use. Either brace the camera when connecting or get the usb cable extender otherwise it will probably stress out the connection.

Camcorders are so cumbersome and heavy to lug around. Who needs it for just a few fast clips? And of course if you have a camcorder you never have it with you or it takes so long to set up. Camcorders are for the big production.

No, I am not working part time for Flip Digital but I wish I were So far, every friend who has seen my Flip has gone out and gotten it.

Work around for a broken lens for this camcorder

I dropped a friend’s Flip Video camcorder and it shatterd the outer front glass lens & damaged the silver ring around the lens. I emailed the company (the only way you can reach the “repair dept”) about repair. I knew it was NOT covered under warranty but I was willing to pay for the repair of the lens as the camcorder was still operable. I got an email back advising that the lense was not repairable or replaceable – which I found hard to believe as the camcorder is built out of seperate components. I purchased my friend another one and retained the dropped one. Searched the internet to see if anyone else had my problem and found others that were told the same thing- can’t be replaced or repaired. Well, I took my time & using a pair of tweezers, removed the silver outer ring & pulled out all the pieces of the broken glass. Under the broken lense there is still another smaller glass lens – so – EUREKA- the problem was solved. I shot a video & it was clear as when my friend had used it the night before it was dropped. Hope this helps some other folks.

I am now working on getting my 3rd Flip from my order. The first one had a known bug — it would film for about 15 seconds then shut off. After it was replaced by Flip customer service, the replacement stopped working altogether after about 2 weeks. They’re working with me to get a 3rd one (hopefully) but needless to say my hopes are not high and I will doubtless be selling this one if they have enough class to send me a new one. Too bad, lots of people seem to like their Flips.

My daughter won’t let me borrow so I might have to buy one also. were going to take our 8mm footage, play it on tv and record it onto the flip then burn dvd’s. on one hand the quality of the video is amazing for the size and price of the camcorder. the camcorder is easy to use and it’s easy to upload to your computer (although you have to install their 3ivx decoder in order to get the videos to play/convert them to another format) … which is a slight annoyance but nothing too major.. my problem is after uploading the videos upon careful listen you can hear a beeping that either the camera or the decoder put into the video file. the beeping occurs on all of my videos, and i’ve also heard it on other videos taken by flip ultra that i looked up on youtube and found other users that experience this as well. so it’s not a single defective unit. to most people it’s un noticeable , but to me it’s definitely there and annoying. now i’m debating if it’s enough of a problem to return it.. which is a shame because there’s no other camera for the price that i’d get instead… so i’d just be stuck without a camcorder again.

I asked this question over a month ago(using the flip customer service email) and never got a response. Here we go again:

That is: Why is it that when I send someone a video using the flip software, that a short time later, the video EXPIRES!?? What an annoying surprise that was! I made some short ‘how to set up’ videos to include with emails I send to customers, and I started getting complaints that when they clicked on the thumbnails to open the video segments they got the ‘video expired’ message.

I love this camera…and would like to keep using it and sending videos…except now that I know they are DOOMED to expire(unlike the many videos I have sent via other cameras and software)I have not used it since. Why would I want to take a video with a camera with software that will do THAT to the videos I need to send? I thought that when a person received a video that it was their decision whther to keep it or get rid of it. Seems like the Flip software makes that decision ‘for’ us…and NOWHERE in the info with the camera is there any mention of this.

So… 12 video segments i had done with the flip; sent only to have them expire…had to be redone with my sharp camcorder; resent. I was not real happy about that. neither were my customers who had to wait for me to have the time to redo what was sabotaged by Flip software.

Please explain why videos sent in emails expire? What is the reason for this…I just don’t get it. It felt like a ‘dirty trick’ when my videos started disappearing from others ability to view what I had sent to them.

I have A Flip 30 min(Ultra) and was going to buy my girlfriend a 60 minute, until I learned(the hard way)about this, what I would call a major flaw (or at least a negative irony to the ‘convenience’ this camera is sold as offering) in the overall consideration of this video camera. Too bad…because otherwise it is great(except the stop record button which works about half the time).

I notice your 800 number in the info I got with the camera is no longer valid and no new one is listed for me to call. So I am emailing again. I am hoping that I get an answer this time?

Bought Flip Video Ultra on October 30, 2007. Unit died on February 6, 2008 just a few days after the 90 day warranty expired. Connects to and is recognized by computer but simply does not transfer anything to or from computer. Very unhappy, would never buy again. Also, the original software loaded on it was obsolete when I received it, updated that, and now discover yet another emergency update is needed. Problem is emergency update also will not work. If you buy this item be sure to also buy a usb extension cable (if you do not you will have to physically hold the unit in your hand while plugged into your computer or risk having the usb arm break off the device). Also has no port for allowing use of SD cards etc to expand video capacity. Very unhappy. Buy something else.

UPDATE: June 13,2008. I was finally able to reinstall the software that comes built into this video recorder, overwriting the software that was originally on it. It now works fine. One additional warning is that you cannot just plug and unplug this recorder into your computer. You can plug it in, but when you remove it you must either shut down your computer first, or use the “Safely Remove Hardware” program on your computer. If you simply unplug it like many other plug and play items you risk damaging the internal software. When it works it does a good job.

Good product, but battery hog

I got this for my 12 year old son, who likes taking pictures and movies and he likes it very much. I have not yet showed him how to download videos onto the computer yet so I think once he gets that he will have that much more fun. My only con with this product is that they need some sort of rechargable built in battery and it does use quite a bit of power to run.

This little video recorder is fun and so easy to use. Even someone as technically handicapped as I am can use this camera. I wasn’t in the market for an item like this until I saw the price. For $60 you can’t go wrong. It is easy to download to the computer and it is so easy to use.

Not so simple

There are things I love about this little recorder… it’s small and fits easily in my purse, I like the design of its function, I love how easy it is to plug it in to my computer and download the video. The big problem is the functionality of the actual buttons that turn the video on and off. They are so simple, they try to do too much. And then they they don’t work. Sometimes you push the red button and the recorder comes right on, but it takes forever to try to STOP the recording. This often means I just have to turn all the way off to get it to stop. Other times, it’s impossible to get the recorder to cut back on. It’s really a PITA. And I’m really disappointed.

frozen after 6 months

The product is easy to use but I had trouble within the first couple of months with my desktop not recognizing the camera and therefore I could not use the software that came with it but it was still another “hard drive”. I disconnected it without first “ejecting” it using the computer promtps and from then on it was frozen and would not work at all.

In total, I had it for 7 months.

There is NO POSSIBILITY of resetting or rebooting this camera so that it would get “unforzen”. Be Careful

Ultra Flip Review

I had been thinking of getting a Flip for a while now and decided to pull the trigger. Read a lot of on line postings of folks with Mac’s that said they had issues interfacing with the Flip with a Mac.

Plugged it into my Mac, was recognized, ran the Mac software on the Flip, it fired up, told me that there was an update, did that according to instructions on screen, Flip works flawlessly with Mac. I have absolutely no issues with compatibility as some have stated.

As to the Flip itself. I am really pleased. Works flawlessly, adjusts nicely to light levels, sound and video captured is of good quality. Functions as stated and I am pleased with the results. Plan on using it to capture some video on our vacation later this week.

Nice product and I recommend it highly.

Nifty little recorder

Purchased on a whim and was pleasently surprised. I found the audio a little weak but I think there are ways to increase it.

It wasn’t until I was showing it at work that I found that the included software would not allow me to download the video to a second computer. That was disappointing, but in line with other software restrictions as I later realized.

Simple to operate, small, and reasonably good video – especially for the price.

Give it two stars because i assume if you get one in working order it is a cool, functional gadget.All i wanna say is check the product good before time runs out on a return, the first one we received had an internal scratch on the lens causing a black dot to appear in every video, took awhile to figure that one out! The second one we got after returning the first had a hairline crack on the housing of the the usb, this is where alot of the weight is placed when plugged into the pc, so we sent it back and gave up for awhile, like i said, i’m sure it is great if you get one that isn’t damaged, glad i ordered from Amazon, made a bad situation a little less aggravating.

Good camera but needs better software

Very neat and easy to use little camera. Quality of video is not too great but ok to post online for fun.

The software however is buggy. Tried on several computers with different hw but almost always the program hangs when creating a movie of multiple clips. I simply save the separate clips and merge with freeware instead but pretty annoying. If they sort that out I’d give it the last star as well.

Flip “Flopped”

I like the Flip and it works well for short videos. It has useful attachments you can purchase for use under water or another that mounts to a bikes handlebars which is fun and it actually shoots well it must have stabilization software for this?

If you have a 2ghz computer processor make sure you do not click on the window that appears asking to upgrade the Flip software. Once you click the upgrade it requires a 4ghz computer chip for use and the Flip software will not workif you do not have the faster computer chip.

If you watch out for the software trap and use the original loaded software you will love the simpicity of the device. Lastly, it is best for short videos five or 10 minutes. It also slickly uploads to the computer using a USB port – overall a good product and a lot of fun.

Flip Video Ultra Series camcorder (30 min)

I have been using this camcorder for several months now, mostly at rock concerts. The quality of video this records is average, and the sound quality is poor. I have found this camcorder is best used for filming close-up shots where there is very little background noise. The Flip camcorder is very easy to use, but the button for starting and stopping a recording is very hard to push. This leads to shaky filming when attempting to start or stop a recording.

The thing I like most about this camcorder is its size. It easily fits into a shirt or pants pocket. Another great feature is the built-in USB port for connecting directly to your computer for easy downloading (no need to connect with a cable). My MacBook has froze up several times when attempting to download clips. I assume this is a flaw in the Flip video software for Mac because my MacBook never freezes when using other programs.

In spite of the negative points I make in this review I only paid $50 for this camcorder (new, not used) and feel it is well worth this price.

This little camera is terrific. It’s handy, easy to use, takes good quality videos and is very affordable. I have a DVD camera that works very well too but this little thing is always ready to go. No recharging. No formatting discs. Push one button and you have video. Flip the USB plug and load it onto your computer. You can even edit it from there. By the way the DVD camera was five times the cost.

This camera is great for those with little ones. I am able to quickly capture first rolls, first smiles, first laughs and post them for family immediately. Dropped the camera on the floor (blame it on Mommy-brain) & it wouldn’t turn on. I was disappointed thinking I had ruined it, but took the batteries out and put them back in and it works perfectly again. This was a great purchase!

Battery Blew Up

If your thinking of buying a pure digital Flip camera look around for something else.

This is my second Flip in less than a year. The first one I bought the key pad stopped working. I was lucky to have an extended warranty.

The second camera that was replaced the other one got so hot the AA batteries blew up in it.

I called Pure Digital to see about getting it fixed. I was told they might fix it but since it was past the 90 day warranty they dought they would do anything at all, but I could still send it back if paid to do so.

I just said the heck with paying to send back and pay for insurance and save my money and go buy another camera and it wont be a flip.

If Pure Digital reads this I hope you know your product is Pure crap. If anyone reads the reviews buy something else. I see a lot of products out there for the same price and you can get mem cards another great option.

Pure Digital will never get my money and I hope no one elses as well.

The Flip is the answer!

I purchased the Flip camcoder after doing some research on it. I love it, it is simple, compact, and has no bells and whistles that other camcoders have, where the average user ends up using probably just 25% of these extra features.

I like the indoor quality of the clips, but I was disappointed with shooting closeups, from about 2 feet away. I had taken a short clip of a bee stocking up on a blooming bush, but it came out quite fuzzy.

One aspect that was disappointing for me was the “zoom” is digital, so zooming in makes the picture fuzzy. I have stopped using the zoom altogether because of that very reason, and I wish there was an optical one.

It performed beautifully as a back-up camera for news coverage, producing video that was quite acceptable for a web site or – in the case of dramatic footage – on the big screen itself. Purchased this camera for my wife at Christmas due to its affordable price and ease of use. Although the camera itself works like a charm, you do get what you pay for. The included software completely refuses to load on my wife’s Win XP computer and technical support at Flip has been completely worthless, communicating only via email (no listed support line) and simply sends the same generic system requirements email each time. The technical forums on the web are littered with people having the same issue but still no response from Flip.

If you have a computer running anything but Win XP SP2, you should be ok, otherwise prepare to own a useless video camera.

I just received the Flip Video Ultra and am quite pleased with the video even in low light it seemed to do well. The video looks quite good on your computer screen however when you email it, the quality goes down quite a bit for obvious reasons. Having said all that, there are two things that are disappointing to me.

1. The red record button is hard to push and activate. I have to push it several times to get it going. It should be a little more sensitive.

2. And the thing that bothers me the most is that there is absolutely NO lens protection! The lens is raised a bit from the body and completely flush with the surrounding bezel making it almost impossible not to scratch the lens. Everything and ANYTHING is gonna hit that lens first! Poor design on the lens. How hard could it be to have just have the lens recessed a bit from the bezel to protect it at least a little or even a small rubber lens hood. COM’ON Guys!

Ultra Video Flip Camcorder

I’m pretty bad with anything fancy including all the cellphones so I was a bit afraid to get started with this at first. But the instructions were so easy that within minutes I was already recording a video. So far I have recorded lots of videos of my family and travels (got to Bali even)and I’ve uploaded them to my computer and yesterday I even emailed 12 of them at one go to my daughter so she can find them online and doesn’t have to download them either. I still haven’t figured out how to attach the cord to hold the thing and haven’t used it with my tv either. I finally learned how to get it to record by just holding the red button until it started! The Flip website had material to download to make the whole experience easier and I did that and just haven’t had any problems. The first two batteries lasted for a month with a lot of usage too. I think my daughter would like one of these too although she is using her digital camera for video.

Decent unit, some issues

The Flip Video Ultra is a quick, easy to use, video capture device. The use of 2 AA batteries is a plus in my opinion as one can still use rechargeables, easily afford to carry a couple spares, and easily buy some new ones in a pinch and not worry about dealing with some esoteric, expensive, and proprietary lithium module. I found the video quality to be so-so. It does link right to the television which is nice, but the picture pixelates in shots involving movement. In terms of quality, the video captured by my Fuji digital pocket camera is better. The Fuji file needs to be converted for TV watching though so its not a slam-dunk choice. The particular unit I have is a bit touchy on the play-back button and one has to roll the button to the right to get the dang thing to play the video. I’m guessing this is a quirk of my unit. I purchased my Flip Ultra from Amazon when it was on sale for $49.99. Thus, I am reasonably happy with the unit. I did not give it 4 stars due to the video quality and button issue.

DON’T BE DECEIVED

It is extremely difficult and time consuming to save videos to your computer and your own e-mail or CD program. They recommend other commercial sites but if you don’t do it through them and their advertising, it’s a royal PAIN. Then, after using it for a month or so (or trying to, anyway), I was prompted to download the “upgrade.” After doing so, I was constantly being prompted to download it AGAIN whenever I plugged the camera into my computer, even though the info on the upgrade screen said the download had been successful. Customer service was literally non-existent – the people I spoke to (for over an hour, including hold time, several times) turned out to be salespeople and informed me there was no real technical support, and I did check several websites, [...] and one recommended by one of the salespeople. Finally, when I downloaded the upgrade for the fifth time and was again informed it was “successful,” two things happened: I lost ALL of the videos saved on the program (ones I hadn’t saved for e-mail or CD), and the videos from the camera that I did save for e-mail were saved but with no sound. It’s positively unbelievable to me that people are still buying this piece of crap.

I work for a cluster of radio stations where we started using Flip Video cameras to upload videos of station events, concerts, etc. After using the camera myself for a few interviews I found the ease of use and the convenient size perfect for my own personal needs. When my Flip Video Ultra arrived, I just popped in the batteries and started taking a video my grand-daughter. It was that easy! I would strongly encourage new grandparents to get one of these. What a great and easy way to capture videos of the grand kids! It’s also the perfect size to carry in a purse or bag when traveling. The only downside I see is the limited amount of time (60 minutes) that you can store in the Flip Video Camera.

I just got this as a birthday gift in anticipation of my first baby. I wanted an easy to use video camera and the Flip is the perfect solution. I’m not entering Sundance, I just want cool home movies. Installation was flawless with my MacBook running OS 10.5. No digging through manuals to find out how to do the simplest of things. The Flip is extremely intuitive and fun to use. I anticipate the Flip software will be mainly used simply for transferring video files to my computer and I will use the more powerful iMovie software to edit. The exposure balance works well. I shot some footage in a dark bowling alley and it represented the setting well without it’s own light source. I haven’t spent a lot of time with the audio, but it seems to hold it’s own. There’s no option of using alternate microphones, so if want to you’d have to have a separate audio recorder & put it in sync in edit. I like the fact that the tripod mount is universal and I can use the regular camera tripod I already own. The unit itself is surprisingly light until you put the batteries in. The bag it comes with is good for protecting the finish & lens. It’s very soft but has a lot of lint initially. I’ve been told the hard case will be delivered soon and I think it’s a good idea. I don’t know how well the Flip would withstand a decent drop. I recommend getting the USB extension cable. While the pop-out USB connector is very cool and convenient, I could see it becoming flexed from an awkward connection angle. The interface is easy. The mac simply sees the Flip as a storage device. I haven’t had to resort to instructions for the camera or the software. I’m planning on taking it to Disneyland this weekend and I’m looking forward to the Flip making our lives richer and more memorable. For $129, it can’t be beat.

Get this… A patient emailed and said she had a headache. I got my new Flip out, put it on a tripod, and shot a couple minute video showing her the acupressure point that would heal her. I added titles and popped it up on my brand-new- since-the-Flip YouTube channel – BodyAndSoulMentor. Sent her the link… Happy ending. The plus for me is that I can use this for patients over and over. And all over the world.

This was bought for me as a birthday present and I was delighted to open the box today on what looked like a well presented and easy to use product. However, it does not work! The display is stuck in the ‘set time and date’ mode and will not budge at all. Removing and reinserting the batteries makes no difference. We are returning to Amazon to get a replacement on the assumption mine was a lemon, so hopefully I’ll be able to give this more stars if I ever get a working one. I remain skeptical though, as it appears from other reviews that the technical QC on this product is dreadful. It looks like more care has been spent on the packaging than on developing a consistent product. To paraphrase what others have said: “An excellent idea, dreadfully executed”

Very Impressed with this Flip Camera

I am Very Impressed with this Flip Camera! I bought it based on the other reviews and I could not be any more pleased. The Color LCD viewer is bright and clear and the One-Click record button is very simple to use. My computer recognized the Flip right away and downloaded the necessary software to download so I could transfer the films. Each time you click on the record button you are making a single, seperate video but the software allows you to link them all together to make a smooth and seemless video.

I have also burned my first DVD from the film I took and this could not have been easier. It coached me through how to make a chapters page, colors to import, images to import, music to import, credits to create and then click to burn. Very simple and the disk played on my DVD machine. The 30 min capacity is more than adequate. The AOL Video Share option is no longer valid but the software will point you to a very friendly replacement video store and share site.

I highly recommend this product in the strongest of terms. You will not be disappointed.

Easy to use Flip Ultra

I bought this model becaus it was so cheap! One of these days I’ll get a Flip Mino HD, but for now this Flip Ultra (30 minutes) is a great little camcorder. It’s small and lightweight so I can carry it with me all the time.

It’s good in all light situations. However, when I zoom in, it’s a little blurry. So I don’t use the zoom, I just get closer if I can. Other than that, I’m happy with it.

I recently purchased the Flip ultra camcorder and have had the chance to use it a few times. It is extremely convenient, very light weight, and easy to use. It takes only a couple minutes to go from recording to viewing on the computer. In day time light the images are crisp and clear and the zoom is sufficient for general use. I just wish it had the option of memory cards and was rechargable. I bought a battery recharger just for this camcorder which was an extra expense. Overall, it is a great purchase for quick outakes of the kids which was my intention when I purchased it.

I bought this Flip Video because it is compact, almost fool proof, and takes decent video. Most recent video was of my son-in-law departing for war again. In that stressful situation I managed to think I was videoing him but didn’t at first – thus almost fool proof.

What a great Birthday or Graduation present! I had borrowed one from a friend that had the 30 minute limit and my 12 year old daughter used it for a weekend. 6 weeks later I gave her a new 60 minute version flip. Very easy to use, fun to use, audio is not great but OK. You have no idea how long 60 minutes is until you start using one of these video cameras. Love the instant replay and easy erase. My only cons are that the audio is good but not great and that the zoom is not up to par with the +$600 video cameras…but hey what can you expect for the size and cost. Every household should have one readily handy to record and view all of those funny, special moments!

I was very very skeptical on purchasing this camcorder but now that I have it I dont regret making the decision. This baby ROCKS! The picture quality is good and overall its a good performer THANK GOD I made the right purchase after careful reviews of different products costing 2 to 3 times as much. Have to admit that the size of the review screen is not the best wish they had it in 2.5 inch screen but for the price you CANT ask for more. I normally NEVER ever write a review but for this Flip Video camera I just had to let you guys know…. Great product, easy to use and small enough to take it ANYWHERE with you. Very impressed!

This is a fabulous product. It’s incredibly easy to use (especially if the software functions properly, which it didn’t with our first FlipVideoUltra purchase). You can capture short, remarkably high quality videos with the click of a button. Saving them to your hard drive is really easy, too, although figuring out how to email them is a bit more challenging and takes a few more steps. Our one big complaint is that FlipVideo’s customer service, in a word, sucks. We tried to get help when we initially had trouble loading the software and the rep was really unhelpful. After an hour, she ended up referring us to their Tech help…via email! They didn’t respond at all and it took us trying to load software from a friend’s FlipVideo to realize the fault was in our camera’s software set up–we returned it and the replacement functions perfectly. We also submitted an entirely different question to FlipVideo via their online interface…and received no response. The good news is that this camcorder is very intuitive, for the most part….but only if the software works!

This is a very good deal for the $50 price that I paid for it.

Pros:

1) Surprisingly good on batteries. I expected it to eat through batteries but a set of alkaline batteries lasted for a couple of hours.

2) Small and light weight. My last video recorder was a vhs-c unit that got heavy after awhile. This unit fits easily into a pocket. It also comes with a wrist strap.

3) Fairly simple to use.

Cons:

1) Video Quality is fair. Not great.

2) Buttons are slow to respond. Sometimes I wonder if I pushed the button hard enough and then it will finally respond.

3) Somewhat awkward holding position. This is really a nit.

4) Memory not removable. This can be a real shortfall if you want to record an afternoon full of activity without bringing your laptop along.

Notes:

1) I haven’t had any of the download problems that others have talked about. I must have a unit with updated firmware.

2) The flip out USB connector is nice but I would be careful with stress. I don’t think that the connector will hold the unit up. I use a USB extension cable with my desktop computer.

The perfect camcorder for family functions

It runs on 2 AA batteries, has a simple (James Bond villain:) type) red button to start recording that toggles to pause. The buttons on the left and right are for delete and replay and for file management.

The zoom features are good (but compromise video quality), the only point of negativity is the non-expandable memory (its 2GB / 60 minute video static and can’t be upgraded) and the fact that you cannot take photos.

It comes with a nice pouch and a good manual.

I see a lot of reviews saying that the button is “hard” to press, but please note that its more of a poka-yoke feature to prevent accidental recording or pause.

One other point is be careful when using it in harsh / industrial environments, especially manufacturing areas, i used mine in a forging industry once to video shoot the process (from a distance of 10-15 feet), but because of the heat, the CCD was damaged and now for some reason the screen does not work, but ofcourse this would happen to most camcorders,its just that this was a bit weak. No worries, got me a new one and its back to work! This is an example of quite rugged use though.

I would recommend this device with full confidence and is a great gadget to have at home for those “urgent” video shoots that one does at home or on the go. It is very simple and the quality of video is very very good. makes for an awesome gift as well.

I recieved this camera from my husband as a Christmas gift to record our baby boys first Christmas. It worked for about 4 days before it froze and then we were unable to turn it back on and of course it wouldn’t allow me to get the videos of Christmas. I sent it back to the manufacturer to see if they could retrieve the images and now it’s almost April and I still don’t have the videos. I was sent a replacement camera and this time I didn’t even get to take videos of anything before it started freezing.

I would not recommend this product if your planning on capturing moments that you want to keep forever.

This camera is extremely easy to use. I took it out of the box right before a band concert as we were leaving and was able to easily record with it no problem. Getting the pictures into the computer was also very easy. I like that this camera uses AA batteries. My daughter went overseas and her friend had a camera which uses a charger. She lost the charger so she couldn’t take anymore pictures. It is also handy if the battery is not charged, you can just throw in some AA batteries and record. I bought this camera on HSN. I need a camcorder that has a more powerful zoom so I sent it back. They said they never recieved it so I lost the camera and the money. I sent it priority mail so I have no “tracking on it” I would recommend if you want to buy it buy it from Amazon. I’ve had no problems with returns to Amazon. I bought the Samsung SC-MX20 Flash Memory from Amazon we are very happy with it! The zoom is excellent.

I bought this for my husband to take video while he’s out fishing and to capture some fun moments of our granddaughter and this camera has not disappointed. My husband is NOT tech savvy at all and he was able to open the box, pop the battery’s in, and use this camera no problem. He had a few problems figuring out how to download the video’s onto our computer, but they were very minor and easily figured out. We’ve been using this camcorder for over a month now and we’ve had no problems and nothing but great video quality!!

I am a technology integration specialist in eight schools, grades K – 12. I had heard about this camera from a colleague in another district. After reading reviews and checking the different Flip cameras that are available I chose this model because it can use rechargeable AA batteries (the new Mino had a rechargeable battery, but once it “dies” the Mino must be returned to the factory for replacement).

I opened the box the minute I received it from the UPS delivery guy and had a video created, edited and sent via e-mail to family members in less than 30 minutes (the hardest part for me was finding and opening the battery compartment.)

You won’t get the quality of audio and video that you would get with an expensive video camera, but for simple, quick, easy to make video it is a great little camera. And, if you are going to post video online or e-mail it, you don’t want large screen quality anyway.

As I’ve seen in other reviews, I would definitely purchase a USB connecting cable to attach it to the USB port. I happened to already have one and it was very handy to have with my laptop since the USB ports are not in convenient locations and are shared by my wireless mouse and other peripherals so plugging it in would have required removal of other USB devices if I hadn’t had the cable.

I love it! Cute, easy to carry along, and not expensive. I can’t wait to use it in the classroom with teachers and kids!

I decided to buy this device after first watching the test shots on Youtube. I have to say that it is everything I wanted. The only thing I do not like is that there is only one function on the camcorder and that is to shoot videos. I thought there’d be a way for me to take actual photos but there isn’t. It is so simple to use that it may feel a little complex when you first get it but it really is just as easy as it looks.

It is adorable, sleek and lightweight. It looks expensive but as you can see, costs next to nothing. It comes with a cute carrying case and all the cords needed to transport your footage to a TV or computer. I would strongly recommend this product.

I ordered the Flip camcorder when I saw that it was on sale for $50.00 — I thought to myself that I couldn’t buy a decent still camera for that price, and I could use it for both still photos and for short recordings of videos. It arrived in a few days, and I’m ecstatically happy with it.

The interface is simplicity itself – it’s so easy to use that my 10-year-old son used it at a wedding to record the antics of a 2-year-old boy. The supplied software works fine, and it works like a charm with my MacBook’s iMovie software as well. It seems very rugged and well made, thus far.

I’d be surprised if someone received a Flip that wasn’t defective.

Mines works OK but there’s something up with the time and upload features.

Sometimes after I upload the video clip and remove my Flip from the PC, I quickly look at the video in the flip and its gone?(Sometimes). I recommend that everyone buys this product at a store where they could return it if there’s a problem with it(Best Buy). Overall, it has great quality and its very small and light. It works best for V-Logging from your home/office.

My kids got the Flip camcorder for Christmas, and have used it non-stop ever since. The video and audio quality is surprisingly good, and the camcorder is rugged enough for my 5yo to use without too much nail-biting on my part. But the most amazing thing about the product is the SERVICE that is behind it. We had an issue with the camcorder losing memory (not the fault of the device – my kids dropped it several times!), and the help desk at Pure Digital stuck with us until we got the problem fixed. I was very pleased with the speed and helpfullness of the support staff, especially since the problem was completely our fault!

I’ve bought this video camera last week and i think it’s wonderful piece of technology. The recording quality is very good, the audio is ok.

I had some troubles on my Macbook pro, because at the beginning i could not hear the audio and the videos crashed quicktime.

After some careful analisys, installing the 3ivx codec provided ON the Flip video software, solved all the troubles!

I was even able to use the clips on Final Cut Studio!

That camcorder will not replace a full featured camera (expecially because there’s only 60 minutes available and there’s no slot for additional memory cards… Pure digital, take note!) but it’s ideal for short videos, tutorials and guerrilla video marketing!

On the downside, i’ve noticed some deformations when i move the camera too fast, but i suppose that it’s limited of this generation of products (i’ve seen similar troubles on my cellphone camera).

My 11 year old daughter received this for Christmas. So far she loves it. She and her sister have made numerous “commercials.” What is great is the ease of use and upload ability. High tech gets simple

My grandmother drove a giant Buick Electra 225 with no more knowledge of that automobile than the location of the key, and the use of a couple of dashboard features.

This camera is like my grandmother’s car. Digital recording technology has allowed me to own a camera that is not much bigger than a pack of cards. It has a big red button that means record and stop recording. I did not read that in an owners manual. I figured it out on my own with common sense. There is a button marked + that means “zoom in”, and one marked – that means…you guessed it!

The camera has a USB plug. Plug that into your PC to view and manipulate the contents of the camera. You will see your movies and photos. Of course you will need software to work with those movies and photos. That software is located in the camera!

Its just so simple to use, and so easy to carry around. If you want a lot of geegaws, this is not the camera for you. If like me you often miss a perfect opportunity because you didn’t bring along that big bulky video camera, or its too complex to swing into motion quickly, this video camera will solve the problem.

After trying a friends earlier model Flip I ordered a Flip Ultra. It produces good quality small videos and good audio as expected from this class of camcorder. I have recorded videos of off road motorcycle rides and have been satisfied with the results.

It seems durable too. I had it inside a padded camera bag with a Canon digital point and shoot camera which was left on top of a car and then fell off at about 35mph. The camera did not survive, but the Flip Ultra still works OK. It may have been luck that it survived. It did suffer a crack in the LCD view window which is not repairable according to the manufacturer.

Overall it seems to be a good value.

The only reason I did not give five stars is that I had to buy a USB extension cable to connect it to my desktop PC. The Flip would not plug into the recessed USB ports on the front without the extension cable.

Purchased the Flip camera. Good price, decent little ‘throw away’ camera. Decent value. That being said, expect what you pay for. With this inexpensive camera, you don’t get good quality shots, you don’t get good sound, you don;t get a decent zoom (take 3 steps closer and you pretty much duplicated its zoom capabilities). DO NOT GET IT IF YOU HAVE A MAC/APPLE. It says that its software works on both Mac and PC, but it doesn’t. The video transfers over easily, but the sound is all gabled and not usable. We have to put it on a PC, then burn them to a disc, then upload the disc to the Mac. Anyway, it’s a decent little one to leave in your backpack or purse or car, but don’t rely on it to capture important events.

Tip for Creating a DVD with Toast 9 on a Mac

An easy way to make a DVD from the movie files is to use Toast 9 on a Mac. Just select all of your movie files from the Flip video folder and drop them into the Toast 9 Make DVD window. Set the quality to best and choose a theme for the menu screen. This is a really simple way to make a DVD from the movies made by your flip. The only neg to this quick & dirty method is that you can’t advance to the next movie by the chapter forward button.

I am absolutely thrilled with this product. The videos come out in good quality, it picks up colors amazingly (I video-ed a sunset, and the video really did it justice) The sound is mono, not sterio, but it is still very good. Some people complain of crackling, or technical noise, but I have not experienced any of this.

All in all, it’s a great little camera for when you want to just shoot things that are happening quickly. If you want a professional camera, of course, this isn’t the camera for you. However if you’re going on a trip, and don’t want to bring along a $400+ video camera, this will definitely do the job, and well.

I’ve bn looking for a small camcorder that was inexpensive, easy to use (I’m a bit electronically challenged)& reliable. FOUND IT! I opened the box,put in batteries & the kids & I started playing. My daughter had a soccer tourney that wknd & while she always seemed to score from the other side of the field (yes, a little bragging)it took decent video. I found it fairly easy to download & am still learning all the things to do to delete scenes, put them together etc. But the kids have fun making music videos while waiting on dinner or being silly in the car. Hopefully the product will be around to record loads of family good times!

The Flip Ultra Camcorder

The original order for a Flip Ultra arrived the first week of December 2008. We brought it on a Christmas trip and tried downloading videos to our computer once we returned home. After several problems with computer recognition of the camera and its videos and e-mails back and forth from The Flip Tech Support, it was determined that the camcorder software had probably become corrupted.

I placed a call to Amazon.com to relay the problem and Amazon quickly issued an order to replace the defective product. The replacement camcorder arrived about 2 weeks ago and so far it has lived up to my expectations. If this camcorder continues to operate in the way it should, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting an easy-to-use, small and handy camera to capture those special moments for lasting memories.

I too took notice of and bought the Flip after reading Pogue’s review. I wanted a camera that was zero frills, small and light, and cheap. This is all that. The video quality is not superb, but it is about as good as a regular non-dv home video cam from 5 years ago. The sound is decent – which is more important in this youtube world. I use it with a Macbook, and edit with iMovie. I believe that the size and simplicity of it will allow me to carry it around and take more spontaneous video than I otherwise would.

As a video producer, I am constantly adjusting things on my camera at work. That’s why I can appreciate getting home and…not adjusting things. One button and that’s it. And my kids can use it. The video quality is comparable to a cheap-o miniDV camera…ie: good for the money. And getting the clips to a pc is very easy. I would recommend using some sort of tripod or the action mount because handheld stuff can get pretty jarring since it’s so tiny. Another downside is that in bright light, it goes into a high speed shutter mode to compensate. It’s a bit strobe-y. Some people may like it but I’m not a big fan. Otherwise, it’s great.

This camcorder is pretty great. I use this for uploading videos to You Tube and just play around with it. The only trouble I had with it was to get the built in software to work. When you buy one of these you might have to download a firmware to get the built in software.

Anyway here are the basic features. This camcorder works great outside and by it works great outside I mean it has the best quality. The camcorder is not as fancy as one of those JVC or Panasonic camcorders it’s just a very convenient camcorder. The most convenient thing about this camcorder is the flip out USB arm so you do not have to worry where your USB cable went if you are plugging it in your computer.

The quality is better on the computer than on You Tube I SHOULD SAY.

You can Upload videos to AOL, You Tube, Myspace, and other video sharing sites.

With the built in software you can make greetings cards and email them.

You can also do private email sharing using AOL Video.

The other great thing is you can add music in the background of your videos and make movie mixes.

A Must Have

The more I use this camera the harder it becomes to put it down! Its purse friendly size makes it easy to take everywhere and leaves you never having to recapture an experaince with words alone. The first real event I took it to was a baby shower and all the moms went crazy over it. They thought it would be absolutely perfect for capturing all the milestones as well as funny moments in their children’s lives because its small sizes makes it easy to tuck into a pocket and keep with you at all times which is necessary if you really are going to capture everything! The women had endless stories of things they wish they had on tape, but missed by the time they were able to run and grab their standard camera. Also it’s incredibly easy to use which is a huge plus. While this would make the perfect gift for anyone, it is especially great for anyone with children. The only down side I have found to this camera is that depending on where the usb port is on the computer I am using it is not always convenient to connect, but I feel like that is a fairly minor flaw given how wonderful this camera is in general.

As with other reviews, I think the activation button could be improved. It is hard to engage if you have long nails or don’t hit is just right. I have better luck if I bring it close to me and push it with my index finger. But, if you are trying to aim it and then turn it on, it can be difficult to get it the first time.

That being said it takes decent video, is easy to download and manipulate and you can’t beat the price.

I really like this product. It is easy to use and figure out. Installation of the sytem onto my computer took a few minutes but was easy to do.

One of the greatest advantages for me is the portability of this small and slim video recorder. Okay, so higher end recorders take better video but what good is that if you never take those recorders out of the bag? Any quality video is better then no video at all. This Flip Video is easy to carry around everday so you’ll never miss capturing that kodak moment.

I do have some issues with the quality of video when enlarged to full screen on my computer. It’s a little grainer then I’d like. I see that Sony has come out with a similiar recorder and I’m thinking I should try that one as well.

The Flip Video has great battery life and is pretty much idiot proof for recording, transferring to your computer, editing and uploading onto popular sites. It’s also easy to e-mail to friends and family as long as it is a relatively short video. Otherwise, you will need software to get around the file limitations of e-mail. Another problem I have is the transfer to dvd. It is provided at a fee by Flip Video and Flip Video only. I am still searching for a way around this since I bought the product, I should be able to store the video how I want without having the send it to Flip Video for them to process. I don’t like the idea of sending personal videos to a corporation.

I bought this camera because I wanted one that I could carry everywhere without worrying that it could get lost or stolen. The quality is lower than a regular video cam, but much better than a cellphone or photo cam. The only weak point of this cam is that the image is poor when you move as you film. Slow moves and firm grip will give you quality shots. Otherwise, it is a great camera, I recommend it. Also, I am woking on editing my vacation on Apple iMovie, and so far it is working just fine.

Good Concept, Poor Implementation

What an intriguing concept.. a handheld digital video camera for under a hundred bucks. It’s implemented well in hardware, the device, the screen, everything works perfectly. And then it’s time to get the get the vidoes OFF of the device and onto your computer.

Bad news. The software provided doesn’t work. Crashes within moments of starting. Two hours of Google searches and I manage to get it installed on another machine long enough to reformat the camcorder, and then install an older version of the device software that’s supposed to fix the problems with the latest release.

Voila! The older version installs and runs… let’s try this out: Make a movie, select all, choose a theme, create mix. Adding videos: 5%, 10%, 20%… 20%… 20%… an hour later, 20%…. Oh. The program has caused a problem and needs to end. Isn’t that a surprise.

It’s a shame really. The device meets all my modest video needs completely, but the software supporting it is junk. Completely useless. It’s going back.

This was a Christmas present for my 9 year old who kept using up the memory card on my point and shoot camera to take videos of his friends, stuffed animals, etc. Since I am all about letting his freak flag fly, I decided to give him his own camera and encourage this behavior. This camera has been great for that purpose. The lack of an SD card hasn’t mattered. Most home videos longer than 5 minutes will never get watched again in our house. The only complaint is that you can’t FF or REW within a video when reviewing it on the camera. We have used the editing software and it’s what you’d expect for the price. Exporting in MPEG-4 format is great for sharing videos that even my Mom can open from an email.

The Flip Video Camera is an inexpensive, pocket sized digital video camera. It is lightweight, very easy to use and records up to sixty minutes of footage that you can immediately review either on the camera itself or you can load it up to you computer in a few short minutes.

What I Like:

The Flip Video Camera is very easy to turn on – you just slide the power switch on the side of the camera. The camera will shut itself off after several minutes of inactivity. While filming, you have the ability to zoom in and out use the + and – keys. Once you’ve finished filming you can immediately view the footage on the camera using the play button. If you don’t like the footage you can immediately get rid of it using the delete button (you can’t accidentally delete footage because the camera asks if you are sure you want to delete the footage and you have to press the “yes” button to get rid of it). The camera holds up to sixty minutes of footage and you can easily scroll through the videos to find what you are looking for. The USB connection on the side of the camera is a bonus since you don’t have to worry about where you put the USB cable when you’re ready to upload them. It is very easy to upload videos to your PC and the picture is remarkably clear.

What I Don’t Like:

The recording button on the Flip Video Camera can be hard to turn on until you get used to it. When watching a video on the camera, there is no rewind, pause, or fast forward button. While you can edit the flip videos on your computer using the flip video program, you can only edit where the video begins and where it ends – you can’t delete any footage in the middle or otherwise edit it. However, you can edit the videos more thoroughly using other software, which is what I do. The limit of only one hour of footage may be off-putting to some.

Bottom-line:

While it has its limitations, the Flip Video Camera is inexpensive, yet gives good quality vides. Recommended for those who want an inexpensive, yet effective digital video camera.

Simple, convenient, fun

Let’s say you want to keep video memories that you can share with friends and family or watch on the TV. Let’s say that you want to be able to edit your videos easily, add a bit of background music, and make them look a little cooler without going into some huge production. Let’s also say that you want to be able to take this device with you everywhere and don’t want a huge manual to carry along with you to remember what all those buttons do. And let’s say you’re just a casual budding director and so don’t want to spend too much on your new hobby. OK, so buy the Flip, then.

It’s so easy, your Mum could operate it. Turns on at the side, hit the big red button to record, hit it again to stop. The + & – buttons slide the zoom in and out in record mode, and control the volume in playback. The side arrows sweep you through your recorded clips. The play button.. well, you can figure it out. Then there’s the pull down switch to activate the sticky-out bit to plug into your computer wotsit, and that’s it.

The first time you connect your Flip to your computer, it will upload software to edit your clips. Editing is easy on the Muvee software, allowing you to choose your clips, cut out the bad bits, join them together and add your own background music. There’s a choice on styles which you can use to jazz your movie up a bit if you wish, and the option to upgrade the software for a fee. Editing is also available through Windows Movie Maker, I’m led to believe, tho I haven’t tried that yet.

The Flip comes with a cable allowing you to view your videos on TV. The quality of the video when blown up to TV size is surprisingly good, I thought, and it’s again simplicity itself to set up.

Movies sent via email takes time as it compresses the file somewhat and the end effect isn’t as good as your original work, but it seems to work OK if you upload to a public site (YouTube, for example).

A downside is that you only have 60 minutes to use before you have to upload your creations to computer, which may be an issue on long vacations where you weren’t planning on bringing your laptop. But you can (they say) get your videos burned onto DVD at certain retailers (CVS pharmacies, for example) and I’m sure there’s a website out there somewhere explaining how you can save your Flip films onto other handheld devices, if it’s particularly important to you.

If you want something that’s no hassle, that you can slip into your pocket and whip out when the mood strikes you, that produces clips that can look pretty damn good with minimal editing and can be sent to all your mates in minutes, you should get this.

I bought this on a whim before a fishing trip with 2 buddies. It turned out to be so much fun making fishing documentaries- almost like Curt Gowdy and the old American Sportsman tv show. My videos were completely amateur but great fun and great quality of video. Now my Flip goes everywhere with me and I love using it.

An Amazing Little Camcorder

This camcorder is just great. For $80, you get amazing digital video quality and in a small convenient package. Uploading vids to the computer is incredibly easy. The camera itself feels very durable. Battery life is astounding. I also ordered a cheap $5 mini tripod, which works great and holds this camera perfectly.

While this camera does have a few minor annoyances (no FF or RW on the camera’s vid playback, an annoying red light that starts up whenever recording), this camera packs an amazing punch (all for under $80 at your local walmart). You won’t be disapointed with this purchase.

I bought this little video camera after I saw another person using it. I went and bought it right away! the size of the camera make it so you can take it anywhere. the camera fits into the back pocket of your jeans! I keep the camera in my car and use it all the time. I show horses and if someone wants me to see a horse for them, I just pull out the camera and start videoing! I wish the zoom feature was a little better but it is doable. the screen is small, so viewing the video on your computer always seems better. the easy of getting the video on the computer couldn’t be any easier and I am computer challenged!! A nice fun camera for the price!

My first thought after the initial inspection was how well made this little gem was constructed.It was small but substantial at the same time.

With “The Flip” I’ll now be able to record some of my dogs antics as they happen…like leaving it running when I leave a room so that I can finally find which one (dogs) has been relieving himself on my chair leg. Anyway, beside the affordability of it, the “Flip” is super simple to operate. The mastery of two buttons are all that is needed to get you going. Even I could do that. So all things considered, I am very pleased with this product. I truly am glad I bought it.

We bought this to take to Walt Disney World with us. It was great to carry around and the video turned out great. We did have problems putting it on a DVD. I tried to work with customer service but you cannot talk to anyone in person. We used it 5 days. About a week after coming home I was going to use it and when you turned it on it would not shut off and you could not take any videos. After numerous attempts to work with the company, I wanted to return it since it was within 30 days they would not even answer my emails. Thank goodness I bought this through Amazon. I was able to return it through them.

Fabulous with a Mac

I bought this vidcam with a great deal of apprehension because I’m a Mac user. However, as I’m about to travel and needed something light and uncamera looking, I thought I’d try the Flip cam. It came, turned on, shot vid easily. Then, the acid test. Plugged the Flip into the Mac, software was installed, no problem. Smooth sailing. Video and sound using VLC and QuickTime. In fact, QT plays the vids better than VLC. The only thing I don’t care for is the average quality facial detail on vids. The manufacturers could fine tune the camera’s ability to capture detail, and that would make it superb. It would be nice to have a user-changeable rechargeable battery–in addition to the regular ones.

As you may have already read, the Flip is very compact and simple to use. It produces a nice picture as long as you don’t use the digital zoom (which is a useless feature unless you don’t mind completely blurry images). You can plug it right into the TV and playback immediately, or just watch it on the Flip’s monitor.

The program that comes built into the Flip is equally straight-forward. The Flip is also fairly rugged, as I have dropped it on more than one occasion with no ill effects.

As short on features as it is, this is probably not the tool for serious filmers, but for the rest of us, it’s all we really want.

Don’t even hesitate. If you’ve ever been dissatisfied with a video camera – if family and friends complain and avert faces when the camera comes out to record parties, weddings, etc. – then go with the little stealth model. The video is of surprising good quality, especially in low light conditions, and nobody will notice or care that’s you’re shooting, because the Flip is less obtrusive than a cell phone.

Control buttons are simple and intuitive: start/stop recording, zoom in/out, forward & back to select recorded videos, play video/stop play, trash can to delete, volume up & down. Connectors include tripod mount, RCA output cable for TV hookup, USB connector plugs directly into your PC. SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED on the videocamera! Unexpected surprises: red “recording” light comes on beside lens & mic. Two AA batteries (included) eliminate the need to recharge batteries between uses. 2GB memory holds 60 min of recorded video – plenty for a weekend outing or maybe even vacation.

SOFTWARE

The video editing & uploading software is installed on the camera. This cool feature allowed my friend to download videos onto her Mac before I left the party! It was super simple. At home I edited the video and published it on MySpace! Editing options are quite basic but very functional: cut, add styles such as black & white, sepia, kaliedoscope, add flip background music with/without original audio, combine video clips into a movie. The software automatically fades the video & audio between clips (nice feature). There’s a software update avaiable online, now MySpace compatible. If Amazon doesn’t delete my video link below you can see my first attempt. The guys in the dark room were barely visible (absolutely no light except for the video game). Not the camera’s fault. Oh, and you can also capture still snapshots from video.

CONS

The movie-making software takes video clips in the order they’re saved and won’t let you change the order (hence a 4-star rating instead of 5). You’d think that would be a drag & drop feature, but no. So in order to get my video clips in the correct order I had to rename and resave them in the desired order. Argh! I don’t think you can voice over the video, and the music-over-audio option offers one track (I didn’t choose that option for my video). It’s nice & mellow but not ideal for every video.

Despite a few quirks I would recommend this little camera to anyone looking to shoot fun videos for quick sharing.

I use this for pictures of the grandkids playing, and they can’t get enough of seeing themselves…guess they take after their Grandmother. Only problem I had was self-inflicted. You can’t turn the camera sideways, because that’s the way the pictures come out….and I couldn’t find any way to rotate them in the software. Really useful gadget.

Don’t buy if you want to playback on TV

I bought with the idea of showing the videos on my TV. Little did I know how wrong I was.

As most are probably aware, you can use the connector cable for a composite video connection. This usage is limited to the 30 minutes of video currently stored on the Flip.

If you want to look at something you shot last week, all I can say is good luck. Flip uses an unusual avi codec that only your computer will be able to decipher (after installation of the codec).

So if you were thinking of connecting a usb drive full of videos to your TV, it won’t work. Same for an SD card. Your TV will not recognize the codec. Neither will a Playstation 3.

Supposedly, you can use Windows Media Encoder to convert the files, but I haven’t found a setting yet that works or googled up any advice on how to do it. Either the sound won’t play or I get a corrupted file message.

Flip support will not help, I tried. Regardless, you’re looking at 20 minutes of processing to convert a 3-1/2 minute video. Try that on folder full of videos and you’ll say no thanks.

My 12 year old daughter wanted photo camera, so we went to Sear and the sales person told us that this camera took pictures and videos but they didn’t have it anymore so we got it at Amazon.com. After 3 days she decided to send it back. IT is a nice little camera but it doesn’t really take pictures as we were told. As a matter of fact, if you click fast, you could take a still video but as a photo but the quality is not good at all and you can’t zoom very much. All depends on what you want the camera for. It reminds me of the phone, that you can take pictures but the quality of course is not the same one as the 10 pix camera. It is nice to have for a casual video here and there. Fun for the family and for kids!

Flip Ultra 30 Min. White Camcorder

I was looking for an inexpensive camcorder to take ATV and dirt bike riding video with. Something that I wouldn’t be too concerned if it got totaled in a crash. This unit was a good deal at $70 but Amazon sent me a $10 off coupon and that sealed the deal. It takes sharp, clear video as long as the camera is relatively steady. Colors are sharp and true. The camera shape and light weight are not the best for a solid hand hold. Mounted solidly on a bike, there is quite a bit of bouncing around. It needs to be helmet mounted to steady it down but I haven’t got that figured out yet. Pure Digital Technologies Customer Service confirmed that the camera does have a build in stabilizer but it isn’t enough to overcome the bouncing of a vehicle on a rough trail. Pure Digital Customer Service response to emails is excellent. Expect a response in a couple of hours. They will stick with you until your problem is solved. I’m not sure I would purchase the new 60 minute model at $150 but I can recommend this unit for an inexpensive, easy to carry, knock around camcorder.

The flip works as it should and is very convenient to carry. The software supplied is simple to install and easy to use. It is also very easy to upload your videos to YouTube. I initially bought this to replace our compact tape camcorder; however, this is no longer our intention. The videos are clear when small; however, when stretched to a larger size – even the size of the monitor – they become fuzzy. I couldn’t even imagine watching them on our HDTV. Overall, this will be a great kid camcorder, and for a handy alternative to our mobile phone, just don’t expect more than that.

A Disaster–andTech Service is No Help

I bought the Flip Ultra 60 so I could make fast, easy-to-share videos. It started right up and saved to my computer. Within 15 minutes I discovered that there was a serious problem: I couldn’t email videos or send greeting cards because files would not compress. The same ‘preparation error’ message came up every time. When I called 24/7 telephone Help, they gave canned answers that didn’t work. They told me to contact Tech Service–separately–you have to email 7am-7pm pst, and wait for a reply in 4 hours (their estimate). Since I tried the camera at night, I had to wait 14 hours before I got an answer–with a series of suggestions. I did what they said, and still got the same error. When I followed up (with smaller files, as suggested) they SHOUTED the same suggestions. They had not even read my reply. I am really disappointed. Help? Tech service? I don’t THINK so. The Flip goes back…

Recent review of Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder by David Pogue in the NYTimes convinced me to overcome years of hesitation and invest in this compact, simple and utilitarian camcorder. Upon its arrival I let my grandchildren goof with it for the first 15 minutes,they were using it in 5 minutes. It didn’t take me(age 72)much longer to get the hang of it.

The first real trial was a week later at a large party in a dimly lit hall where auxiliary lighting was not permitted. The Flip performed admirably and used every lumen of available light to capture several short videos from which I was able to strip individual frames on my computer and distribute them as jpegs.

The sound pickup is reasonably good and the 2x zoom works well.

Another plus is that it fits into my very small camera bag along with my digital still camera.

I’d call this unit an operational example of the KISS principle.

Cute overpriced toy, but nothing more – Here’s a NO-BRAINER alternative

A friend gave me her Flip to try out for a few days, and I was not impressed. Rather than give it a full review as others have, I’ve written only written a semi-review, with much of it explaining why a point-and-shoot camera is a MUCH better choice.

THE FLIP vs A POINT-AND-SHOOT — NO BRAINER

Before considering this toy, keep in mind that you can get a real point-and-shoot camera for about the same price or less — even from reputable companies like Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc. And they all do 640×480 videos at 30 frames per second. Furthermore, they are limited only by the amount of free memory available, which you can add on-the-fly by simply swapping memory cards. You can’t do that with the Flip. Some will even have 3-5x OPTICAL zooming that you can use while recording (like my $59 Samsung S85, fifty-nine dollars). Plus you get high quality autofocusing glass lenses. The Flip is fixed focus, much like that in a disposable camera. And digital zoom is a joke. it’s basically cropping the video’s edges and then magnifying what’s left to fill the screen. The quality is horrible and noise is amplified.

Don’t underestimate the usefulness of zooming. I can’t tell you how useful it is during sporting events to be able to zoom 5x. Many cameras also have video macro modes to capture closeup action within inches of the subject. I’ve found this useful for nature videos, i.e. insects on flowers. The Flip can only get as close as 31″ whereas my Samsung can go up to 3″. 31″ is not good enough for capturing footage in a museum, where closeup is a must. Nor is it possible to capture regular text clearly, if necessary.

Models vary, of course, but those real cameras are generally no larger or heavier than this Flip, and they all feature a larger LCD screen (2″-2.5″ vs the Flip’s 1.5″). Most also use AA batteries so you need not be by an outlet or computer to recharge (rechargeable models generally cost more). Being point-and-shoot, they are no harder to use than the Flip. Just turn on and press a button. Most also have built in editing functions. And of course, you get a VASTLY superior still camera than what the Flip can do, i.e. more than 7 megapixels, shake reduction, multiple scene modes, face recognition, etc.

A criterion that many photographers use to critique a camera is start up time, i.e. the time it takes for the camera to power up. The Flip took 4-7 seconds whereas my $59 Samsung S85 takes about 1.5 seconds. Virtually no point-and-shoot will take more than 2.5 seconds. You can miss a lot of action in 7 seconds.

My favorite feature of point-and-shoots is that you don’t even need to plug the camera into a computer. You can simply remove the camera’s memory card and plug that directly into the computer. Many laptops and desktops have card readers built in, or you can buy one for under ten dollars. It’s all drag-and-drop from there on. And if you need to print a photo, you can just take the card to a local drug store. Or plug the camera to a compatible printer. No need to turn on the computer at all. Can the Flip do that? And no need to install drivers or bloatware.

Because most cameras use standard video formats — usually AVI or MOV — you can simply load the files off the memory card for editing in any standard program (I sometimes even use WIndows Movie Maker). Want to email it? Simply attach the video off the memory card to your email. Much easier than what is described for the Flip. No special software, drivers, folders, etc. You treat the movie just like any other file. And yes, many cameras will also allow you to simply plug them in like USB memory without installing any special software.

Some people mistakenly believe that it’s easier to upload Flip videos to sites like YouTube. This is untrue. You can simply upload your camera’s AVI file directly to YouTube without any prior conversions. YouTube will do the resizing and conversions for you. I know because I do it all the time. In fact, I’d say that it’s easier to upload camera videos because you’re just dealing with a tiny memory card, which you can plug into most computers and laptops. With the Flip, you have to find a free USB port and enough physical space to plug in the Flip. My friend finds it annoying to have to unplug her other USB devices to accommodate the Flip every time she updates her Vlog. I ended up buying her a USB 4-port extender.

Speaking of the Flip’s USB plug, it seems rather flimsy. That’s alarming considering that it’s an irreplaceable part. On a digital camera, the USB connection is accomplished through an easily-replaceable USB cable (about $2 on eBay). And again, you may never need to use the USB connection with a camera because video transfer can be accomplished via memory cards. I’ve never installed any drivers, software or used the USB cable.

To me, it seems like a no brainer to choose a real point-and-shoot camera over the Flip — especially for roughly the same price. They win hands down for features, price, ease-of-use, quality, etc. And if you need HD videos, go for the Kodak Z1285 11 meg camera, which is frequently available refurbished for $79, seventy-nine dollars. The camera is decent but the videos are amazing, true HD 720p (and you can use the 5x optical zoom while recording). In fact, some film students are actually using the camera for their class assignments instead of a much more expensive HD video camera. You can find sample videos by Googling “Kodak Z1285 videos.”

In summary, I can see absolutely no circumstance or reason for choosing this toy over a reputable point-and-shoot camera that can cost as little as $59. The cameras win or tie for every criteria imaginable: price, ease-of-use, quality, features, capacity, speed, etc. Well, the Flip probably wins for Coolness, which may be important for high schoolers. But if you’re an adult and you want to look cool, go buy yourself some clothes with the money saved.

This is the second video camera I have owned and it cost 1/4 the price of my last one. I love the price and I love how there is no memory card to deal with. Uploading to the cumputer is simple. Because the camera resembles a toy, people are less likely to act uncomfortable during recording. It’s just fun and lightweight and I don’t find myself as nervous letting my 3 and 5 year old practice taking video with it. Good stuff!

I bought the Flip Video for my husband. We didn’t want to spend a lot of money any any sort of sophisticated or “semi-professional” equipment. We just wanted something for basic family use. This camcorder is well-worth the $85 purchase price. The quality of video is sufficient for our purposes. My husband spent an hour or two downloading the softwear and orienting himself to the camcorder. It holds up to 30 min of video, which is then easily downloaded into our computer via a USB that is part of the camcorder. It is very compact- no bigger than my digital camera.

Generally, the Flip is easy to use. There has been one problem: the red button designated to start and stop recording is often unresponsive, so it takes several attempts to start or stop recording. We have never been completely unable to make it work, but it is bothersome. Some quick research on the internet indicated this is a common issue, and the button is being redesigned.

Overall, the Flip Video camcorder is a good value for the price.

I have to admit that when I first saw this, I was very leary about it. My son really wanted a video camera and we didn’t want to spend a ton, but wanted something reasonable. This little thing is impressive! Both my husband and I were amazed at the video quality as well as the audio quality. Pictures were clear (when my son wasn’t bouncing around with it!) and the audio was very clear. I would absolutely recommend this to someone who was looking for a compact video recorder.

I was very pleased with the video quality and especially the sound quality of this little camera. The solid state flash memory makes it safer to bang around a bit. (been using it for derby racing). I soon after bought the underwater case and was even more pleased by my purchase. It works great under water and actually picks up a good amount of sound too. I love it.

I bought this camera for my husband’s birthday-I always get nervous when buying electronics for people because you never know whether they will be easy to use or work well until you see it for yourself.

Straight out of the box, my husband started recording movies. We hooked it up to the TV and the picture was great! The only thing that was remotely cumbersome was the software. It comes pre-loaded with software so when he hooked up to his PC, it started the installation process and then got stuck. He went to Flip’s website and downloaded the software and it seemed to work fine after that.

I hate proprietary software for gadjets and refuse to load it onto my PC-I was able to hook the camera up and get straight to the video files so it was easy for me to use and view the vids on my PC.

Picture quality was great, in low light it does seem to pixelate or show lines, but in good lighting it is very nice.

Inexpensive, relatively good quality video, compact, easy to carry, easy to operate, easy to access and view videos on TV or on your PC. I’ll come back in 6 months and let you know if it is still functional. Right now, I’d recommend!

You do need to plug this in to your computer and download the program before you can start taking videos. It’s AWESOME, though! I am a Realtor, I carry it with me everywhere so that I can take videos of my local area. I use it for video tours of my listings, as well as taking videos of houses for out-of-town buyers. I’ve started a videoblog on my website where I post my videos of my listings and the videos I am collecting of the local area for those planning on coming to this area. WELL WORTH the price! And I like that is VERY EASY to use! Also, I learned that windows has a “movie maker” program standard–you can use this to combine or split videos. I know there is more to learn, but so far am VERY happy!

The software is horrible, you can string together your clips and make a movie of them but than can’t export said movie.

They suggest converting files and than using imovie, which I’ve tried but the files export only sound no visuals.

I bought this camera last Christmas for my 13 year old son. While he has used it himself, I have found it to be so simple that I use it way more than he ever has. Push a button to turn it on, push the red botton to record, and you are off to the races. It cannot be any easier.

At first, I tried uploading my videos directly to Photobucket (photo and video sharing site), but it was painfully slow. Now I just plug the Flip into a USB port on my PC and then upload each file to YouTube or save them to a location on the PC’s hard drive. Takes anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes on YouTube, depending on the length of the video. Super simple.

Great item for those who want to cut to the chase. I don’t think I would’ve ever tried loading anything to YouTube had it not been for how easy this camcorder is to operate. It’s so easy to share events and holidays with family and friends who aren’t near.

The other reviews are good, after reading them I knew exactly what to expect and I wasn’t disappointed. We don’t record a whole lot so the 30 minutes isn’t a big deal, and the size is very convenient. The zoom is almost useless however, and it is difficult to hold steady, especially if you walk and record at all, but those were thing I had already heard before I ordered it. Overall I’m very happy, I’ve been wanting a camcorder for a while.

I bought this as a convenient way to take film and not carry around the “big” video camera. Now I find I take it everywhere. It is super simple to use and it does exactly what I expected it would do. When they figure out how to get a stronger zoom, it will be perfect. A pretty cool little toy for the small investment! (I haven’t dropped it yet but it is so light I hope not to find out what would happen – it feels fragile) Took it to a sporting event where video cameras are illegal. I think the security people assumed it was my cell phone!

I love this camera. The moment I bought it I did a test run of just recording everything. The quality is great, and actually the price isn’t bad at all. I also love how small it is and it’s really really really easy to use.

But. The only flaws I found were that it used double A batteries. I’m a fan of the rechargeable battery so I didn’t like that. Also I wish that it had a removable memory card so you don’t have to empty out your camera every time it fills up but could just switch memory cards.

We have had this camcorder for over six months. It worked great for the purpose for which we bought it. However, it has a fatal design flaw that makes me give this otherwise wonderful little camcorder one star instead of five.

First off, if you are looking for a primary video camera for taking important videos such as family vacations or special events–this is not the camcorder. It is a great little camcorder for making videos to post to YouTube or send in an email. Just look at the many video reviews on this site. You can see the quality is okay but not great. You can get better quality videos from many digital cameras. If you do take it with you on vacation, be sure to have a back up camera.

We bought this camcorder for our kids to use. We wanted a camcorder that used solid-state memory (no tapes), was fairy durable, and not too expensive. In other words, we wanted a somewhat expendable camcorder. We looked at camcorders made specifically for kids and even bought one; they were less expensive but very low quality. The Flip fit our needs perfectly. It is durable and very simple to use. What really sold us was the Flip Video Underwater Case for 1st Generation Flip Ultra Camcorders which gave the camcorder extra protection not just from water but from dirt and drops.

It has worked great for several months. The waterproof case has offered good protection and we make the kids always keep the camcorder in it unless they are using a tripod.

We never had problems downloading the videos. It really is so easy an eight year old can do it.

The Flip is a fun camcorder and it does all the great things the 5 star reviews say it does and we were very happy with this purchase–until last week.

We connected Flip to the computer just as we have dozens of times before and downloaded the videos with no problems. We disconnected it from the computer and tried to turn it on. The Flip it came on for a second, displayed the Flip screen, and turned off. We immediately tried fresh batteries but the same thing happened. It was locked up. It is an electronic device and they all do this. This is why most electronic devices from the simplest toy to a pocket computer have a reset button or some other way of resetting the device. The Flip Ultra does not.

I looked in the manual and on the Pure Digital site for a solution to this problem. They had nothing. I did a Google search for “flip ultra does not turn on” and I found a lot of people on FixYa, Yahoo Answers, and other forums who had this same problem. However, no one had a solution. I found out that the Flip Mino has a reset button, but I could find no such button on the Ultra. So I called customer support. Pure Digital is perfectly aware of this problem and their only solution is to take out the batteries for 72 hours to allow the capacitor to completely discharge. This is the only way to reset the device.

I am unsure if this solution will work because we have not let it sit for three days without batteries. The kids were impatient and kept checking it and of course every time they put in the batteries the capacitor would charge up again. I have now hidden the camcorder and will make sure it sits for 3 or 4 days before we try again. And this will probably work, because other than being locked up, the camcorder appears to be fine. It still connects to the computer, even without batteries, because it is basically a thumb drive with a video camera attached.

One of the people who posted on the FixYa forum looking for a solution to this problem was a student who was working on a group project. They said the project was due in a day or so and they would be screwed if they couldn’t get the camcorder working. Since they would have had to wait three days before their camcorder would work, I guess they were screwed.

Thus, the Flip is a fun toy but that is it. I certainly wouldn’t pay the full retail price. It is not worth a hundred dollars, much less $135. Also be sure to buy it with a credit card that has purchase protection or get an extended warranty because the Pure Digital warranty is only for 90-days from the day of purchase. Obviously Pure Digital doesn’t have much confidence in their product lasting very long, why should you? It is inexcusable for Pure Digital to continue to sell a device that has a flaw that renders it useless for days at a time. In fact, this should be enough for them to issue a recall for this product.

I bought this camera to make videos of me talking to clients for a class. What I have found is that there is a 1-3second delay in the picture when I copy the file onto DVD. My mouth moving is not quite matched up to the audio. While for my purposes this is fine, if I were recording my kiddo’s recital or play I’d be very unhappy. The picture does not have high quality resolution either.

The player is easily hooked up to a DVD burner or TV (for VHS making). Since the videos are saved as .mov files, you can use them with various computer applications.

I recommend rechargeable batteries as the camera does not give you much warning when the batteries are low.

Overall this is a useful device and for the money it does very well.

Easy to figure out without the instruction manual. The best part: at $60 it didn’t break the bank when baby threw it in the pool. We ordered another. Takes great little videos, plugs directly into my laptop, and upload quickly to free up the 30 minute recording space. I ordered my Flip Video Ultra from Amazon on a recommendation from my sister whom had been using the HD model for a little while now to make videos of my niece that I can’t visit due to the fact that they live in California and I am in Kentucky. My Flip arrived on May 5, 2009 and I could hardly wait to start recording my niece’s birthday video. Her birthday is May 8 and I can’t be in California because I am under a doctor’s care and cannot travel. I didn’t want to send a toy or a card…those things a 2 year old tires of quite quickly…I wanted something that she could look at over and over…a video of her Aunt Dee Dee.

So, I did some test videos of my dog and couldn’t wait to see G-dog in her first starrig role. I flipped out the USB arm and plugged it into my laptop. I sat there and sat there and nothing happened. However, being as familiar with computers as I am, I simply searched for the exe file and did the manual installation. Upon finishing the installation, I was prompted to do a mandatory firmware upgrade. Being that it was free and legit, I followed the instructions. Again, I sat there and sat there…then I was prompted to “save to desktop or run” the new Flip setup application. I saved to desktop like it told me to, closed out all other applications, and began the setup. It took forever, at the end of forever…I got a “software could not be transferred to camcorder, we are sorry for this inconvenience” and given the option to close or contact customer support. Well, contacting customer support would end up being one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had! (Just to clarify…I have worked for defense attorneys and survived 37 surgeries up to this point and I have never been more irritated than with Flip Video “customer support”)

I explained in my first email the reason I couldn’t call…don’t have a phone…very ill…the reply to my email (which is a form email) was that a representative would be in touch with me within 4 (FOUR!!!) hours. Okay, just like the cable company…but this was just the first email, so I wasn’t upset just yet…surely when they read about my situation, they would understand the situation and help me out, right? No, a resounding NO! I would like to copy and paste the correspondence between myself and “customer support” in an effort to prevent another person from 1: making the same mistake; 2: encourage Flip Video to train their personnel a little more thoroughly, but I don’t feel like it would make any difference. My niece had her birthday. Today is the 9th.

The thing that broke my heart was when I begged them to help me…I felt like there was a robot on the other end of the line. My whole family is in California for her birthday and I am here alone with no options to fix this. It seemed as if their “Customer Support Pledge” to respond within 4 hours to the customer is more of a way to keep putting the customer off than to actually service the customer. I mean, would you order a pizza from a place that guaranteed it in 2 hours or less?

Anyway, I tried every different way to install the firmware. I took the batteries out. I unistalled and reinstalled. I used two different links they provided me. I did all of these things 2 times a piece to no avail. And, when I told them that I was just going to send the product back to Amazon because it is obviously faulty…they said, in so many words, “go ahead”.

So, make your own decision. Mine? When Amazon refunds my money…please Amazon! I have already lost enough in this deal…I am going to turn right around and buy the competition’s camcorder. Then, once I am well, I am going to make my niece a video she will never forget!

If you have an older version and do any offline backup — think twice before upgrading to Flipshare software!

I’ve had my Flip Ultra since late 2007, and been quite happy with its performance since. Sure, it’s not HD, and maybe the optical lens isn’t the greatest, but for the price, ease of use, and portability, I’ve been quite satisfied with it … until now. Recently I was prompted to upgrade the internal Flip software with the new Flipshare software, enticed by the supposedly faster transfer rate and better management of files. Little did I know that it would totally mess up my entire video folder structure in Windows, and ruin my backup strategy. I actually have a pretty fast computer so the software installed properly (unlike many complaints of those who had software installation problems with less-than-modern hardware). However, all the originally saved videos had both their location (folders) and names changed, from the previously used Mmm-DD-YYYY – VIDnnnn.avi format, to the useless VIDnnnn.avi format, and from previously setup individual folders to a single FlipShare DataVideos folder; yes the date stamp is still there, but the file name no longer had the date information, which was important due to my backup strategy. I had been using Amazon S3 as an online backup of video files (a very cheap and reliable offsite backup method) and by renaming all the files, the new Flip software basically rendered it impossible to continue with my backup method, since there’s no way for my backup software to reconcile the old files which I’d already backed up (hundreds) with the exact same, but now renamed, files. I could delete all the backup files and start all over, but that’s 6 GB of videos I have to re-backup, and S3 charges by transfer amount and storage space. In truth, the transfer rate is pretty cheap but the hassle of handling the new file name format, and the prospect of having to re-upload many gigs of data, is extremely unpleasant.

Several websites have addressed the software installation problem (http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r21983253-Help-Flip-problem-solved-Software-crash-on-install-why) and the backup problem (http://technologizer.com/2009/01/19/secrets-of-managing-your-flip-video-collection/) but of course I hadn’t seen these until after the fact. So for anyone who has the old Flip software and does any sort of file or backup management, I’d highly recommend you consider the impact. Also, Flip did not warn me that the file management system would be totally reorganized, which would certainly have kept me from upgrading; I’m so angry that I plan never to buy another Flip product, which is too bad since technically it’s pretty decent (the only reason I’m giving 3 instead of 1 stars). Given what’s happened, I wouldn’t be surprised if Flip leaves even new owners stranded when they decide to “upgrade” their software again — so buyer beware!

I wanted a digital video camera to take to Las Vegas and ran across the Flip Ultra. I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. It’s the best decision I have ever made, and don’t regret it one minute. The video I took came out wonderful! Color and volume were amazing! It is light weight, easy to carry, easy to turn on or off. I just love it! I’m going to take my camera to get a DVD made of my trip and have it to watch whenever I want….. This camera is/was well worth it! I guess if I had any negatives it would be a fade button. I love it! Buy this now! :–)

This camera is good for what I use it for – simple videos to post on my blog and you tube. The software is easy to use (works great on my Mac w/ the latest OS). The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t pick up sound very well. That’s a bummer. The speaker is on the back of the camera, but should probably be on the front. Other than that I like it. It’s small and easy to operate.

I bought a flip video about 6 months ago and have tried installing the software as well as down load pictures several times both on my mac and pc computers. I have been unsuccessful for the last 3 times and have also lost the videos on the camera. I called customer support today and was only told to clear my memory for my pc computer, which is more than half empty, and to dowload a perian patch for quicktime for apple. I did this also and now get a different error. I am not a computer novice but this has been impossible to work. I will keep on trying.

It does not have a PAUSE during recording so you can keep adding flics without separations during playback,

The AVI format requires a special purchased converter.

Headache for Mac users

If you use Macs like I do, then you’re probably used to plug-and-play and just take that for granted. The Flip Video is not one of those devices that you can just plug it into the Mac and expect it to run properly. At least not the first time.

Out of the box, the Flip video works just fine in taking videos. Just install the included batteries, turn the camera on, click on the red button, and you’re recording. Simple! I thought it was great. The simplicity is, after all, what we’re looking for. There wasn’t any manual besides a quick start guide. It didn’t bother me because, with Macs, we never really use manuals.

The problems came in when I tried to get the video out of the camera. I plugged it into the USB port of my 1.6GHz PowerBook. Nothing. The camera does not even mount. I tried the other port, and same results. The ports work, I’m sure of it (I use them for external drives, cameras, etc). I looked up Flip’s site, and the clue was that it has to be a powered port.

No problem, I switched to a desktop connected to a powered USB hub. A message pops up saying that there’s not enough power to the camera. Hmm. Tried another powered hub. This time with my PowerBook again. Now the camera mounts, but the videos are unviewable. I tried installing the software that came with the camera, but a message claims that the software is not recognizable.

Getting annoyed and have already spent more time on this than I really wanted. The other reason I was annoyed was that a friend was waiting to find out how I like the camera so that she can order one for her husband’s birthday.

I also don’t really like to give up so easily, so I tried one more time. So I ejected the camera, unplugged everything, plugged it back in, and surprise! NOW it works. I have no idea what’s wrong with the camera or the software that makes this so. I’ve read some of the other reviews saying something about the camera not working until you plug it into a different computer. All of a sudden, the camera works for all the computers. I don’t believe in voodoo, and there has to be a rational explanation for this.

Now that it’s working (sort of), I can’t really decide whether or not I should return it. It doesn’t strike me as a very reliable device. I still like the idea of having a super portable video camera that will fit in a pocket or purse. And I might hang on to this for a couple weeks. But I am far from impressed by this device. It’s not so much the device itself and its video-taking capability but it’s user-friendliness in the back end, when you have to process the videos with the computer. I also tried calling the phone number on the camera’s website, but a recording comes on that states the number is no longer in service. I think that’s really pretty incompetent of the company to publish a number that no longer works.

I’m not recommending this to everyone. If you like problem-solving and think you can get lucky, then go ahead. For those who just want a plug-and-play type of gadget, stay away. It could be better, but unfortunately it’s not.

I purchased this product last month and it is a very handy Video camera to carry with you most every where you go. Easy to use and makes good pictures. I recommend it to anyone needing something light to carry around.

Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White)

Nothing but problems with this running Windows XP!

The ‘Flip Video Ultra’ has been ultra dissapointing from the beginning (i’ve had mine a few months now, but only recently took it out of the box, so it’s probably an older model). The major problems are that the ‘record’ button does not work properly, the videos are not uploading to my computer at all, and the firmware upgrade took about 3 hours, then created onscreen freezes of the ‘Flip Video’ software (on the Windows ‘Desktop’) that I couldn’t get rid of unless I shut the power off and on on my PC! When I hit ‘record’ (or to stop recording for that matter), the unit does not engage easily, or even at all. I often have to frustratingly hit the record button over and over, and even press very hard. Secondly, the videos are not uploading to my computer using the Flip Cam’s software. An onscreen box comes up that tells me that videos are being transferred, and ‘to wait’, but even after HOURS, the ‘percentage done’ bar does not move from 0%, and nothing gets uploaded! Lastly, I went to their website where I found a suggestion to download the latest firmware for this unit, and it took HOURS. Then ‘Step 3′ of the firmware download froze my computer after the download finished, and I had to hit the power switch to reset! So I am not even 100% sure that the firmware actually ‘took’! I am running ‘Kaspersky internet security 7.0′ software, and did a complete system scan for adware/spyware/viruses (of which I had none) before I attempted to update the firmware, so it can’t be my computer. My P3, 1 GHz system runs Windows XP, service pack 2, and I have had no problems whatsoever with every other program I run on it. I am VERY dissapointed with this ‘Flip’ cam, and for now, I will just let it sit in the closet and collect dust, until I have the patience to deal with this P.O.S. again, if ever. I wasted half my day attempting to get this substandard product to just work!!! Also note that as of this writing, there are 67 ’1 star’ reviews here (and 42 ’2 star reviews’)… CLEARLY there are major issues with this cam for a large percentage of their customers. That says a lot! Buyer beware.

Good camera, easy to use. A knucklehead can use this. Theres only a few buttons, one of them is red – you obviously press the big red button for to start recording!

Did have trouble with getting an error message when downloading the videos (which is also easy – you just plug the retractable arm into the USB port – I advise getting a USB extension chord to use this bit as its easier to plug in)

Something about having to validate my version of Windows, which was annoying..

You might wanna check out your Windows media player version in this instance

I believe FlipVideo has a webpage that tells you what your computer requirements are for to download the program to get your videos to the the web (this it does automatically – you plug the retractable arm into the USB port and after that its simple

(Unless you’re pestered by messages saying you need to Validate your copy of Windows.. annoying!!)

From there (after plugging in the arm and having the Flip Video on your computer screen) its easy to put videos on Youtube (or Myspace) – you just put in your id (your Youtube user id, for instance) and the password for your account, and you’re in! It downloads the videos you choose (you can choose all) and puts them automatically on your channel

So I like this bit. Again: easy to use!

But make you don’t have a problem with your laptop. Maybe try it out in the shop by bringing your laptop to the retail store, plug it in and testing it out

A tripod might be an option, but I can’t advice on that account as I haven’t used one (yet). I just notice theres a hole in the bottom of the unit you can put the tripod into

Definitely get a USB extension to plug this into because otherwise you risk damage to the arm or device by trying to fit it into the computer (on my laptop this was hard – the USB ports are on the back and I had to put several books underneath my laptop with the camcorder hanging from the arm!)

Easy to use – you just press a red button and you can start recording. There are arrow keys on the back that allow you to view your videos on the screen; deleting said videos an easy option as well (you press a trash can icon next to the huge red button)

Sound is ok, video qualitys ok. Easy to use, you can watch the videos on your tv thanks to an accompanying color cable cable if you feel like

A lot of fun actually, as its the size of a cigarette case and you can fit it in your pocket. A bag to carry it is included with the camcorder, along with 2 batteries (Duracell)

This records up to an hour of film. I believe rechargable batteries will be alright for use with this item (The Duracell batteries included in the package are just regular AA)

Easy to put the batteries in and out. I tend to take them out when I’m not using, just to be safe. VERY easy to use (I can not stress this enough)

Just make sure your computers alright – you might wanna check this out at the store briging your laptop to make sure you don’t have trouble in this regard – it can be annoying!

Thats my only trouble though. It seems to work well, easy to use (VERY easy to use) and I think this is a good product

We bought this camcorder for our daughters this Christmas. They absolutely love it. They love making their own little movies and the picture quality is really pretty good. We were able to put their movies onto disc without any problems. The batteries seem to last a good time too. Now my husband wants one for his birthday to take with him when he’s out biking trails.

I bought this camera for my husband as he was going to see his family for Christmas and I was going to be unable to make the trip because of work. It ended up that I went along and we got great footage of the whole family on Christmas day that I was then able to share with my family as well. This camera was very easy to use and we were able to upload our footage onto everyone else’s computer so that they could have a copy. The quality also looks great on my 37″ tv.

I bought this for my daughter, who will be graduating from college very soon as a teacher. She is a camera junky. She loves this video camera. She is looking forward to using it in her classroom with the kids for projects and for herself while she finishes her internship up. She also has two adorable cousins that she loves video taping. The pictures seem sharp and clear and pretty good sound also. Good product for the money!

I am giving this review from a woman’s perspective. I carry this little Flip Ultra in my purse. I have taken video that I would never have before. The one thing that I enjoy the most is that it takes so well in low lighting. I have tested it out numerous times in different settings, and it performs beautifully. It is so simple to operate and download onto my computer, and the software has been compatible with Windows XP, Vista and my iMac and Macbook computers. I will leave the technical information to others. The bottom line is that I am having a blast taking video with this little Flip Ultra – from my grandchildren’s baseball games, my pets playing, beautiful hibiscus in bloom and vacations. I especially recommend this to seniors who might have trouble carrying around a heavier camcorder. My little 6 year old grandson had no problem operating it.

I purchased my Flip Ultra from Amazon a few months back and I love it. It was meant to be a cheap camcorder used to create some wonderful video memories until my husband and I have kids and then we’ll go all out w/ a more expensive camcorder. We were pleasantly surprised w/ how easy it was to use the Flip Camcorder, the quality isn’t too bad and it’s very convenient! Just try and be steady while filming or it’ll blur. Be careful of the delete button too – We’ve accidentally deleted some videos.

Only a few months old, we were upset to find that our Flip camcorder stopped working. It would turn on to the Flip logo but it’ll freeze there. We can’t retrieve old videos nor can we record. The logo is frozen there and it won’t turn off either. We have to empty the batteries out to turn it off. I contacted Customer Support on http://www.theflip.com and they sent me an RMA #. I was disappointed w/ their service because it took almost 3 weeks before I recieved my camcorder back (they promised to have it shipped out within the week they recieved the camcorder). After 3 weeks, they sent back my Flip and said that it was fixed and the videos were restored. Upon reciept, when I turned it on, it appeared to be fixed and my videos were still on there. I was very ecstatic and sent them a glowing email of thanks. I should’ve uploaded my videos then and there because that was the last time I was able to turn the Flip back on. It returned to its previous state of frozen logo. I’m debating whether or not to contact them ago or just buy a new camcorder from another company.

Easier to use than I thought

When I first receive the Flip as a Christmas gift, I was skeptical about this thing since I am very used to the complex machines like everybody else does. But after my 3rd time use, I fell in love with this camcorder. Very very easy to use and I realized that I don’t need any other extra functions that other camcorder offers. I end up buying a few more for my old parents who doesn’t like the complex things.

i got this as recommended by a friend. very convenient and easy to use. great for home use – it has only 2x zooming and some basic functions so may not be great for person looking for many fancy features. but good enough to record some family fun activities, and really easy compare to those camcorders that require CDs. you can just record whatever you want, and then plug into your computer like a drump drive!!! that’s just great!

Pretty easy to use, no problems at all. I found that other reviewers complain a little bit about software and the like, but I found no problems whatsoever. I got my kids to use it to tape (or is there a better word?…) scenes from their daily lives. They found no problems either.

Perhaps it would be nice if one could find a way to choose the resolution of the compressed files for e-mailing or storing, that part of the software is somewhat limited, but I think that this would be a great addition.

I bought this for my parents and my girlfriend’s parents, both sides have difficulty with technology and computers. However, they both seemed easily use Flip It. Operating the camera is very easily for them and now they know how to upload to the computer with the software already installed on the camera. I am sure the picture quality and features are not up to par with many other digital camcorders, but it is a great camera for the price.

The Flip is a good resolution video cam-corder. Easy to use, very small, the 2 AA batteries last and it has a auto-shut off that saves battery, easy to connect to the pc and very easy to video editing. The connection with the TV its also very good. Includes software to save, edit and e-mail the videos. I dropped it a couple of times and still works fine (in its case though) but don’t tempt you luck. The camera is excellent in most situations, sound is great and for general videos is just amazing.

There are a couple of drawback things with this, one is the on-off switch which is not good and the other is the lens is very susceptible of scratching or getting dirt or grease from your hands.

I hope someone comes with a waterproof case to do videos inside the water, and an extension for the memory (some kind of additional flash card for more memory).

I recommend it, just for pure fun.

The Flip camera works great and is so easy to use, once I got the updated software. Loading the software the firt time did NOT work, but I wrote the company and they sent me the link to update the software and to load it, then it worked as advertise. Now it is plug and play.

Worthless Junk, Poor Customer Support

My experience with my Flip camera is nowhere near as glowing as many of the reviews posted. Unfortunately, I am also past the warrenty date, so I am stuck with this little paperweight. Buyer beware.

I took a few clips of my Grandaughter and decided to put them on my computer. The camera-imbedded interface came up the first time and then imediately froze up. An instructional pop-up informing of a firmware update appeared, and when the update completed, the “flip” editing and saving guides were gone, along with two of the three clips. The remaining clip somehow saved as a windows media player file. But the “easy to upload” to YouTube panel that was originally there from Flip, along with the Flip easy edit tools have vanished.

Emails to Flip have given me nothing I can use to fix the problem. The replys are all in tech-speak, which left me with a product that was obviously thrown on the market before the bugs were all removed. Worthless.
