I'm looking into getting a Nikon lens for my Sony NEX-3. I know that I need a adapter to do this, but was wondering if the adapter only works for specific lenses. And why would you want to do that? Adapters are often not what they're cracked up to be. They may not let the camera and lens "talk" which means no auto focus / exposure.

You'd be smart to stick with lenses made for your camera.

Thinking back on your question, I realized you were talking about manual focus camera bodies. The adapter info I listed above is for a Nikon F mount to a Canon EF mount (which is the autofocus mount for use is Canon EOS bodies). What you need is a Nikon F mount to a Canon FD mount. Such an adapter is no longer made, but you can probably find one on the used market with some difficulty.

Sorry for any confusion on my part.

I'm currently testing the Nikon FT-1 Adapter on my NikonV1, and while I'm not ready to publish a review just yet... I thought considering the dearth of decent "test footage" from the FT-1 here on youtube I found (or maybe more to the point, didn't find) when I went looking for some myself recently, I thought it might be handy to some people to upload a short montage of my Day 1 testing with the lens adapter and a Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens I had supplied with the review unit while I await some more Glass to test with it, from Sigma. FYI, the slow-motion stuff was done by running the V1 in 60P mode and conforming that 60fps footage back down to 25fps - this is sometimes known as "overcranking"... it's a nifty trick, and one of the best reasons to have a camera that does 60p You can find some stills from the shoot here; plus.google.com

I'm trying to start up a little photography business but I'm about amateur as amateur can get. I have a Nikon D3000 and I would like to buy a new lens for it. I'd like to stay under $ 1000 but I want my pictures to look great! I'm mostly focused on baby photography.

I don't suggest using a D3000 for a business. If your business gets rolling you will wear that poor little toy camera out in no time. Image quality is a little iffy too, especially at 11x14" or bigger. IMHO.

As the D3000 will only autofocus AF-S lenses you may want to look into the 50mm f/1.4 AF-S. It's considered a good portrait lens. Nice contrast and great color accuracy. I would also recommend checking 24-70 f/2.8 even though it is over your budget.

(If you decide to go with the D700 or D3 series then check the 85mm f/1.4 prime. It is superb.)
