I bought this camera as a birthday gift for my daughter who wanted a small “point and shoot” to carry to her son’s events without having to haul her big camera. She says it is truly “point and shoot” with the added bonus of making great pictures. It is so small and light weight that she just keeps it in her purse and always has it with her. I chose it because it had good reviews, is fully automatic, and has surprisingly advanced features for as inexpensive as it was. She loves it!

In this new age of HD digi cams, this one does not promise much. But if you plan to get a good deal on a gift and assured quality, Canon Powershot A1000IS is really a great buy.

I would generally recommend this product for a person who does not want a HD immediately but still wants a good camera with good picture quality and auto focus

Better cameras abound
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Previously I owned the older version of the power-shot with a movable screen and I was very satisfied with that. After it broke, (my fault), I decided to go for this camera for a last minute trip to hawaii. I have to say, I was really disappointed. The zoom is grainy and does not come out well, and no matter the ISO, glaring sunlight, and a steady hand, photos are all to apt to come out blurry. In general, I really think this is an inferior camera of it’s predecessor, and not the greatest camera overall. It might cost more to buy a better camera, but I think the upgrade in quality is worth it. Okay for the causal-point-and-shooter, but if you really want nice pictures, I would not recommend this at all.

I this a pretty good camera. I recently had a baby and wanted a camera to take pictures. I decided to spent a lil bit more for a high quality camera. the only problem I have with this product is the orange light on the front of the camera facing the subject. It comes on when you take a picture. So with the baby she stares at it and stops smiling whenever I try to take a pic. She already stares when she sees the camera but she does even more bc of the light. The pic quality is great. but that darn orange light…

Very nice camera with some drawbacks
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The camera is surprisingly good, though of course a $130 camera with 10 megapixels won’t be as sharp and clear as a $600 camera with 6 megapixels, so don’t be fooled by pixel count. The memory card that comes with it is a joke, so pick up a $10 8-GB card wen you order the camera. Two drawbacks: can’t shoot in raw mode, which limits your retouching options, and requires special software/drivers to read from the card – no pretending it’s an external USB drive. Oh, and it’s hard to delete a group of photos even WITH the software – you have to go one at a time through the camera’s interface, or delete all. When you go over 800 ISO (what we used to call ASA), the image quality is badly degraded; 400 is probably the sweet spot.

All that said, the feature range is stunning, the photo quality is sometimes amazing, and it’s a pretty darned good camera.

Very good compromise camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Our old 5mp Kodak died and we needed a replacement. Since I do a lot of hiking I needed a camera with a viewfinder (for shots in bright sunlight) while my wife just wanted something small and easy to use. The 2.5″ screen is just large enough to satisfy her needs while the viewfinder (although it only renders 78% of the picture) allows me to frame shots in the bright outdoors. Its versatile with a program mode that gives you some measure of control (not bad for a camera at this level) but has an adaquate auto mode. Picture quality is not outstanding but more than adequate. Indoor pictures can be tricky on automatic mode where it has a tendency to want to use a higher ISO than it should. Forcing an ISO of 200 or less on the Program mode helps a lot. Buttons and menu are fairly easy to get used to. At 4x it has a slightly longer zoom than many others in its class. It feels good in the hand. Consumer Reports liked it better than the 12 MP successor, the A1100. All in all its a very nice under $200 camera.

excellent take-everywhere camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent camera, one that his very easy to use and takes beautiful photos. It is also very sturdy. Amazingly, the video function is nearly the equivalent of our sony mini-dv videocam. The camera is lightweight, small enough to fit in a pocket but large enough to hold onto. The viewscreen is very bright and clear, but there is also a viewfinder for when the light is too bright. There is little or no shutter-lag, which is very important to me. And the built-in flash does a very nice job out to about 15 feet or so. The face-recognition feature works well, but seems to be most effective in closeups.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I picked this camera based on hundreds of online reviews, without ever holding it at a store, and love it. It has a fast shutter speed, is easy to use, even for talentless me, and has great features. My very favorite feature is the built in red eye removal, but I also like the Kids and Pets and Fireworks settings. I know there are better cameras out there, but not for this price, and I’m extremely happy with it.

Good low budget, first digital camera
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera for my in-laws for Christmas. They are completely non-technical, have never used a digital camera or computer, and my mother-in-law asked me twice “where does the film go”. That being said – they can understand and use this camera. It does not have a ton of features, which is good because it would only confuse them. That is not a slam to them, it’s just fact. At the same time we purchased one of the small HP portable printers for them. My father-in-law understands it enough to use it when he wants a quick print, but I explained just taking the camera or card to get multiple prints or bring to me and I’ll take care of it.

Christmas day we printed out several pictures on the printer, and they came out great – I, as well as my husband and in-laws were thoroughly surprised at the level of detail (says a lot about the camera and the printer).

HP A636 Compact Photo Printer

Shot to shot time is not particularly fast, so be patient, and don’t move the camera too fast after taking the picture. I’m used to my higher end digital cameras though, and Canon’s are known for their slower response time.

I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars. On the one hand, I think I expected the drawbacks of this camera, so with that expectation and based on the low price, and the great picture quality, it should probably be 4 stars. However given Canon’s overall reputation as a leader in digital cameras, I think I expect better and a little faster and had to settle on just 3.

Much better quality than my old camera, especially in movie mode which we use a lot with my toddler.

Only problem (which may be so with all point and shoots) is the shutter delay gives him time to move, making it hard to catch him at just the right moment.

Don’t Drop It
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It took me a LONG time to research and purchase a digital camera. I have used inexpensive 35mm for my whole life. It was uncomfortable for me to get used to this camera. I didn’t like how the viewer went black for a moment every time I took a picture. I admit I wasn’t embracing the whole digital thing, but I was willing to learn. I had already purchased a second memory card and was receiving the low battery warning when this camera fell about four feet off of our kitchen counter. The lens broke and now I am in the market for another camera. In this economy, it is tough to shell out a few hundred dollars for broken “toys”. I use cameras to document the life and growth of my kids, not to win photo competitions. If I am spending money on batteries, or chargers, memory chips and now a whole new camera, it makes my old inexpensive 35mm seem really attractive again. I can’t even comment on how the photos look. I never even got the chance to download them. Don’t drop this camera. It won’t survive.

I’m still learning how to use the many features of my new camera, but in the interim, using the auto feature has resulted in some very sharp pictures. I’ve also taken some fantastic “stop action” shots of kids swinging on swings, as well as very good closeups. I’m really looking forward to becoming a “beginner”, “expert” photographer…I feel I have the camera, finally, to do it, with more practice (and the ability to check on the pictures and eliminate the bummers).

I can vouch for the IS!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve only had the A1000 IS for a few weeks and haven’t mastered its use entirely but I can certainly vouch for the IS image stabiliaztion! Riding in a car over a ridged metal bridge that also has a railroad on it, I took photos of the road ahead and the moving train alongside as we were bumping along and: NO BLURRING WHATSOEVER! I was surprised that the images came out clear as a bell. I still have to master close-ups. They are not as easy to achieve as on the Nikon Coolpix 4600 I was using before but so far the quality of photos and colour fidelity is good. Easy to handle as well. I gave it four stars pending verification of the close-up capacity.

This is a solid camera. I got it for my grandfather who was making the transition from film to digital. I have an SD1000 which he thought was too small for him. This camera was a nice balance of function, zoom, and price. It has enough options to be useful to the more advanced user, but it doesn’t bog the camera down with stuff you will never use.

Don’t Believe the Hype
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
So I read all the reviews and looked at all the ratings on-line and figured this was the camera I needed – not too complicated, easy to use, somewhat fast pictures and would last a while. WRONG. The camera itself was easy to use, I’ll give it that. But it took forever to take a picture. Case in point, every time I went to take a picture of our Yorkie, I’d get a picture of our floor – it cannot keep up with kids and pets – and you can’t exactly ask a dog to “do that again.” I bought this camera in January 09 and when we went on our honeymoon Oct 09 it flat out stopped working. Just froze up. Thank god we had brought my husbands waterproof pentax with us or we would have no pictures from our honeymoon. We used some of our wedding money to purchase a Nikon since then. We’ve used it indoors and out and had much better luck. Save your money, buy a Nikon.

This is a very good camera with many features found on only more expensive cameras. I like haveing AA batteries BUT I am going thru them at a very rapid rate. The camera is only 3 months old and we have not taken 100 pictures yet and I am on my 3rd set of batteries. As soon as I know just how many shots I am getting on aset of batteries, I will be contacting Amazon and/or Canon to try to find out what the problem is.

Great Camera, Only One Problem
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I think this is a wonderful little camera. It is easy to use, has a great zoom, and almost all of my pictures come out in focus. It is small and lightweight, so it’s easy to carry around. I had one camera where I had to take two or three sets of rechargables around with me, because it drained the battery so quickly. But I have taken over 200 pictures and still have the same batteries in that it came with. The upload to your computer is easy. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to delete the pictures of the memory card one by one. It does not let you upload, then delete all uploaded pics off camera. Or if it does have that feature, I haven’t figured it out yet. Very time consuming to delete pics off camera one by one.

Nice camera in many ways except kiss of death “lens error”
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera a month ago as Consumer Reports gave it high marks. It takes nice pictures and the video function is camcorder quality. Unfortunately yesterday I got the dreaded “lens error restart camera” message. Basically that disables the camera. Even if there is a problem with the lens (and not clear there is) it also won’t allow me to download the pictures as it just shuts off after several seconds. Since it is under warranty I will get it repaired. Turns out this is a common problem across Canon camera lines.

I ordered a couple of these in for a friend and got to shoot one for a couple of weeks. They are very capable little shooters. If you don’t print larger than letter size you should enjoy this very much. I found it capable for quite a variety of photos, from nice close ups of new raspberries to small landscapes. Just put a big sdhc card in it and shoot a lot of pictures, then keep the ones you like.

I’m thinking of buying one for myself, maybe the A2000IS because of the bigger zoom although I don’t know that that is all that necessary.[...]

I bought this to replace a Kodak EasyShare which I had purchased about 3 years ago. We still have an Olympus that is about 10 years old! My husband likes the Canon brand so I chose this for him and so far we have loved it! He wanted something small to fit in his shirt pocket (check), something that took good photos and had automatic on it (check), and easy wide/telephoto button (check). We have been happy with our pix from this camera. I can recommend it. I just bought this camera today, right out of the box I was able to take great photo’s. Thankfully, I had a 2gig card from my older camera, so I did not have to buy a new one as the one they give you holds next to nothing in photo’s. Still great to have a card though so not picking on it. I have been wanting a small compact camera that takes great photo’s. I think I found exactly like I wanted. I got mine at Target for 30 dollars more then what Amazon sells for. Still, not a bad deal. I paid less then my first camera, and still paid less then my last fugi camera that died in the first year.

…it doesn’t include some manual controls that were included with previous versions (the reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5). Basically it has the same features as previous A series cameras, BUT it’s missing manual focus and manual aperture controls (they are automatic only). This is bound to disappoint many photography enthusiasts.

Other than that the A1000IS is an amazing little cam. The picture quality is bright and clear. It is easy to use, and it retains the same function controls as previous A series cameras. And best of all, it’s a Canon. I will never go with any other brand as long as Canon continues to make cameras.

Works good with easy features
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This item was purchased as a gift, but even so, I’ve had the opportunity to use it here and there, and it has worked well. One of the main reasons I bought it was the viewfinder that lets you take a picture without using the screen on the back. I have another camera that has the same feature, and it has come in so handy that I did not want to give a gift without this view finder option. The reason I went with this camera is the Canon name and favorable reviews and lower cost through an Amazon partner, where-as the camera I have (Ni-kon) would have cost considerably more. The picture quality is good, the flash works well, and the camera is using a 4 GB SDHC class 6 memory card beautifully. For batteries, we gave Energ. ultimate lithium, which lets the user avoid having to use & manage rechargeable batteries, since new ones are easy to replace and recycle. The use of the camera is limited, so the batteries last and do not loose charge while in storage, and the flash charges quickly still. I have not seen the pictures on a computer screen yet, but on the preview back screen, the pictures look good, and video also looks good. The buttons on the back could have better labels, but the selection wheel on the top works excellent, with nice clicks between the different camera options. Overall, I’m please with the camera and its function.

Notations @ 1:27 pm

New and Improved not necessarily better
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The 10.0 megapixel A1000IS is a good camera but nothing that I would consider a massive improvement in everyday 4×6 to 5×7 photo quality over my old Canon Power Shot 2.0 megapixel A40. The video function is improved but that’s video — and it eats memory like a hungry hound. In most pedestrian ways I prefer the A40.

I know both cameras and their functions. I find myself having to manipulate and resize nearly every photo on the A1000 once I download it on the computer – and that’s on the lowest quality setting. The red eye is much more prevalent on the A1000 than the A40 and low light is a problem with or without the flash. The A40 was always reliable.

The A40 has 4 shooting modes plus video. The A1000 has eight plus video. In this situation, less is more. The A1000 is a nice camera but it’s a simple case of how much do you really need?

Like so many things today, we have too many choices.

Another solid Canon camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Excellent image quality…optical image stabilizer works great! My second Canon camera (also have the S3IS) and they both take excellent pictures and are easy to use for the novice or intermediate photographer. Had a Sony compact camera in between…will never buy a Sony again…any motion by the shooter resulted in absolute blur. I’ve used my Canons on boats and the images are still crisp despite the motion. My future cameras will all be Canons!!!

This camera takes some great pictures. If you’re looking for a general use camera (something to replace a point and shoot film camera, say) this is a bargain. It takes huge pictures, and they’re very clear and crisp. It’s also far better on batteries than the old 3.2 megapixel it replaced.

This purchase was a Christmas present to myself. Great buy! This powershot came highly recommended. I am impressed with the video capability and quality pictures. Easy to use. The memory card in the package was a teaser, I then purchased 4gb since I was constantly taking pictures. Regardless of taking the picture vertically or horizontally, you can view on the LCD in any position. I’ve recommended this camera to others.

I’m in heaven when I use this camera! lol :)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
First off, I cannot express enough how awesome the quality is on this camera! :) Everytime I pick it up to use it, I can almost always expect the best quality from any camera I’ve ever used, even in the video feature! :)

To be honest, I spent 500$ on a JVC digital video camera, and the images AND videos would turn out mostly washed out or gritty. However, I only spent 152$ (including shipping) on this Canon Powershot camera, and I think it’s the best 150$ I’ve ever spent! :) I love to film videos as much as I do photos, so I was EXTREMELY amazed and excited when I found out that the video quality was JUST as fantastic as the photo quality! It’s my first “more professional, yet amateur” camera, and I’m completely satisfied :)

The only disadvantage is that if you want to take a photo of yourself, you can’t see the LCD screen to see where you’re aiming. Other than that, NO problems! :) I’d recommend Canon Powershots to anyone, and I can promise that Canon will be the first and only brand I look at when buying another camera product! :)

Just what I was looking for…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was looking for a replacement for my Canon Powershot SD700. At the time, I think I paid a little over $300 for the SD700 and it was a great camera for my purposes. However, I hesitantly let my 6-year-old son take a picture of my daughter and I at the zoo and he accidentally dropped it. That was the end of that camera. I decided that I’d buy an inexpensive replacement rather than repair the old camera. I’m not a pro… just a mom who likes to take pictures of the kids, family vacations and gatherings, etc. When I have the time I even do a little scrapbooking. So, I just needed something basic for family memories. I would have preferred something with a lithium rechargeable battery since they are smaller and they battery life is great. However, the Powershot A1000IS (which I paid $129 for less than a year ago here at amazon)was a great choice.

I wouldn’t pay the current listed amazon price of $399 for it but it’s a great basic camera for what I paid. I use inexpensive eneloop rechargeable batteries and they are more than sufficient. Easy to use, especially if you’re accustomed to using Canons. Takes movies. Good quality photos and fairly compact size. It’s not quite as small as my SD700 was (RIP) but close enough. It’ll fit into your purse or jacket pocket. I bought purple… love the color.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Great camera with a 10mp capability. The price is definitely a plus. We bought this to supplement our digital SLR. It’s often easier to shove this small camera into a pocket than grab the camera bag and the attachments for the SLR. We recently used it for a trip to Kitty Hawk, NC, and the results were great (but not as good as the SLR.) Recommend you also buy a 2 or 4 GB SD card as the 32MB card that comes with the camera will only allow about 8 pictures at high quality.

Camerwindow: Which Applies To This Model?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Purchased in Aug. 2009, and as my 1st digital camera, I’m still learning its features, and take captions a couple of times monthly. One thing for certain, even with the use of Duracell rechargeable batteries, I get the “change batteries” prompt a bit too often to my liking.

Additionally, I have yet to find any support for my inquiry of Camerawindow. Namely, of these:

Canon Utilities CameraWindow

Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC

Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC_DV 5 for ZoomBrowser EX

Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC_DV 6 for ZoomBrowser EX

Which of the above is/are specifically for the Canon A1000IS?

ANY response, from those familiar with the above, would certainly be appreciated.

My camera is a Canon DSLR (XSI) so I’m very spoiled but when I look at some of the pictures this camera takes, I’m blown away at the awesome picture quality, color rendition, sharpness & detail. 4x Zoom versus the standard 3x is also a good thing. Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Been looking to get myself a new camera after my previous one broke. After reading various reviews, I went for this one.

After a week of taking pictures of about anything I can think of, I love it. Takes good pictures, lots of user friendly features and adjustments for when I took to take some more difficult shots.

Only problem I have is the terrible battery life. The ones packaged in only lasted 2-4 hours tops. I replaced them with some new batteries. Same life-span.

Look into getting a supply of re-chargable batteries on hand if you looking to be going somewhere you plan to use your camera alot.

A Good Deal
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I recently bought this Canon A1000IS, and I’ve been toying around with it for the past several days. I was looking for a point-and-shoot camera that I could carry around and travel with and take fairly good pictures. This is the exact camera I was looking for. I bought this over the A2000/A2100 because of its smaller size, cheaper cost, and viewfinder. I bought this over the new A1100 because the main difference between the A1000 and the new A1100 is the extra 2.1 megapixels. I’m not a big fan of the brown color that I have, but it was the cheapest option. I’d personally prefer the blue or gray.

Pros:

AA batteries – Don’t do regular alkaline. Go with NiMH rechargeable batteries, and preferably Eneloop or precharged Duracell and the like. It lasts a good while. I’ve taken many test shots, video, changing settings, reviewing test shots and my eneloop batteries are still going strong.

Image quality – Canon-like quality. Not Digital SLR quality. Other reviews state that high ISO is grainy. Personally I’ve gone up to ISO 400 and 800 with my photos, and as a point-and-shoot the image quality is just fine.

Optical Zoom – 4x optical which is more than the typical 3x in most point and shoots.

Camera Body – Sturdy body for the most part and the LCD screen is a good size.

Cons:

Flash recharge – It’s not that bad, but it can take up to 5-6 seconds to recharge sometimes. If you’re getting a point-and-shoot though, then it’s not like you need to be taking multiple quick shots.

Buttons – The buttons are not backlit so it can be hard to see in the dark. I’m not sure how many cameras even have backlit buttons. You can redirect the lcd light to the buttons if you really need to see the button labels.

Compartment doors – The door for the AA battery and memory compartment looks and feels flimsy. Also the door for the AV and USB compartment is an elastic door that’s not that great.

Glossy LCD screen – The LCD screen has some pretty bad glare, but there is a viewfinder. Most cameras usually have glossy, glarey screens anyway I think.

Cannot control shutter speed – You can’t manually adjust shutter speed, so you have to play around with just ISO and flash.

Size – This could very well also be a pro, but the size is bigger than the other subcompact cameras. However you won’t find a smaller camera that takes AA batteries to my knowledge. It fits well in my hand though, and I think I have average sized hands. It can easily fit in a front pocket unless you have tight pants and small pockets.

I recommend the Canon A1000IS. It’s a good deal.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera for a vacation to California and was very pleased. My friends were very impressed with the quality of the images. As the days passed, I took better and better shots. I kept it on

Auto” most of the time and found that to be satisfactory.

One minor gripe, you can turn the flash off, but not force it on, that would be handy when you are outside, but have shadow on your subjects faces. Other than that, and for the money, I am more than satisfied with this camera

Edit: Upon reading through the manual, I find that I am mistaken. You can’t force the flash to fire in AUTO mode, but can in other modes.

Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera because my we wanted a camera to replace out outdated Canon 6mp. My Wife opted for this over the Panasonic Limix, as it was compact and could fit easily in her purse. We ended up getting the Limix later…

I was disappointed with this camera from the beginning. Taking indoor shots in a large room, the flash is inadequate, about 5 Ft is max. The flash/mode controls are not easily changed on the fly and are somewhat confusing. Our older Canon was easier in this aspect. Pictures were not as good as our Canon SD-1100is, which I’d strongly recommend if you want a compact that takes better pictures than some of the “big boys.”

And consider this; If you are prone to misplacing or loosing small things, consider a larger camera. My wife lost hers (it slipped right off of her wrist while walking from an event) after only 2 hours of use..

It’s An Excellent Camera, but…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent camera for the price, but I was a little disappointed about one thing and pleasantly surprised about another thing.

I was disappointed that I couldn’t manually focus as I could do with the Canon a510 that I purchased 3 1/2 years ago. This is especially helpful in low light situations. It’s also nice to be able to check whether or not the auto-focus has focused properly…You can set the A1000 to “macro”, “normal” and “infinity”, but from there you have to hope that the auto-focus worked properly.

I was pleasantly surprised that the aperture automatically adjusted to the changing light conditions in the movie mode. You can also lighten or darken the light reading in the movie mode, but if you do this, the aperture won’t adjust to changing light conditions as you make a video.

The camera is small enough to fit in a small case or pocket or pocketbook.

….I’ve owned the camera for almost a year now…I still miss being able to manual focus as I could with the a510. I was just out trying to take a picture of a spider’s web. I couldn’t focus on it with the a1000. With manual focus I would have been able set the focus on around 1 foot…Then an airliner went overhead. I tried taking a picture of that on 4x zoom and the camera would focus on it. If I had manual focus, I could have set it on infinity…Also, when it come to taking movies with this camera, I think that the a510 had a better microphone than the a1000.

Excellent picture quality and level of detail. The 10 Megapixel capability is well correlated with lens performance and does make a difference in pictures of large groups. Great movie clips quality too. I was a bit uneasy initially about the battery life but, using the viewfinder as primary means for framing, they last for about 250 pictures. I wish the optical zoom was more powerful – that’s why the rating penalty. Otherwise, great!

A sure-thing. The digital camera nearly perfected
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It’s a bit overwhelming when you’re researching digital cameras. So many makes and models. And no one wants to get stuck with a lemon.

I think Canon has pretty much perfect the point-and-shoot digital camera. There’s dedicated switches for those things needing “switching”, dedicated buttons for those things needing “buttoning”, etc. Go ahead, use a digital camera from 4-5 years ago when manufacturers were still figuring out what was really necessary, what users needed to get to quickly, and you’ll see what I mean.

This camera is fine. Solid construction. Since you don’t need anywhere near 10 megapixels, set it at 6 and you’ll be happy. The menus make sense. The batteries can die when you’re in East Botswania and you can replace them.

It is a TAD big for the pocket (for a guy) and it’s surprisingly heavy if you’re a wimp like me and have a man purse. Not “heavy” per se, just heavy enough that you definitely notice when it’s not in your bag. Actually, being a little heavy in that regard could be a good thing.

So stop reading endless reviews. You have better things to do with your time. Buy this camera. Then go buy 4 rechargeable AAs and a charger for $15 from Target. Just don’t drop it on the lens like I did… unless you’re looking for an excuse to upgrade.

Melissa J L Franklin @ 3:53 pm

overall, good camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
lightweight, easy to use and set up. appears to take good quality pictures. the only concern with the camera is that there seems to be a bit of a delay in between taking pictures, meaning if you want to take multiple shots fairly quickly, you may lost the moment waiting for the camera to return to shooting mode after taking a picture. this may be due to user inexperience with this new camera, as I have not thoroughly read the manual/instructions. Other than this, the camera seems to be exactly what I was looking for when making this purchase.

Canon Powershot A1000 – the perfect camera for me
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I did a lot of research before buying this camera. I was looking for a camera in the $100-$150 range to replace a Nikon Coolpix I had had for 5 years; I was happy with that camera until I dropped and broke it. I bought the Powershot on the basis of a couple different camera comparison sites which rated it technically very highly, and because it is one of the few cameras in its class with a separate viewfinder, which is very useful when shooting in low light or very bright light when it’s hard to see the image on the screen. I like the way it feels in the hand and the choice of colors was fun, too – who ever heard of a brown camera! I’ve been using it now for a few weeks and am very happy with it. It makes separate sounds when you focus, and then when you shoot; my Coolpix didn’t make any sound so if you weren’t familiar with the camera you wouldn’t know if the picture was taken. I bought a 4 gig card with it for an amazing $11, so it holds 1500 photos. Highly recommended.

Great Camera for a low price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera in May 2009 for a trip my husband and I took to Alaska. It is a fantastic little camera and we are very happy with it. Cannon cameras are generally rated as a top choice for consumer reports and I just saw that a recent Consumer Reports magazine had this camera featured on the front. This camera is user-friendly, takes crisp pictures, uses only two AA batteries (which lasted us about 150-200 pictures), is light, takes pictures faster and is ready to take the next picture faster than our previous five-year old Powershot model. The only downsides are the fact that it only comes with a memory card that holds NINE pictures total. That’s a little ridiculous. Plan on spending an extra $20 for a 4 GB memory card. It’s still a great deal for what you get with this camera when you compare price to quality and I would buy it again and recommend it to others!

For the price – it cannot be beat
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned this camera for 6 months and it is one in a long line of Cannon camera’s I have owned.

There are no consumer cameras with better lenses and color rendition than Canon. I had some issues with

my Canon $350 SD950 – but it was never picture quality – it was durability. I am pleased to say

that the A1000 gets high marks for both durability and picture quality. It has taken a lot of abuse

including being dropped from three feet on a concrete floor, being sprayed with a hose, and being caught in a dust storm.

I bought it as soon as it came out because it uses AA batteries and I never have to worry about

having batteries. Get decent quality AA’s and the camera has battery life comparable to any consumer point-and-shoot. There was no 12MP version available when I bought this but 10MP is adequate for most purposes. (I am a little concerned with the upgraded version – the 12MP A1100 because I recently bought one from Amazon and within a few days the lens refused to open. Of course Amazon stands behind their products and the exchange for a new camera was quick and cost nothing because we were in the 30 day window – which Amazon actually extends to about 37 days because of shipping. Thank you Amazon.)

I read in a few reviews about the door that you open to insert the batteries and the SD card. It did

concern me at first, but it didn’t take long to get the hang of it. Be aware that batteries have

to fit snugly for the current to flow properly, especially with AA’s, so there has to be some pressure on them and that explains the design of the door.

I have heard that this camera has been very well-received by the public and I cannot believe that the

street price actually went up rather than down, as is common. This camera reminds me of the basic Toyota Camry – sturdy and reliable.

I haven’t used this camera as much as I expected to yet, but it’s easy to use and takes care of all the basics. I need a good outdoor performer, so limited my search to devices with optical viewfinders for shooting in bright light situations. Great camera, poor LCD
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This camera is a wonderful value, but it has one flaw that might make you think you got a lemon: the LCD makes almost every picture look slightly blurry. Compared to other Canon Powershots, the image preview looks washed out and ugly. However, the actual pictures come out looking great, and the image stabilization really works.

Video quality is extremely good, and as far as I can tell there’s no limit on how long your videos can last. The sound is good in most situations, but loud noises (such as concerts) blow out the audio.

My only other complaint is that it can take a long time to actually take a picture after you hit the shutter button. Prefocusing helps, but sometimes the camera will simply refuse to take a picture. Playing with the modes might make a difference; I’m not sure.

Not Canon quality
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This camera may be 10MP, but my 5MP Nikon Coolpix 5000 and 5400 took sharper pictures. The body of this camera seems like flimsy plastic. Every flash picture I’ve taken has suffered from redeye. Worst of all, there are two very bright hot pixel groups which have appeared within two weeks of the camera’s purchase. These are very prominent in the viewfinder, and are quite annoying. They show up in the final images too, but are less obvious. The only way to get rid of these is to send the camera to Canon, to have the hot pixels remapped. There is no way for the end user to do this himself with this camera. Also there is no RAW mode unless you run the CHDK hacker toolkit, which hasn’t yet been ported to this camera. It seems to me that 10 megapixels exceeds the capability of the lens to deliver a sharp image. But since there is no RAW or TIFF mode support, there’s no way to know for sure. It could just be JPEG compression noise on every freaking image, which I find disappointing.

On the positive side, the camera’s face detection is excellent; the flesh tones are very real; the camera is very compact in size, and uses standard AA batteries. The preview LCD is large, and there is also an optical viewfinder with tracking zoom. The automatic lens cover works great. I’m sure there are worse cameras in this price range, but I really expected more from Canon.

Bottom line: if you want something cheap, get a used Nikon coolpix. If you really want a Canon, save your money and get a Powershot G10 for $350. That is a superior camera.

I love almost everything about my A1000
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got this camera a few weeks ago to replace a previous Canon digital camera (the A540) that I absolutely loved. So far I’ve been very happy with this one, with one glaring exception – not specifically about the camera itself, but rather the software that comes with it.

I’m an amateur photographer and find that this type of point-and-shoot works well for me – especially since it has a 4x optical zoom which gives clearer, more vivid photos. I really like how easy the Canon cameras are to use and the range of features – and this one doesn’t disappoint. I also like the 2.5″ LCD and the fact that this camera is small enough to easily fit in a pocket or purse. It’s really very versatile and I love that about it.

The only things that I really can complain about are that I do somewhat miss the chunky handgrip on my previous Canon, but that’s not a huge deal. What IS a huge deal, for me anyway, is their ‘updated’ version of the Camera Window software that comes with this camera. This is the software that you run to download photos from the camera – and I can’t believe how horrible this particular version is. The previous version that I used with my other Canon camera was great – it was windows-based and you could select any photos on your card then download, print or delete them as you wished. However, in this new version – it’s got a black interface, no text by the icons to tell you what they do – and there is no way to delete the photos from your card. I e-mailed Canon to double-check and was told that yes, this is the case – you have to use Windows Explorer to delete your photos. Why I would want to use two different programs when before I could easily use just one is beyond me… I’m going to re-install the old version that I have and hope that it will work with this camera, because I am incredibly annoyed with the new version right now.

Other than the software issue, I love this camera and think that it’s a very good choice for someone who wants a camera that takes a great quality photo and is easy to use and carry around. I only hope that Canon will re-think the Camera Window decision – I’m a loyal Canon enthusiast, but am very disappointed in them right now.

Lens Error…new camera
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I got the Canon A1000IS camera for Christmas 2008…along with the case from Canon…to be sure it was protected. I took a few photos around Christmas and in January, mostly to learn how to work the camera. Then in early March I left for a 3 week vacation to South Africa. After shooting, perhaps, 400 photos at 10mp the lens error occurred and the carmera became unusable. None of the (non-violent) solutions proposed on the WEB helped so here I am on top of Table Mountain without a working camera. Let’s just say I’m not totally happy with this purchase.

Canon PowerShot A1000IS = Great Camera for entire family to use!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After a lot of research and hands-on examinations, I have now purchased the Canon PowerShot A1000IS and am very happy with it. It is a great point and shoot camera that is fun for my family to use right out of the box with the “EASY” button setting. It has some more technical settings if one wants to tinker a little with their shots, but I bought it for my wife to carry in her small purse and take fast, high quality pictures without any fuss and this camera fits the bill. I have found Canon products and tech support to be superior over any other maker of consumer electronic products, especially including cameras and printers. The flash recharges faster with rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and they last longer. I bought a AA/AAA charger with 4 pre-charged AA batteries for only $10 and they work great, last forever. Also like the use of SD memory cards that are fairly cheap, readily available and work directly with my printer or through the included mini USB cable that I connect to my computer. I have owned a Canon 35mm SLR camera in the past and was always very happy with it, but cannot say the same about my prior Pentax, Nikon, Kodak or Sony camera purchases, both digital and non-digital. The Canon A1000IS is just a good all-around camera for general everyday use. It is small and compact, yet loaded with features and looks and feels like a more expensive camera. I really like the inverting LCD display, wide angle option and location of the zoom feature on the top shutter button insead on the back of the camera like most digitals. I will be buying a Canon again for sure.

And, the ease of use is incredible. Still learning all the ins and outs but definitely a good purchase. Great point and shoot
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
While this camera does more than just point and shoot, that’s the main reason I got it. It’s pretty intuitive to use, and although the manual seems very well organized and clearly written, I could pretty much pick it up and use it without any difficulty. A memory card comes with the camera, which is nice, but it has a low capacity, which is not good if you don’t think about it before you use it and then run out of memory. However, since this is for office use and there is rarely much need to take more than 20 pictures at a time, it was easy to adjust the size of the photos so the card will hold more. And the pictures were still very good.

Technology? Wow!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m of an age (62) where I’ve moved from “fuddy-duddy” to “fuzzy-wuzzy.” In my prime I was a semi-serious photographer who knew what he was doing with a top-of-the-line 35mm camera and got terrific results. My first digital camera–bought for fun, and for a lot of money–was so clumsy to use and produced such poor images that I vowed not to get another until the technology had caught up with the promise.

It has!

For $129, I thought I’d give digital another chance. Wow! Out of the box, after five minutes reading the manual, I was able to use the simplest full-auto settings to capture some great looking pictures which I was able to easily manipulate and print. In the week since I’ve been devouring the manual. On every page I learn something new: “Oh, you mean this little camera can do THAT???” “It can take video, too?” “It can display 9-picture galleries of photos?” “You mean Image Stabilization all but eliminates shaky pictures?” “You mean I can add short audio ‘caption’ to my pictures?”

I did all my comparison shopping on the Internet, without holding an actual camera in my hands, and this Canon seemed to have the features I wanted at a great price. I’m sure there are other cameras that can do more and do it better–but at what price? From my position as “fuddy duddy emeritus” all I can say is that this pocket-size wonder produces great pictures, and has technology that you couldn’t get twenty years ago if you were willing to spend $20,000 on a camera.

Thumbwheel w/icons on top are easier for my big fingers, instead of “thumbnailing” small buttons to scroll the LCD menu. Note the optiical stabilization (preferred over digital) and the 4x over usual 3x. I like the idea of AA batteries, being in the woods or on a roadtrip, you can pop in two spares, or buy them most anywhere. What if you left your charger at home? …And where is the nearest outlet? Consumer Reports, 12/8, top-rated ENERGIZER Ultimate batteries, and the Sanyo LSD eneloop battery & charger kit (at amazon, about $34.00) look interesting. OR,..you could just carry a spare compact-type battery used in most other rechargeable point-and-shoots.

We replace an A510 with this one. This newer A- series is superior in every respect. Best camera for the money
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My old camera is a Panasonic FZ7 that I purchased about four years ago for about $500 when they first came out. I was perfectly happy with it until I saw the pictures my girlfriend was getting with a $149 Nikon point and shoot camera that she recently bought. Her average shots outperformed my best with the FZ7. That was the catalyst for buying my Canon A1000.

I did a weekend’s worth of research. I checked all of the reviews online. Then, I remembered that Consumer Reports had recently ranked the digital cameras and there was the Canon A1000 second on the list surrounded by $400+ cameras! I researched the A1000 and the vast majority of the reviews are highly favorable. This is the best camera out there in the $100 to $150 price range. And you get a view finder for those bright sunshine days that wash out the digital display. The pictures it takes are simply phenomenal!

The good -

1 Sharp pictures

2 Colors are spot on

3 Special settings for most any conditions

4 The controls are reasonably intuitive

5 Nice size. Feels good and steady in your hand.

6 OPTICAL image stabilization! WOW! (works great)

7 Super-fast start up and next shot capability with an 8GB Class Six SDHC card.

8 Uses AA batteries available everywhere

9 Good users manual

10 Takes better pictures than my girlfriend’s Nikon!(This was #1 priority)

The not so good -

1 The memory card it comes with is a joke.

2 The included download software is just mediocre at best.

You are going to love this camera. It is one of those rare products where the stars aligned and they really got it right!

Works with Mac OS X
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This camera suits my needs very well. Along with basic camera functions, I wanted something that worked with a macintosh. The pictures can be automatically uploaded to the computer using iPhoto and OS X. I have OS 10.3 and iPhoto 6. The software that came with the camera wanted OS 10.4 and above.

As for the camera itself, I found that it did not like the rechargeable batteries that I had. Thus, I had to order Canon rechargeable batteries. They work well. To give it credit, the manual clearly says that the camera works with alkaline batteries and Canon rechargeable batteries.

The SD memory card that came with the camera is too small for practical purposes. Be prepared to buy a larger card.

I have had the camera less than a month, so I am still learning about it. The default settings work well, but a little tweaking might make things better.

One thing that surprised me is the focusing method. This camera defaults to face detect. The camera must have had fun finding a face in my flowers.:)

The ability to view the pictures on a TV is nice.

Poor image quality, way too noisy
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera to replace my 6MP Nikon Coolpix L1 compact. The screen on that camera had become damaged, though it still took good pictures. I gave that camera away to a friend in a 3rd world country.

I researched this new camera online quite a bit before purchasing it.

The main thing that attracted me to this camera was that it had an optical viewfinder. That feature was lacking on the Nikon L1, and I will never again make the mistake of purchasing a camera without an optical viewfinder, since it’s very hard to take pictures outdoors without one.

Another very important feature to me was AA battery support. Also nice was SDHC card support (so I could share the same card as in my DSLR). And of course the camera has a good number of megapixels.

Once I got the camera in my hands unfortunately, I was disappointed. The optical viewfinder is very small. And its optics are very bad – you don’t actually get a clear view of what you are shooting through it.

The colors that you see at shooting time on the LCD screen are severely lacking and in no way match the final result of the pictures.

But the worst part about this camera without question is the image quality. Every single shot I took was grainy. Even at ISO 80 the noise is pronounced. Also, the pictures are not sharp. Even though they seem to be in focus, small text is unreadable even when magnifying the picture 1:1 on screen. This was completely unexpected. The image quality is worse than my first digital camera, a 3MP Olympus C3000 from 2001. And it is noticeably worse than the Nikon L1. I played with all the settings on the camera to try to make it better but to no avail – I was very frustrated.

Unfortunately, this is a fatal flaw, and none of the nice features of the camera like IS, or the excellent software, can make up for it.

This is the first point in shoot camera I have bought in over 5 years so when I decided it was time to upgrade my old digital camera I was surprised to discover that I could get a 10MP digital camera for half the price of what I paid for my old 4MP digital camera.

This camera is simple to use but delivers great photos. The main reasons I picked this camera is because of size and price and its performance which I have read about here and various camera websites. This camera is small enough for me to take with me anywhere I wish to go and its not a cumbersome burden like my old camera, since I have taken up hiking and rock climbing in the last year this is extremely important to me and so far it has been great to take along! The pictures it takes are awesome! I was really impressed with the quality of photos this thing takes when it is utilizing the digital zoom, it can really get out there and deliver quality of photos leaps and bounds over the digital zoom capabilities of my old camera!

Overall its a compact camera that is simple to use and delivers amazing photos! Doesn’t take a pro to use this camera and get profesional results.

New to Digital Photography-Canon served me well
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this Canon Powershot just before leaving on a family trip and had just a few hours to familiarize myself with it before putting it to work. Given my lack of familiarity with any digital cameras, I have little with which to make a comparison, however, I found the camera easy to use and was very satisfied with the resulting pictures.

I was warned by my sister that the capacity of the memory card supplied with the camera would be too small, so I immediately bought another card. If I hadn’t been forewarned, I certainly would have been disappointed on my trip.

Finally, in the course of two weeks I took about 300 photographs and ran through three sets of batteries. The 2x batteries are inexpensive and easy to find, but I don’t know if that rate of use is par for the course.

Overall, I was pleased with the ease of use and the quality of the pictures.

Best camera I’ve ever owned
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m not a super-savvy photographer, just somebody who wants to take a decent picture. This camera does all the work for me and makes me look like I know what I’m doing.

Most of the time I keep it set on Auto, so the camera figures out whether a flash is necessary, what the ISO setting needs to be, all that stuff, and makes it happen. I set up the shot and press the button, and the photo comes out great.

I have tried some of the other specialty settings, like Floral, for taking close-ups of flowers, and that does help to bring out the colors without over-exposing them with the flash. I’ve also tried Nighttime and Aquarium settings, and those both were very helpful. Ones I want to try but haven’t only because I haven’t been in the right environment yet are Fireworks and Beach. The point is, it’s very user-friendly for someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about what they’re doing.

A friend told me he thought I didn’t need 10 megapixels, but I quietly disagreed with him. I do a lot of stuff in print publishing, so I know that the resolution of photos matters. I got 10 megapixels because I figured I wouldn’t have to worry about resolution or size issues, and I was not wrong. Every photo I’ve taken would work just fine in a print format.

Downloading the photos is pretty easy. Sometimes my PC forgets where the program is, even when I have the camera plugged into it, so I have to find the program instead of having it launch automatically. Once I’ve got the program running, though, it pretty much manages itself. Then it brings up a viewer that allows me to see and edit the photos one at a time, or play them in a slide show.

Here are the few, minor downsides I’ve discovered so far. Those specialty settings are a little buried in the menus, so the first couple of tries I couldn’t remember how to get to them. Same thing with some of the more advanced, do-it-yourself features. I wanted to take a photo of the full moon and I knew there was a way to adjust the ISO settings manually, but I couldn’t figure that out without the manual in my hand. Since I didn’t happen to have the manual with me up at the top of the mountain, I was out of luck.

The biggest downside (and it’s not even that big) is this camera burns through batteries like they’re matchsticks. I’ll use the camera over a period of a few hours, turning the camera off when it’s not in use or letting it “sleep” or shut itself off when it wants to. After three or four of those types of sessions, it tells me it needs new batteries. If I’ve used the flash a lot or if I’ve taken movies, the batteries burn up much faster. I haven’t tried using rechargeable AA’s in there yet, but I think I’m going to give that a go.

The battery compartment is kind of tricky to open. You have to slide a button forward and then slide the cover off to the right. It’s hard to hold the button forward and push to the right at the same time, so I usually have to work at it a few times before I can get it open.

You’ll also want to purchase a case to carry & protect this, and a memory card with lots of capacity. I got an 8 MB memory card, which in this camera can hold 2500 photos at a time. I haven’t even come close to filling it up yet.

Overall, the camera was definitely worth the price. I’ve made a point of noticing when I’ve been at stores that sell this camera, and nobody else has had it available for a lower price.

Feb. 27, 09 I have had this camera for about a month and it is GREAT. My Sony DSC92 died and I did alot of research for a new camera. It has every feature you will ever need. I just found out last night I could record a movie and size it for Emails…..works great the zoom is locked but thats ok. On the batteries, if you are using rechargeable use Duracell 2650 mAh. you can find it a Walgreens charger and batteries for about 20 bucks. up grade the mem card to atleast 4G and I have read that you cant erase all the pics at once, yes you can, use the card format feature and it will erase the card slick.

Decent point & shoot
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Easy to use, takes decent pictures. What more are you expecting in a point & shoot? The LCD screen is great, and I like the fact that it has a viewfinder. Too many P & S cameras don’t. Viewfinders are great for saving batteries, work better in bright sunlight, and you can actually hold the camera a lot more still than when you’re using the usual digicam stance.

Seems to be pretty rugged. My son dropped it when he was getting into the minivan, from a height of about 3ft onto asphalt, got a little scratch on the case, but otherwise works fine.

The biggest complaint I have is that the flash recharge seems really slow.

I was looking for a new camera to replace my Kodak Easy Share that was 10 years old. After a lot of research, I decided to try the Canon and I’m so happy I did. It’s very easy to use…it has great results and great pictures. I can’t believe the changes in quality and color with this camera. It’s definitely worth its price. And downloading the pictures to my computer is a lot easier than using a dock. Plus it’s the perfect size for taking with you, but not too small that you can lose it. Great Camera!!

Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The camera takes nice pictures and is very easy to operate, but to my surprise the picture quality is not even close to my old 2001 FinePix 2800 ZOOM camera by FujiFilm. This old camera has only 2 MPixels so the prints are limited to about 8 x 10, nevertheless I was surprised when I took several pictures at the same conditions and it show clearly that for some unknown reason the sensor CCD used by FinePix 2800 is a much, much better. I don’t know why?

This is an awesome camera. I used it in my New York trip last year and again in my Arizona trip this month. It took amazing pictures 95% of the time. The other 5% is mostly due to operator error. You could just put it in “Auto” but it is better to take time to know the different scenes and features of the camera. Yes it is a tad bigger than other newer models. But this camera is worth every penny. You will never regret buying this..

I ordered this project as a camera for use on a job site for a construction inspector. It arrived 3 days quicker than expected, with a case and memory card bundle. The case is a little big, as the A1000 is much thinner and sleeker than its parent, the A590. Its a small, compact, canon, which takes great pictures way above its price point.

Canon A1000IS, good so far.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Purchased the camera, with some trepidation. A lot of good reviews, but noticed the lens error mania. My last camera, a fuji failed with a lens error as well. In view of this, I guess many point and shoot digital cameras can ultimately have lens problems. Rough handling I am sure is a factor in many cases. In any case, the camera has taken fine photos so far. Printing on my Canon photo printer produces great prints. I do find the zoom lens a bit uneven, zooming out or in seems to be not real smoothe. Minor for my uses. Barring a premature lens problem, the camera seems great. The price some of the vendors on Amazon are selling? $249.99. What is with that? I bought mine on Staples on sale ($10 off, not much) for 129.99. I added the usual 4 gig card, since the included 32meg card would only hold about 11 pictures default. Ridiculously small card to include.

This camera was for my wife who has had trouble in the past using digital cameras. We bought this camera because it has an optical viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen. We are most pleased that we did so, since the screen is almost impossible to see in bright sunlight. Don’t buy a camera without an optical viewfinder! The camera has a special setting for novice users which eliminates most decision making, although it has many sophisticated settings if you want to use them. I highly recommend the camera although there are two negatives. The batteries ran down quickly, although I suspect using Lithium batteries would solve this problem. The zoom works easily but switches from optical zoom at 4X to higher zoom levels which are only digitally enhanced. I wish the zoom would stop at just the 4X level unless you intentionally overroad it. Otherwise, a great camera.

A1000is is a new version of powershot series and a newer version is available but this camera is enough for ordinary household and outdoor fun photography. These small automatic cameras are not for Commercial or Expert photographers even though you can take excellent photos to enter a contest.

If someon eis new to this camera it is good to go over the manual to understand the working otherwise if you had an older version like I had poershot A560, you do not need to read or know much about the working. Almost everything is similar with few upgrades. It is 10 megapixels so obviously the image has more pixels and must be more sharp and crisp but I do not find any difference between A560 (7.1mp) and A1000is (10mp).

I have taken great pictures using both cameras and I still have both and both working without any issues. It is easier to carry this camera in a pocket becaue it has no edges like the A560 but it could be slighty tricky for some to handle in one hand. Not a big problem for me.

Again the flash is not that strong for indoors and pictures are dim, darm or grainy. Excellent for outdoors in moderate light. Generally it is not recommended to take pitures in full bright sunlight as these get over exposed, such is the case with this camera also. If you get a deal on this it is good otherwise it is worth buying for what it is sold for these days.

I bought this camera for my wife and we have both enjoyed using it. It takes great pictures outdoors, and the face recognition is amazing! My wife likes that when she reviews the portrait photographs that she has taken, she can turn the camera vertical and they turn vertical to take up the whole screen like they do in the photo taking mode. The one down side, for me, is that the flash on the camera is not that strong. You have to be up close to get a good shot in lower light conditions, but if you get too close you burn the people in the photograph. All in all it is a great camera, and this is coming from a professional photographer that still shoots film for my projects.

Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The camera is fine… it’s got basic features, & it’s a good size. We wanted a camera that uses regular batteries. They’re more convenient (you can get them anywhere, & it’s easy to carry extras)& we NEVER had a problem before with batteries… even with our more expensive Canon. Well, this camera has taken up to 14 seconds to RECHARGE the flash after we take a picture. If you’re a regular camera user, that is FOREVER when you’re trying to get a shot of just about ANYTHING, especially kids! You’ve MISSED the MOMENT!!!! It’s ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! We sent it back to Canon, SURE that something was wrong. They sent a note back, saying they’d fix it & there WERE defective parts. Sure enough, it came back… NO BETTER! We USE the special camera batteries. It DOESN’T MATTER! You can’t tell how long the camera will take to recharge each time. But it is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING, bcs you MISS every chance at a good photo!! It’s a shame. It takes nice photos, & has everything else you could need… except it’s gone BACKWARDS in time & quality. Digital cameras have been around long enough… such a LONG delay should NOT be an issue anymore!

Purchased this camera about 4 months ago. Have had previous experience with Canon powershot cameras which took very sharp photo’s. Was very interested in the image stabilization. Thought this would help even more photos turn out. In 4 months of use most photos are lacking in sharpness and I am ready to give up on this camera. Yes, still under warranty and perhaps this one is just a bad one off the line. Warranty repair is kind of a pain and given I got this cheap it might just end up under the tires of my car.

Bought this camera because I was looking to own a cam that is AA battery operated. My old camera was a 2003 graduation gift (canon powershot sd100) and it still works fine, I just fed up with keep buying new batteries (for $40) every year not to mention how much I hated to lose pictures due to battery issues. Now I can just replace the old batteries with new AAs and I’m good.

There are two things I don’t like about this camera, the A1000IS. 1. the flash. The flash is at the very top corner of the camera and most of the times I don’t even realize that I cover it when I shoot the picture….and the picture will come out dark. Also, the flash on my old and now 6 year old Canon Powershot SD100was brighter and better than this one. 2. the materials used for this new camera are pretty cheap compared to my old SD100 which was hard metal not some cheap plastic like this. The pictures it takes are nice but I’m not sure if it’s any nicer then the ones I take with the SD100.

I just returned from vacation and in reviewing my photos, I noticed right away that it worked well in all lighting conditions. I mainly used the Auto function, and once had to use the night function, when I took some pictures inside a cave. The cave pics turned out much better than I was expecting. The lighting was good and the details are clear and crisp. But what I liked most about this camera was it’s portability- it stayed in my pocket almost the whole vacation. (I still haven’t found a case that will clip on my pocket.)Because it was at hand, I took more pictures than usual. I bought this camera for a two-week trip to Hungary, without knowing much about it except for the customer reviews I read here on Amazon. I am so glad I went for it! This little baby just blows me away. It fits in a pocket. It’s cute. It uses AA batteries, which is VERY helpful when you’re constantly out and about and don’t have time to charge a special camera battery. The pictures are very high quality for the camera’s size – never before have I taken such accurate nighttime shots. I am legitimately obsessed with this little guy. No, this isn’t one for the professionals, but for folks like me, who like to take lots of snapshots and only dabble in the more artistic side of photography, it’s absolutely fantastic.

I bought this camera based on wonderful reviews. And in good lighting, I have taken some good pictures. Unfortunately, I have not had the same experience when I have had to use the flash. The recovery time of the camera would range from 10-15 seconds before I could take another picture. That may not sound like a long time, but when you are taking a group shot and want to get another one, it is FOREVER! And trying to get multiple shots of a 3 year old in that situation is impossible. I’ve tried different batteries, normal and rechargeable, but there was no significant change. I was very disappointed and will be returning the product.

I bought this camera when it first come out (for $199) to replace my older 4-year old Canon Powershot that used 4 AA batteries. The older model had a memory limit (for compact flash card) so I wanted trade up to something with more capacity to store videos and more high resolution photos. Since I was already familiar with the Canon buttons and menus, it was a short learning curve. This camera performed much better in low light compared to my father’s Casio (his indoor and night shots turned out very grainy).

Since this model only uses 2 AA batteries, I find I do have to change them more often but I just keep extra rechargeable ones in the camera pouch. I like the lighter weight, the many features, and the available colors (yes, it’s a Girl thing, I admit it!).

A note about recovery speed for taking photos: I found that this has to do more with the brand of the memory card I’m using. I missed a number of opportunities for some interesting shots on trip I may not be able to take again. I thought the batteries were running out of juice. However, swapping the batteries out with fresh ones didn’t make a difference BUT changing out the SD card did! I was using three different brands — don’t get the cheapest ones unless the write speeds are decent.

Canon Powershot A1000IS Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Canon Powershot A1000IS a few days ago and I love it. This little camera has so many cool features.

The lcd is beautiful, everything is clear and looks nice on the lcd. The viewfinder is pretty good it is useful for battery conservation and sunny days but it doesn’t show the entire picture and you can’t see the digital zoom (I could with my old camera).

The 4x zoom is ok my old camera had 10x zoom but it was huge. The digital zoom is 4x so that helps to get in close to the shot.

The camera’s body is simply magnificent, it feels sturdy but isn’t heavy. The colors are nice (I got the grey one). The plastic looks and feels like it is of high quality so I don’t think it will break easily (although I don’t recommend throwing it at the ground). The plastic also feels smooth. There is some metal mixed in there around the lens when it is closed.

The pictures that this camera takes are beautiful. They are some of the best I’ve seen. They aren’t close to a dslr but compared to similar cameras the pictures that it takes are superior. It doesn’t matter if you’re shaking the camera or if the subject is moving around the camera still takes crystal clear pictures. The video quality is amazing I have never seen a point and shoot camera record video as well as this camera does.

The camera is easy to use and turns on almost instantly, it turns of even faster. I also think that allowing you to review pictures by pressing the review but and not turning the camera completely on is a nice touch.

I recommend this camera to everyone who wants a relatively inexpensive high quality camera.

I am going on vacation in two weeks so i will update this review when I get back.

I got back from vacation and the camera preformed beautifully. The pictures that were taken turn out crystal clear without any bur. The video function does not preform well indoors with little light ( you can see the picture but the image noise is bad )

Over all the camera preformed better than I would have expected so I think that this is a great camera for the money.

I love this camera. It takes very sharp pictures and it is easy to use. It is compact enough to take with me wherever I go. It takes excellent pictures in poor lighting conditions. I also like the convenience of using AA batteries as long as I use the rechargeble long-lasting kind then I don’t have to worry about short battery-life issues and having to carry bulky/heavy nickel cadmium type batterris that require a special charger. When I travel abroad I rather just carry a couple of extra AA batteries in my pocket or in my backpack instead of bulkier batteries with a corresponding charger. If I lose my batteries they’re easier and cheaper to replace than the other kinds. I do recommend a simple carrying case to keep it protected because it does look a little bit fragile. Better to be safe and invest in a carrying case.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera takes excellent pictures. I particularly like the Optical Image Stabalization, Motion sensor, and face recognition. I only make 4 X 6 prints. So far no problems. The pet/children mode does a good job of stopping action.

I’ve used the optical viewfinder a couple of times. It doesn’t show 100% of the picture, but it sure makes a difference in extreme sunlight.

Sometimes it is necessary indoors to increase the ISO in order to increase the flash distance (easily done with a button). I still get great pictures. I know some reviewers blow the pictures up and indicate the noise in the picture. It’s just not evident in normal picture prints. I’m sure there would be obvious noise if I was using high ISOs. Battery life is great also. I use Lithium AAs. They last so long there is no need to use recharageable batteries.

The only thing I definately miss is a button to delete “ALL” pictures. There’s a button for individual deleting, but you have to use the menu to detete all. I guess you could look at it as a safety feature, making it hard to accidentially delete all your pictures.

There is a lack of manaul controls, but I never used the manual controls in my prior cameras.

The camera size will fit into a pocket, even though I prefer using a case that fits on my belt. I would highly recommend this camera to others.

Camera was purchased for my wife who reluctently agreed to enter the digital age. Wanted a point and shoot camera that was compact and fairly simple to use but she still wanted occasional creative control. She takes many photos in bright sunlight so a optical viewfinder(not too many point and shoot digitals have them) was a must since many LCD screens are difficult to see in bright light. So far the camera has met or exceeded her expectations. She took a whole series of photos outdoors in bright sunlight and photos taken at the Thanksgiving Dinner table and sent to the local Walgreens for processing were very good. Took a short video with a 4GB HC card just for fun and it actually looks pretty good on playback! All in all so far the camera is performing very well.

I bought this for my daughter when she was expecting her first child. She wanted a good camera before the baby came. She liked my camera, a Canon PowerShot A750, and wanted one like it. Well the price for the 750 had gone way up. I found this one, on Amazon, and emailed her the link. She said it was just what she wanted. She is very happy with the camera. It is easy to use, has just enough settings that she can “get her feet wet” before she buys a more complicated one. She was looking at an SLR but we felt that it would be too much for a beginner. She has taken some good pictures with the camera so far and has it at the hospital now as I write this. (Baby boy, 7lbs. 12 oz. and she says she has gotten some nice pictures of him.) Sorry this isn’t a real technical review but I’m not a real technical person. We both love our Canon cameras and would recommend them to everyone.

Major Lag Time Between Pictures
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
It takes FOREVER for the camera to take another pictuer. I bought this camera in January and am happy with the MPG but the lag time has caused me to miss a lot of great photo opportunities. I really wish I would have spent an extra $100 and purchased a better camera that does not have the lag time this does. Even if it is lower MPG.

I bought this camera hoping that could be so good as my old PowerShot A75. But it is not. Powershot A1000is don’t have the same quality as A75 and the pictures are not so vivid like my old A75.

It’s good for price. Even so, I would not buy this camera again. I would try, maybe, the CAnon SD1200. Or the semi-professional cameras, they are really GREAT!

A few notes…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Read other reviews if you want lots of details on the camera. I’m just going over a few gripes and bonuses that I hadn’t expected.

I received mine five days ago. I’ve had two other Canons and have loved them both (3000+ photos with the A75 before passing it on to my mother, and 4800+ with the A530 before passing it on to boss). This one is starting out to be quite amazing too and I hope to get at least 5000+ photos with it over the next few years.

First gripe is with trying to actually get a purple one. My order via Amazon reseller was cancelled by them. Ended up getting through B.B. for about the same price. Not too big of a deal.

I recommend resigning the included 32MB SD card to a drawer or for your tax records backups. Pick up a couple 4GB class “C6″ microSDHC cards with a SD and USB adapter. The USB adapter is necessary if you want to get to the root folder on the card (for CHDK access) and/or don’t like using included software.

The included batteries are good for experimenting and getting used to the camera. Just be sure to pick up and charge some Energizer or Duracell NiMH rechargables before that trip to Disney.

Customizing the camera–splash screen and sound effects: nope. Even though they included the software to do it, the camera does not support the feature to upload different pics and sound files. A Canon CSR verified this. Sadly, the fancy colored case is as custom as they want you to get. (Actually, it wasn’t a very requested feature and I doubt there will ever be any firmware upgrades to include it.)

“Long Shutter” for tripod night shots: I thought it could do it but it took a while to find. In “P” mode, press FUNC. SET button (takes to EXPosure adjust), press DISPlay button and use left/right navigation to scroll between 1 and 15-second exposure times.

Cases: just about all cases will make this camera look huge. I sewed my own using some scrap fabric, Velcro and webbing for a belt loop. For store bought, just take your camera with you to test fit it.

Recording videos: no optical zooming while recording, so set the zoom to what you need before hitting the button. Digital zoom works if it is enabled, but I generally keep mine turned off.

That’s about it for having it a week. Happy snapping, shutterbugs. :)

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Used the camera for the first time on a recent vacation trip and was very satisfied. Pictures are very good and camera function was good (Mostly used automatic settings). Main reasons for buying this camera were: Brand name I trust ….. High resolution for the price …. 4X optical zoom and still easy to carry in pocket….and most important – View finder is a MUST!

If you are not a professional like me and merely want a good camera, I highly recommend this one.

Nice for the Price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
A quick little review for this camera. I bought this camera sort of on a whim while on vacation. My previous camera, also a Cannon Powershot, had fallen to the ground and would not work. Since the old camera was about 5 years old, I felt it was time for a replacement.

The new camera is packed with features, half of which you will never need. This model is a 10mp which is agreat step up from my 3mp that it replaced. I have only had this for a month now, so I am still getting used to it and all the features.

One thing to note. This being a 10mp camera for the price is what attracted me to it. I wanted something a tad smaller than my original powershot, but this model kept me looking at it. It smaller and lighter, yet still has the fell of a bigger camera.

Only gripe so far is that I have not yet figured out how to take instantaneous photos with it. There is always 1-2 second delay. I am sure I can get around that, just have to find the setting!

Very “Customizable” for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera for my mother and she loves it. Ive been taking some lessons of fotography online, and plan to buy an slr. I was amazed to know a camera thats not even 200$ could have such nice (sort of)”pro” options.

One of these cool options is “focus lock” and “ISO lock”. Since you cant adjust the the camera focus manually like you would in a dslr, you can focus something say 5 feet away and LOCK that focus, so you can recompose the shot at anything of about the same distance, getting some sort of “bokeh”. I published some photos to show the effect. Also the Macro, Normal, and Infinity focus options help with this.

ISO is up to 1600, but you cant really take any decent photo beyond 400. Maybe 800 with a tripod if im very optimistic.

If youre not a photography enthusiast like me, the powershot has a AUTO mode, and EASY mode. The photos taken in these modes are nice too. Besides, there are SCENES modes, for “portraits”, “Night shots”, and others.

After all, 100% recommended.

Good bargain for what you get
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a feature packed, good performing camera for what you get in the price-range. I would say its biggest flaw is that it does not support charging the batteries while they are in the camera; and since you do have to regularly remove the batteries to replace or recharge them, the access to the compartment is awkward.

But, for the quality of the pictures and the ease of changing settings for special conditions, this camera makes up for the battery shortcoming, especially for the price.

Excellent Camera for Basic Photography
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this Cannon A1000 IS about a month ago from Amazon as a replacement to another camcorder/digital camera combo I already own of a different brand. The price on Amazon was good. I received the camera about 6 days after the online order was place. No problems with any shipping part of the transaction and the shipping was free.

After reading many reviews and ratings on this camera I can say it has lived up to it’s high reviews. The camera has a solid & heavy feel to it unlike alot of competitors plastic feeling cameras.

I do a lot of uploading small edited videos to Youtube and the video quality portion of this camera is better than my present combo camera I had been using and the video is done in .mpeg instead of .mov like many other brands. Another reason for the quality is that this camera has glass lens in it unlike many comptetors cameras whose have plastic lens.

As far as still picture quality goes this camera is better than any digital camera I’ve ever owned and I’ve had many different brands since digital cameras have been developed.

It’s simple to use for first time users as well as more experienced users. It has many standard point & shoot features and has a limited manual mode to adjust WB,ISO,Color settings and limited exposure settings.

It has built in red eye removal of the finished picture, great self timer feature and good continuous shooting mode which works great if your not using the flash. Flash recharge (about 5 sec.) is a little slow but I think it’s about normal for this size and price.

I have taken many action pictures in the past month and not a blurry one in the bunch.

In other reviews on this camera I have read are some complaints about battery life. I did wear out the standard alkaline batteries that came with the camera in less than a day but think that was due mostly to setting up and playing all day with my “New Toy”.

I use rechargeable AA batteries and have not had any battery drain problems out of the ordinary since. As with any new digital camera or camcorder it would be wise to use rechargeable.

The camera comes with a very tiny memory supplied SD card which is only good for a few pictures. It is more of a “starter” SD card and should be replaced with either a 2,4,8 or 16GB SD or SDHC card as soon as possible since the camera does not have any internal picture storage capacity.

All in all this is a great first time user or even a somewhat experienced user point & shoot camera and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for good quality at a great price.

Excellent Quality
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R308EVBPTAXTVK I purchased this thing because my mother has a Cannon that is very similar and I loved the quality. I have had two digital cameras prior to this camera in my life. Each time I paid about $150-$200 for the camera. This one was only $130 about, and the quality blows away thet Kodak I had, and the Pentax (the last one I had).

The most obvious difference between this one and others I’ve had is the picture and video quality, especially the video quality. When I play back a video on my computer, it looks and sounds like a professional camera. It looks like you are watching a TV program the quality is so good. I couldn’t believe it. I looked at the file sizes and I knew why. I think my videos are 10 times the amount of space as my other cameras were. I bought a 4GB card to replace my 256MB card. It is worth it though. I save all my videos and pictures on a Seagate external hard drive. Love that thing.

I attached a video that we took the other day with this camera.

A Big Disapointment
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The Canon Powershot A1000IS sounded ideal with its optical viewfinder (very rare in low-end digital cameras), small size, convenient handgrip, well-designed controls, 4x optical zoom, many up-to-date features (10 megapixels, auto face detection, etc.) — and above all, with Canon’s great reputation. (I’ve owned several Canons.) I’m an experienced photobug and, after reviewing the controls, I took my new A1000IS to a child’s bowling alley birthday party. What a disappointment! Due to extreme shutter lag that I haven’t seen since the earliest digitals, I missed shot after shot as the kids raced around me. The exposures and flash performance weren’t great either. I immediately returned the camera. It doesn’t begin to compare with my wonderful (and rave-reviewed) Fuji FinePix F30, which has developed a shutter problem after several years of service. My only difficulty with the F30 was lack of an optical viewfinder, so that in bright sunlight I was literally shooting blind, just pointing in the direction of the subject. I thought I would solve that with the Canon Powershot A1000IS — but no such luck! I’d buy another FinePix F30 if they were still available; however, the newer Fujis haven’t received comparable reviews. Think I’ll try a Nikon Coolpix S560, since my daughter raves about her S550 (a tiny bit wider angle, 34.8mm vs. 35mm equivalent, and more zoom, 5x vs. 4x).

We’ve been very happy with this camera. It takes high quality photos and works well for both travel photos and shots of our two year old grandson who doesn’t stay still. I’m glad to see that this Canon still has a view finder: so helpful for bright sunlight or times when you want to hold the camera extra steady. It’s small enough to take anywhere but still has a slight bulge to help with grip. It works well on the full auto feature but also lets you use more detailed settings. It is easy to adjust exposure for strong backlighting. We’ve been using a SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus 2GB Card for easy camera to computer transfers.

“Best Value” for a Point-And-Shoot Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Unfortunately not many point-and-shoot cameras have optical viewfinders anymore and that’s a shame. This camera DOES have an optical viewfinder and that helps it to stand above the crowd. It also has an LED screen but such screens are nearly impossible to see in bright sunlight. Holding a camera at arm’s length to compose a picture on a screen can introduce shake and cause blurry photos. Therefore, for many, using an optical viewfinder is a much better option.

Since this camera has an optical viewfinder, image stabilization, face recognition and a 10 megapixel sensor an amateur photographer who is using this camera to take superior photographs in good light that can and will yield sharp 8 1/2 X 11 prints. Although I usually use a digital SLR, I must say that I’m impressed with the quality of the images that this camera delivers…especially considering its low price, small size and 7-ounce weight. With rechargeable or lithium AA cells, battery life is excellent and recycle times are short.

The July 2009 issue of Consumer Reports features a cover photo of this camera and ranks it just below a $450 camera in its “compact camera” ratings. On their recommendation and after doing considerable comparison shopping and reading other reviews, I bought this camera for my stepson. However, before I gave it to him, I took many photos under varied conditions to ensure that it would be adequate for his needs. I was so impressed that I’ll probably get one for myself.

The fact that I could favorably compare the photos from this camera with those from my much more expensive digital SLR was remarkable, but there are inevitable limitations. There are no manual settings for exposure or focus. The 4X optical zoom may not give as much range as some photographers need and the effective flash distance is limited. The sensor has excellent dynamic range, but introduces noise in the pictures when they’re taken in low light with ISO settings above 100.

A couple of AA batteries are included with the camera, but you’ll soon need more and better ones. A small 32MB SD card is included but a much bigger SD card or cards will be needed if you want to store more than seven or eight full-resolution photos. Therefore, your initial investment will need to be larger than the base price of the camera for it to perform up to expectations. Nonetheless, when considering the price, small size and very good image quality I believe this camera will meet or exceed the expectations of all but the most demanding amateur photographers.

Feature-packed Digital Camera With Point-and-Shoot Mode
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have read the manual which covers the camera’s features adequately. The camera has “Easy Mode” (point and shoot), “Auto (auto-focus and exposure) mode”, presets for different conditions, and manual mode in menus. 4x optical zoom x 4x digital – optical is usually enough. 2-1/2″ LCD screen on back can be scratched by contact with hard objects. Manual mode menus are two levels deep and require you to know the corresponding symbols. I suspect this may slow some manual users down, especially at first.

I have had a good experience with Auto mode pictures – in general very sharp pictures especially using the zoom to get close shots. This is my first camera.

Why I like the camera for travel because:

1. It uses AA batteries, I use rechargables.

2. The camera has a view finder which is very helpful when you are outside with the sun behind you.

3. Technology is very advanced. Does a great job finding faces and managing focus.

4. Tripod mount.

5. And I think the best price on the market for the technology and megs (10mps).

6. It’s easy moving the photos to the computer.

I have had this camera for about a month. I bought it to replace a Canon Elf that I had for five years, but a plastic piece broke rendering it useless (my fault). I did not want to pay $350 for a camera that served as a back-up to my digital SLR. The price was right on this Powershot; the features far surpass that on my old Elf; and it takes great photos that enlarge to at least 8×10 with no noticeable difference in quality when compared to an 8×10 from my SLR (also a Canon). Photos taken using the digital zoom are noticeably of lower quality, but useful for photos going into the photo album. All in all its a great camera to have as a back-up when the bigger camera is not convenient or not needed, and as a main camera for those who just like to get great shots of vacations and family events. Note that it uses regular batteries and not a battery pack (keep extra batteries on hand; convenient for travel when outlets are not easy to find) and it uses the SD card instead of the CompactFlash used by the larger Canons.

Great Camera at a Great Price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of this camera. My previous camera, which was my first digital camera, was a Polaroid i533. I had it for almost two years and the reason that I decided to purchase a new one was because the lack of viewfinder on the camera caused it to use batteries at an abominably fast rate. So I researched the best camera for indoor and low light settings, and was referred to the Canon Powershot A1000. I have used it to photograph beach outings, sunsets, zoo animals, moving animals (running horses), landscapes, and portraits; both inside and outside, in various light sources. I even used it to take my best friend’s senior pictures. In low light (with high ISO) I notice much less noise than with my previous camera, and the colors are phenomenal especially when the “vivid” color balance is employed. The number of different modes on this camera is delightful – in addition to an automatic mode and one where all settings can be programmed, there are Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Night Schene, Sunset, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium, and ISO 3200. The colors can be changed to Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, or a color scheme of your own creation. The ISO ranges from 80 to 3200, and the white balance works very well. The camera can even be set to take pictures at the full 10 megapixels or a smaller 6 mp, 4 mp, or even 2 mp resolution for email attachments. The automatic settings produce very nice pictures, but even more stunning results can be obtained by adjusting the different functions. A great camera for amateurs as well as those who have more of an idea what they are doing. The image stabilization and face-finder features are nice, although I don’t really notice that IS does much. It is very informative to have a setting in Review that shows the different brightness levels for the picture displayed, as well as all of the various settings that were employed when it was taken. The size of the camera is also very convenient, and it seems to be of sturdy construction. The only complaints I might have are the length of recharge time for the flash and the length of write time for videos to the SD card, but these have more to do with the batteries and SD card than the actual camera. I also wish it had a Panorama setting, which if it does have I haven’t discovered it yet. I have owned the camera for a little over a month and at this point I couldn’t be happier with it.

Quality Pictures, Easy to Use, and Smart
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera and the Transcend 4 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card to ensure I would have lots of quality pictures of my summer vacation to Colorado and that’s exactly what it delivered. The various settings such as Landscape, Nighttime, Indoors, and Portrait make this camera smart and easy to use. I took a picture of my wife and son in front of a waterfall at night. The waterfall had tints of colored lights shining on it. Without the Nighttime setting, you’ll get a picture that you might expect, faces brightly lit by the flash and a hint of a waterfall about 20ft behind the faces. With the Nighttime setting on, the camera softened the intensity of the flash and sensed more light away from the focus point. This produced a beautiful picture with the softness of colors shining on the waterfall.

The camera also has a Wide-angle feature that I loved using for many of the landscape pictures. It produced bold, colorful pictures while the Wide-angle effect gave more emphasis to the elongated Rocky Mountains.

The 4GB memory card allowed me more than 900 pictures at the sharpest picture resolution setting.

This is a smart buy. Get it and enjoy.

Good quality images but needs some skill
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera about 15 days back. I have used it a couple of times indoors, outdoors and indoors with low-light conditions.

Used correctly, this camera does a great job of taking good quality images. I had to play with the camera for about 15-20 mins to get familiar with it so I could take the best pictures possible. My sister owned a Powershot A530 before this one and i had the same experience with that too.

This camera fits nicely in your jeans pocket and is quite light.

You will need a tripod to take good low-light shots. I have a cat and a rabbit and a 3 yr old nephew – The kids and pets setting really works well to take pictures of them. Generally the few manual settings it does have are good enough for a serious amateur photographer.

One gripe I do have is that with regular AA alkaline batteries the flash recycle time can go up to 8 seconds and the camera is blank and unusable during this time. This of course is a problem with most canon Powershots. The solution I have found is to use batteries made specifically for taking pictures (Duracell makes some) or just use rechargeable NiMH batteries. This works great. Almost down to 1 sec between shots with that.

Overall I’d definitely recommend this camera to anyone. But you have to be a little patient and get used to it first – I think this is true for any good camera out there though.

Great for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I mostly shoot with Canon SLRs, but we wanted a compact camera for the times when we don’t want to lug a bulky camera around just to take snapshots. I also wanted a simple camera for our kids to use. We used to use a Canon S50 for that purpose, but it’s getting long in the tooth and I felt it was time to replace it.

My criteria were simple- it needed to use AA batteries and SD memory cards, because I didn’t want to clutter our house with another charger or buy new cards. We have tons of rechargeable AAs in the house, I’d use those with this rather than disposables. And it needed to be inexpensive, but still take good photos. I also wanted optical image stabilization and an optical view finder for bright, sunny days. I didn’t really care about the brand, but Canon has always served me well.

This wasn’t the least expensive camera out there, but it was the least expensive that gave me everything I was looking for.

For what it is, this little camera is fantastic. It doesn’t compare to SLRs in terms of performance or image quality, but I wouldn’t expect it to. It does, deliver nice snapshots. If you know how to pre-focus (a necessary skill with all autofocus cameras), it’s quick enough. The S50 that it replaced was a $500 camera when I bought it six years ago; I think this is faster and more fun to use.

The photo quality is good; I put the camera on “easy” mode and snapped a few shots of my kids. The camera used fill flash appropriately, and did a good job with exposure. There is almost no noise in the ISO 80 photos (you’ll get these in bright light if you let the camera select ISO). ISO 400 has pretty bad noise; it looks like ISO 1600 on the Digital Rebel XT or XS, but it is entirely acceptable for snapshots that will be printed at 4×6.

I didn’t buy this to be a video camera, but it has pretty much replaced a six-year-old Mini-DV camcorder. The video quality is almost as good as that one, and the camera is more convenient, so we’ve found ourselves getting video that we otherwise would have missed by not having the video camera with us. Don’t expect stunning video, but it sure beats the VHS video of me when I was a kid. It’s good enough to record the memories.

The build of the camera seems a little flimsy, especially the battery door; I’m docking the camera a star for that. The battery door is also difficult to open.

The manual controls are pretty limited, but, to be honest, I don’t feel like I need them on a camera like this. You can manually control the ISO and flash; letting the camera pick the shutter speed and aperture based on that is fine for me. If I want full control, I can lug my DSLR around; if I have this, I just want to record the moment.

For the price, this camera is great- it does everything I expected it to do and it does it well. Look elsewhere (and be prepared to spend more money) if you’re concerned about manual controls or advanced features. But if you just want an inexpensive camera to capture memories, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Great little camera…if only it knew how to focus
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
For the most part, this is a great little camera, *especially* for its size — it’s very convenient, good resolution, reasonably fast, and even makes as good a video camera as any sd camcorder could be. Except that half to 3/4 of the time, the pictures are out of focus, often *badly* out of focus. I’ve tried holding the button part down to make sure the little square is green, indicating it thinks the picture will be good, and I turned off face priority. If it even did something as simple as focusing at infinity when it couldn’t get a good lock, it would be useable. I’m looking for a replacement now…

Quality and ease

The Powershot A1000IS has given me great pix! It is very easy to use; even has a setting for easiest use!

It also has the flexibility to do many types of serious shots, with the added feature of image stability. The range of picture quality is helpful, as are special settings for night, sunset, aquarium (which works well when shooting through car windows),beach, and snow, in addition to the “auto” setting. I like the kids/pets setting which captures moving objects. I started getting great shots immediately, and after having a chance to read the entire manual, I am getting even better shots! Comes with a photo program, or you can edit a bit and print directly from the camera.

We’ve been very happy with this camera. We like the size, the features, plus we really like using regular batteries. We’ve been using it as a make-shift video camera as well.

This is the best camera I have ever owned
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera is very user friendly. It has a large assortment of functions that you can learn quickly and utilize to take great shots. Enlargements remain sharp. Easy download from camera to computer or for printing. I like that you use regular batteries rather then having to recharge an internal battery. This allows you to avoid any down time. Only thing I wish worked faster was the flash recyle. Other then that, this camera is very much a 5 star product.
