just to slow
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
THIS CANON POWERSHOT A1100IS IS JUST TO SLOW. IF YOU OR YOUR SUBJECT IS MOVING YOU WILL MISS THE SHOT . I AM NOT HAPPY WITH IT.
Good little camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this before going on a trip and it was easy to use and took great pictures.
Just what I wanted
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought one of these about a month ago and have taken it on two trips and shot maybe 350 pictures with it so far. I’m quite pleased, the pictures are great. The ASA 1600 setting in Program mode allows quite decent shots indoors with no flash, which in museums and many other locations is essential. I bought it mainly because of good experiences with older Powershot models, and because I insist on being able to get batteries anywhere although I use rechargeable NIMH AAs normally. The NIMHs last a really long time. The image stabilization really helped with shots of static subjects with the camera zoomed way in. The viewfinder is extremely helpful outdoors in the sun. Finally, the camera is small enough to easily fit into a pocket.

I am fully satisfied by this camera. It makes very good pictures and videos. batteries goes longer time.
GREAT GIFT
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I gave this camera to my granddaughter – age 11 – for Christmas. She was able to use the camera right away and was taking pictures with great ease. The quality of the photos was good to above average. Functionality was terrific and she was able to use the camera with ease. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a good camera and is not looking for a camera that is for a pro.
pretty in pink
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This little pink camera is easy to use, handy to carry in my purse, and the pictures are good.
Not Happy
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had a Canon Elph and was very happy. I thought this one would be just as good. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. Picture quality is not good. The time between being able to take the next picture is too slow.
Nice camera. Easy to use
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Serves the intended purpose of ease-of-use in a small package. Good photos. Lacks a setting to control the file size of each pic, i.e. resolution.
Excellent Value For Money
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera is perfect, nice pictures, smooth operation great value for money and it is 12.1 MEGAPIX, for that money !! that’s great. It is a little bulky for my taste but well I can carry it at least in a big pocket. I most def recommend this camera for more than an entry level, and actually I received it on time from amazon
Very disappointed
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought a SD1100 a year ago and very happy with it. This A1100 is a big disappointment. Picture quality is poor even at 12MP. When transfer to the computer for a larger view, all the grain shows up even with the flash. Second, it’s TOOOO SLOOOOW, 3-5 seconds between each shot regardless of which resolution chosen: 1M, 2M 3M, etc. These shots were taken with the included 128MB SD card so one can rule out the card incompatibility. Battery life is terrible. After taking only around 20 pictures using the alkaline Panasonic batteries that came with the camera, the low battery indicator started flashing.
out for repair

we initially liked the camera and pictures. Unfortunately, after only 45 days, the camera refused to turn on. It is out for warranty repair and we will see how it works when we get it back.
My third CanonPower Shot
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Because of my past experience, I once again turned to Canon. Nice suprise when found it only used 2 AA batteries (older ones used 4), was lighter- and streamlined to use. Would heartily recommend.
Great Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The camera came in great condition and was just as described by seller. Would definitely recommend in the future!
Great camera, good pirce
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I had a Canon Powershot that I had had for the past 6 years, and much to my dismay, it finally died. It was a great little camera and I was worried about how the newer ones would perform in comparison. After extensive research on CNET and other sites, I finally decided on the A1100IS, and I have not been disappointed at all! It takes great photos, especially on manual mode and it is easy to use and nice and compact. I like that it takes only 2 AA batteries, because it makes it so much lighter and more portable than my old one. In short – a great camera, for the price.
Good camera for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Did lots of research and this is the best camera that I found for the price. Came as good as advertised.
Nice, easy to use camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently decided to upgrade from my Powershot A540 to the A1100IS. What I got was a nice, easy to use camera with many improvements from the earlier model. I find the picture quality to be very good. While other reviews indicate that it performs poorly in low-light conditions, thus far I haven’t had that problem. All of the pictures that I have taken to date have been clear and crisp. There are times when the video viewfinder may appear grainy in low light when attempting to take a picture, however the pictures actually taken are not grainy at all. It is very user friendly, and the motion detection, face recognition, and image stabilization add vast improvements over earlier models. It is small and slim even though it takes AA batteries. If you’re looking for a nice, small, easy to use and very sturdy camera, I would highly reccommend this one.
Terrible picture quality
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I sent this camera back after using it for one day. The picture quality was terrible. The autoexposure washed everything out in nearly every shooting situation. Not only that, no amount of tweaking could give crisp photos- they appeared to be both poorly focused and have a large amount of sensor noise. I’ve seen better photos from disposable film cameras.
I have quite a few Canon products, including dSLR’s and point and shoots, and have generally been happy with their recent product line. This made the A1100 all the more disappointing. After returning it, I got a SD1200 for not much more and have been extremely happy with the picture quality.
Bought for wife and would buy for self.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I measure products in terms of bang for buck. This camera has incredible bang for buck. The cost is low, and the quality is high. The pictures are clear, crisp, and with excellent color and contrast. It is easy to use. It is light weight, but does not feel cheap. The zoom has improved a lot compared to older versions of these cameras. I would recommend this product.
Canon A1100IS – don’t buy it!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Just returned from a trip to France with this camera. I have purchased Canon cameras in the past and all except for a couple of others I purchased a few years ago, they have been of high quality, but I was horrified to see haloing around the light portions of the pictures in the resulting photographs (in the sky around trees for example) and a general lack of sharpness. The quality is terrible! I am an “art” photographer and have used other point and shoots in the past in my “serious work,” but the quality of this one is exceptionally bad. By my experience with the last few Canon cameras that I have bought, Canon has sunk to the lowest quality, at least on their mid-range point and shoot cameras. It also eats batteries. I was not even able to get through a complete day on a standard set of batteries in this camera, mind you with over average shooting. I would not recommend this camera, nor with past purchases Canons in general if this is what they have come to.
Not exactly a good camera
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
1. I expected that 12.1 MP would give a good quality pictures. I have been somewhat disappointed. Too much noise and when it is little dark, the quality is awful.
2. It is pretty big as compared to similar models and not very portable.
3. The memory is has is small, prepare to invest into a bigger memory. There is no place if you want to record a video.
4. The camera arrived quickly so I give them credit for this.
Canon PowerShot
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I really like how this camera looks, and how “sturdy” it is (compared to other cameras). I am really disappointed with how delicate everything is being made these days and this camera just seemed a little more substantial. It is. We do carry it in a case for extra protection. The only thing I see “cheap” about it is the thing that you lift up to put the batteries and/or memory stick in. EVERY time I do this, I am afraid I am going to break the thing. This is very frustrating, as I know if it’s broken then the camera is basically useless. I wish they would have made this part a little better. I can see it is going to be a problem.
I am disappointed that it doesn’t have the rapid picture feature where it will take many pictures in a row for “action shots.” That is the only thing – feature-wise – that I see is lacking. Also, if it is in “easy mode” some of the pics tend to be blurry. I’m not sure why that is. I am playing around with other picture settings to avoid that. Also, I will often take many pictures hoping one of them doesn’t end up blurry. It seems it is mostly when it is in “easy mode” that it has the excessive blurriness.
Wicked Awesome
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The camera is WICKED AWESOME because there is no need to program it. You just point and shoot. Cool colors and easy to use. I received the camera as a gift and could not be happier with its performance.
Battery Issue
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Camera excellent, easy to use, etc.(far exceeded my expectations in fact).
However, when the batteries enclosed were drained, I tried three pairs of freshly charged rechargeable batteries, none of which would work (and which worked in other devices). The lid would not easily close on them. When finally force closed, the batteries did not work. It appears Canon has a slight difference in their battery sizes intended to force you to buy their rechargeables.
Buyers should be aware of this problem since it prevented me from taking pictures I wanted to take (and will not have the opportunity later), even after I have found batteries that work with the camera.
CANNON POWER SHOT VERY PLEASED
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
i WAS RELIEVED WHEN ALL THE NECESSARY EQIPMENT WAS IN THE CANNON POWER SHOT BOX. TO POINT AN SHOOT
Great pics if you have gentle hands!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This camera is extremely easy to use, takes great pictures and fits in very small purses, it’s exactly what I was looking for HOWEVER I personally felt the need to return it due to it’s seemingly fragile structure, I am extremely clutzy and have dropped many a camera, so I didn’t think this one would hold up well with ME!!! It’s great for everyone else!
Wife loves it, so it MUST be nice!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve been a Canon® guy for a long, long time — over 40 years to be exact ( Gad! ). So when I decided to get the Beautiful Wife ( BW ) a new camera for Christmas, it was a Canon®, no argument. She’s a make it easy, no figuring stuff out, point and shoot kind of person who just wants to take some nice photos of family, the office gang, and be able to slip a camera into that travel trunk called a purse for easy access. This little camera fits those requirements pretty darn well. It’s small yet not too small that it feels overly delicate; the viewfinder is a big plus — trust me: composing a shot in the viewfinder will force you to actually take some good photos and not just those arm’s length snapshots; the controls are well-placed and simple to use – the “Auto” setting is fine for most folks until you decide to play around with the other modes ( which you SHOULD – be creative! ); the photo quality, so far, is excellent. 12 megapixels is, in my humble opinion, just fine for almost everyone. Unless you’re shooting stuff for billboard-size enlargements, anything more is just overkill. The face detection setting works fairly well – it locked onto most faces pretty quickly, even in dim light. I only found three small cons so far: 1. Battery consumption is higher than I’d like – the BW drained a fully-charged set of AAs fairly quickly but admittedly there was a LOT of shooting during the Christmas melee. 2. The view screen is set almost flush with the camera’s back and thus is easily scratched. A screen protector is really needed and Canon should include one as they’re fairly cheap. 3. The included 128mb card is way too small unless you plan on shooting only at the lowest resolution which defeats the purpose of having all those pixels. Get a 4GB card – they’re cheap also, and you won’t get caught without card space when that opportunity of a great photo arises. That’s nitpicking, I know, but that’s just my view.
In all, I think Canon® has a winner here – nothing earth shaking, but a good quality camera that’s not hard to use, is compact but not toylike, and takes some sharp and nicely lit photos even on the basic Auto setting.
After the BW ( and myself if she lets me ) uses it for awhile, I may revisit this review for an update but so far I think it’ll do just fine.
Easy to Use camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A very easy to use camera. You will be making excellent photographs in a few minutes. Almost as soon as you insert the batteries. The engineering for this camera is so well done. The balance is very good and it is easy to hold. The settings are also easy to apply. The cd that is included with the camera is an insert into the computer and it does the remainder type of installation. The cables packed with the camera are easy to use also. Within the first hour you will be taking photographs that you always wanted to do. I love it.
Did not even last six months
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I had this camera for less than six months and used it lightly and the on off button stopped functioning. At first it would not shut off then not on. Just not well made. Cannons quality has really went down as this is the 2nd cannon I have bought in the last 3 years and had it stop functioning. The other was used a bit more and we had it a year. However this one was on a shelf most of the 6 months we had it.
Canon Powershot A1100IS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I wanted a small camera that my neice could carry with her easily. I also wanted a camera that used AA batteries so she wouldn’t miss any shots because the battery needed charging. This camera was a bit more bulky than some of the slim cameras but it is still easily carried in her purse or front jeans pocket. And, of course, it uses AA rechargable batteries or AA alkaline batteries. She loves it! I have used Canon digital cameras for several years now and the interface has always been easy to use and is the same with this camera. The image stabilization is a plus for low light situations. It lets her use the 4X zoom even when the light is not ideal. I was concerned the 2.5″ screen would not be big enough given that most of the very slim cameras have 3″ screens but after seeing it in action I think the screen is very usable. Overall, my neice is very happy with this camera and has already commented that when the batteries ran out while on vacation she was able to purchase a couple more AA batteries on the boardwalk and she was back taking more pictures in a matter of minutes. You wouldn’t be able to do that with a camera that had to be recharged!
Perfect gift! Extremely easy to use camera for the skilled as well as unskilled photographer
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is just a great camera. Around 2002-2003 this same camera was about $350. We’ve still got that original camera & it has been terrific, so when we wanted to get a digital camera that could just ‘point & shoot’ by a non-computer savvy person-this fit the bill.
This elderly gentleman was able to take high quality photos and get them onto a computer to email them to me. Now, that’s pretty good. He doesn’t even own a computer!
Mentioned it to a high level engineer friend of mine. To my surprise, I found out his entire family (another engineer , plus a college student) all had this camera & they are very pleased. They also gave this camera as a gift to an 83 yo woman who has found it very easy to use & get the pictures on the computer also.
This is a lightweight, durable, highly versatile camera. What a great buy!
Heartily recommended. (Love the colors!)
hard to use for a rookie
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
It’s a lot of camera for a rookie. The words/pictures on the camera are very small, so study it and practice using it in advance of need-to-use. My ratings are based solely on my novice photographer position, NOT Canon engineering. It’s hard to know whether to shut the camera off in order to save battery life, or keep it on till the timer shuts it off. Store batteries don’t last long, so I’m looking for one of the longer lasting, new technology re-chargeable batteries. The 8GB memory card is a must. Don’t know how to hook it up to the computer yet.
Sanjay,
I’m not sure how to get this to you, but I did read your response re. eneloop batteries and will be buying some. Thank you for your guidance as I am a putz when it comes to this stuff and don’t have ANY money to blow. Again, much appreciated. I got the La Crosse Technology BC-9009 AlphaPower Battery Charger (hope that was smart buy). As time permits, I will continue to learn to use my Canon 1100. Sea Hag
AA’s
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Best batteries yet! I’m tired of loosing the special cable necessary to charge the battery for camera. This is one of the few camera’s I found that uses standard AA batteries. Doesn’t matter if I’m traveling or at a school event, I’m not looking for an outlet to charge or a converter. I can carry extra batteries with me. Change ‘em out and I’m good to go.

Great little camera, excellent photo quality even for those of us who are not usually good with cameras.
Best upgrade to date
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I decided to get this camera based on the video quality of another Canon I have access to at work. When I received my camera (excellent overnight service, by the way; well worth the extra $19.95), I was able to take it out of the box, insert the batteries that came with it, and start shooting immediately.
I have yet to explore its full range of features, but I’m thrilled with what I’ve seen so far. This is my fourth digital camera, my third point-and-shoot, and my first Canon, and I seriously doubt I’ll need to upgrade again for some time to come.
One of my favorite features is that even though it has a view screen on the back, it also has a viewfinder. One of the major drawbacks to most P&S digital cameras these days is the elimination of that feature. When you’re outside in bright sun, it’s so helpful to be able to put the camera up to your eye and actually see what you’re trying to photograph.
The fact that the camera runs on AA batteries is another thing I really like. I already had some rechargeables, so when I ran the juice out of the ones that came with the camera, I just popped in the others and could keep shooting.
If you’re looking for a good digital camera at a wallet-friendly price, this is one to consider.
Poor image quality
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought the pink version of this camera for my daughter who
is going into middle school. While being a good size, and having
the features I wanted, I was shocked at the poor image quality.
I compared pics it took against the family camera, a two-year old
Canon 950is. They both have the same 12.1MP resolution, and most
of the features are the same. However, when it came to image
quality, there was NO comparison. Colors on the 1100is were flat,
and details were grainy and pixellated. This was noticeable in
outdoor shots, but especially with shots taken indoors. I felt
that any shots printed out larger than 4×6 would be horrible.
The 950is is definitely a more expensive camera, but I guess the old
adage “you get what you pay for” is true.
I returned the camera to Amazon for a full refund. My daughter is
getting the 950is, and we’re shopping for a replacement family
camera.
Are you kidding me?

I spent a year with a Canon Powershot A60 and I thought the picture quality was spectacular. We are talking only 2 megapixels here. So I got the A1100 IS with 12.1 megapixels and expected to be BLOWN AWAY. What I got, especially for landscapes, looked like very bad polaroids from the 1970s. Bad colors and unfocused. You Gotta Be Kidding Me. Canon’s email help sent me the steps to reset the camera defaults. I did that but to no avail. Next step: their toll free phone service … after talking with a very helpful service rep he realized I wasn’t a total dilettante and advised me to return the item.
So I brought it back to the location of purchase and invited all the sales reps to see for themselves. They decided it was the camera and not an inept customer. They even pulled another A1100 IS off of their shelf and tried that with the same results. I received a full refund, but was very disappointed because, after all, I wanted a camera!
I believe that a bad lot must have rolled off the Canon production line. What else could explain such low quality? Certainly the prototypes could not have been this pathetic. The more positive customer reviews indicate that some good batches shipped out. (It is a surprise since I had a Canon AE-1 SLR 35mm in the good old days of film and it was awesome.) Caveat Emptor. (In boldface, italics, and underlined. Add a gazillion exclamation points.)
Canon PowerShot A1100IS Digital Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This was a birthday gift for my wife who is not a “photographer,” but just a “snap-shooter.” The ease of use and picture quality are perfect for her, and for me, as well. The IS is very effective. It is much more than she expected, but not as intimidating as she worried it would be. Perfect for someone who wants to produce great, hassle-free images of family, friends, and the world.
Canon Powershot A1100 good buy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had Kodak digital cameras the last few I have had, but after the last one got damp in a bag of at the beach, I needed a new one. I wanted the same kind of memory as I had in the Kodaks and a low price. I also wanted a camera that took regular or rechargeable batteries. Some of the other batteries are just too expensive. I also really wanted an optical view finder in addition to the display screen. Not many cameras provide this any more unless you go high end. I would have gone with Kodak again if they had one with an optical view finder, then I wouldn’t have had to learn new upload software. The main selling point for me was that the Canon had an optical view finder. I have been happy with this camera, it only cost $130 on amazon.com. It is not that different than the kodaks I have had and easy to use. It has alot of features I probably won’t use, I am basically a point and shoot photographer. But, I do find myself using the video which I rarely did with my old camera.
Easy to use and a pleasant suprise
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this camera for a little over a month. I took back the A1000 and got this for the same price. It is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to upgrade my 5 year old Olympus z50 zoom. The Canon a1100 was very easy to use, has a great zoom for an almost compact style camera.
Negatives are few and far between. I would say the speed using flash is a little slow, but not too bad. I have no need for detailed aperture (sp) settings but I hear they are limited.
Positives are numerous and I will only cover a few. I like the ease of use the best. PHD (push here dummy) is what I was looking for. The A1100 has the new 4 digicam processor and I did notice a speed increase from the A1000. The pictures come out perfect every time even though I don’t have the steadiest hand. I have no complaints about using the flash as the pictures come out great. I like the AA batteries as I was always missing pictures before with my old camera. I picked up some rayovac hybrids as I cant find enloope locally. I get 50 to 100 shots and I always preview my pics so I could get a lot more.
Conclusion: I was really looking for another Olympus, but couldn’t stomach the user reviews. The canon has been a real pleasant surprise at a great price. I tried the can A2000,A1000 and A1100. The 2000 wasn’t much different except a little more zoom. I would definitely buy it again!! I am sold on canon (for now).
Great camera

This a great camera for the price. It does everything we need it to do. We especially like the kids and pets feature which has allowed us to take much better pictures of our toddler. It is possible to snap multiple pictures in a short period of time. Picture quality is very good. Definitely worth the money!

great camera, great gift

I was blown away by the features in this pocket camera — it has several that previously were exclusive to DSLRs. I bought it as a gift, and the recipients cannot stop raving about what a terrific camera it is, the clarity of the photos, ease of use, etc. This was a great value.
Good option for the money, small, but low zoom, avr quality
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Owned a A710is previously, this is not an upgrade, its a small brother. Smaller in zise, in flexibility, in luminosity of the lens, in zoom (I can’t help but miss that outstanding 6x when using only this 4x) but smaller in price too.
Start up is excelent, battery life Ok (nice to have AA std batteries), nice small zice.
Nice to have colours to choose from!
Ease of use is fine too. When compared with next level of the line, its obvious that the bridge is too big if you like photography.
I would recomend it to teenagers or kids learning, it’s perfect for that. Also, if you forgot your camera at home, buy it for that weekend and keep it for the kids! But if you’ve gone to a wonderfull place for pictures, or need speed, go for another.

I like the picture quality, which is excellent for this point and shoot class camera. The first test of this camera was taking pictures of flowers (delia) at the Golden Gate Park in San Fancisco, including a sunny day and a cloudy day. For both days, almost all pictures are in focus. Flowers, leaves, and, yes, even honey bees all look so lively, sharp, and excellent color reproduction. I would highly recomment this camera to anyone who is looking for one in the point and shoot class.
Love it so far

I received my new Canon 1100is from an Amazon marketplace seller last week, and so far, I love it. At first, I was frustrated that pictures of my kids came out blurry, but as soon as I switched the camera setting from the “auto” mode to the “kids and pets” mode, my pictures came out fine. I’ve already received tons of compliments on this camera from friends. I’m glad I bought it. I also recommend buying from Amazon marketplace sellers…I got a terrific deal on this camera.

Overall I am pleased with my camera. The zoom is a bit difficult to control. It is easy to over or under zoom. The icons need imigination to figure out because thy are small. The portrait icon should have a simple face and not lines that have to be connected to imagine a face. All the icons should be made simple.
WE are not all teenagers. I am over 80 years old.
Great P&S Camera!

I had to borrow a friends camera for a trip to Palmyra NY, and this was the camera!! I LOVE it!! It had SOO many features.. so i knew it wasn’t junk. I have a habit of reviewing all photos after they are taken. So i knew the photos were turning out GREAT! This camera also has a wonderful censor! This camera was perfect! I didn’t use the flash much, but I got great photos!
I am a professional photographer. Currently I own a Canon EOS 10D and 20D. This camera doesn’t do well inside (Yellowish photos), but does GREAT with allot of lighting, and outside lighting.
I am going to purchase this camera as my ONLY P&S. I only use DSLR’s, but they are bulky, and I want a camera I don’t have to worry about, and can just have it in my purse, or diaper bag!
his is a GREAT P&S camera!

Don’t Bump The Lens!!!!!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Bought the camera new. Appeared to be a nice little camera. While I was at a Birthday Party, the camera was sitting on a table and tipped over on it lens. The camera then displayed a “Lens Error Restart” message. I kept powering it on and off and the lens would move in and out and then redisplay the message. I tried to push in the lens while it was retracting and hoping that it would assist, and then the outer cover pops off….Ughhh! I was shocked! I sent it to the Canon Warranty Factory and they claimed that I had damaged it since the cheap plastic outer cover was off. They wanted to charge me $100 to get it fixed. I refused and had them mail it back. By a more durable camera…like the Kodak C190, or Sony model. I will not be buying another Canon!!
canon camera
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I had a 4 megapixel canon that I loved, but accidentally got it wet and ruined it, so I replaced it with a ten megapixel Nikon, what a joke, the Nikon’s manual was complicated and I never took a picture over 2.6 megapixel with it, in spite of its ten megapixel rating. Problem was also that the camera would turn itself on in my pocket and the rechargeable battery pack that came with it could only last about fifty picture frames. so I decided to try a Canon again, this time the twelve megapixel camera, again, the camera only takes 3-4 megapixels at the most, but at least I can use rechargeable AA batteries that last for 300 pictures or more, and the on off switch is so well recessed I don’t have to worry about it turning itself on without my knowing it. For my money you have to stick with Canon, simple instructions, maybe not performing like I would like, but way better than a Nikon… don’t get Nikons, stick with Canons.
good basic camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I selected this camera to replace my older [and hard used] Canon power shot A530. I needed a camera that used easily obtained batteries–not the rechargable ones used by so many new cameras. I also wanted a view finder for the many situations when the screen was simply not visible. I did not want ‘smile detectors’ or touch screens. This camera seemed to be the only choice. It was a good choice and has met expectations. It is harder to hang onto than the old power shot which was nicely grippable. It seems to take marginally better pictures. All told–I am satisfied with this camera.
GREAT LITTLE CAMERA
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had the Canon A530 and just wanted a larger screen and I thought the pink was just a cute, girly color. I had been very happy with the A530. My mom now inherits my A530. This camera has the same features but is just a less bulky, slimmer camera than the A530. One of the cons is that when taking a picture you have to hold the button down half way down wait for it to focus and then take the picture. So you just cant take quick picture. Being not into picture taking a lot it works for me! Any seasoned camera person probably would not like this camera. But I love it. I have never had issues with Canon. I have Canon office equipment as well and have been very satisfied with their performance. I will be using it a lot on my trips.
garbage
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
this piece of junk only worked sometimes, sometimes we could only get a black screen and the only way to get it to work was to take the battery out and put it back in. and the picture quality was really poor…back it went…don’t buy it, it’s junk
Dead after not even a year
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
We bought this after our last child was born for the built in stabilizer. it worked okay. After less than a year it started sucking the life out of our rechargeable batteries. We bought new batteries, (not cheap), and a new battery charger (not cheap either).Oh, and a new internal battery ($4). Obviously, those weren’t the issue. So, after maybe 500 pictures and less than a year the thing is dead. Very disappointed since I have always bought this brand. Not anymore.
Belated Christmas Present

Bought myself a belated Christmas present. Love it. Its light weight, compact and easy to use. I carry in my purse and no I don’t carry saddlebags or luggage. Just wish I had picked up a case for it too. Next time.
Stopped working after a few days
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Based on reviews here and at several well-known camera sites, I purchased the A1100IS for a family member to take on a big vacation. We tested the camera when we received it, and it worked fine. The family member left the next day for the trip, with the camera packed safely in a carry-on. A few days later the camera stopped working, displaying an= “Lens error; restart camera” message. The Canon support site says that if restarting the camera doesn’t fix the problem (it didn’t), the camera is dead and needs service. Disappointing.
Good for outdoors… I’ts an OK camera not an amazing one
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought the New A 1100 IS because for being stupid I just gave away my A740 which I loved… I needed to have something portable and easy to carry around. So I decided I wanted to try this little one and take it with me to Italy because I didn’t want to walk around with the big SLR.
So I have to say is not bad if the weather conditions help with ntural light. On cloudy days the image quality is not the best, but in sunny days the pictures come out beautifully. The camera can be really slow in low light conditions and even that it has an image stabilization if you move a bit the image comes out blurry. It has no super macro setting like the A 470, but the macro setting is not bad. This camera eats the batteries really fast, it works better with rechargeable batteries, Other wise be ready to change batteries every 30 minutes. The indoors setting works ok. The view finder is good to have but if you use lots of zoom the picture comes out diferently than what you see through the view finder, so be careful with that.. I would say this is an OK camera, not an amazing camera.
In general I was more happy with my A 470 I shoulded not give it away!!!
Canon Powershot Review
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Though the overall quality of this point and shoot camera seems good, there are a couple of issues I have with it.
I have found that the quality of the photos taken with a flash under florescent lights in my garage is lacking a bit.
Trying to open the camera to put batteries and/or a card in it is not easy at all.
The image stablizer is not what I thought it would be either, and some movement is detected in the photos when it is used by those not familiar with the cameras operation, such as kids.
All this being said, if a person wants a good quality and relatively cheap point and shoot camera, they won’t go wrong with the A1100IS.

Great digital camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the best camera I could have chosen. It’s small, easy to use, and has a motion stabilizer, making it even easier to focus the picture properly. I am very pleased with the quality of the printed pictures. I highly recommend this camera.
this is 6 stars by the standards it should be measured on!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
the Canon A1100IS is one of those cameras that invite one of those philosophical, paradigm-shift discussions about the changing nature of photography. but that seems a distraction and for the sake of a review we should talk about the camera itself. just to tell you where i come from – i compare the results i obtain with the A1100 with the 2 other cameras i have come to use the most: a Canon G9 i know isnide out, and a canon s90.
i wanted a very capable, cheap and reasonably compact point and shoot. i have enough cameras that are large, and far more complicated, and cater to my needs as a more ambitioned creative hobby photographer (which means i mainly screw around with aperture settings, demand quick optics and electronics, and use something like Photoshop Elements 8.0 -adjust version a month from now
- for occcasional post-processing, really, if we are honest). nevertheless, let’s get to the point, and make the review stand out a tad by being somewhat controversial with a guess-timate: i would venture that 90% of people buy far more camera capabilities than they’ll ever need or train themselves to exploit; and as far as camera enthusiasts go, they’ll just need the ambitious setting capabilities for 10% of the pictures they take. the digital revolution makes us appreciate convenience, and makes us take *most* pictures either in full or semi-auto mode. really, there is nothing to be ashamed about, we all do it. but enough about philosophy and paradigm shifts, and on to the A1100.
what i have to say is, wow, this camera takes awesome panoramic or group/people/porttrait pictures in full auto mode outside or good indoors lighting, which means traditionally low ISO settings and a distance ~8ft or so. i mean, amazingly sharp. i’ll go further – go challenge your friend with an EOS 5D in such “unchallenging”, good-lighting and typical subect settings. the A1100 produces great pictures by *any* price standard in very standard environments. which is what the vast majority of people will need. and, honestly – if you don’t somewhat thoroughly experiment with your camera regularly, and if you haven’t ready the manual cover to cover at least twice, the fact is you do fall into this category of users.
then there are the more challening environments: typically indoors, and the amount of objects, less light and artificial lighting sources and intensity and wavelengths thereof that challenge cameras. sure, like every other full auto, the Canon A1100 applies the considerable and able capabilities of the high end, latest gen Digic chip to get the job done. and it performs admirably, albeit with the typical temperamental and inconsistent nature of smart digital cameras (but it takes more good pictures in the process than anything i have experienced before, mind you). the thing is, in such settings, do yourself a favor and go for “semi auto mode”. by that i mean the “P” setting along with what the A1100 calls “center based AF frame”, which gives you quick control: a half-click gets the camera to evaluate your main subject in the middle, and then you can go compose and eventually go through with the shot. focus lock is your friend, and make sure to tell the camera to keep the ISO as low as you can (i limit it to 200). do that, and then… darn, does the A1100 take great shots inside too or what? pretty awesome. do *not* challenge your friend with the EOS in more contrast rich, low lighting settings, though.
don’t get me wrong, the full auto mode seems to work pretty well inside too: this is the perfect camera to turn into full auto, hand over to someone else, and tell them to just click away. it will be hard for them to totally screw up pictures, no matter how hard they try (amazing how many people still simply pull all the way through, which may explain some of the picture quality complaints in here). i’ve had a 90 year old take a picture of me with this camera, and it made her day to feel like a pro photographer after she saw the results. but if you own the camera, you owe it to yourself to experiment with the semi and creative modes. and then you will really need a compelling reason to buy more camera. amazing.
the summary is: the A1100 is a very capable camera by any price standard, and a *superb* and *stellar* camera considering its value. i mean, i can take amazing pictures i can blow up to poster size, and yet given its price tag i don’t have to be overly afraid to lose or subject it to some hardship given it’s not asking me to burn a lot of $ to acquire it! the optics are fast enough, the electronics seem extremely capable, the camera is a perfect auto point and shooter and yet allows ambitioned users to beat those results by using semi auto modes smartly (if they bother to learn).
so, as so often, you have to know what and why you are buying it. and be honest with what you really and truly need. there is no way those who really use it well will have complaints about picture quality – it is amazing considering what you pay. if i am to mention complaints, i’d say battery life. in indoor use you’ll be lucky to get ~100 shots with NiMH rechargables, but i have gone an dbought the SONY batteries recommended elsewhere. the battery door takes getting used to. other than that – very nice, simple, and reasonably compact camera considering you can just pop in AAs.
cameras like the A1100 convince me that, a few years from now, photography will not necessarily be about knowing technicalities like apertures or f-stops or the like – it will be about creativity and an eye for the right scene. hate it or love it, the digital revolution will create and egalitarian creative environment and eliminate technicalities.
and we are more than halfway there with a camera like the a1100.
i follow a dual camera strategy these days, and the A1100 is the perfect companion to anything else i own for more ambitioned stuff.
Great pictures for such a low price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The pictures this little camera takes are excellent. Lots of detail and great colors. It is very easy to use. Just point and shoot! Or, study the manual and try some of the special conditions settings for even better pictures.
It is a perfect size for adult size hands. The controls are very intuitive. I was able to shoot 450 pictures in Europe on one set of AA Lithium batteries. The batteries still have life. In total, I have taken around 800 pictures on that set of batteries and they are still going.
Outdoor pictures in daylight conditions are absolutely stunning!
This is a great camera for the price!
Excellent buy – You cannot go wrong with it.

I recently got this camera to gift it to my sister. While I got a chance to play with it I could not stop short of exclaiming Wow’s.
I regularly use my DSLR, but the ease-of-use provided by this camera has got me into thinking of buying one for myself.
Though Canon stopped providing Manual exposure controls Av, Tv, M, … on their lower-end point-and-shoots the pictures still come out pretty good.
There is a Program Exposure feature which can be played with to your liking.
The optical IS is a boon and I have come to appreciate its value since I have wasted quite a lot of photos on my DSLR as I cannot hold the camera still enough while the shutter has been opened.
Hopefully Canon starts making the A590IS series which now sell for more than $200. In the meantime Canon A1100IS is your answer to better photos.

Great camera. (“Out of focus” pix? make sure you peel off that plastic!)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this for the wife. I have an Elph that I love because it fits in a shirt or pants pocket. She likes the A1100IS because it has a big LCD screen and it takes AA batteries. She uses rechargables, but I also like the AAs because if my camera battery dies and hers also die, we can get AAs anywhere in a pinch and have at least one camera going.
My mother also has this camera and she likes the feel of the camera. The same battery compartment that makes this model bigger than the Elph is a plus in her mind because it gives her something solid to wrap her fingers around.
Anyway, other reviews are more in depth, but I have to say one thing about the reviews that say the pictures are out of focus. This is going to sound stupid, but I had the same reaction when we took a few pictures on Christmas morning. I reviewed them on the LCD screen and they were horrible. I thought I got a lemon and was very disappointed. Then I realized there was a nearly invisible plastic protective sheet over the LCD. When I peeled that off, everything was perfect.
That may not be what happened to the others who complained about fuzzy photos, but I just wanted to make this clear (no pun intended) because I almost made a big mistake. So FYI: Unlike similar protective sheets I’ve seen on a hundred different products (I even leave them on my cell phones and such until they peel themselves off), on this camera that sheet is not clear, it makes everything look out of focus and it was hard to detect.

My first camera a Christmas gift to myself! I wanted 2 c what they say they c when they look @ me (I c it; I like it; lol). Read the instructions and you should be able to figure out the rest through trial and error. I am still working out the kinks. I will get back to u when i try to download photo’s to my computer/facebook. It shouldn’t be rocket science or is it? For the price of this camera it apears to be a great buy! So far I have enjoyed my Canon.
Best camera is the one you have when you need it…

I’m an experienced photographer already equipped with DSLRs (EOS 30D, EOS 5D MKII), but these are not always pratical when you are travelling or biking (I do both on a regular basis). I try to take my DSLRs as often as possible with me but but there are occasions when I don’t want to be bothered by the bulky cameras. At the same time, having already invested significantly in DSLR equipment, I wanted to limit my investment. A G10 or G11 would have been nice but for what I wanted to do, it would have been an overshoot. I’m mainly using my A1100is for candid pictures or pictures of places I know I will be coming back with my DSLRs later. Overall, I’m happy about quality of the pictures. I rarely use the full resolution, I typically shoot with medium resolution as I will rarely print large pictures (I have my DSLRs for that).
What I like:
- price
- size
- optical viewfinder (not many point and shoot cameras at this price range still has an optical viewfinder)
- slow shutter speed flash mode
- IS
What I’m missing:
- no aperture priority mode where I can choose a precise f-stop
- wish would have a wider angle
I would definitely recommend this for people on low budget but still wants good quality pictures. It has a lot of features for a camera which sells around $150.
Excellent camera, great price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent camera for the average American who wants an easy to use, easy to carry, reliable camera or camcorder. The picture quality is great except in low-light conditions when you can’t use a flash. The battery life is also excellent. Alkaline AAs will last you for over a month with moderate use, and Lithiums will last you for several months. The camcorder feature is also excellent, creating .avi files that can be easily put on your computer. This is an upgraded model from the A590 IS which I have also used. This camera is even smaller that the A590, making it even easier to carry in your pocket.
Disappointed in this camera
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This is my first digital camera. I also own a Canon Sureshot (35mm) camera that has
always produced good pictures. I wanted a point and shoot without all the fanfare.
When I first got the camera, I went on vacation to Newport, R.I. and took many outdoor pics, all of which came out great. The color was fabulous. I could not have been happier. HOWEVER, I have since taken many indoor pics around the holidays last year that came out far from perfect. They were awful ~ and had a yellow and green cast to all of them. I had the camera in Auto mode which should have been fine and the batteries were new. When I compared the same pics that were taken with a 35mm camera in the same room on the same day, no comparison! The color of all the digital pics is way off. The battery life is not good with this camera either. I know AA’s are not going to last like the other batteries, but this camera really drains them fast. I have since returned it, and am shopping for another digital camera.
Fun and easy to use camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera just before a 19-day trip to the East Coast and gave it quite a workout…nearly 2800 pictures taken during the trip, and only about 5 of them were unclear due to my unsteady hand. The rest were great, even zoomed out to a ridiculously large size on my computer, with crisp lines and faces, and vivid colors, far exceeding any 35 mm or digital camera I have used in the past.
The camera itself and the software included with it are incredibly intuitive. Though there are many manual settings possible, I set the camera in Auto mode and just clicked away. Many places I took pictures required me to turn off the flash, but even those were very clear and bright, and I had to do nothing but aim and shoot.
The delay time between pictures was negligible, and the rechargeable AA batteries I used were good for around 200 pictures a charge, even using flash and with frequent zooming in and out. I used a 16 GB SDHC chip and had the capacity to take 5,000 pictures! I’m still working on filling the first chip!!
The provided software is also very simple to use…as easy as plugging in the provided USB cable, and turning the camera on. All pictures are quickly and automatically saved in folders by date regardless of how many times in a day you download them, and renaming or tagging pictures is a breeze. I have not even begun making full use of the picture touch-up features, but the software includes a fun and easy slideshow application that makes sharing pictures via desktop or projector a snap.
Overall, I could not be happier that I purchased this camera! I look forward to mastering all its features, but as a user-friendly, versatile, and inexpensive point-and-click camera, it blew away all my expectations. It does all that Canon says it does and makes taking pictures fun and easy, right out of the box!
Great little camera for general use
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My first digital camera was an Olympus Camedia with a 10X optical zoom. It was a great camera, but it was nearly impossible to carry around in case I wanted to get a shot of something or other. That’s simply not a problem with the Canon A1100IS. It’ll fit just about anywhere you might carry a wallet. Additionally, the construction is robust enough that I don’t think you have to worry about crushing it unless you sit directly on it.
Ease of use is completely fine. Some of the icons on the various buttons take a little getting used to, but that’s really not a problem. Maybe most important for people like me with very large hands and fingers, the camera is still quite easy to operate. As far as picture quality goes, it’s more than fine. Granted, I use enhancement software, ’cause I like to push color saturation or contrast or whatever, but the images are just fine without fiddling – particularly in terms of sharpness and clarity.
Overall, if you’re looking for an affordable all around camera that you can take with you and leave the camera bag behind, this is an extremely good choice.
Camera ok, service not.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The camera is ok. I have not taken any great WOW inspiring pictures. Have not used it as much as I would like to in order to figure out all the little tricks. Was supposed to be point and shoot, so far not seeing that. It took forever to get the camera. That was biggest disappointment. Will use camera more in coming days to get a true feel of how it works.
Great camera for the money
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
this 12 mp camera is easy for anyone to understand and takes a great picture. It is a little big so not easily put away in a pocket but in small enough for a purse. I like the fact that it uses AA rechargable batteries so your not stuck if the batteries die like on some of the others out there. Overall a good camera for the money. Glad I bought it.
Only one complaint
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have a professional digital camera, but needed something that I could keep in the diaper bag and pull out whenever the children do something cute. Also, I was taking a trip to Boston and did not want to lug the big camera. The pictures are good and I like that it takes short videos too. My one complaint is the battery life. I had to carry around extra batteries with me in Boston and had to change them at least once a day. Of course I was using the camera a good bit. I will be looking for rechargeable batteries and hopefully that will keep battery cost down some.
consumer guide price???? don’t own it – can’t rate it
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m checking the Consumer Guide magazine July 2009 “CR Best Buy” and under the COMPACT on page 28, it’s the Canon Power Shot A590IS; and the price range is $110. The overall score for this camera is a 70. Why is the Amazon price so much higher? Did someone make a mistake?
Great Camera

My third Cannon camera and very pleased. I wanted the AA battery model which makes the camera slightingly larger but worth it to me. No problems with the camera or software.
Low end camera and it shows in the picture quality
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Our Canon 780IS met an unfortunate demise (dropped) and had to be replaced. I didn’t want to spend a lot because I was also thinking about getting an SLR, so I decided to go with a low end Canon point and shoot to cover the gap before I jumped into SLR territory. I got the A1100IS because it was at the “top” of the line of Canon’s low end cameras and I have had very good experience with Canon products.
Build quality seemed OK, but you can tell there is more plastic in this camera than in the Elph models I’ve owned. I liked that the camera has a bulge grip as it is less likely to be dropped. Form factor it is a little bit bigger than the Elph series, but that is to be expected. I’m only giving it two stars because of the picture quality. The camera did not focus well, or quickly for me. Trying to snap pictures of our two small boys was very difficult. The autofocus would lock onto other objects in the frame and the subjects would be blurry. This was not obvious looking at the picture on the LCD screen, but once the picture got into the PC for viewing we were very disappointed about missing some shots. My wife took pictures at the school’s halloween parade, so mind you these are fairly slow moving kids in costumes, and only about half of them turned out to be in focus.
I then took my son outside for an experiment. I asked him to walk slowly at a diagonal into the camera’s view and snapped several pictures using “Easy”, “Automatic” and “Kids & Pets” settings. Nearly all of them came out blurry. The camera simply could not detect him in the picture and instead chose to focus on other, stationary objects. I was actively trying to get that little green ‘focus’ box on him, but it just wouldn’t cooperate.
I sent it back to Amazon (first time I think I’ve used their return policy) and ordered a Canon SD1200IS for just a few extra bucks. After some limited use appears to do a much better job, similiar to my older, deceased Canon.
Also, I just ordered the Canon T1i through Amazon. They’ve got a fantastic price which includes a Canon MFR rebate on an additional telephoto lens that is good through Nov 21st.
great little point and shoot
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
just got back from vacation and am very pleased with my photos. I picked this model specifically for the optical viewfinder in an “under $200″ camera. And I’m so glad I did; there were many times when I wouldn’t have been able to see what I was shooting using the LCD display due to the glare. Also, it uses 2AA batteries which are easy to carry/get extras of…
I would recommend it.
Battery life is terrible
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This camera is very portable, has very good picture quality for a sub compact and is easy to use. But the AA battery life is probably good for 25 pictures only. I find that pretty unacceptable compared to the rechargable battery “card”. I’ll be trading this in soon.

When I first looked at this camera when it came in I noticed the cover over the batteries and SDHC chip looked cheap and was also very hard to open. I had it about 3 weeks when I went to pick it up to use it and I saw where one of the little plastic catches that held it closed was broken off and the cover was opened enough that the batteries would not make contact. This camera is worth about $9.95 at the dollar store. John Bernache Winter Haven, Fl 33881

Purchased Saturday night, returned Sunday morning…

I purchased this camera thinking that I would save a few dollars from the Canon SD780 and others in the $200 price range. I heard that Canon’s generally took great pictures (as I normally have bought Sony’s, but I wanted a SD card camera) and I thought that a 12MB camera for less than $150 without bells and whistles would do the trick. WRONG!!
I took the camera into a dimly lit restaurant immediately after purchasing and decided to take some pictures. I was extremely shocked when I saw how washed out and muted the pictures were on the camera. My girlfriend had her Sony Cybershot (5mb) camera with her and we took similar pictures on Auto mode of both cameras and the older Sony clearly outperformed the Canon A1100. Additionally, the zoom rocker felt very unresponsive/sluggish when picking a zoom position.
Long story short, I took the camera back today (12 hrs later) and purchased a Fuji F72 which has a 10X Optical Zoom and much sturdier/slimmer design for $70 more. The old saying is you get what you pay for. I feel that I got robbed by Canon for performance that would have been better from a disposable and I’m anxious to see the results of the Fuji for getting a slim camera (with excellent reviews on the net and youtube) with more than twice the zoom of cameras in the same price range.
Strongly would recommend staying away from this camera…

Nice but slow
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Overall, I like the camera. The size is nice for carring around in a pocket. My main problem is the speed at which it takes the first picture. When you first turn the camera on, it is like it has to warm up before it is ready to take the first picture, after that, the picture speed improves but isn’t great. If you are trying to capture pictures of kids or pets it is a bit challenging, especially if using a flash.

Broke after 3 months
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera in August and used it to take photos of my son’s wedding. After only 3 months, while taking photos of my grandchildren, I received a lens error message and the camera would not work. I sent it in under warranty (with all of the receipts and paperwork) and I was told that it would cost me $110.00 to repair as they found dust in it. If normal use could cause it to get dust inside and stop working then this is not a camera I would recommend. And if Canon will not back up their warranty after only 3 months then I will not be purchasing another Canon camera. I am very disappointed in this company’s customer service and product.
Five Star Camera…with a fatal flaw for this user
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a great camera but I had to return it because of a “non-standard” USB interface in the camera and an unacceptable work-around suggested by Canon’s tech support. They wasted about an hour of my time before getting to that point!
I’ve used professional Canon film cameras, and this point’n'shoot would have been perfect for my requirements if I could simply have got the pictures off it and into my computer. Considering the price, I have to give the camera 5 stars as a camera, but zero stars as a “removable storage device.”
I have access to 6 computers, but could only connect the camera to one of them, which happens to be the least suitable for any number of reasons. Because the USB interface defines itself as an imaging device, it can only be plugged into machines running Windows XP-SP2 or later. I could do that on one of my machines, which has USB 1.0 and is therefore too slow to be practical. The other machine has a multi-function printer/fax/scanner attached, and apparently the camera is not happy if another imaging device is already installed. After playing around with settings, unplugging the MFC, rebooting, etc, Canon’s tech suggested that I remove the card from the camera and plug it into the card reader. Well, guess what… the card is SDHC and cannot be read by an older SD card reader.
Every other digital camera that I use or have used for the last ten years will plug straight into the USB port and appear on the drive list (so will my cellphones!). Without the device conflict, that’s what happens with the PowerShot, and the “advanced features” available in the software, related to operation of an “imaging device” can be ignored. So in effect the conflict which relates only to the higher level features of the interface, makes the lower level connectivity impossible.
I reluctantly returned the camera, but I have had difficulty in finding anything close outside the Canon brand– major problem being a separate optical viewfinder. Not even the PowerShot’s display is usable in outside daylight conditions. And I have also found more recently that an external card reader can be had for less than $20. I shouldn’t HAVE to do that, but I am seriously thinking of doing it on the grounds that it is no more inconvenient than connecting the USB cable.

Very poor image quality, but nice interface
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this to replace a PowerShot A75. I don’t need lots of special features. All I wanted was a clear, sharp image with good color fidelity — as good as my A75 (which died) would have been fine. Since I bought the A75 more than 5 years ago, I figured that technology would have marched on by now and, even though the A1100 is cheaper, it would be as good as or better than the A75.
I was wrong. The A1100 interface is great — very clean and intuitive — but the pictures are lousy. I mean, really lousy: poor focus, poor color fidelity, simply not acceptable at all. And I’m not a professional photographer (obviously, since I bought this cheap camera), so it’s not that I’m super-picky. I had figured that, with the A1100 getting so many five-star reviews, maybe the less favorable reviews would have been somehow mistaken, or the people got lemons. They weren’t mistaken, and if they got lemons, well, so did I. Yech!
I returned the camera. Unfortunately, I hadn’t checked the return policy of the third-party vendor, so I had to pay a restocking fee. Never again! If returns mean a restocking fee, I won’t buy it in the first place.
The long and short of it: Don’t buy the A1100.
I’ve now bought a PowerShot SX120 IS (I do still like Canon). It’s more $$$, but hopefully better picture quality. After having taken just a few indoor test shots, I can already see that it’s better than the A1100. I hope that will continue to be the case as I test further. I’ll try to post my review by the end of December.
Great camera for the price with lots of features
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Before getting into details, I am very pleased with this camera for many reasons and have recommended it to other people. In general, it is a good, inexpensive small camera that one can carry in a pocket or purse and takes good pictures for a camera of this price range. It has many options and seems to work well in low-light situations if you have a steady hand.
My wife and I have dSLRs, but I organize a motorcycle group and you just can’t use a full sized camera while riding a bike. I have used other small POS (point and shoot) cameras in the past, and this is the best of the lot so far.
The camera takes good pictures. Nothing spectacular, but better than my older POS cameras and not as good as my dSLRs. I wouldn’t use it to shoot a wedding, but I might keep it in my pocket at one so I can catch something that can’t be missed while fumbling with lenses or something else on my ‘real’ camera.
I can also use the camera with gloves on, except for the display button. It’s easy to find in my pocket, turn on, hold, and shoot all with gloves. No .. I don’t adjust the camera while riding, but I can switch it from picture to movie mode by touch (there is a ‘gap’ in the clicks between the two modes). The field of view is wide enough that I can ‘shoot blind’, that is point the camera behind me and take a picture without looking at the display. Yes .. I delete lots of pictures.
Some of the reviews talk about not being able to set ISO. This is incorrect, if you put the camera in program mode and press the function key, you can set the ISO. For most of these types cameras, anything above 200 ISO starts to get very grainy, so I resist the temptation to set the ISO way up in low light situations. I have gotten very good quality pictures at 1/40th of a second exposures, although I had to use the same technique target shooters use .. squeeze the trigger and hold. If you do a quick ‘click and release’ of the shutter, there will be a lot of motion blur. Better to gently press the shutter and hold until the camera takes the picture.
It is also very easy to turn off the display … simply keep pressing the display button until it turns off. I leave the display on as the camera has the ability to draw guide lines at 1/3 intervals on the camera. Where these lines intersect are places to put areas of interest in your photo. Look at many great photos and you will notice that the person or object isn’t in the center, it’s off to one side and maybe high or low.
Anyone who wants to take great pictures will find themselves using software, even the great film artists used the darkroom to achieve the ‘vision’ they wanted. Cropping, dodging, burning, altering the contrast and brightness, are all tools that any photographer should learn when and when not to use. The program that comes with the camera is adequate, but I would recommend anyone that fancies themselves as a photographer to spend another $100 and purchase ‘real’ editing software, such as Adobe’s Photoshop Elements or Corel’s Paint Shop product. These tools allow for more control over the final picture, but don’t cost hundreds of dollars like the Photoshop CS line and do not have a steep learning curve.
The camera is a bit bulky, but I choose it over slimmer models because it uses AA batteries. There is nothing more frustrating than to get somewhere and have your sleek battery pack run out of juice. At least with AA, you can buy more at just about any store or gas station. I would recommend purchasing lithium batteries, regular batteries will get used up quickly. As one reviewer noted, rechargeable batteries are also a great option, although I would make sure I always had a spare, fully charged set with me.
Two negative comments. First, the flash is useless. If you are close enough, things get all blown out. Too far back and things are not bright enough. The ‘acceptable’ distance is very narrow, and the edges get too dark. About the only acceptable way I have gotten pictures with the flash is to use the old ‘Kleenex’ trick — drape one or two layers of tissue paper over the flash to dull the light a little bit and then crop out the dark edges. Secondly, it is very easy to accidentally change the camera settings. I find myself constantly checking to make sure it is still in ‘program’ or ‘movie’ mode. (I tend not to use the scene modes, but adjust the exposure and white balance myself.)
Great Camera for on the go

I have been a fan of Canon for awhile, I have the Rebel XSI, love it. I decided to purchase this camera for a simple reason I do not always want to cart around the BIG camera, and frankly it does not fit in my pocket. The operation of the camera is easy to use. Takes great pictures, and very easy to print directly to a printer or anywhere for that fact. Great Lil camera for on the run. Would recommend to my Mom.
Great camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m just an average picture taker, not too hung up on getting “just the right lighting” or whatever. I just take pictures of our family for my scrapbook. So this camera is perfect for me. It’s small enough to take everywhere, gives me great shots, is easy to use, and it’s fairly inexpensive. Works for me.
Very happy with the product except the speed to take next one.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got this for my wife for Christmas and she is very happy with all the feature except the time it takes another shot. I got this Cannon for her because she has high end Canon digital camera already and happy with Canon. She says time between the shot is not fast to take another shot right away, so I gave the product 4 stars. Thanks.
Too slow
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
It takes great pictures but it uses batteries very fast. The shutter lag and the lag between pictures make it a pain to use with people even if they are standing still. It’s even worse if you want to take a picture of something moving. I would use it only for landscapes. It is frustrating for any other use. Wish I had not bought it.

I needed a second camera take I could carry in my pocket if I wanted. I take alot of family pictures, especially of my grandchildren. Great for this. I also have taken alot of nature pictures with it. The zoom is good, you do lose some quality when zoomed all the way. I have taken over 500 pictures and I am pleased so far. I have taken some great widescreen shots. Overall I am pleased.
best macro shots for under $150

I needed a camera to take extreme close ups on the nail art/designs I do for my portfolio. This camera will show the individual fibers on a cotton shirt.. I think this is the best camera for MY needs. Great colors and you can zoom while taking videos. It is great!!
Great camera for the price

This was the first digital camera I ever purchased and I must say I am extremely satisfied. Simply put its easy to use and takes fantastic pictures. I advise investing in a memory if you are a shutter bug like me!Thumbs up all the way!
Canon PowerShot A1100IS

I have not used the camera only once at Christmas.
It seems to be fine. There is a little getting use

a few years.
Perfect!

Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Green)
This camera was everything I had been looking for and more! Perfect size for handling, self focus and face recognition works great. Zoom and focus works in a snap. Being that my last canon has lasted 8 years and counting with this 12.1 mp I can guarantee I wont be looking for a replacement camera any time soon.
Not at all what I had hoped for.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I received this as an Xmas gift and returned it within a few days. I had asked for a PowerShot because I had two friends who have older models and they seemed to work really well. The A110IS did not. Almost EVERY single picture was blurry. For every 10 photos I took, at least 6 would be blurry to the point that they were useless. I tried all the different modes, I went online and downloaded the manual… but I could not get this camera to perform well. Indoors was the worst but outdoor wasn’t a whole lot better. I have a Canon Rebel that I love and I knew that I could not expect the same quality of photos from this smaller camera but the picture quality was absolutely awful. I have an older Kodak EasyShare that outperformed the Canon. So I returned the Canon A1100IS and bought a Kodak C190 and the picture quality is great. I cannot recommend this camera to anyone. Maybe I got a dud but the only positive thing I can say about it is that the pictures uploaded to my PC faster than any other camera I own. And you do not need to install any software to upload. But when the pictures you are uploading are so bad, it doesn’t really matter how fast they get there….
Easy to use fun camera

I bought this camera so my mom, who is kind of technology challenged, could take pictures without much problem. It works and while it doesn’t have too many bells an whistles, it’s reliable and fun
Got a lemon!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’ve got a lemon here. Have several Canons and have always been happy with both the point and shoots and the DSLRs, but this camera gives me fuzzy, over-exposed photos with a lot of digital noise.
Perhaps there’s a production problem, most people seem very happy with this camera.
TWICE!!! Lens Error => needs service = lousy camera
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
UPDATE. => Had to send the camera to Canon for service over the Christmas holiday (thankfully had another camera for Christmas morning). Received it after service on Jan 2nd. Have used gingerly for 3 weeks and have received Lens Error message again so will require service. COMPLETE PIECE OF JUNK! Buy at your own risk, but I don’t know why you would. < =
I have owned 4 Canon cameras. This is the worst one by far. Purchased it on 11/12 and as of 12/21 there is a ‘lens error’ so we need to get it serviced. We purchased this one as the last Canon we had started to have issues with internal flash pictures. Hopefully we can use it successfully Christmas morning. Thanks a lot Canon for making a lousy camera as we might not have a decent one to take pictures of our kids.
-Picture quality is only average.
-Video quality is below average especially if you are moving. I am not sure if there are image stabilizers in other cameras that are not in this one.
-The focus assistance does not always work properly as it is difficult to align the ‘green box’ guide onto the items requiring focus.
-Our last camera had a swivel screen and this one does not so it is easily scratched.
-Photo speed is extremely slow. Not sure if this is a function of the memory card or not, but our last camera was much faster.
I highly suggest you do not buy this camera. We bought it based on its Consumer Reports’ ratings, but it is a piece of junk.
Canon PowerShot A1100IS
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Good Camera for the money. Pictures OK, a little on the flat side, could be a little more vivid, more contrast. Dose pretty good with kids (fewer blurred shots). Battery life seems a little short (Uses cheap AA Rechargeable though). Fits in your pocket!

Great price. It did not arrive in time for the birthday but I should have changed the shipping rate!
What a great camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Gave this to my wife earlier this year. She is using it constantly and it takes great pictures.
Pro’s: Takes great pictures, even in low light. Super detail.
Con’s: It takes about a second for the focus to settle, If you just mash the button, you get and out of focus picture.
I’d still rate it as an excellent camera since most of the competition also has this usability flaw.
Not sure why it got good ratings-Indoor pic quality is not good
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
All the indoor pictures I have taken so far did not turn out good. The auto white balance is not good, pictures are soft and grainy even with flash.
Currently use Canon A610 and Canon XS SLR, ofcourse I am not comparing to my SLR, but I thought I will get quality to close to my A610 which is 4years old camera. Unfortunately it is nowhere near the quality of A610. Even at low ISO settings it has lot of noise in photos. Autofocus is surprisingly slow for recent camera, and flash re-charge cycle is even slower. I do not see a point in paying premium for Canon brand specifically this camera.
Good decent cannnon camera
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
the camera is very good and picture quality is also amazing. Its very portable and the improvement which I saw in this version of cannon camera is, now it doesn’t takes too long to take each photo like the earlier models of A94. It now takes the pic first and then processes it and saves it. Only problem is eats up batter very fast.
Canon PowerShot A1100IS Very Disappointing
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had high hopes for this compact digital camera after reading the positive reviews…..I should have paid more attention to the bad reviews. On it’s first real test, which was outside on hot day, it practically inhaled batteries. (it takes 2 AA’s and this day I used 6 batteries over a 4 hour period) The zoom control stopped working, but worked later when the camera cooled off….the camera repeatedly shut itself off…..
Now for the picture quality….not bad until you enlarge the image. When the images are upsized to 100%, they take on a grainy, diffused, soft focus effect that is paricularly noticeable on the subject’s edges……no thanks.
In general the camera has a weak, low quality feel and performance to match. I own several digital cameras and thought it would be nice to have a high megapixel (12.1) super compact…..this camera is more like a toy……I sent it back, and will put the $$ toward something that will deliver what it promises.
I just wish these would keep working for more than 1 year
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I have owned two of these – first an A60, and then an A85. Each has given about 1 year of reliable service and then begun to fail. First the shutter stops closing, then the lcd display starts twitching, and then finally the pictures are a smear. The A60 actually started acting up within 6 months, so I sent it in for repairs and got another 6 months out of it. The second ultimately lasted about a year and a half.
I use(d to use) these cameras to take pictures for structural engineering reports – and needed them about twice per week. I have never dropped either one and I have always kept them in a case when not in use – so they have had a fairly easy life.
The powershots really are lovely to use and give great pictures, but I’ve decided not to purchase a third.
Amazing!

After using Sony cams for years and needing a new one, We made the move to this Olympus after reading reviews online. I must say that I was amazed at this gem when it arrived. Started using it right from the box. You can set it to totally automatic or adjust settings to what you desire based on what you are doing. I was finally able to get some amazing shots of our Christmas tree lights that came out soooooooo perfect.
If you are not adept at electronics or photography, it has an “”EASY”" mode that does everything for you….
If you want a no frills cam for a good price…I absolutely encourage it….

A very good product and prompt service from amazon, except for the high delivery charges. The product is working satisfactorily, but battery life is very poor. Battery lasted only for two uses. Should educate the customer on using camera and battery effectively so it may last longer.
Terrible pictures with zoom
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have always had Canon cameras and when I bought this one I expected the quality to be just as good. If I use the zoom on a tripod the pictures are blurry and pixalated. I bought it to take close ups of my jewelry for my business. I used a tripod and a photo box and the quality was still horrible. I also love to take photos of sun rises and sun sets and if I use the zoom the pictures never turn out.
Great little Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We have an older 10 MP of this model and have been very pleased with its performance so I chose this camera for my mother due to ease of use, function and quality. We also prefer a camera with a veiw finder. Seems there are very few digital cameras that still offer a veiw finder unless you get into the prefessional models. Great handy little camera.
poor menu design and no underwater housing
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This camera has the usual poorly designed user interface of Canon point and shoot cameras.
Also, this camera is unusual in that Canon does not make an underwater housing for it. Canon waterproof camera housings are usually excellent but this camera does not offer this accessory.
Image quality is ok but disappointing considering the number pixels.

Love it!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this just before I went to NYC, so I didn’t have a lot of time to figure it out before I left. I had a Canon that I loved, prior to this, but it died a week before I went on my trip. The zoom is terrific, even better than my last camera’s. While in NYC, I carried a small purse with me, and this camera fit very nicely.
This camera does a good job in all lighting, and that was my main area of concern. Once in a while, I will get a blurry picture, but it’s because the setting needs to be changed.
I am soooo happy with this camera! My only wish is that I’d gotten the green one, but it was sold out.
Great Camera with Poor Quality Batteries
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
After less than 30 shots the batteries went dead and Amazon gave me no access to lodge a battery complaint. The only alternative for me was to return the camera which was not defective as were the batteries. I chose to replace the batteries rather than return the camera. I suggest that there be a battery replacement guarantee for the first month.
Not good for pictures in night.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This works good in the day light. but not in the night(yes, with flash), I tried to take some pictures on christmas eve, it was very bad, not even a single picture that i took were good. the image stabilization is bad, all the pictures are blur. I dint shake my hand but still it would not take a clear picture. I bought this b’coz i had a canon 5 MP camera , I liked that. but this one didn’t impress me.
GREAT CAMERA FOR THE PRICE
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Like a few other people I have more expensive cameras and agree that sometimes you want QUICK & EASY and this camera gives you that. This A1100is is definitely an improvement over the camera we replaced(samsung 630). When looking for a replacement the NO.1 feature was a FASTER reaction time to take those pictures (MAKES IT EASIER TO GET THOSE PICTURES OF THE GRANDKIDS ). Its not as fast as a SLR but it cost is 25% of the SLR’s and in my opinion the SPEED TO PRICE is GOOD. I am also impressed with the MOVIE function. I recently bought a HD FLIP camera for my daughter and the A1100is video blows the FLIP away in picture quality and zoom (MAKE SURE YOU GET 4GIG OR 8GIG CARDS IF YOUR GOING TO DO VIDEO)
OVER ALL I REALLY LIKE THIS CAMERA! ESPECIALLY FOR $129.00,HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?,
The only reason I don’t give it 5 STARS is the picture gets grainy fast the higher you go past the 4x zoom.
IN SUMMARY:
LOVE THE CAMERA, MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS USE THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES 2200mh (2450-2500mh is better). I LIKE THE ENERGIZER 15min CHARGER. I THINK THIS WILL SOLVE MOST OF YOUR POWER AND TIMING PROBLEMS.
ENJOY JAK
P.S. This camera does have a continuous mode plus alot of other setting to satisfy an amature photographer, you just have to read the manual.
Good purchase for its price

Delivers more than advertised
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This Canon PowerShot A1100IS is the replacement for the A1000IS, and it continues the great features of the older model. Not only does it bump up the megapixels to 12, but there are several features I like about it:
- it automatically saves “portrait” formatted pictures in portrait mode; no need to rotate the image with software afterwards;
- it’s quick to take pictures — about 1.5 seconds from a cold start to taking the first image;
- takes only 1.5 seconds to stow it too;
- a amber-colored sighting beam to “target” your subject for focusing;
- an adequate zoom mechanism; and
- the choice of viewing the image in the panel on the back, or the viewfinder.
I had a chance to use the A1000IS for most of last week after my Nikon L4 conked out on me. Although the Nikon was a great little camera and traveled the world without problems for a few years, it finally developed a ‘smudge’ inside the lense that couldn’t be removed. So I borrowed my nephew’s A1000IS, and I was amazed. The bullet points above are the distinct differences between the L4 (and the L20, I think) and the Canon. When it comes to SLR’s, I’m a Nikon guy. But this Canon is clearly better than the L4 and well worth the extra $40+ over the L20.
Great Camera in its price catagory
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is great inexpensive camera. It was exactly what I was looking for. Bought this camera to replace and old digital camera who’s LCD display stopped working. Everything worked as expected. It would have been nice if the camera could save RAW files but I guess most “value oriented” point and shoots do not do this anymore.
This camera has a real optical view finder, something I was looking for. With an optical finder, I don’t have to switch to my reading glasses every time I want to use the camera. It is a pain to have to switch back and forth between distance and reading glasses when taking pictures with cameras with no optical finders. Also, you can still compose your shot even when the sun or other bright light source is behind you. Something difficult to do when the camera has no optical finder.
Nice camera to have when you don’t want top drag your SLR with you or you don’t want to worry about your camera but want some snap shots.
Good camera, good price. Nice job Canon.
Very satisfied.

Great camera – great price!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought this for my husband and he seems to like it very much. It’s been over 5 years since we’ve bought a camera and like everything else, so much has changed! This camera seems much more intuitive in its use than our older digital camera. Picture quality seems very good. If I were to give anything a negative – it would be the little “door” where the battery/memory card goes. It’s a little on the flimsy side and rather awkward to use. I think for the price it’s a great deal and Amazon’s quick shipping was appreciated.
Just what I was looking for!!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camara is wonderful and is EXACTLY what I was looking for in a digital camara. The compact size makes it easy to handle and carry around. The large sized LCD makes it easier to see the pictures when viewing. It also records moving objects. To sum it up, this is a perfect compact digital camara with nice features. I love it!!
Mixed Bag of Nuts…….
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera based on the reviews it had. Between amazon and cnet, we thought we were getting a good deal. The price was right but we are returning the camera.
The good:
-Slim and portable.
-Fairly easy to use. Easy program menu to navigate.
-Big view screen and a separate view finder.
-Plenty of zoom capability.
-Capable of taking great pictures.
-The zoom function is available while shooting video.
The bad:
-Really pixelated view screen. It was very difficult to tell whether I had taken a good shot or not by looking at the picture on the camera’s view screen. Half the pictures I had taken of my kids were not good. Had I been able to tell that while looking at the screen, I would have simply taken more shots. It’s a terrible view screen.
-Poor battery life. I put in brand new duracell batteries and got about 25 shots out of them. This is atrocious for a camera this small. My guess is that the flash is a serious power hog and it is a very bright flash. I recommend rechargeable batteries. Don’t bother with regular batteries.
-Huge lag times between pictures. This is never a good thing no matter what you are shooting.
For most of you reading this, this camera will be just fine and you won’t have any problems with how the pictures turn out. I was able to take a few fantastic photos. For those of you who are a little more sensitive to the quality of your pictures, I recommend going up to a higher class of camera or paying a view extra dollars to get higher model Canon.

Average camera, but nice size!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
No fast shutter is kinda bummer and no changeable iso is a real drag, but other than that another fine canon product.
the battery compartment will snap off and break in a year as it is very flimsy and not easy to open. it “slides” open for access to AA battery and sd memory card.
I wanted it for the AA battery usage as where can you not get AA’s if your nicads run low?
Screen is a nice size. easy controls, flash is kinda tricky for fill lighting.
picture sharpness is ok, not as good as my old sony digi cam. I like to have manual controls and this camera does not have that feature, no biggie for a point and shoot, however it’s nice to have control in tricky lighting situations.
Like i said the bigest drawback it the way they made the battery door. it will break! no way around it. it is that poorly made. cheap flimsy spring and a thin plastic door make for that disaster to come.
for 200 bucks it’s a nice camera for the quick point and shoot use that i needed for kids or other non pro to use.
I did not try enclosed software as i use google picasa for that.
for 200 bucks the competition is slim and this is the tops for the price range with a must have AA battery for me.
A great camera

It’s just OK
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The A1100IS I had was just OK. My main concern is the quality of the pictures not all the whizbang features.
The camera is very easy to operate and the size makes it an every day carrier in my pants pocket. The “on” response was good and the shutter lag was acceptable. Lots of shooting modes (which most people will never understand much less use).
My two main complaints:
1. The very soft pictures. My old A560 shoots beautifully sharp images in just about any situation. The 1100 just doesn’t produce the quality shot I’m used to. I have a high end Canon digital SLR and the 560′s shots approach the quality of it’s big brother. The 1100 falls way short of the kind of quality I’m used to.
2. The camera needs to be held at an angle away from my face to be able to review the shots taken. When viewed straight on the images are very blurry and dim.
I’m no technical expert so my review is amateurish and far from complete. As I said earlier my main concern is the quality of the image and the 1100 falls short.
I returned the camera to Amazon for a refund and will try to locate another 560 to buy.
By the way, unless there is a gross difference in price on any item you wish to purchase, Amazon is the place to buy. Their return policy and procedure are unbeatable and fast. They even paid the cost of shipping the camera back to them. I couldn’t be happier with a retailer and have spent a lot of money with Amazon this year for Christmas. Their website is one of the best on the net too.
THANKS AMAZON!

Canon A1100is
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The A1100is is a replacement for my wife’s broken Pentax M20 which was perfect for her. The canon is even better. With so many auto settings and face detection it’s hard to take a bad picture. It’s also a better movie camera. Better exposures and speed. She will probably never use anything but the auto setting but even in that it will find the best automatic settings. The camera was very affordable and uses AA size batteries which is extrememy important as we travel a lot and it isn’t always convienent to find a place to plug in a charger. It runs well on alkyline batteries if needed. The big plus for my wife is that it comes in serveral colors most importantly pink.
Excellent quality photographs, really easy to use.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera takes macro shots and landscapes equally well and has done superb job so far with autofocus and automode light settings, both with indoor and outdoor pictures. It’s an extremely good value, and I’m really happy with it.
Good size, good picture quality – still getting used to controls
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Our trusty old A520 was dropped in the pond, so we purchased this as a successor. After using it for a few weeks, my overall impression is:
Pros:
- uses AA batteries
- image stabilization is great
- size (easily fits in the hand and/or pocket)
- viewing screen
- picture quality
- face detection is cool and useful
Cons:
- face detection does not seem to kick in consistently
- no “manual” controls for aperature or shutter speed
- shutter lag is greater than I had hoped
- flash is strong in the center, weak on the sides of the image
- flash recharge time can be longer than hoped for
All in all, a good camera for the price, but a step down from our trusty old A520.
