I am really surprised you need to ask this question.

If you have been following the conversation re: generic lenses, Canon seems to make it difficult for generic lenses to be fully compliant with the features found on the fine Canon cameras. There have been those here who complain that updating their cameras firmware (something that extends the usable life of a digital SLR) can cause generic lenses to have to go back to their maker for an in lens chip replacement. All this at the owners cost .... this sort of negates any savings realized when the generic lens was first purchased.

You may want to use the rule the pros use. Always buy the OEM lenses made buy the cameras system you chose to buy in the first place.

This is a quote relating to Nikon's but there is no reason to believe Canon's design engineers don't use a similar policy.

"Nikon often includes secret features in cameras and in lenses to make them compatible with the next five years or so of secretly planned technology.

For instance, the 1988 F4 is completely compatible with AF-I and AF-S lenses which didn't appear until 1992 and 1998.

Nikon AI lenses in 1977 already had secret lugs on the back which couple lens information to cameras for Matrix metering, not introduced until the FA of 1983.

Zoom AF lenses, ever since they were introduced in 1986, have always had focal length encoders which insert data into today's digital cameras' EXIF data.

AF lenses of today ... still have mechanical lugs for backwards compatibility with the matrix meter of the 1983 FA, and manual focus lenses still have prongs for coupling to the 1959 (Nikon) F. -- KR

Regarding "marco" lenses. True macro lenses can focus on subjects at 1:1 subject to image ratios. What many generic lens makers call "marco" are actual close focus lenses, but with no way for the photographer to set specific subject to image ratios when shooting under precise, measured conditions.
