nikon lens fx question by Fallen Angel: Nikon FX lens on DX body how well will it work?
I currently own a Nikon D90 and will be upgrading next spring. In the mean time I want to purchase a wide angle and a portrait lens for the Christmas holidays. How well will the FX lenses work on the DX body? I don't want to purchase the DX lens with upgrading so soon..
Any recommendations or favorites for both lenses?
Thanks in advance for answering..

There is a field of view reduction, or crop factor, that must be considered when purchasing a lens which will be used on a DX camera. We don't think of lenses in terms of FX, per se, but rather lenses originally designed for film cameras. Any lens that is not a DX lens, is a lens designed for a full frame, or "FX". I note this because nikon does not designate any lens as FX. DX lenses are lenses specifically designed for DX cameras, where the lens is designed to be smaller and lighter. However, the focal length of the lens does not change, only the size of the image projected by it. A 35mm DX lens is still a 35mm lens, only it can not be used on a full frame, or film camera because it projects a smaller image than one designed for full frame, thus causing a heavy vignette.
So to answer your question, yes a lens made for a film camera will work on a DX camera fine. But the field of view will be reduced. Multiply the focal length of whatever lens you want to use by 1.5 to get the equivalent field of view in mm. A 35mm lens on a DX body will have an equivalent field of view of a 52.5mm lens. This is what lens choice using a DX camera should be based on. Wide lenses will be normal, normal lenses will be short telephoto, and so on. And it depends on what you will be using the camera for. Get a lens like the 24-70mm f/2.8, and it will be useful when you upgrade. It would be a wide/normal to telephoto lens on the D90. I use the 15-85mm DX VR on my D80, it's probably the best DX lens that I've used.
