Personally, I'd go with the 70-200 for the faster f2.8. But that huge 28-300 range is pretty incredible, too. It certainly wouldn't be a bad choice.

In mint condition probably 50% of what you paid for it. However you need to do some research which most people are too lazy to do. Check out eBay and Craig's List. For comparable prices. And go from there. You are asking someone else to do this for you here, and as a result, you may be short changing yourself. As an example I keep all my boxes to my photo equipment in my garage. So I have the instruction books and boxes for all my equipment. I can truly say without straining my conscience that everything is "like new". Therefore I emphasize this in my ad and photo's of my equipment shows the boxes. Now that said, we are in a "throw-away society" sadly to say. And whats new technology today is obsolete tomorrow. The thing in your favor is that you have top notch, very desirable equipment, so price accordingly.
One last point you used the word "good" condition, ask yourself, if this item was on a dealers shelve would it past for new? If yes then the word you want to use is "mint" condition. If it shows small wear=good condition, more than small wear then be truthful with each piece as to condition.

Canon EF 70-200mm question by Ray H: Which Canon EF/EF-S lens should I get for portrait and landscape shots?
Hi All,

Canon 400D digital Rebel is my newest d-SLR. If I may ask the community, which type of lenses should go on 400D get to capture the best portrait images for indoor family photos and outdoor landscape shots?

Lens cost is targeted around $ 1000 USD. I have gone through technical specs and site reviews, but mixed answers are given from site reviews to user comments.

What would you recommend with the following environments to select 2 types of lens?
1. Excellent indoor portraits in,
> Low lighting environment,
> Family party gathering,
> Food presentations.
2. Good outdoor landscape pictures in,
> Summer time conditions in California,
> Minor distortions with face in landscape pictures,
> None moving subject.

I am choosing the two lenses for the following reasons:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM – superb quality and results in all ranges, $ 550

First of all be advised that the XTi has a 1.6x crop factor that make the 50mm looks like a 80mm lens in your camera and this goes to every lenses.

The 50mm f1.4 is an excellent lens that can handle low light condition very well, but it would be difficult for you to work on landscape and group portraits with this lens because of the fixed focal length. Sometimes you can work things out by walking towards/further from the object you want to shoot, but it may not always be possible.

The 70-200 f4 is excellent for portrait and wildlife photography, but again, for group photo it will be a little bit difficult to work with because it's a tele lens. If you have to shoot a large number of people in a relatively small space, you won't be able to shoot everyone in one frame because it's not wide enough.

Both lenses should be good for food photography though - and I'm sure you can use it in any condition.

So... what are the alternatives?

Wide angle lenses are perfect for group and landscape photography. And in this case, the kit lens (the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6) are in the perfect range. But of course you've heard about the quality of the lens, and if you wanted something better there are the EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 IS which goes for about ~$ 500 (depending on merchant), which has perfect range and image stabilization to help you in low light condition. It's a good lens but if you wanted something better there's the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS - which I also use personally. It's razor sharp, it's fast and I can safely vouch for this piece of thing for its quality. The f2.8 ensure you to capture good picture in low light condition (although I would still recommend using flash, preferrably external flash) and the IS will help you even more. The only catch for this lens is the price - it goes for around ~$ 900. But since you're in the budget, I think this could be the perfect lens for you.

Also there's the EF 17-40 f4L lens - which is somewhat in a similar range and somewhat cheaper than the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS, but I would only recommend this lens if you have plan to upgrade your camera to a full frame sensor.

Last but not least... I'm only confident to shoot in low light condition with flash, unless if I'm using a fast prime (fixed focal length/non-zoom) lens, and the built in flash is less than what most people expect so I would strongly recommend get an external flash (the 430EX should suffice, although I would prefer a 580EX II myself). If you decided to get the 17-55 f2.8, you probably will have to wait and save up until you have a budget to buy external flash. But the combination of the 17-55 and an external flash would give you an edge in low light photography.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Well it probably would work but there are different versions of that lens with different quality. Is it the L series lens? If so, the quality is amazing. But, you will want a f 2.8 lens for sports photography. f4 isnt fast enough.

I need a companion to my 18-55 kit lens (XSi) and can get a copy of the Tamron which is in like new shape for $ 100, likewise for the Sigma. The Canon 55-250 costs twice those. I'm an amateur photographer, a variety of shooting needs, some sports, some indoor, wildlife, portraits, etc. Fully aware of the IS advantage of the Canon and the propensity for many 3rd party glass to lack the same- and I'm also on a budget, so the advice "save your money for a 70-200mm f/4 L " doesnt work for me. Unless I hear that the aforementioned Sigma and Tamron are just IQ $ hit and not even worth a hundred apiece, I may have to look at other options. (The Tamron 55-200, esp, I've read decent reviews.) Again, we're talking value class lens here and I realize there are compromises across the focal length at this price point. Thoughts on the two 3rd party lenses?

BL- I GET IT, THE CANON HAS BETTER IQ..... no $ #@^, I realize that, I'm making the comparison on the other two being less than HALF the price...THATS the rub, the price point and value for buck spent...I'm not shooting action shots for SI or Elle, yet nor do I want marginally inferior IQ with a lens I'm not familiar with. Someone tell me with personal experience these two 3rd party lenses are garbage, their opinion, bingo, thats what I'm looking for. NOT that the $ 225 Canon is a better lens. I realize that

Well, I'm a Commercial Photographer myself, and work in a Camera shop.
I can tell you that the Tamron doesn't have stabilisation, and this is reflected in the price. (Tamron lenses with Stabilisation will be labled with VR - vibration reduction.) We sell a lot of them in the camera shop I work at for beginners, but mainly because we don't offer the Sigma alternative and it's a good beginner lens for people just starting out.
The canon obviously does, with the IS in it's name. The build/lens quality will also be way higher, being an official canon product and compatibility between a canon lens and canon camera is going to be superior, and it will also focus faster.
Now, I don't use IS lenses, nor do I rely on AutoFocus. If you need these things is up to you, but remember it's more work and setting up for you to do. Another nice little thing is that the Canon has a USM motor, which means the AF motor will be emiting sounds within the ultrasonic range (and thus will be quiet as a church mouse).
I've had good experiences with Sigma, especially with their 105mm macro lens. Quite legendary, I assure you.
Still, it's the 70-300mm you're talking about here.
I actually own this lens.
To be fair, it's decent.
It sure ain't bad. I paid almost twice that at the time and while I rarely use it, I crack it out whenever I need to do sports photography (which it is brilliant for, I might add) but for wildlife photography (at the end ranges, the 250~300mm zoom ranges) it lacks the image stabilisation I need. Still, I'm shooting without a Tripod most of the time because it broke! Hah.
Anyway, without a doubt I'd categorically say :

You will find that the 70-200 mm f/2.8 is fine for shooting cross court, but from the baseline, you will want to use the 24-70 mm f/2.8

I shoot at 1600 ISO with the white balance matching the lights in the arena. In my case, 3400 Kelvin. Once I get a good meter reading, I shoot in the manual exposure mode for the whole game

As long as you can shoot with the shutter speed at 1/500th or faster, you will be good.

Great lens... you will be AMAZED!!! Be sure to use a tripod or a fast shutter speed since it doesn't have IS, unless you have really steady hands (I've never met anyone with really steady hands before).
