i have brought a macro lens extension tube for nikon and i have 5 rings: one labeled 1, one labeled 2, one labeled 3, one that closes in slightly at one end, and one with a silver ring. i put them on in this order: silver ring on the lens, a numbered ring (i have tried all of them together and only one at a time, then the one that closes slightly at one end on the camera. when i turn my camera on it still says no lens attached. i need help on how to attach it. i have a Nikon d3100

Experimenting with how much the addition of extension tubes affect the degree of zoom. Using a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55 mm kit lens (set to 55 mm). The animation shows how adding more and more extension rings increases the zoom level. Extension tubes are a cheap way to get a high degree of zoom, but their big drawback is that since less light reaches the sensor, you need to use much longer exposure times, which rules out taking pictures like this on free hand. I sent in my Nikons 18-50mm lens cause it was broken, the camera was still under warranty. Anyway, I haven't gotten an e-mail from Nikon yet. How long does it take for them to look at it and fix it. Its been over a week.

That is a great camera you are getting. I am jealous.
For times when you are not using your external flash and are relying on the built in flash (if that ever happens), I have found that if you put a piece of paper towel over the flash it diffuses it enough to make it decent enough to use in a pinch.
