nikon lenses 70-300 os question by .::LJS::.: for all you Equestrian Event Photographers... lens question?
I do mainly Equestrian Show Jumping photography and I am looking for a new lens. I just got a brand new Nikon D3s. I am trying to decide between either the Sigma 120-400 F4.5-5.6 DG APO OS HSM or the Nikkor AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED. Also, will these lenses be ok with a tele-converter? Because when I shoot in stadiums I need a little extra zoom sometimes..... Right now I just have been using a cheap 70-300 Quantaray lens...not very happy with it.

Thanks!
I am also open to other options

Getting a feel for the Nikon D5000 with three tele lenses. Nikkor 55-200 Nikkor 18-55 Nikkor 70-300 Lighting was from a 95 watt house lamp with a yellow lamp shade attached. Tripod was a cheap dynex video tripod. I was too lazy to go and get the manfrotto. So there is wobble in the video and shake. In my opinion the video is decent, I will be using this d5000 as a B camera to my HMC150 for some shoots. Definitely not the best camera for DSLR video but with a decent lens collection I feel it's very possible to create some very extraordinary scenes in the right hands. There is a lot of CMOS "wobble" when moving around too much, a good tripod is highly recommended.

nikon lenses 70-300 os question by Gagan Singh: Lens for Nikon D3100 - VR/OS vs Price Range?
Hello all, first time posting a question here, hope to get some great responses

So I am new to photography, I purchased a Nikon D3100 two months ago with an 18-55 VR kit lens. I am now searching to add two more lenses to my arsenal to help me learn.

For the first one I have already decided the Nikon 50mm f1.8, but for the second I was looking for a zoom lens. Particular Sigma's 70-300 APO

http://www.adorama.com/SG70300AMNKG.html

Now this does NOT have Vibration reduction/ Optical Stabilization. The version of the 70-300 that does is priced at $ 369-$ 399

http://www.adorama.com/SG70300OSNKG.html

Now, as a beginner, that $ 400 mark is beyond me, I am not going to dish out that much, I can't.
Is the VR REALLY worth that mark up? Wouldn't a tripod do the same thing? What situations require VR?

If VR is really important, would I be better off going with Sigma's 50-200 that has VR/OS http://www.adorama.com/SG5020045NKG.html

And also, since I have only listed Sigma, a third party lens manufacturer, is there another brand that may be cheaper and better? Nikon's own lenses do get very pricey....

Thanks!
In response to the_camera_guy, I will hardly use autofocus Really the only time I set up autofocus is when I give the camera to my mom to use xD

So the ability to autofocus or not is not a big deal for me. The only situation is may be useful is when I use my D3100 to shoot skits, sketches, and short films with my friends. I know of that internal noise which is why I have a Zoom H1 external recorder, heh.

nikon lenses 70-300 os best answer:

Answer by the_camera_guy
Out of the three Sigma lenses you listed, only the 50-200mm is able to autofocus with your D3100 because it has a built-in HSM motor (other lenses all rely on the camera's motor to focus, which the D3100 lacks). As you mentioned, the 50-200 also has OS, which pretty much automatically makes it the best choice out of the three lenses.

Another lens you should really consider is Nikon's own 55-200mm VR, available here for $ 220: http://www.adorama.com/NK55200VRU.html

Nikon 70-300 4.5-5.6 vs Sigma 70-200 2.8 Which to buy Part 2

When it comes to purchasing a lens what is the most important thing to look at, the f stop. The large the f stop the more light you are going to let in. The more light you let in the better your image quality tends to be. In Part 2 we dive more into why a 2.8 lens is the right choice for you even if you are just starting out. Stay tuned at the end for a Skype call with Gizzy telling us which lens he decided to go with. FroKnowsPhoto.com Launching June 1 @FroKnowsPhoto.com Please subscribe to my channel.
nikon lenses 2.8 70-200 question by fledermmaus: photography similar lenses to Nikon 70-200 2.8 and Nikon 17-35 2.8 ?
hi i need to know which lenses would do the job for these lenses
Nikon 70-200 2.8 and Nikon 17-35 2.8 ?
since these i can not afford them i want to buy some cheaper lenses
thanx

nikon lenses 2.8 70-200 best answer:

Answer by Shorty
hi on what body will you be using your lenses on?

If you are using a DX camera, the kit lens (18-55mm) will replace the 17-35mm f2.8 quite nicely. The 17-35mm was built for the full-frame camera; on a DX camera, it's ultra-wide angle becomes wasted. Alternatively, if you were going for an ultra-wide angle, consider the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. It offers roughly the same coverage at the wide end as the 17-35 does on full frame.

For the 70-200mm f2.8, you can consider alternatives from Sigma and Tokina. Both make 70-200mm f2.8 lenses at a significantly cheaper price than Nikon.

A video review of my new lens, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR and Nikon's 2x teleconverter. This lens was purchased for my portraiture work but today I took it to a country park to test it out as a setup for wildlife photography to play with the teleconverter. The lens is fantastically sharp and I try to cover all the main points about this lens that make it worth the money it costs. A very good lens for all kinds of work. I hope to show it again in a video of how I use it most and where I think it is best, portraiture. Any questions or comments, fire away!
Canon EF 70-200mm question by Matt H: Canon EF lenses: 70-200mm f/2.8L vs. 70-200mm f/4L IS?
Basically, my question is f/2.8 vs. f/4 IS.
Does one stop make much of a difference? In what types of situations would you use one lens over the other?
I can't decide... they are about the same price, too.

Thanks in advance!

Canon EF 70-200mm best answer:

Answer by Ricardo
The f/2.8L on a tripod is better for indoor sports (but you need a camera with good subject tracking of course). Also it renders better blurred backgrounds due to larger aperture.

The f/4L IS is the sharpest zoom lenses ever made by Canon, very good for hand holding on low light, but a stop lower on shutter speed may make a difference on shooting fast moving subjects.

Both are great lenses.... I would prefer the f/4L IS due to better image quality and optical stabilization.

This medium telephoto macro lens is ideal for both digital SLR cameras and 35mm film SLR cameras. The 70mm focal length gives an equivalent field of view as SIGMA's popular 105mm macro lens when used on digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size image sensor. The design of this lens makes it suitable for taking pictures in all situations from infinity to 1: 1 macro, both with natural light conditions or flash.A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two high refractive index SLD lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce an exceptional level of optical performance. Sigma's super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, and helps create a natural color balance. The floating focus system provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1: 1 Macro. more info

This compact high-performance telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma’s own Optical Stabilizer function. The lens incorporates SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in the front lens groups and is equipped with an inner focusing system to provide high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function effectively eliminates the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the viewfinder as well as in the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography. For Sony and Pentax mounts the built-in OS System allows the photographer to see the stabilized image in the viewfinder and can be used as an alternative with cameras having built-in image stabilization. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 43.3inches (110cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making it suitable for use with circular polarizing filters. more info
